One day after Italian sculptor Lorenzo Quinn witnessed for himself the destruction brought on by mother nature through the force of hurricanes like the ones in the U.S. South and Thailand, he began to create a series of sculptures about it.
Quinn titled his series Force of Nature and the sculptures are brimming over with a sense of raw energy and life as they depict planet earth being hurtled in circles through space by mother nature, as though we are nothing more than a beach ball for her plaything. The statues, fashioned out of stainless steel, aluminum, and bronze are a powerful reminder of the ferocity nature is capable of meant jar us out of any false sense of security we might hold towards nature.
The artist explained that after he had seen Thailand’s ravaged coastline torn apart by hurricanes and the path of devastation they wrought across the Southern United States he had to dedicate his work to the fury of Mother Nature. He says nature’s wrath is able to be awakened at any moment, leaving sudden destruction in its wake. He wants his sculptures which are in installation around the globe to serve as a reminder of that. Quinn also feels they speak to something in our past of a more primitive nature. He recalls the kinds of early statures carved by ancient humans as a homage to their fearsome Gods with the hopes of offering for peace and appeasing their anger lest it be unleashed upon them.
