Read This: Recycling 101

I want to applaud you if you are one of the very special people who place your empty plastic containers in a recycling bin because you have just become an important part of the recycling process. This bottle will become something new and will continue to over and over again!

Sadly, approximately 70% of people will toss recyclable items in the trash bin. Very few people place recyclable items in their proper recycling bins as they should.  If you don’t recycle, it’s time to understand the process and what becomes of these plastic bottles.

Items that are placed in recyclable bins are picked up, sorted, and then ground into plastic flakes.  The flakes are then sorted by types and separated before being washed and dried.  These flakes are used to make so many things including clothing, carpet, cups, trays, fibers, bottles, and so many other items.

Not only are recycled items good for the environment but saves on energy as well.  One of the most overabundant items found in the trash is water bottles that thousands of people consume every day.

Recycling Saves Energy

According to the International Bottled Water Association, turning these old bottles into new ones will use 84% less energy. If everyone understood what an important role they play when they recycle items, they might look at the process in a new light.

The IBWA has launched a program “Put It In The Bin” which is a partner-friendly initiative focusing on educating people about how valuable it is to put recyclables in their proper bins so they can be made into something new and wonderful!

We all have busy lives and recycling isn’t always convenient or we just forget to recycle but it really is very important.  Take a look at these very easy steps that will help you make recycling a part of your life, every day.

The Bin Location:

It will be so much easier to recycle if you place the bin next to your trash can.  It will be a reminder that throwing your plastic bottle in the recycle bin is just as easy as throwing it in the trash.

The Caps:

Once you have finished your bottled beverage or water, put the cap back on the bottle and recycle.  Both the bottle and the cap are made from plastics that are in high-demand by recycling facilities.

Bring Items Hone:

If you’re away from home and can’t locate a bin, bring them home and place them in the recyclable bin next to your trash.  Have a bag available in your car to empty used bottles in and then bring them home to your recyclable bin.

More than 90% of Americans have access to a curbside bin or a drop-off center.  Set an alarm on your phone so you will remember to bring the recycling bin out to the curb on the day they pick up.

Buy Recyclables:

Buy items made from recycled materials to support the ongoing effort to recycle these items later on.

While there are many things that can be recycled, bottled water is the most common at a rate of 53.9%.  One plastic bottle can conserve enough energy to power a 60-watt bulb for 6 hours.

According to Recycle Across America, 5 recycled plastic bottles provide enough fiber to produce one square foot of carpet!   The possibilities are endless and all it takes is one small choice to recycle!

I want to applaud you if you are one of the very special people who place your empty plastic containers in a recycling bin because you have just become an important part of the recycling process. This bottle will become something new and will continue to over...

DNA Technology Brings Family Together After 52 Years

For those who grow up without full knowledge of who their parents are, the wait can be anguishing. You will often find many kernels of truth and half-truth along the way. This does make it hard to work out how close you are to finding out the truth: and it also makes it increasingly easy to find out you have been wrong.

The search can go on for years – sometimes decades. For Karen Leslie, though, the reunion with her daughter would take a whopping 52 years!

Karen was just 21 at the time when she met her husband, Dick when they fell pregnant with their daughter in 1967. Kicked out of her home for getting pregnant in this manner, she was unable to have the child due to affordability and thus made the gut-wrenching decision to have the child and then give her away to an adoption agency.

The hope was that she would one day see her again: and now, she can say that she has.

KGTV, a news outlet based in San Diego, ran a report on the meeting recently. They found that the Ancestry DNA program had connected Dicks’ daughters from a previous marriage to a woman who went by the name of Erin Chatterton. Chatterton was identified as a ‘sibling’ thanks to the service, so the investigation got underway.

When Dick reached out to his daughters, Lisa and Lori, he asked Lisa if she knew who this could be – no information was forthcoming, though. Two stepbrothers did exist from marriage with Karen later on in life, but these were not the siblings. Speaking to KGTV, Lori said that “Erin didn’t want anything from anybody,” and that “All she wanted was to found out who her parents were.”

The Investigation Continues

Agreeing to take the DNA test herself, Karen then found the answer she had been hoping for all of her life: Erin was indeed her long-lost daughter. They spent some time texting back and forth, planning to meet up in person at San Diego Airport. Karen said of the opportunity: “Everything is for a reason, and this is the reason and the right time,”

For Erin, the story was equally heartfelt, who was heard saying: “We’ve never met, how do you love someone you’ve never met? You can love someone you never met, she gave me life.”

It’s a truly special story, but one that we imagine is not too unique at the moment. Tools such as Ancestry have brought together many households since it became so popular. Now, you could find it much easier to locate someone who you never knew existed in your family tree: just be warned, as some families are finding out more information than they had bargained for!

For those who grow up without full knowledge of who their parents are, the wait can be anguishing. You will often find many kernels of truth and half-truth along the way. This does make it hard to work out how close you are to finding out the truth: and it...

People Cutting Soap – An Oddly Satisfying Trend

You may be thinking that the only reason for getting a bar of soap is to shower; surprisingly, there’s more. Bar soaps have generated a lot of social media buzz. A new trend called “soap cutting” has been introduced by social media users on Instagram and YouTube.

Here, users make videos of themselves while they cut a bar of soap. This sounds crazy, but as with every other trend, there is a purpose for this.

Introducing ASMR Videos

Recently, Instagram and YouTube users have introduced a new trend known as ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) videos. These videos are aimed at helping viewers relax their senses, and helps to gently put them to sleep.

The trend features videos of someone eating crunchy foods, carving candles, playing with sticky slime, ruining their makeup, scooping ice cream, and cutting a large piece of bar soap.

ASMR Soap Queen

These videos bring with them a feeling that is unusual but pleasing. Different users try to be more engaging by using soaps of different colors. And considering the large audience that ASMR is getting, and the popularity that it has gained, it doesn’t seem like something that would go away anytime soon.

A Full-Time Job

Quite a number of users have turned this trend to an opportunity to earn some cash; and for some, it has become a full-time job. Nazish, known on Instagram as @asmr.crackle, has gained about 80,000 followers from her very excellent soap cutting videos. She also uploads soap cutting videos on YouTube and gets paid per video.

ASMR Crackle

However, it doesn’t seem like Nazish would stop her soap cutting soon. She makes videos on a daily basis. In as much as more people keep buying into the trend, she’ll keep cutting several bars of soap. “My account is a personal form of art therapy to relieve my own anxiety and insomnia,” she went on to say that is was another form of white noise.

As stated earlier, ASMR comes in different forms, and there’s one for everyone. You may like watching someone eat food, cut soap, or play with slime. There’s a wide range of over 11 million ASMR videos to select from.

Viewers of these videos described their experiences, and claim that they bring about a tingling feeling on their scalp and spine, coupled with an almost trancelike state of relaxation.”

Hope: Bambi Changes Homeless Man’s Life

After reading a story like this one, I wouldn’t be surprised if we all started making it a practice to pick through the trash for treasures. Apparently, you never know what you can find – and how much it’s worth! But the good luck of one Canadian homeless man is actually quite heart-warming.

Just Worth $20

Adam Gillian isn’t your average homeless man. In order to pay for food, he makes a practice of dumpster diving for valuable things to sell to Curiosity Inc., an antique store where he resides in Edmonton, Canada. In his search one day, he came across a picture of a scene from the Bambi movie.

Just to see if it was worth anything, he brought it to Alexander Archbold, the owner of Curiosity Inc. Alexander bought it from him for $20, and Adam was happy enough with the profit.

Worth More Than $20

However, Adam had no idea the value of what he had found – and neither did Archbold, at first! The picture turned out to be an original drawing from the Bambi movie, an extremely rare find.

It was so rare that the value of the picture was over $3,000! Now, Archbold could have kept all of this to himself, but instead, he began a search for Adam Gillian to give him the $1,700.35 – the total after fees – that he owed him.

Why So Sympathetic?

Going above and beyond to find success in his search, Archbold finally found Adam after making a YouTube video to record his hunt. Archbold shared the exciting news with Adam over lunch.

However, Archbold wasn’t finished yet. The antique store owner had himself experience homelessness at a young age and felt that he needed to do more to help Adam get off the streets. In a great act of kindness, Archbold began a GoFundMe page for this unique homeless man, spurred by their unique story.

Hero Groom Ditches Wedding To Fight Fire

When your big wedding day comes around, it’s only natural that you want to enjoy yourself. With so much stress – and so much investment – on the build-up, just enjoying your big day is the goal. However, for some people, the work never stops.

You might find that you spend way too much of your wedding policing guests and asking people – as politely as you can – to stop messing up everything.

Frustrating? You bet. For one groom, though, it’s a little different. When you choose to marry someone who is in a job as impressive as being a firefighter, you are agreeing to certain concessions.

So, when one groom decided to bail on the wedding that he’d spent so long planning, there was a natural shock. When you find out why he chose to do so, however, it becomes a little easier to accept.

Running away with someone else? unforgivable. Too drunk on the stag do and forget to turn up? Disgraceful. Gong away to fight a fire? Yeah … hard to argue against.

Jeremy Bourasa was to marry the love of his life, Krista, in their September 1st wedding in Minnesota. However, despite some problems on the run-up to the wedding, they managed to get everything prepared and properly.

Even though stuff like wedding venues letting them down, they managed to secure their venue at a place Jeremy loves: the St. Paul Park Fire Station.

They were worried a fire call might come in during the wedding but were told that others would deal with it. Despite doing everything they could to keep the wedding moving forward and with everything going to plan, a major call came in during the wedding photos.

A Major Incident

Sadly, the fire was totally out of control: they needed more brave firefighters to contain it. Krista could see he was desperate to help, not to let his friends and comrades down. So, she said: “I just looked over at Jeremy and I could just see it in his eyes. He felt so torn. And I said, ‘Go ahead and go, babe. They need you.’

“I’ve got the rest of my life with him. They needed him for that moment.” She said when speaking to KARE11.

It’s a truly amazing video, and shows his commitment to being a hero for his community.

As the couple had endured major familial tragedy due to fire, which had claimed the life of their nephew two years prior, it was plain to see that Jeremy was not willing to let anyone else suffer without trying his hardest to stop it.

Job done – and what a job. Well done to both of them – Jeremy and Krista, we salute you and wish the happiest of marriages together!

2018 Largest Ships On The Seas

While we don’t quite use sea travel to the extent of our ancestors, traveling via water is still pretty damn popular. Many people love to go to the sea because it allows a sense of liberation from the laws of the land. That being said, you might also suffer from problems with finding a ship of the right size to fit your ambitions. If you want some help in finding some of the biggest ships in the world, then here are some of the largest vessels still sailing the seven seas today.

CMA CGM Von Humboldt

The CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt, to be exact. This stunning explorer ship was built and named after the famous Alexander von Humboldt himself. This amazing ship was scheduled to be delivered in 201,3, and is capable of delivering an impressive speed of 20 knots despite being a dead weight of a whopping 187,624 tons.

It’s a huge ship, but it’s not the biggest on this latest – despite managing to reach a whopping 396m in size.

Emma Maersk

Just a touch more impressive in terms of size is the stunning Emma Maersk. This gigantic cruise ship is among the most popular on the planet, and has long stood the test of time as a hugely impressive E-class ship. It’s been around for over a decade, having been manufactured in 2006. Since then, it has become a very impressive part of the world of nautical development, with it at one stage being the largest ship ever created. Indeed, it was able to carry as many as 11,000 units at 20ft in size – each!

Esso Atlantic

At a whopping 406m in size, the Esso Atlantic is one of the leaders on this important list of stunning boats. Despite launching more than 40 years ago, in 1977, it was a hugely impressive cruise ship for the era.

Indeed, its impressive dead weight of 516,891 tons becomes even more impressive when you consider that it can hit top speeds of a whopping 15.6 knots. It’s a massive oil transfer tanker that has served as one of the most valuable ships to sail the seas for many a year.

Seawise Giant

The stunning Seawise Giant is, at 458m in length, the second largest ship that we could find. This amazing cruise ship was later known by other names like Knock Nevis and Mont, was a stunning ULCC supertanker. It held the distinction of having the greatest deadweight tonnage ever seen, with a whopping 657,019 tons making it the heaviest ship of any kind ever built at the time.

Given it could hit speeds of 16 knots, though, you would never know!

Prelude FLNG

This is the largest ship we could find still cutting around in 2018. With over 600,000 tons of displacement and with over 260,000 tons of steel, this is a hugely impressive model aircraft. Ships like this often stand out as they produce a stunning platform for everything from liquefied natural gas platforms to working offshore.

At 488m in length, you can be almost certain that this stunning ship is one of the largest ever to be produced.

Wait, What?! A Shrek & Puss-in-Boots Reboot? Already!?

Apparently, the world has run out of ideas. You see, whilst Shrek was fantastic at the time, it wasn’t anything tremendously new. It followed the same kind of premise and story as so many that came before it. The quality of animation and the way it’s delivered is tremendous, though – that’s not to say anything bad against Shrek. As a series, it’s quality. However, apparently, we’ve got to the stage where even Shrek is getting a reboot.

I used to laugh at elder family members bemoaning childhood classics of their own life being remade for a new generation. I didn’t think I’d see a childhood classic of my own, Shrek, turned into a reboot before my 30s. This is apparently close to happening, though. Apparently, Chris Meledandri, the mastermind behind Despicable Me among others, is being put in charge of the reboot by Universal, according to Variety.

Apparently, ogres aren’t really relevant in 2018 – so, expect some change in gender/orientation or a total swap-around of the roles. Let’s face it, reboots are often absolute drivel, and it’s not likely that this will go any better. The need to change things in a bid to keep it fresh (and to fit in with the more sanitized world it will arrive in) often leads to reboots being technically superior, bt far less pure and enjoyable than the first set.

Even more ridiculously, side-kick Puss in Boots is getting the same reboot. Even stranger is that apparently the idea is to get Eddie Murphy, Michael Myers and Antonio Banderas back together to do it all over again. I can’t really wrap my head around the concept of a reboot that uses all the same old cast but, uh, cool?

A rather fitting concept

As 2018 appears to be a year where people just don’t have a clue what they are doing, the quote from Meladandri that the “challenge for us has been to find something that really does feel like it’s not simply yet another film in a series of sequels,” hardly inspires confidence that this is a well though tout concept.’

This might be an absolute car crash, and it’s best we prepare for that. Without any real idea how to make it better or different from the original, I fear we might get a butchered version of the originals, devoid of the original patter and enjoyment while replaced with more sponsorship and dreadful puns.

Reboots. Eugh.

The Most Stunning Libraries Around The World

If you were to speak to someone of a generation prior to the present, you might hear them talk about libraries. While I won’t pretend that ‘millennials’ don’t know what a library is, some people will have spent little to no time in one. What’s the point? The internet is like the biggest library in the world – one you can access whenever you want, right?

Not really. Libraries are places of unique learning, companionship and considered debate. They are also some of the most stunning architectural works you will ever see. Don’t believe me? take a look into the following libraries from across the world, then.

Strahov Library

Among the most amazing libraries of the ‘normal’ world is that of the Strahov Library in Prague. This amazing location contains over 200,000 different volumes, and has maintained that beautiful and enriching design – even after severe bombardment back in the 1740s.

Today, it’s still a fine place to come and read a book and, architecturally, will be among the most amazing libraries that you ever sit within.

Ottobeuren Abbey

The first German abbey library that we wish to mention is the stunning opulence of Ottobueren Abbey. It’s a tremendous place to spend time; a rich and intimate location that holds many books and objects at one stage, it held as many as 10,000. It’s also a location where some amazing concerts take place, with sounds from some of the most amazing organs found across the continent will be heard.

Library of the Seitenstetten Abbey

Among the finest in Austria, this amazing building is the perfect peak of regality: a fine blend of blue and gold to help create the most meaningful and impressive image possible. It was founded in 1112, and today is surrounded by a beautiful garden with over 100 different kinds of rose to be enjoyed.

The Library of Wiblingen Abbey

One of the most stunning abbey libraries in the world, this German work of art is a must-see. The amazing artwork within is incredible, and it’s stood the test of time in terms of detail. The amazing curved nature of the building makes sure that it sticks out immediately.

A fine example of the rococo style of the past, these amazing works are easily some of the finest in the abbey library industry. Be sure to check this out next time you happen to find yourself in Germany; it’s a library well worth the diversion.

The Admont Abbey Library

This stunning piece of work is found in Austria, and is the largest monastery library on the planet. It’s fantastic, and contains a whopping 48 windows to let in plenty of light – and illuminate the simply incredible detail which is etched into each and every wall of the building.

It’s a stunning place to spend your time, and a decadent place to learn about the world. As far as grandiose libraries go, you would do well to find one more impressive than this.

So, which one will you choose to visit first? If you find it hard to stay quiet in a library, the beauty of each of these should help to stun you into silence!

The Earth Map Is A Lie!!!

Turns out the Earth actually is flat. Those YouTube accounts with suspiciously large followings might just be right after all.

Sorry, jokes aside. It turns out that the world map that most of us grew up observing, though, might not be true either. The world is not quite the way it was set out in the maps of old. Most of the maps that we see come from the Mercator projection. However, at a good bit over 450 years old, the map obviously has some limitations.

The Mercator projection is a cylindrical map projection on a flat surface, presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. The projection on a flat surface creates a distorted image of land masses and countries.

Instead, Google Maps has decided to stop using the old metric and start creating its own projection instead. Since it poorly maps out the size of countries properly, the Mercator projection often poorly projects the size of some locations. For example, climate scientist Neil formed a new map visualization which is a closer medium between the Mercator projection and other accepted projections.

Want to see just how odd this project can be at times? Take a look at this GIF – it shows you in perfect detail why this might not be the best way to estimate the size of nations.

Indeed, limitations like showing Greenland to be larger than the whole of Africa is a joke. At fourteen times the size of Greenland, it’s these limitations that make the Mercator projection more than a little wobbly all these years on. While once a very powerful and useful, today it’s possible that we can do even more.

Why the need for a change?

Well, the Mercator projection came to be in 1569, when Gerardus Mercator put it together. The famous Finnish cartographer was a major name in his time, and he was seen as the creator of a tool which made navigation much easier. By being able to plot a straight-line course whilst maintaining the true shape of country, it was very useful for the time.

However, convert the Mercator projection into a 3D globe, and it does not really work. Unless the flat Earth people are correct, it’s likely that this rule very much needed an update. Others claim that the Mercator projection needs to go as it presents a very European-sympathetic view of the world – to the point where some schools got rid of it and replaced it with the alternative maps made by Gall-Peters.

The 2018 release of the Equal Earth projection map is supposed to be the catch-all solution to bring an end to these constant arguments. However, we are sure that cartographers will continue to vociferously debate the pros and cons of each choice.

Incredible Star Wars Inspired Robot Up And Running

While the concept of building robotic platforms might be the thought process of evil masterminds, such technology is an exciting prospect. One man appears to have taken his sci-fi childhood inspirations to the next level, however. Hampshire-based Matt Denton has put together an absolutely incredible 2-tonne robot that has been awarded the Guinness World Book of Records award for “Largest Rideable Hexapod Robot” – while we aren’t sure on what competition may exist, it’s still a damn impressive accolade.

An incredible 9ft 2” by 16ft 4”, this incredible beast is easily one of the most enjoyable pieces of mechanical innovation we’ve seen for some time. It was apparently inspired by the famous AT-AT robot of Star Wars fame, especially from the Hoth battle in The Empire Strikes Back. This unique animatronics creation is instantly one of the coolest things we’ve seen, though it does strike a momentary realization that this is perhaps just a touch too similar to Doctor Octopus of Spider-Man fame.

Denton, then, makes the Guinness World Book of Records for 2019, with this incredible robot coming to life after a long-term construction process. Running access on its own HexEngine software, ‘Mantis’ is capable of moving at the comical speed of 0.6mph. That’s not too bad, though: the concept of one of these things being faster than a man is just not worth thinking about at present!

A technological marvel

Looking at the Mantis, it’s pretty damn hard not to be wowed by the work that has gone into its creation. The building of it began in 2009, close to a decade ago. With similar machines in the past built by Denton, albeit much smaller, he laid out the groundwork for what would be needed.

Working alongside Jason Lee, who worked on the Harry Potter films they managed to turn one of his old hexapods into a robot turtle …. With six legs.

By gaining the investment needed to get into building his hexapod for use underwater, Denton got to work. A 1.9 tonne version was built, with the aim being to try and get a similar understanding of the problems that would come with the eventual 200-tonne edition that was requested.

This version, Mark II, is just the first improvement after the chall

enging first Mark. Mentioning that he had “to become an expert in many areas!”, Denton spent much of his time reading up on what he needed to know to eventually make this work as he had intended

A childhood lover of machine creation, Matt said: “When I got to the age of 13, I was always taking them apart and rebuilding the and making Frankenstein toys out of two things, trying to make them faster or better or bigger!”

Working at places like Space Precinct, the TV show, and also at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, Matt was able to make some huge career moves: including being involved in the creation of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!

This amazing story is just getting started, but we’re sure that we’ll hear a lot more about Matt Henson and the Mantis as the years and decades go by. Keep him in mind though: he could be one of the great minds of his generation!
