AI Google Doodle Lets Users Make Bach-Music

Google’s innovation and creativity never ceaseto amaze, and one of our favorite features is its goal of honoring different men, women, and key holidays through the Google doodle on their search engine homepage. In honor of German composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday, Google created and released its first artificial intelligence-powered doodle.

Google made the doodle available internationally in over seventy countries and set it to run for a full forty-eight in most of those countries. Users had the freedom to create their own melody and allow the Al built into the doodle to form the melody they created into one that matches Bach’s own style.

But that’s not all the doodle was built to do! Users could also hear their melodies in a rock genre, seeing how it transforms the notes to sound like a Bach melody, and exactly how Google did all this is in a behind-the-scenes video they released later on.

Google’s Magenta, Google’s People + AI Research team, and doodle teams collaborated together to create the Bach doodle. Magenta is a mind-blowing project that uses machine-learning to create music – not just a single melody but harmonies and smooth transitions, as well. Then, Google’s PAIR program does the research to creates technologies that shape the approach to work with AI.

The Google team created a model called Coconet through Magenta which was able to pick out Bach’s individual style through a dataset of over 300 of his own harmonies. As a result, Coconet could match the doodle users created to Bach’s works. “Coconet is trained to restore Bach’s music from fragments: we take a piece from Bach, randomly erase some notes, and ask the model to guess the missing notes from context. The result is a versatile model of counterpoint that accepts arbitrarily incomplete scores as input and works out complete scores,” said the blog post from Magenta.

Which Calendar?

According to the Julian Calendar, Bach was born on March 21, which is now March 31 on the Gregorian calendar used today. Google decided to honor him on the original date of March 21, however, and then had the doodle run for forty-eight hours instead of just twenty-four.

What Google wanted was for users to learn more about the composer himself as they created melodies through the doodle, and what a creative and fun way to remember the famous composer! The doodle is still accessible now in the doodle archive online, so if you didn’t get a chance to use it for yourself, you still can.

Future Meat: Artificial Seafood

Studies have shown there is a rise in consumer interests in alternative choices for protein instead of meat. This interest has given literally hundreds of millions of dollars to companies that are trying to replace beef and/or chicken. Unfortunately, many companies have overlooked and just not focused their attention on developing seafood as an alternative.

Shiok Meats is now stepping up to change that attitude. The company has raised financing from various investors including AIIM Partners Fund, Boom Capital, and Ryan Bethencourt and is now a part of the recent Y Combinator partners for new startups that will be presented next week.

Both Sandhya Sriram and Ka Yi Ling are co-founders and stem cell scientists working at the Singapore’s Agency for Science, technology, and Research who decided to leave their government positions and become a part of the entrepreneurship world.

They have set their goal to create a shrimp substitute that would be very similar to what you find in your freezer section in the grocery store along with a minced shrimp replacement for using in dumplings.

Accord to a 2015 study from the Food and Agriculture Department of the United Nations, Chinese consumers, alone, account for approximately 3.6 million tons of crustaceans. There is a huge market for seafood all across the globe, especially in Asia and Southeast Asia. This is a popular spot for crustaceans which are a large part of Asian diets.

Clean Up A Nasty Business

That said, cultivating shrimp is a pretty nasty business. The industry is constantly criticized for horrible working conditions, unsanitary farms, and endless environment damage. A report from the Associated Press revealed cases of modern-day slavery in the seafood industry in Thai!

According to Sriram, they chose to use shrimp because they are easier to deal with in comparison to crabs and lobsters. The company is planning to expand its choices over time which will include these other crustaceans as well.

For now, their focus is on shrimp and the company’s earlier tests have proven successful. The company estimates they can make a kilogram of shrimp meat for around $5,000. While some believe this sounds expensive, in comparison to lab-grown meat companies it’s a great deal less expensive and these meat companies are still pending to produce their beef replacements.

Ling said they are still relatively low in comparison to other clean meat companies which are still around hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The company is hoping to bring its first product to the market over the next 3 to 5 years and will initially target the Asia-Pacific market. Initially selling in their own market of Singapore and then expanding into Hong Kong, India, and eventually Australia!

Watch (and laugh): Offended Kangaroo Attacks Paraglider

We feel that this guy should consider himself lucky taking into consideration that this situation could have gone much worse due to the possessive nature of the kangaroo. However this time they felt mercy and chose to leave the human be.

Humans have this funny characteristic of associating certain human qualities with animals in the wilderness. One explanation of why we do this is an attempt to make these highly unpredictable wild animals familiar to us.

So the lion becomes heroic and brave, the donkey is stubborn, the wolf is a loner, the fox is tricky and the cat is extremely curious. Sure, they exhibit some of these behaviors and traits, but it is more likely than not their natural survival instinct kicking in, rather than any human-like behavior on their part.

This means that a cat can be stubborn, a wolf can be curious and a fox can be brave, no matter how we stereotype them.

We have long lived with the saying “curiosity killed the cat” but it appears that cats aren’t the only ones who enjoy curious enough to chase red laser dots. In fact watch as these playful fish go right into action!

Their owner is extremely entertained by their antics as they mindlessly follow the fluorescent red dot appearing in their makeshift habitat. They often hit a dead end or the rocks in their pursuit, but that doesn’t stop them from trying to catch it.

Lets take for instance someone coming into your home without your permission? Now that you have that question sorted out we bet this kangaroo feels the same.

Lets hear a couple of words from the paraglider. “I had been Paragliding cross country for two hours near Canberra and had reached a position where I had to land. I was concentrating on the landing and didn’t notice the Kangaroo until after I landed. As it ran towards me I thought it was being friendly so I said ‘What’s Up, Skip?’ It then attacked me twice before hopping away.”

What do you think about this video? Make sure you tell us more in the comments down below. If you like what you see, don’t forget to share it with others who might like it as well. It just might be the highlight of their day! Enjoy!

Israel Joins Space Club

On Thursday, February 21, Space X launched its 70th completed mission, making company history. At 8:45 EST, Florida’s Cape Canaveral Air Force Station successfully sent the Nusantara Satu Mission into the atmosphere, hauling several payloads.

SpaceX is a private space exploration corporation with several spacecraft to its name, including the Nusantara Satu satellite, the Air Force Research Laboratory S5 spacecraft, and the Beresheet lunar spacecraft.

The Indonesian Nusantara Satu satellite has been launched to provide internet access to its citizens.  Israel’s Beresheet is set to make Israel the fourth country to have ever landed on the moon.

Beresheet will take almost two months to reach the moon and will be the first spacecraft from Israel as well as the first privately-owned spacecraft to ever reach the moon.  It will take photos and video for scientific research, explains SpaceX, the owner of the spacecraft.

SpaceX released high-resolution pictures of the launch immediately after it happened.  The test launch had occurred on Monday for Thursday’s planned launch, and a back-up plan of a Friday launch was scheduled in case of complications.

Reusable Rocket

SpaceX is well known for using reusable rockets; in fact, this payload was launched on a Falcon 9 rocket while the first stage rocket had been used to launch Iridium 7 in July of 2018 and SAOCOM 1A in October of 2018. SpaceX successfully recovered first stage booster again after the launch on Thursday night.  The mission makes the 70th one for SpaceX, and the 20th successful launch reusing a booster.

Nusantara Satu was successfully launched to a geosynchronous transfer orbit and was expected to work soon after. SpaceX, still riding high from its successes, is scheduled for another launch in March in its partnership with NASA.  The unmanned test launch will demonstrate the possibility of sending astronauts into space in the future.

Are These Grass Shoes Set To Change The Industry?

When Nike tend to release a new pair of shoes, they tend to make a big splash in the market. As one of the market leaders and one of the most innovative companies around, they tend to know how to add something new to the market. Their latest product release, though, might be a step too far in the radical direction for some: a pair of shoes covered in grass.

These new golf shoes, made from grass, were recently set out as one of their biggest moves in the 2019 market. While it looks rather odd to begin with, it’s definitely something a little different to the norm. It is, though, definitely an interesting concept: and one that we’re sure plenty of golf fans will probably love putting on their feet.

The price of $149, though, will immediately put quite a lot of people off making the investment in the first place. They are supposed to blend in with whatever grass you happen to be playing on, which is quite an interesting take. Usually, we wear shoes to make sure we don’t blend into the ground too much!

A New Take On Turf

As you might imagine, too, the shoes brought more than their fair share of comical complaints and positive responses. As one user so eloquently put it: “Why would I want to play a gold shoe that makes you look like you are playing out of the rough!”

However, Nike are one of the largest manufacturers around, and have a bit of a habit of being trend-setters. We can probably see these selling pretty well, even if they would definitely not appeal to the average punter. Known for their innovation and desire to break trends, a pair of grass-made shoes might just do that!

Outside of their rather creative look, these shoes are also supposed to be designed to provide high quality comfort when playing golf. They might look a little on the wild side, but it’s fair to say that these must have a market for them – why else would Nike make them unless they’d see that there was an interest in such a release?

How Cold Is It? Watch Water Instantly Freezing

This remarkable video clip of the water contained in a plastic bottle instantly turning into ice when placed outside in the cold weather demands to be seen. And as this chilling clip runs all of nine seconds, we’re going to call this instantaneously icy all-natural clip The Deep Freeze.

The footage herein was recorded and released by 23-year-old Daniel Dück of Germany, while he was taking a break from his work in a supermarket in Euskirchen, a town in Germany’s surprisingly chilly region of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Freeze In 7 Seconds

As can be seen in the clip, young Dück firmly slams a filled water bottle onto a slab of snowy concrete, stirring up and water and setting off a chain reaction wherein the water is transformed into ice in less than seven seconds.

The alteration of the water from liquid to solid form begins at the top of the bottle and quickly works its way down to the bottom and resembling a fog moving vertically across a rainy sky. The yield is a silvery, solid mass of bottled ice! Can somebody say “Ice, Ice, Baby”???

The image of the lightning-fast freezing effect immediately calls to mind hyper-real scenes of elemental altering one sees in comic books and superhero movies. But upon a few chilling glimpses of the clip, one comes away surmising that the powers of Iceman Bobby Drake of the X-Men and Jack Frost, both of Marvel Comics, as well as Lucius Best aka Frozone of Disney’s The Incredibles franchise, pale in comparison to Mother Nature’s omnipotence when it comes to all things concerning weather and climate change.

We can’t even imagine so effective an image of water and ice coming from the pen of Robert Frost, whose moniker and atmospheric, nature-filled writings speak for themselves.

As the chill of winter makes its way across the United States, NOW is the time to dip into the icy depths of this elemental video clip, which can only inspire those in an appropriate climate to commence their own experiments in this positively primal, atmospheric forum.

If the climate is right, here’s what you should be doing: take a bottle, fill it with water, head outside, slam that baby onto the ground and then enjoy what you’re seeing. Oh, and keep warm while you’re doing it—and definitely make sure there’s a mug full of steaming hot cocoa (or maybe something a little stronger) waiting for you indoors—so it’s not your liquids that freeze over!

Read This: Recycling 101

I want to applaud you if you are one of the very special people who place your empty plastic containers in a recycling bin because you have just become an important part of the recycling process. This bottle will become something new and will continue to over and over again!

Sadly, approximately 70% of people will toss recyclable items in the trash bin. Very few people place recyclable items in their proper recycling bins as they should.  If you don’t recycle, it’s time to understand the process and what becomes of these plastic bottles.

Items that are placed in recyclable bins are picked up, sorted, and then ground into plastic flakes.  The flakes are then sorted by types and separated before being washed and dried.  These flakes are used to make so many things including clothing, carpet, cups, trays, fibers, bottles, and so many other items.

Not only are recycled items good for the environment but saves on energy as well.  One of the most overabundant items found in the trash is water bottles that thousands of people consume every day.

Recycling Saves Energy

According to the International Bottled Water Association, turning these old bottles into new ones will use 84% less energy. If everyone understood what an important role they play when they recycle items, they might look at the process in a new light.

The IBWA has launched a program “Put It In The Bin” which is a partner-friendly initiative focusing on educating people about how valuable it is to put recyclables in their proper bins so they can be made into something new and wonderful!

We all have busy lives and recycling isn’t always convenient or we just forget to recycle but it really is very important.  Take a look at these very easy steps that will help you make recycling a part of your life, every day.

The Bin Location:

It will be so much easier to recycle if you place the bin next to your trash can.  It will be a reminder that throwing your plastic bottle in the recycle bin is just as easy as throwing it in the trash.

The Caps:

Once you have finished your bottled beverage or water, put the cap back on the bottle and recycle.  Both the bottle and the cap are made from plastics that are in high-demand by recycling facilities.

Bring Items Hone:

If you’re away from home and can’t locate a bin, bring them home and place them in the recyclable bin next to your trash.  Have a bag available in your car to empty used bottles in and then bring them home to your recyclable bin.

More than 90% of Americans have access to a curbside bin or a drop-off center.  Set an alarm on your phone so you will remember to bring the recycling bin out to the curb on the day they pick up.

Buy Recyclables:

Buy items made from recycled materials to support the ongoing effort to recycle these items later on.

While there are many things that can be recycled, bottled water is the most common at a rate of 53.9%.  One plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to power a 60-watt bulb for 6 hours.

According to Recycle Across America, 5 recycled plastic bottles provide enough fiber to produce one square foot of carpet!   The possibilities are endless and all it takes is one small choice to recycle!

I want to applaud you if you are one of the very special people who place your empty plastic containers in a recycling bin because you have just become an important part of the recycling process. This bottle will become something new and will continue to over...

DNA Technology Brings Family Together After 52 Years

For those who grow up without full knowledge of who their parents are, the wait can be anguishing. You will often find many kernels of truth and half-truth along the way. This does make it hard to work out how close you are to finding out the truth: and it also makes it increasingly easy to find out you have been wrong.

The search can go on for years – sometimes decades. For Karen Leslie, though, the reunion with her daughter would take a whopping 52 years!

Karen was just 21 at the time when she met her husband, Dick when they fell pregnant with their daughter in 1967. Kicked out of her home for getting pregnant in this manner, she was unable to have the child due to affordability and thus made the gut-wrenching decision to have the child and then give her away to an adoption agency.

The hope was that she would one day see her again: and now, she can say that she has.

KGTV, a news outlet based in San Diego, ran a report on the meeting recently. They found that the Ancestry DNA program had connected Dicks’ daughters from a previous marriage to a woman who went by the name of Erin Chatterton. Chatterton was identified as a ‘sibling’ thanks to the service, so the investigation got underway.

When Dick reached out to his daughters, Lisa and Lori, he asked Lisa if she knew who this could be – no information was forthcoming, though. Two stepbrothers did exist from marriage with Karen later on in life, but these were not the siblings. Speaking to KGTV, Lori said that “Erin didn’t want anything from anybody,” and that “All she wanted was to found out who her parents were.”

The Investigation Continues

Agreeing to take the DNA test herself, Karen then found the answer she had been hoping for all of her life: Erin was indeed her long-lost daughter. They spent some time texting back and forth, planning to meet up in person at San Diego Airport. Karen said of the opportunity: “Everything is for a reason, and this is the reason and the right time,”

For Erin, the story was equally heartfelt, who was heard saying: “We’ve never met, how do you love someone you’ve never met? You can love someone you never met, she gave me life.”

It’s a truly special story, but one that we imagine is not too unique at the moment. Tools such as Ancestry have brought together many households since it became so popular. Now, you could find it much easier to locate someone who you never knew existed in your family tree: just be warned, as some families are finding out more information than they had bargained for!

For those who grow up without full knowledge of who their parents are, the wait can be anguishing. You will often find many kernels of truth and half-truth along the way. This does make it hard to work out how close you are to finding out the truth: and it...

People Cutting Soap – An Oddly Satisfying Trend

You may be thinking that the only reason for getting a bar of soap is to shower; surprisingly, there’s more. Bar soaps have generated a lot of social media buzz. A new trend called “soap cutting” has been introduced by social media users on Instagram and YouTube.

Here, users make videos of themselves while they cut a bar of soap. This sounds crazy, but as with every other trend, there is a purpose for this.

Introducing ASMR Videos

Recently, Instagram and YouTube users have introduced a new trend known as ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) videos. These videos are aimed at helping viewers relax their senses, and helps to gently put them to sleep.

The trend features videos of someone eating crunchy foods, carving candles, playing with sticky slime, ruining their makeup, scooping ice cream, and cutting a large piece of bar soap.

ASMR Soap Queen

These videos bring with them a feeling that is unusual but pleasing. Different users try to be more engaging by using soaps of different colors. And considering the large audience that ASMR is getting, and the popularity that it has gained, it doesn’t seem like something that would go away anytime soon.

A Full-Time Job

Quite a number of users have turned this trend to an opportunity to earn some cash; and for some, it has become a full-time job. Nazish, known on Instagram as @asmr.crackle, has gained about 80,000 followers from her very excellent soap cutting videos. She also uploads soap cutting videos on YouTube and gets paid per video.

ASMR Crackle

However, it doesn’t seem like Nazish would stop her soap cutting soon. She makes videos on a daily basis. In as much as more people keep buying into the trend, she’ll keep cutting several bars of soap. “My account is a personal form of art therapy to relieve my own anxiety and insomnia,” she went on to say that is was another form of white noise.

As stated earlier, ASMR comes in different forms, and there’s one for everyone. You may like watching someone eat food, cut soap, or play with slime. There’s a wide range of over 11 million ASMR videos to select from.

Viewers of these videos described their experiences, and claim that they bring about a tingling feeling on their scalp and spine, coupled with an almost trancelike state of relaxation.”

Hope: Bambi Changes Homeless Man’s Life

After reading a story like this one, I wouldn’t be surprised if we all started making it a practice to pick through the trash for treasures. Apparently, you never know what you can find – and how much it’s worth! But the good luck of one Canadian homeless man is actually quite heart-warming.

Just Worth $20

Adam Gillian isn’t your average homeless man. In order to pay for food, he makes a practice of dumpster diving for valuable things to sell to Curiosity Inc., an antique store where he resides in Edmonton, Canada. In his search one day, he came across a picture of a scene from the Bambi movie.

Just to see if it was worth anything, he brought it to Alexander Archbold, the owner of Curiosity Inc. Alexander bought it from him for $20, and Adam was happy enough with the profit.

Worth More Than $20

However, Adam had no idea the value of what he had found – and neither did Archbold, at first! The picture turned out to be an original drawing from the Bambi movie, an extremely rare find.

It was so rare that the value of the picture was over $3,000! Now, Archbold could have kept all of this to himself, but instead, he began a search for Adam Gillian to give him the $1,700.35 – the total after fees – that he owed him.

Why So Sympathetic?

Going above and beyond to find success in his search, Archbold finally found Adam after making a YouTube video to record his hunt. Archbold shared the exciting news with Adam over lunch.

However, Archbold wasn’t finished yet. The antique store owner had himself experience homelessness at a young age and felt that he needed to do more to help Adam get off the streets. In a great act of kindness, Archbold began a GoFundMe page for this unique homeless man, spurred by their unique story.

Hero Groom Ditches Wedding To Fight Fire

When your big wedding day comes around, it’s only natural that you want to enjoy yourself. With so much stress – and so much investment – on the build-up, just enjoying your big day is the goal. However, for some people, the work never stops.

You might find that you spend way too much of your wedding policing guests and asking people – as politely as you can – to stop messing up everything.

Frustrating? You bet. For one groom, though, it’s a little different. When you choose to marry someone who is in a job as impressive as being a firefighter, you are agreeing to certain concessions.

So, when one groom decided to bail on the wedding that he’d spent so long planning, there was a natural shock. When you find out why he chose to do so, however, it becomes a little easier to accept.

Running away with someone else? unforgivable. Too drunk on the stag do and forget to turn up? Disgraceful. Gong away to fight a fire? Yeah … hard to argue against.

Jeremy Bourasa was to marry the love of his life, Krista, in their September 1st wedding in Minnesota. However, despite some problems on the run-up to the wedding, they managed to get everything prepared and properly.

Even though stuff like wedding venues letting them down, they managed to secure their venue at a place Jeremy loves: the St. Paul Park Fire Station.

They were worried a fire call might come in during the wedding but were told that others would deal with it. Despite doing everything they could to keep the wedding moving forward and with everything going to plan, a major call came in during the wedding photos.

A Major Incident

Sadly, the fire was totally out of control: they needed more brave firefighters to contain it. Krista could see he was desperate to help, not to let his friends and comrades down. So, she said: “I just looked over at Jeremy and I could just see it in his eyes. He felt so torn. And I said, ‘Go ahead and go, babe. They need you.’

“I’ve got the rest of my life with him. They needed him for that moment.” She said when speaking to KARE11.

It’s a truly amazing video, and shows his commitment to being a hero for his community.

As the couple had endured major familial tragedy due to fire, which had claimed the life of their nephew two years prior, it was plain to see that Jeremy was not willing to let anyone else suffer without trying his hardest to stop it.

Job done – and what a job. Well done to both of them – Jeremy and Krista, we salute you and wish the happiest of marriages together!

When your big wedding day comes around, it’s only natural that you want to enjoy yourself. With so much stress – and so much investment – on the build-up, just enjoying your big day is the goal. However, for some people, the work never stops.
