2018 Largest Ships On The Seas

While we don’t quite use sea travel to the extent of our ancestors, traveling via water is still pretty damn popular. Many people love to go to the sea because it allows a sense of liberation from the laws of the land. That being said, you might also suffer from problems with finding a ship of the right size to fit your ambitions. If you want some help in finding some of the biggest ships in the world, then here are some of the largest vessels still sailing the seven seas today.

CMA CGM Von Humboldt

The CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt, to be exact. This stunning explorer ship was built and named after the famous Alexander von Humboldt himself. This amazing ship was scheduled to be delivered in 201,3, and is capable of delivering an impressive speed of 20 knots despite being a dead weight of a whopping 187,624 tons.

It’s a huge ship, but it’s not the biggest on this latest – despite managing to reach a whopping 396m in size.

Emma Maersk

Just a touch more impressive in terms of size is the stunning Emma Maersk. This gigantic cruise ship is among the most popular on the planet, and has long stood the test of time as a hugely impressive E-class ship. It’s been around for over a decade, having been manufactured in 2006. Since then, it has become a very impressive part of the world of nautical development, with it at one stage being the largest ship ever created. Indeed, it was able to carry as many as 11,000 units at 20ft in size – each!

Esso Atlantic

At a whopping 406m in size, the Esso Atlantic is one of the leaders on this important list of stunning boats. Despite launching more than 40 years ago, in 1977, it was a hugely impressive cruise ship for the era.

Indeed, its impressive dead weight of 516,891 tons becomes even more impressive when you consider that it can hit top speeds of a whopping 15.6 knots. It’s a massive oil transfer tanker that has served as one of the most valuable ships to sail the seas for many a year.

Seawise Giant

The stunning Seawise Giant is, at 458m in length, the second largest ship that we could find. This amazing cruise ship was later known by other names like Knock Nevis and Mont, was a stunning ULCC supertanker. It held the distinction of having the greatest deadweight tonnage ever seen, with a whopping 657,019 tons making it the heaviest ship of any kind ever built at the time.

Given it could hit speeds of 16 knots, though, you would never know!

Prelude FLNG

This is the largest ship we could find still cutting around in 2018. With over 600,000 tons of displacement and with over 260,000 tons of steel, this is a hugely impressive model aircraft. Ships like this often stand out as they produce a stunning platform for everything from liquefied natural gas platforms to working offshore.

At 488m in length, you can be almost certain that this stunning ship is one of the largest ever to be produced.

Wait, What?! A Shrek & Puss-in-Boots Reboot? Already!?

Apparently, the world has run out of ideas. You see, whilst Shrek was fantastic at the time, it wasn’t anything tremendously new. It followed the same kind of premise and story as so many that came before it. The quality of animation and the way it’s delivered is tremendous, though – that’s not to say anything bad against Shrek. As a series, it’s quality. However, apparently, we’ve got to the stage where even Shrek is getting a reboot.

I used to laugh at elder family members bemoaning childhood classics of their own life being remade for a new generation. I didn’t think I’d see a childhood classic of my own, Shrek, turned into a reboot before my 30s. This is apparently close to happening, though. Apparently, Chris Meledandri, the mastermind behind Despicable Me among others, is being put in charge of the reboot by Universal, according to Variety.

Apparently, ogres aren’t really relevant in 2018 – so, expect some change in gender/orientation or a total swap-around of the roles. Let’s face it, reboots are often absolute drivel, and it’s not likely that this will go any better. The need to change things in a bid to keep it fresh (and to fit in with the more sanitized world it will arrive in) often leads to reboots being technically superior, bt far less pure and enjoyable than the first set.

Even more ridiculously, side-kick Puss in Boots is getting the same reboot. Even stranger is that apparently the idea is to get Eddie Murphy, Michael Myers and Antonio Banderas back together to do it all over again. I can’t really wrap my head around the concept of a reboot that uses all the same old cast but, uh, cool?

A rather fitting concept

As 2018 appears to be a year where people just don’t have a clue what they are doing, the quote from Meladandri that the “challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels,” hardly inspires confidence that this is a well though tout concept.’

This might be an absolute car crash, and it’s best we prepare for that. Without any real idea how to make it better or different from the original, I fear we might get a butchered version of the originals, devoid of the original patter and enjoyment while replaced with more sponsorship and dreadful puns.

Reboots. Eugh.

The Most Stunning Libraries Around The World

If you were to speak to someone of a generation prior to the present, you might hear them talk about libraries. While I won’t pretend that ‘millennials’ don’t know what a library is, some people will have spent little to no time in one. What’s the point? The internet is like the biggest library in the world – one you can access whenever you want, right?

Not really. Libraries are places of unique learning, companionship and considered debate. They are also some of the most stunning architectural works you will ever see. Don’t believe me? take a look into the following libraries from across the world, then.

Strahov Library

Among the most amazing libraries of the ‘normal’ world is that of the Strahov Library in Prague. This amazing location contains over 200,000 different volumes, and has maintained that beautiful and enriching design – even after severe bombardment back in the 1740s.

Today, it’s still a fine place to come and read a book and, architecturally, will be among the most amazing libraries that you ever sit within.

Ottobeuren Abbey

The first German abbey library that we wish to mention is the stunning opulence of Ottobueren Abbey. It’s a tremendous place to spend time; a rich and intimate location that holds many books and objects at one stage, it held as many as 10,000. It’s also a location where some amazing concerts take place, with sounds from some of the most amazing organs found across the continent will be heard.

Library of the Seitenstetten Abbey

Among the finest in Austria, this amazing building is the perfect peak of regality: a fine blend of blue and gold to help create the most meaningful and impressive image possible. It was founded in 1112, and today is surrounded by a beautiful garden with over 100 different kinds of rose to be enjoyed.

The Library of Wiblingen Abbey

One of the most stunning abbey libraries in the world, this German work of art is a must-see. The amazing artwork within is incredible, and it’s stood the test of time in terms of detail. The amazing curved nature of the building makes sure that it sticks out immediately.

A fine example of the rococo style of the past, these amazing works are easily some of the finest in the abbey library industry. Be sure to check this out next time you happen to find yourself in Germany; it’s a library well worth the diversion.

The Admont Abbey Library

This stunning piece of work is found in Austria, and is the largest monastery library on the planet. It’s fantastic, and contains a whopping 48 windows to let in plenty of light – and illuminate the simply incredible detail which is etched into each and every wall of the building.

It’s a stunning place to spend your time, and a decadent place to learn about the world. As far as grandiose libraries go, you would do well to find one more impressive than this.

So, which one will you choose to visit first? If you find it hard to stay quiet in a library, the beauty of each of these should help to stun you into silence!

The Earth Map Is A Lie!!!

Turns out the Earth actually is flat. Those YouTube accounts with suspiciously large followings might just be right after all.

Sorry, jokes aside. It turns out that the world map that most of us grew up observing, though, might not be true either. The world is not quite the way it was set out in the maps of old. Most of the maps that we see come from the Mercator projection. However, at a good bit over 450 years old, the map obviously has some limitations.

The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection on a flat surface, presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. The projection on a flat surface creates a distorted image of land masses and countries.

Instead, Google Maps has decided to stop using the old metric and start creating its own projection instead. Since it poorly maps out the size of countries properly, the Mercator projection often poorly projects the size of some locations. For example, climate scientist Neil formed a new map visualization which is a closer medium between the Mercator projection and other accepted projections.

Want to see just how odd this project can be at times? Take a look at this GIF – it shows you in perfect detail why this might not be the best way to estimate the size of nations.

Indeed, limitations like showing Greenland to be larger than the whole of Africa is a joke. At fourteen times the size of Greenland, it’s these limitations that make the Mercator projection more than a little wobbly all these years on. While once a very powerful and useful, today it’s possible that we can do even more.

Why the need for a change?

Well, the Mercator projection came to be in 1569, when Gerardus Mercator put it together. The famous Finnish cartographer was a major name in his time, and he was seen as the creator of a tool which made navigation much easier. By being able to plot a straight-line course whilst maintaining the true shape of country, it was very useful for the time.

However, convert the Mercator projection into a 3D globe, and it does not really work. Unless the flat Earth people are correct, it’s likely that this rule very much needed an update. Others claim that the Mercator projection needs to go as it presents a very European-sympathetic view of the world – to the point where some schools got rid of it and replaced it with the alternative maps made by Gall-Peters.

The 2018 release of the Equal Earth projection map is supposed to be the catch-all solution to bring an end to these constant arguments. However, we are sure that cartographers will continue to vociferously debate the pros and cons of each choice.

Incredible Star Wars Inspired Robot Up And Running

While the concept of building robotic platforms might be the thought process of evil masterminds, such technology is an exciting prospect. One man appears to have taken his sci-fi childhood inspirations to the next level, however. Hampshire-based Matt Denton has put together an absolutely incredible 2-tonne robot that has been awarded the Guinness World Book of Records award for “Largest Rideable Hexapod Robot” – while we aren’t sure on what competition may exist, it’s still a damn impressive accolade.

An incredible 9ft 2” by 16ft 4”, this incredible beast is easily one of the most enjoyable pieces of mechanical innovation we’ve seen for some time. It was apparently inspired by the famous AT-AT robot of Star Wars fame, especially from the Hoth battle in The Empire Strikes Back. This unique animatronics creation is instantly one of the coolest things we’ve seen, though it does strike a momentary realization that this is perhaps just a touch too similar to Doctor Octopus of Spider-Man fame.

Denton, then, makes the Guinness World Book of Records for 2019, with this incredible robot coming to life after a long-term construction process. Running access on its own HexEngine software, ‘Mantis’ is capable of moving at the comical speed of 0.6mph. That’s not too bad, though: the concept of one of these things being faster than a man is just not worth thinking about at present!

A technological marvel

Looking at the Mantis, it’s pretty damn hard not to be wowed by the work that has gone into its creation. The building of it began in 2009, close to a decade ago. With similar machines in the past built by Denton, albeit much smaller, he laid out the groundwork for what would be needed.

Working alongside Jason Lee, who worked on the Harry Potter films they managed to turn one of his old hexapods into a robot turtle …. With six legs.

By gaining the investment needed to get into building his hexapod for use underwater, Denton got to work. A 1.9 tonne version was built, with the aim being to try and get a similar understanding of the problems that would come with the eventual 200-tonne edition that was requested.

This version, Mark II, is just the first improvement after the chall

enging first Mark. Mentioning that he had “to become an expert in many areas!”, Denton spent much of his time reading up on what he needed to know to eventually make this work as he had intended

A childhood lover of machine creation, Matt said: “When I got to the age of 13, I was always taking them apart and rebuilding the and making Frankenstein toys out of two things, trying to make them faster or better or bigger!”

Working at places like Space Precinct, the TV show, and also at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Matt was able to make some huge career moves: including being involved in the creation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

This amazing story is just getting started, but we’re sure that we’ll hear a lot more about Matt Henson and the Mantis as the years and decades go by. Keep him in mind though: he could be one of the great minds of his generation!

Are You Left-Handed? You Should Read This

There are more right-handed people in the world. It is normal to see these people writing or performing normal actions using their right hand. On the other hand, a small group of people perform these regular things with their left hands. I am sure many people had at least one left-handed person in their class at school.

Do you remember how they couldn’t use tools such as the scissors? While left-handed people may face some challenges, there have been some remarkable artists who are left-handed. I also noticed many of them have excellent handwriting.

I found the following attributes that are peculiar to left-handed people.

Natural leadership instinct

It can also be observed that many left-handed people have a natural capacity to lead other people. And they do this effortlessly because it comes naturally. Some of the notable leaders in the UK, and the United States were left-handed. For example, Prince Charles and Prince Williams are left handed. Queen Elizabeth II was left-handed, and other past leaders such as George Bush, Barrack Obama, and Bill Clinton.

Twins are most likely left-handed

Did you know that a high percentage of twins turn out to be left-handed? The statistics show that it is either the two individuals are left-handed or only one of them. On the other hand, most babies from single births are right-handed.

Lefties are temperamental

Unfortunately, left-handed people are also known to be very impatient and quick-tempered. An explanation has been presented for this trend. The two hemispheres of a left-handed individual’s brain are frequently in communication. This means the parts of the brain that processes logical reasoning is conflicted by the right hemisphere that is in control of emotions. This is responsible for their quick temper.

Left-handed people have high IQ

So many studies have suggested that this is true. Left-handed people show more proficiency in the arts, math, logical reasoning, and spatial awareness. The general trends according to scientific reports show that left-handed people tend to have IQ’s higher than 140, which is the standard for being regarded as a genius. Some popular left-handed geniuses we know include Albert Einstein, Bill Gates, Charles Darwin, Isaac Newton, among others.

Physical strength and agility

While right-handed people rely on the only one part of their body to perform actions, left-handed people can easily adjust in different situations exhibiting more agility. They also tend to have stronger arms. This is because the left-handed individual develops both the right and left parts of their body during their lifetime.

Left-handed people can detect sounds better

The peculiar orientation of the brain in left-handed people has been identified as the reason they have better hearing capacities. These individuals can hear changes in tones, sounds, and pitch better than others. In the human brain, the right hemisphere is responsible for hearing. Left-handed people use the right part of their brains more frequently than the left side. This enhances its functions, subsequently improving hearing and sound detection.

Discovered: World’s Oldest Known Drawing

The art of drawing is, of course, one of the most powerful and revered forms of expression. The perfect way to show off an image or a concept that we couldn’t otherwise, drawing is a supremely powerful form of art. However, it’s an art-form that we have known about and used for millennia; we just didn’t know how many. That is all about to change, though, with the discovery of the oldest known drawing to man found recently in South Africa.

It was found on a small rock fragment in South Africa, and was dated to be something in the region of 73,000 years old. It’s go some very impressive cross-hatch lines drawn into the rock, using a red pigment to make sur it stands out from the natural stone. It was found in the Blombos Cave, on the southern coast of the nation.

If you want to get all millennial about it, it kind of looks like a hash-tag. It’s quite a cool and interesting little image to find, though, and definitely stands out as a very interesting piece of artistic discovery.

While we’ve previously found engravings which date back even further, this is the first drawing we’ve found of this particular kind. It was drawn using what is known as an ochre crayon to try and etch its own design onto the stone.

“Some Meaning”

According to the archaeologist involved in the finding, Christopher Henshilwood, he said when speaking to Reuters that: “The abrupt termination of all lines on the fragment edges indicates that the pattern originally extended over a larger surface,”

However, Henshilwood, who works at the University of Bergen, Norway, as well as the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, did say that while he was “hesitant to call it art”, it did have “some meaning to the maker”.

Indeed, this part of the world – Blombos Cave – appears to be a cradle for such findings, with items found like old beads, old ochre fragments and even some paint-making kits that were over 100,000 years old.

Indeed, modern man was expected to have appeared around 315,000 years ago – so it only took us about 250,000 years to start drawing!

Crazy: China Has An Internet Court

Should we be surprised? Well, considering the fact that there are millions of active internet users in China, there are bound to be so many disputes. The high demand for internet access can put a strain on the Telecommunication companies who may not provide the needed services. Or other cases of breached agreement during online shopping, and different types of internet services that need to be settled legally. What we know is these cases related to internet usage are heard in a special court.

In this court, citizens can find lasting and finding solutions to their grievances. The cases related to the internet are also between citizens. A contractual agreement, copyright infringement, investments or the wrong use of the internet which causes another person to experience financial loss or emotional distress are settled in the court.

To address these issues, there are two main courts in China that handle all internet related issues.

The first internet court in China was opened last year. It is located in the Hangzhou region, which is the eastern part of China. The court has been saddled with the responsibilities of handling all disputes related to internet usage and sale. The second court named the Beijing Internet Court will support these efforts. It is expected that a third court will soon be opened in the Guangzhou region, Southern China.

It is apparent these cases are on the increase in China. This is why the authorities in the country recently found the need to establish the second internet court in China in addition to the first court. The new court – the “Beijing Internet Court” was opened in Beijing and the ceremony was officially witnessed by the notable Chinese government and legal staff. With this new addition, all cases related to contract breaches involving intellectual property and other related internet-related crimes can be adequately addressed. These two courts will operate according to the legal provisions in the Chinese constitution. The aspects of the law will be applied to the use and sale of the internet in China.

It is understandable that these two courts have been established to maintain order in the e-commerce industry and among the users. Quicker judgments and consumer protection will go a long way to encourage all the users of these services to adhere to the rules and regulations while offering or using the internet in China.

According to the statistics revealed by the Beijing Higher People’s Court, the number of internet-related cases handled by the court is increasing. The numbers have risen from the previous years at a steady rate. Last year, the courts in China handled as many as thirty-seven thousand cases related to internet crimes and disputes.

To improve its services, the internet court in Beijing will be open 24-hours daily. The staff will include thirty-eight experienced judges who are familiar with the internet rules and related constitution in China. The president of the internet court Zhang Wen has stated that every case is tried according to the legal proceedings without prejudice. Details of on-going trials can be accessed through the digital litigation platforms where the final decisions made by the judges can also be viewed.

The legal system in China which handles internet-related disputes is also used to check foreign investors who wish to establish their brands in the Chinese market.

With a studio cranking out some truly tremendous content for 2019 and beyond, what can we expect from Netflix in the near future?

Central Park 5

This will especially be interesting to those of a political mindset. It’s built around the story of the Central Park Five; all sentenced to years in jail for attempted murder. Exonerated following confession, this TV series – directed by Ava DuVernay – is putting together a tremendous looking drama that shines a light on the sordid story that took place here.

This four-episode series is well worth looking out for, especially thanks to a certain someone’ proclamations about the case.

The Last Dance

Another interesting TV series about to come to Netflix is based around basketball star Michael Jordan. It’s going to focus on the basketball legend, who became a legend of competitive sport with his performances for the Chicago Bulls back in the day.

It’s going to be taken on by the excellent Jason Hehir, so we can expect that this will be able to make a positive story come to life. Jordan is easily one of the most influential sportsmen of the modern era, and is a wonderful example of what can be achieved.

It sounds very interesting, and with Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya behind it, it’s likely to be very fun for all of those looking to see what it has to bring to the table. Definitely worth your time if you are looking for a new supernatural show to enjoy.

The Umbrella Academy
