Are Women Actually Higher Risk Takers Than Men?

Research has shown that men, in general, are higher risk-takers than women.  It’s believed that women’s behavior is taught, not inherited.

To decide if women are more reluctant to risk than men, researchers studied over 500 children from 2 different ethnic groups in Yunnan Province in China.

Children from the Han community are brought up in a traditional patriarchal community while the Mosuo are the only matrilineal ethnic minority group that is raised with opposing normalities from the Han.

In Mosuo, the grandmothers are the head of the household with women making all decisions.  They are on a much higher level or equal to men.  Children are raised in their homes with their mothers, her brothers,  sisters, and their maternal granduncles, while fathers are excluded.

Studies have shown that when children mingle in school, they are exposed to someone else’s culture. At first, each group showed opposing gender norms.  Girls from Mosuo were greater risk-takers than the boys.  The longer Mosuo children mingled with Han students, the more Mosuo girls became reluctant in taking chances.  Over time, they fell behind boys in the same group by the age of 11.

Brave Girls!

Another study was conducted in Yongning Township involving four elementary schools consisting of grade one to grade five with 10 to 30 students in each class and each grade.  Mosuo students made up 40% of the group.  185 students were studied in 2015 and 167 in 2016.

Participants took part in a lottery to test their level of risk-taking.  In general, Han girls were more risk reluctant than the boys but Mosuo girls were less risk reluctant than the boys.  The study further showed that in the first grade, Mosuo girls were quite brave at taking risks over boys, but this changed as they started getting older.  However, this same pattern did not exist in the Han girls because the girls, through all levels of school, were more risk reluctant than Han boys.

The study suggests that becoming more risk reluctant at one given age is not due to their genetics.

The associate professor at the University of Houston’s Department of Economics, Elaine M. Liu, said that many studies will find women are more risk reluctant than men but this study shows that the gender gap in attitudes toward risks among children is influenced by culture and social environments and may not be an inherited trait.

While, in the beginning, children’s risk behaviors usually follow those of their parents, when they enter school, their behaviors seem to reflect that of their fellow classmates.  Therefore, their social environment seems to be an important factor for affecting children’s risk levels.

Exploring risk reluctance could provide valuable information about why men and women opt for different careers, and why women end up with a gender pay gap.

Professor Liu said the study was limited because researchers did not know if behavioral changes were permanent or if children would revert back to their parents’ normal state once they finished school and moved back to their villages.  That said, other studies did not address other behaviors that are associated with gender norms including competitiveness.

Professor Cordelia Fine at the University of Melbourn was not involved in these studies but believed the given studies should be regarded as provisional until replicated including age, grade, and peers.  She further said, the common assumption is the tasks tap into some kind of stable property of risk reluctance in some,  but research finds different tasks are supposed to be eliciting risk preferences which yield different results.

Plastic Waste In Our Oceans is Killing Baby Sea Turtles

Our planet has become a human dumping ground of discarded items and has been going on for some time now.  Our oceans and waterways are major threats to other animal life and it’s getting worse.  One photographer decided to capture the effect of litter that is threatening baby sea turtles in Honduras. The footage is shocking and totally non-acceptable.

A photographer from Honduras, Caroline Power, has been documenting the plight of endangered baby hawksbill sea turtles threatened by plastic pollution.  She is hoping her photographs will have an impact on humans discarding their trash wherever they please and will hopefully save the endangered animals.

Trash accumulation in Roatan might not be as large as the enormous Great Pacific Garbage Patch but is still endangering and killing vulnerable species like the hawksbill sea turtle.

These animals are not able to speak for themselves but Caroline’s photos have clearly shown the plight of these helpless turtles struggling to just stay alive in an environment that is loaded with plastic trash.  These young sea turtles have mistaken plastic garbage as food which will cut their lives in half.  In many cases, while filming, this photographer has freed many sea turtles caught up in plastic rings or empty snack containers.

Not Edible

The bottom line, one piece of plastic ingested by these turtles is fatal.  Really young sea turtles run a very high risk of dying after eating plastic with 50% dying after eating 14 pieces.  It’s shocking that the threats to the survival rate of endangered sea turtles’ are very low because they are unable to regurgitate this plastic.

Sandra Hochscheid, a marine biologist. said there must be a reduction in using plastic and significant changes are needed.  Caroline believes the problem in Roatan is caused by various plastic traveling from the Motagua River and other waterways in Honduras and Guatemala.

People need to understand the impact this lifestyle is having on wildlife and make the choice to use less single-use plastics. In 2018, NowThis News showed Caroline’s exclusive video “Baby Turtles Struggle to Swim Through Plastic Pollution in Honduras”. This video has received well over six million views as of March 2019.

Hopefully, this film and many others will force the human being to wake up and realize the destruction they are causing our planet and the lives of other living creatures.  Plastic items must be discarded in proper receptacles and safely destroyed or re-processed properly.

Technology Meets the Workplace

Technology is, in the near future, going to have a huge impact on the way people work. According to experts, AI bosses and robotic co-workers are going to make the workplace nearly unrecognizable.

Robotics and AI may seem a dream come true but consider the implications of this. Your AI boss will never need to take a break or any days off. In fact, your new AI boss will be fully aware of all the work you have…or have not…completed.  Micromanaging to the extreme, anyone?

Virtual Reality Steps up to the Plate

Virtual Reality has the potential to change and augment all of your daily visual activities. Augmentation Virtual Reality will have a far greater effect on the workplace than full Virtual Reality. Augmentation Virtual Reality will allow you to add data to things already happening around you in the workplace.

Construction workers may be the first to enjoy the benefits of VR. They will use this technology to see specifications and tech data involving the materials they are using on site. They will be able to visualize where to place the materials on the build and every direction involving the building project.

Medicine will most likely be another field to benefit from VR. Surgeons, for instance, would be able to use VR augmentation goggles in many different ways.

Work from Home Tech

Remote work is catching on, expanding every year. Millions are currently contracted by companies all across the globe. Technology means that internet speeds will continue to increase. Work that was never able to be done remotely before will now become possible.

Current tech has allowed for people to share huge files with high-speed cable and high-speed fiber connections, something that a few years ago was considered impossible.

The Institute for the Future’s Future 50 program believes that virtual reality will add to the ability to perform more work remotely. As director Dylan Hendricks explains, “This is becoming much more of a practical infrastructure than people realize. You can interact with people very far away and share data.”

Want more versatility in your remote work life? Holographic conferencing and meetings may mean that workers never need to leave the house.

 AI Bosses will Work 24/7

AI bosses may be more reliable and incapable of playing favorites at work, but they will also be far more aware of your work than their human counterparts. AI bosses are incapable of emotion, and while on one hand, this means you will never be lectured for poor work, it also means that your new AI boss cannot sympathize with you for any extenuating circumstances that affected your work.

Your new AI boss will be keeping continuous tabs on your work quality, the hours that you have worked, and many other factors that some employees can hide if needed.

It’s not an entirely new concept. In Japan, an ad agency known as the McCann Workgroup uses an AI robot as a creative director. While the team had to manually find effective ad strategies in the past, the AI director can “understand” what makes a good marketing strategy.

The AI director gives suggestions to improve ad campaigns and come up with more effective ads.  Per the McCann Workgroup, this AI creative director is an overall winning solution for the team.

Technology is, in the near future, going to have a huge impact on the way people work. According to experts, AI bosses and robotic co-workers are going to make the workplace nearly unrecognizable.

Behind-The-Scenes Photos Which Ruin The Magic

Movies uplifted the nation during the Great Depression and World War II. And they’re not so bad when we want to relax on a Tuesday night, either! While we chill out, unwind, and forget our troubles, we do sometimes wonder how those Hollywood folks actually make it all so real. What’s going on behind the scenes, and off the screens? Let’s see the secrets of the trade!

Stopping For Lunch

Millions of people around the world have found connections and love for the Star Wars characters including Han Solo, Chewbacca, Princess Leia, C3PO, and of course R2-D2.  They all seem so real that it’s not surprising our brains really believe they are real!

Too Much Oil?

Even though we really do know everything is unreal, there is something about seeing an actor sitting in the R2-D2 costume, as you can see in the photograph. Where does reality end and fantasy begin?

See eye-opening behind-the-scenes photos of recent films:

The World’s Most Scary & Amazing Bridges

Some bridges are amazing feats of engineering built with some thought about how it looks, how it blends into nature, or the other way around – how it sticks out and shows off human engineering. However, there are other bridges that are dangling obstacles of potential death, made from whatever was on hand at the time.  If you have some fear of heights or bridges,  you may want to proceed with caution.

We’ve put together a list of the world’s most dangerous and amazing bridges. Let’s begin!

Iya Kazurabashi Bridge – Japan

In Tokushima, Japan amazing bridges made of vines cross the Iya Valley’s Iya-gawa River. The Iya Kazurabashi bridge is exceptionally stomach clenching; made of wooden planks interwoven with vines, this may be one bridge too far for even the most adventurous explorer.

See more bridges that would take your breath away (some literally):

Each State Perfectly Portrayed By One Photograph

Many people, especially those who live outside the US, tend to clump all the states together and view all American citizens as simply “American”.

Which, of course, is wrong to do. The truth is that each state is a mini country in and of itself, with its own unique character and even laws. This list tries to embody the different states using one picture to “rule them all”. And don’t worry, we know each state has its own beauty.

Scroll through and see how these photographs describe their state to a tee. Let’s begin . . .

Alabama

This is one of the most regular sights in Alabama—a young man wearing cut-off overalls and selling the “official” Alabama fishing boat on the side of a street. Looks pretty useful!

Apple Introduces: the New Memoji

Talk about giving its users something new to play with, we are expecting new emojis. According to the reports, users of Apple products will soon have more emojis to make their communication even more fun. We are expecting not 10 but 70 new emojis.

This is to mark the World emoji day which is usually an exciting day in the tech world. We already know Amazon has planned its Prime day. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can start using the new emojis with the latest update. Let me leak a secret; you can expect some exciting hairstyles and options such as red, gray, bald or blonde.

It seems there is always a demand for emojis; we can already guess that the redheads and curly hairstyles will be the most popular choices among the new emojis.

What’s more, we are also expecting some new real looking animals to be added to the emojis. It has been gathered that a parrot, lobster, kangaroo, and a peacock have been selected; other new emojis are the freezing face which will be viral during winter and the fruits such as mangos and lettuce.

Do you love cakes? Let others know what you are craving with the new cupcake and mooncake emojis. The world emoji standard is managed by the Unicode consortium; they are a non-profit company who vet these additions. There is a master list provided by the Unicode consortium and the companies such as Apple can choose which emojis they want to be featured on their devices.

On the master list, there have also been some corrections. The illustrations of some emojis have passed a wrong message and are mostly misunderstood. These errors were pointed out, they include the beer emoji which shows foam on the can, and it was often misplaced by Google and has been corrected in this new rollout.

Also, the hamburger emoji has been redone. In the review, the ingredients formerly seen ‘peeking’ out from the hamburger have been changed. Emojis have made it easier to express feelings and emotions via the internet. Text messages can be understood better when an emoji has been added to convey the intended tone. They make our texts seem more human rather than some content was written by the smart assistants who can also be used to send text and instant messages.

We are delighted to start using some of the expected emojis in our emails. Let’s have a laugh, brighten up someone’s day by sending a fun light-hearted emoji to take some stress of the job.

Help? How to Overcome a Fear of Flying

For years I found the concept of flying hard to get over. One of the first things I ever remember hearing about an aircraft was the name – Concord. While I would have been around 8 or 9 at the time, we didn’t have the money to go on holiday outside of our own country.

So, I never really cared for planes from a young age – when my first interaction with a plane was to hear about it exploding on the news, it left a long-term mark on my mind. First impressions and all that.

Anyway, for years I basically would find any unique way to avoid flying. For a trip, I’d insist that we’d drive from the UK and through other nations to get to where we wished to go. I’m lucky that those I travel with are just as good at enjoying a road trip as I am at suggesting one. However, it did leave me with a fear of flying for a large part of my life – so what can you do if you are like me?

Flying with Confidence

How can you avoid missing out on many important trips and flights in life through an irrational fear?

I recommend that you take a look at British Airways and their ‘Flying with Confidence’ program. For me, it was a life-changer: it really helped me to get over the parts of flying that scared the life out of me. You meet all manner of people in these places. I met people who take on dangerous trips for a living, driving vehicles in horrifying conditions, that simply could not step foot on a plane.

I met people like myself, who were left with a terrifying impression of flying from something they had indirectly experienced in childhood.

Changing your mind

One of the best parts of the process was that all it needed was for me to listen to the words of a professional pilot. Just as my dad used to put me at ease as a child when we’d drive in his old cars due to his skill as a driver, the pilots were quickly able to poo-poo and assuage any fears or worries that I had.

It felt great to have every “But what about…” question and fear batted back at me with a logical, legitimate answer that just made sense. The course even finished with a short flight, where I able to actually confront, combat and then defeat my fear all at once! Just some of the things that put me at ease here included:

  • Being able to learn more about how the aircraft works: learning about the operational details really made a big difference.
  • Speaking to the pilots had a huge impact, too. As I said, hearing it from a professional made a big difference.
  • Getting a better grounding on things like turbulence and other aircraft issues, helping me to see its akin to a car not changing gear as opposed to the engine exploding.
  • Panic and distraction techniques to help me stay comfortable when, as expected, something might go wrong during the flight and leave you worried.
  • Coping with the flight and taking small steps to appreciate where I was going wrong in my train of thought regarding flight.

If you are like me and find overcoming your fear of flying too much, I recommend that you take a trip to the British Airways Flying with Confidence program. It’s quite affordable and could make it much easier for you to start enjoying seeing the world without that constant fear of flying.

Hilarious Pet Owner Revenge Signs

A dog is a man’s best friend. Well, that’s true when the man is in the house. Then the man is out… all hell breaks loose. On one hand, they are dogs, and they do not know ALL the house rules.

To them, if a doll is on the floor (or very close to it), it means that it was left there for them. You can’t expect them to understand that you can’t go around the house dog-proofing it.

Any case, take a look at these revenge notes made by the owners of these very cute and sorry dogs!

Couldn’t Bear The Thought

One of the not-so-great part of having pups is there tendency to chew anything and everything in their path.

This guy’s dog decided an antique stuffed panda looked too delicious to handle and chew the face-off!

For revenge the owner made him wear the panda site! It may not have worked, but it made a cute photo!

Cool Red, White And Blue Treat Ideas for the 4th of July

We always feel all American when it comes to the 4th of July. You can plan a day outdoors or indoors, but you’ll always need those red, white and blue’s to keep you covered.
If you want to dazzle your friends and family, you should try one of these Independence Day treats.

Red White and Blue Dipped Strawberries

Okay—these may technically be a smidge more on the purple side than bright blue, but if you’re artificial food coloring-averse, you’ll love these all-natural (and mostly healthy) treats. The trick to achieving the cool purple-blue hue? Crumbled freeze-dried blueberries. This three-ingredient dessert couldn’t be easier to make.

The Hidden Horror of the Beloved Otter

As one of the most adorable animals in the world, few animals inspire such forced choruses of “Awww!” than the beloved otter. However, behind those cheery little smiles and fluffy faces, there lies a hidden horror… an evil so profound that it’s quite hard to put into words. You see, the otter is among the most vicious little blighters in the animal kingdom.

You see, the giant otters of South America are some of the most fearsome animals around. Despite being part of the same species that gives us the adorable river otter, you can find that the giant otter is one son of a b**** animal.

For one, otters are VERY frisky when it comes to sexual conduct. They tend to be quite commonly seen holding their partner’ head underwater, biting their partner in the face and even KILLING their partner by being so god-damn rowdy. Add in the fact that they have been known to, uh, forcefully mate with other species like baby seals, and it’s easy to see why otters aren’t quite as cute as some would expect…

Capable of being as tall as 5’6”, they provide a very fearsome opponent even for a human. They tend to get palm-sized fists, and hunt in ravenous packs to make sure they can eat all they can. They munch on other vicious animals, too, turning snakes and crabs into dinner. They have teeth that are hard as nails, they don’t mind fighting and have no problem dealing some serious damage when called upon.

Not only is the giant otter a fearsome foe, but they seem to actually enjoy the experience. Few other mammal breeds get a divine pleasure out of killing, but they seem to quite enjoy wiping the floor with just about anything they come across. In 2016, a perfect example was provided: a gang of otters were at “Jungle World”, a popular exhibit that has some otters in alongside some monkeys. When one monkey gets too close to the water, the little otters spring out and pull him under the water, drowning the poor monkey.

It’s horrific, and there are other reports of otters doing the same kind of vicious murder tactics elsewhere, too. They also love to fight humans, too, by making us contract what is known as Valley Disease. It’s capable of causing everything from lesions in the bones to fever and inflammation in the heart and the brain.

It’s made by the southern sea otter, and it can be turned against unfortunate humans if they are not sure what they are dealing with. Few animals in the world are quite as wonderfully adorable to look at but then so viciously capable of doing real damage. Next time you see an otter, keep your distance!

If all the cute photos didn’t convince you, here are some photos of an otter attacking an alligator:

10 Weird Inconsistences That Infuriates Friends Fans

The show might be long finished, and reruns have also gone through many loops, but many will always love Friends. It’s one of those shows, that for certain people, is iconic; like Seinfeld. However, a lot of people are far less appreciative of Friends for various reasons.

via GIPHY

For some, Friends kind of created a social black hole. People who grew up with the show tried their best to imitate the characters’ lifestyles. Alongside that, is the rather excessive use of homophobic language that hasn’t aged quite so well. For all of its weird moments and gags, what most infuriates die-hard fans about Friends is the inconsistency.

No show is perfect, nor should it be expected to be. However, Friends is absolutely laden with nonsense inconsistencies that just slip through the net. Want some examples? Here are just a few examples of things that happen throughout the series with no real explanation.

Moving Around.

For one, each member of the group appears to live in a different apartment without any notice. When they do move out, you get an episode dedicated to it. When did they all move from apartments 4/5 to 19/20, exactly? I must have missed that one. The producers noticed after the first season has already begun, that given how high the apartments are, the flat numbers couldn’t be 4 and 5. So they changed.

Moving Around, 2.

Also, Monica seems to have a changing view from her kitchen window. Sometimes, it’s a city skyline, other times it’s a brick wall and other times it’s another apartment.

Support Beam.

The apartments really annoy me, in case you haven’t noticed. Monica’s apartment literally seems to have a support beam at one point, then it just magically disappears. As far as I’m aware, that’s somewhat dangerous.

Marriage Mixups.

When Monica and Chandler get married, it’s supposed to be a Tuesday, but wind up getting married on a Saturday judging by their voicemail.

Meeting Times.

There’s a host of changes to when certain people met in the show, Chandler and Rachel chief among them. Sure, it’s the pilot episode, but it’s still weird how two main characters’ origin meeting is just kind of all over the place.

Overdue Children.

via GIPHY

Ross’ ex, Carol, somehow manages to be pregnant with his son, Ben, for well over a year. We know some babies hang around longer than expected, but over three months!? Come on.

Phoebe’s Buffet.

Phoebe is one of the most inconsistent characters, which kind of fits as she was the most outrageous of the group. However, Phoebe is one of the most on/off vegetarians you will ever come across. From eating meat lasagne to then making a big fuss about her vegetarianism…it’s kind of weird.

Never Ageing.

Ross somehow manages to avoid turning 30 for about 30 years. In three seasons in a row, he’s 29 – despite there being three different festive periods and thus meaning three different years.

Sports Fans.

Chandler manages to be a sports boffin and someone who is clueless about sports at the same time. From pretending to get football, to avoid cooking to going to sports events…hmm.

Super Clean.

When Rachel and Ross get steaming drunk when they are in Las Vegas, they cover each other’ faces with permanent marker. It won’t come off. Then, they wake up, and it’s gone – like magic! The hotel staff must be VERY helpful.

Do you see what I mean when I say that Friends might be among the most maddeningly inconsistent shows around!? It’s hard to get everything right, but some of these are ludicrous.
