What It’s Like To Work For Elon Musk

70-hour work weeks and tasked with doing the impossible, these are some of the things employees revealed about working at Tesla under their cult-like enigmatic leader Elon Musk.

Business Insider spoke with 42 Tesla employees about what it is like to work at one of the world’s most ambitious companies. The company’s CEO, Elon Musk, is considered a visionary, as well as unpredictably demanding according to employees. Long hours and an intense work environment which they call “the Tesla life” are part and parcel of working for Tesla. Some say the attitude of worship some of their colleagues have toward Musk, is something like a “cult”.

The 5.3-million-square-foot Fremont factory, where Tesla’s all-electric cars are made is one of the world’s most advanced automotive production facilities, employing around 10,000 people. However, it is also home to the unfolding drama as Tesla struggles to meet demands for its vehicles as investors grow skeptical with each passing day.

However, for the famous CEO, it is his personal kingdom where boundaries of home and work are blurred. The method to his deepening madness never seems clear. “Elon basically does what he wants, whenever he wants,” says an unnamed employee. At 47, Musk is at the forefront of an electric revolution as he uses his force of will, grit, and stubbornness to make this vision a reality. Musk’s loyal following of employees believe if he asks them to do the impossible, they can do it. Some liken Musk to a drug.

“My favorite thing about the job is to take that thing that seemed impossible and blow it up,” said Marco Batra, a six-year Tesla veteran and the global sales delivery operations manager. Tesla employees said they love the company’s mission of making beautiful electric cars and solar products, supposedly healing the earth, and disrupting the old world along the way. To many, it’s a noble cause that inspires them to give it their all.

“This is the future,” said Branton Phillips, a material handler for Tesla Production Control at the Fremont facility. “I like the whole image, what we’re doing, the mission. We’re making history.” This is exactly the type of “startup culture” many larger established corporations strive for.

However, it may also be Tesla’s biggest weakness. The scrappy, feel-good company, built in Musk’s image, also bears many of his flaws — a place where long hours, chaos, callousness, and contradictions can grind workers down, many employees reported. Tesla burned through $3.4 billion in 2017, and another $1.05 billion in the first quarter of this year, while posing record loses. Many fear the rate of spending will result in the company running out of money by year’s end.

“There’s a big cult-like following for Elon,” said one software engineer said. “[At] no company have I worked for, in our quarterly meetings, do you clap when a CEO walks into the podium. So that’s just something that people do at Tesla.” At 6-foot-2, with broad shoulders, Musk is an imposing man. “I ran into him a couple times. He’s like this force field,” a former internal communications employee said. “You could almost see the air parting.”

Employees describe Musk as everything from aloof and intimidating to friendly and emotional. Discussions with him are littered with f-bombs, and yet he is also known to give production workers bear hugs when the company reaches a milestone. Musk works so many hours at Tesla’s 24/7 production world that virtually everyone interviewed had a story about finding him with a pillow and blanket asleep somewhere, including the factory floor, under a desk, and in a conference room. Musk has admitted he even uses the sleep-aiding machine Ambien to get rest sometimes.

But Musk’s deadlines can also seem random, even mean-spirited, to those tasked with achieving them. “He’d order a project and we’d say, ‘We need 10 weeks,’ and he’d say, ‘You get six.’ And then two weeks later, ‘We need it two weeks earlier than that,’ so you end up with four, just to hit a number. It’s an impossible workload. They’re burning people out like crazy,” one mechanical engineer said.

Tesla’s work-life balance scored 2.6 out of 5, according to Glassdoor user reviews, which was far lower than other car companies. The average employee tenure at Tesla is 2.1 years, which is at the low end when compared to other tech companies such as Apple, where the average tenure is five years, based on data gathered by LinkedIn. “You’re not there to be creative. You’re there to fulfill his mission,” a software engineer said. “If you don’t understand that and you’re talking about your feelings, you’re probably going to get fired.”

A former VP who reported to Musk said, “He is terrible, terrible at execution and terrible at management. The entire management structure at Tesla is impotent and terrible. There are exceptions, but, on average, most managers at Tesla have no idea what they’re doing.”

Now, as pressure mounts, Musk’s management style is under scrutiny, and a growing number of employees and investors are wondering whether it’s time for the company to grow up. When asked about Musk’s management style, Tesla pointed to its mission. “What Tesla is doing is incredibly difficult, as evidenced by the fact that Ford is the only other US car company to never have gone bankrupt,” a Tesla representative said.

Final Doom 2 Secret Discovered After 24 Years

After 24 years of blasting demons, one fan has unlocked the final secret of the 1994 video game, Doom II.

Doom II: Hell on Earth, originally released on MS-DOS on 30 September 1994,  followed up to its namesake predecessor Doom to become one of the most successful games of the decade. The highly rated sequel helped establish the long-lasting legacy of the popular video game series. The second installment takes the protagonist, the aptly named “Doomguy”, from Mars to the apocalyptic regions of Earth. Doom II was bigger and bloodier than the original and remains one of the progenitors of the first person shooter genre.

For the first time in game’s history, gamers can celebrate 100% completion of the game without any mods or cheats all thanks to YouTuber Zero Master. John Romero, co-creator of the Doom series, confirmed through a Tweet that the door to the game’s final secret had indeed finally been unlocked. He offered his congratulations and then explained how it can be achieved.

Since the game’s debut all those years ago, fans the last of the 10 secret areas found in the game’s Industrial Zone was a hot topic among fans. Although fans were able to uncover the secret, activating it proved challenging without using cheat codes. According to both Zero Master and Romero, in order to activate the final secret, Doomguy needs to be pushed into the teleporter by an enemy. As the video demonstrates, Zero Master managed to activate the secret following a cat and mouse chase as they used a Pain Elemental enemy to nudge themselves to the teleporter.

Many Doom experts had long considered the secret to be a glitch in the game’s code as nobody was able to unlock it for so long. Romero, however, clearly pointed out that he had always known how to unlock the final piece of this head-scratching puzzle in the game’s 15th level and simply waited until someone figured it out.

In an age where gamers are used to exploring every nook and cranny of a video game in order to collect every last trophy and easter egg, waiting over two decades to find a game’s last secret is truly a noteworthy feat. Whether by chance or by process of elimination, Zero Master can proudly claim the title of being the person to ever complete Doom II as it was intended.

Hilarious Signs Found Only in Texas

Texas is so big, its people often refer to the rest of the United States as “that sketchy place outside of Texas.” Proudly known as the Lone Star State, Texas loves to immortalize its former status as an independent republic as well as its historic struggle for independence from Mexico. Bigger than many countries, it would be the 39th largest country by land mass if it were a nation.

Therefore it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Texans have their own dandy sense of humor. Possessing a culture larger than life, Texans are renown for their good old-fashioned manners and their smiles as bright as day. There’s a reason the origin of Texas’s name comes from the word “taysha”, which means “friends” in Native American Caddo.

Let’s take a look to see the most charming Texas signs ever displayed.

That’s One Cold Beer

Well then, hell must’ve frozen over. Why not bury your sorrows with a cold one mulling over that heartless, good for nothing, ex of yours who you’re happy to see the back of. If the beer is as the sign says, we better quit talkin’ and start drinkin’.

Creepiest Celeb Doppelgängers Ever

What is a doppelgänger? A doppelgänger is a German word which has entered the English language and means a non-biologically related look-alike or double of a living person. The word literally translates to “double-goer”.

After seeing these celebrity photos you will be asking yourself if you too have a doppelgänger of your own. In the small world of celebrities, finding a lookalike seems to be easier than one would think. Not only do many of these celebrities share similar faces, but also heights and body proportions. It seems finding your lookalike isn’t limited to geographical location as several of these famous names cross borders, continents and even racial and language barriers.

David Schwimmer & Shoplifter

A few weeks ago a shoplifter got caught on CCTV in Blackpool, England. The internet went wild with the police footage of… David Schwimmer shoplifting! The guy was seen carrying a box of beers right in front of the security camera. Not so smart if you ask the average Joe. But when you think about it, if you look like someone else, why would you care if you’re on the internet?!

Lucy Hale & Selena Gomez

Star of “Pretty Little Liars”, actress Lucy Hale has certainly been on the receiving end of having the (unfortunate) luck of looking similar to singer Selena Gomez. While Gomez was dating Justin Bieber, a person from the public tried stealing Hale’s cellphone hoping to call Bieber.

In fact, while Gomez was appearing on “Wizards of Waverly Place”, fans would reportedly get the two mixed up all the time. Another time a lady at an airport took a picture with Hale and the two got talking. Hale realized the lady thought she was Gomez, however, she didn’t utter a word as she didn’t want to “crush her dreams”.

Recently Hale was seen in the television series “Life Sentence” and is currently working on the independent film “A Nice Girl Like You”. Gomez, on the other hand, voiced Mavis in the computer-animated comedy film Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation released this year. She is also the executive producer of the television show “13 Reasons Why”.

How To Prevent Phones From Damaging Your Eyes

New research outlines how constantly looking at digital devices can lead to irreversible damage to your health.

Why Are Cell Phones Damaging Your Eyes?

Optical chemistry researchers at the University of Toledo (UT) discovered how blue light from digital devices and the sun transform critical molecules in our eyes’ retina into cell killers. This leads to age-related macular degeneration which is a leading cause of blindness in the United States.

Macular degeneration is an incurable eye disease which results in a serious loss of vision due to the death of photoreceptor cells in the retina. These cells require molecules called retinal to sense light and trigger a sequence of signals to the brain. On average this disease begins when a person is in their 50s or 60s. “You need a continuous supply of retinal molecules if you want to see,” Dr. Ajith Karunarathne, assistant professor in the UT Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, said. “Photoreceptors are useless without retinal, which is produced in the eye.”

Blue light is everywhere as it is emitted by computers, televisions, and smartphones. According to the findings, when exposed to blue light, photoreceptor cells do not regenerate in the eye, meaning once they are dead, they are gone forever. Exposure to blue light at night has also been linked to cancer, diabetes, heart disease and obesity according to another study conducted by Harvard University recently.

The UT research found that blue light exposure triggers retinal reactions which generate poisonous chemical molecules in photoreceptor cells. “We are being exposed to blue light continuously, and the eye’s cornea and lens cannot block or reflect it,” Karunarathne admitted. “It’s no secret that blue light harms our vision by damaging the eye’s retina.”

The good news is that there is a way to prevent the cells from dying. Researchers found a molecule called alpha-tocopherol, a vitamin E derivative and natural antioxidant in the eye and body, stops the affected cells from dying. As a person ages, or if their immune system is suppressed, however, their bodies lose the ability to fight against the attack by retinal and blue light. Karunarathne hopes the research leads to the invention of preventative measures, such as special eye drops to protect the retinal.

By learning more about the mechanisms of blindness, they “hope to find a way to protect the vision of children growing up in a high-tech world,” said Karunarathne.

How Can You Prevent Damage To Your Eyes?

Fortunately, some technology companies have now begun adding blue light filters to their products screens. Many computers and cell phones today come equipped with a blue light (sometimes labeled night light) feature which can be selected from the settings of the device. Alternatively, downloading blue light software is an alternative option.

Wearing sunglasses which filter ultraviolet (UV) and blue light rays also protect the eyes, as well as avoiding looking at phones or tablets in the dark. Today, specially designed glasses can be purchased which blocks out UV light. In the hours leading up to bedtime, refraining from looking at digital devices, and exposure to bright lights during the day affects not only sleep at night but also mood and alertness according to the Harvard study.

Blinking regularly and following the 20-20-20 rule of looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes will also allow your eyes to rest and increase blinking, thus improving reflexes and tear production.

Scientists: New Mineral Could End Global Warning

A team of scientists in Canada have created a mineral which strips carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, theoretically ending the threat of climate change to our planet.

Scientists developed an accelerated process to produce magnesite, a mineral which traps greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, at room temperature. “Our work shows two things,” said Project leader Professor Ian Power. “Firstly, we have explained how and how fast magnesite forms naturally. This is a process which takes hundreds to thousands of years in nature at Earth’s surface. The second thing we have done is to demonstrate a pathway which speeds this process up dramatically.”

Magnesite naturally occurs in nature in rock form and is used in jewelry and various industrial processes. Its carbon-storing capacity is already known to scientists. In nature, magnesite takes hundreds of thousands of years to form, however, researchers in the study used tiny polystyrene microspheres to speed up the formation of carbon dioxide grabbing magnesite to just 72 days.

Furthermore, in order to speed up this process, scientists significantly reduced the temperature of the magnesite and added the polystyrene microspheres as a catalyst. They further discovered that the microspheres could be re-used as they were unchanged by the production process, thus making the process all the more efficient. “Using microspheres means that we were able to speed up magnesite formation by orders of magnitude. This process takes place at room temperature, meaning that magnesite production is extremely energy efficient.”

One tonne of magnesite can cut down half a tonne of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. This means if experts can somehow mass produce the mineral, they would then be able to reduce carbon dioxide levels dramatically. “This depends on several variables, including the price of carbon and the refinement of the sequestration technology, but we now know that the science makes it do-able.”

In theory, this method would be able to suck carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as it is released. If combined with reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, it would slow down or even reverse the effects of climate change. The findings are based on results presented at the Goldschmidt geochemistry conference in Boston by Professor Ian Power and his team from Trent University, Ontario, Canada.

Climate change, sometimes referred to as global warming, is the theory the planet’s climate is heating up to life-threatening levels. The primary cause of global warming, argue advocates, is man-made carbon dioxide emissions. They claim that carbon dioxide creates a type of thermal blanket around the earth’s atmosphere which traps heat which would otherwise be released into space. Hence, the global push to cut-down on carbon emissions.

The research was funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).

Bringing Sixty Back: Maddona Turns 60

“People say I’m controversial,” Madonna, who turns 60 today, told a music-industry audience in 2016. “But I think the most controversial thing I have ever done is to stick around.”

The celebrated pop star, actress, writer, and director was born on the 16th of August 1958 and given the name Madonna Louise Ciccone by her Catholic parents. Since first breaking onto the music scene in the late 1970s, The Material Girl has now sold more than 300 million records worldwide and performed on 10 concert tours. According to Guinness World Records, she is the best-selling female recording artist of all time.

In 1977 the Queen of Pop moved to the Big Apple to study dance while working as a model. She soon decided to pursue a musical career and began to record demos with her boyfriend Stephen Bray. After a stint as a band member in the Breakfast Club, she decided to embark on a solo career.

Holiday” was Madge’s first breakthrough hit in the US, peaking at number 16, with “Material Girl” reaching number 3 and “Like A Virgin” being the first of her twelve number-one hits. 1985 proved to be a landmark year for “M” as her debut tour sold out. She also played at the historic Live Aid charity concert. The same year she featured in her first mainstream film, Desperately Seeking Susan for which she received generally positive reviews from both critics and viewers.

A polarizing figure, the Queen of Reinvention has never been one to shy away from controversy. From burning crosses and kissing a black saint in her hit single “Like A Prayer“, tackling teenage pregnancy in “Papa Don’t Preach“, supporting the LGBT community during the peak era of HIV news, publishing a controversial “coffee table” photo book of herself in a number of explicit poses in the early 90s, locking lips with Brittany Spears and Christina Aguilera on stage at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003, the MDNA singer has certainly had her fair share of iconic moments. Throughout the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s, Madonna has maintained her unapologetic sex-positive, no-holds-barred image.

The singer’s list of accomplishments include Grammys, MTV awards, Billboard awards, and a Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role as the eponymous Evita in a musical or comedy, among numerous others. In 2008 Maddy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. She is also the highest-grossing solo touring artist of all time with over $1.4 billion earned from concert tours alone. She has also written a series of children’s books, having released seven picture books and twelve chapter books so far.

Twice married, once to American actor Sean Penn, and once to English director and Producer Guy Ritchie with whom she had a son, Rocco. Madonna is the mother to six children, including four she adopted from Malawi where she has focused most of her charity work. She had her first child Lourdes Maria with then-boyfriend and fitness trainer Carlos Leon.

Recently, Madonna told the BBC in 2017 that performing at smaller intimate shows “is something I’m exploring right now”. She said she is looking to perform at a set venue as opposed to touring, “The idea of doing a show that doesn’t travel the world but stays in one place.”

Aretha Franklin’s “Death Is Imminent”

Update: 16/08/2018 – It has now been reported Aretha Franklin passed away aged 76 in her Detroit home surrounded by family, today. The cause is reported to be advanced pancreatic cancer.

The Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin is reported to be gravely ill in hospice care at her home. Currently, she is surrounded by her family and friends wishing to say goodbye.

The singer has been battling cancer for some time it has been rumored. “Prepare yourself, she’s dying.” A longtime friend and source close to the singer is reported as telling TMZ. The source adds the iconic diva was down to 86 pounds and her health was failing. The source says 2 weeks ago everyone in Aretha’s circle was told, “She could go any time.”

A friend of the songstress confirmed to People that the singer had “been ill for a long time” and her loved ones had been warned her “death is imminent.” Franklin’s nephew, Tim Franklin, also confirmed the 76-year-old star’s status to People following the anonymous source, revealing that the soul singer’s family was “asking for prayers and privacy.” Tim added while the singer “is sick,” her family was “trying to keep her spirits up and go from there.”

A career spanning six decades, the 18-time Grammy award winner first started singing gospel music at the Detroit Church where her father was a minister. In 1960 she signed her first record label, and eight years later she already had chart-toppers like “Respect,” “Chain of Fools”, and “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” under her belt. In 1987, Franklin became the first women to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Franklin performed at the inauguration of several US Presidents such as  Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama. In 2005, President George W. Bush awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Her last performance was at a private Elton John AIDS Foundation event in November 2017.

In February last year, the artist announced she would stop touring, despite booking concerts. Earlier this year, she canceled a pair of scheduled performances on doctors orders according to Rolling Stone.

“We believe she’ll pull through it, she believes she’ll pull through it, and that’s the important thing,” Tim Franklin conceded.

Oscars Announce New “Popular Film” Category

Change is coming to the Academy Awards, it was announced on the Oscar’s official Twitter page. A new category is being designed to honor “outstanding achievement in popular film”.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also revealed in a statement sent out to its members that the live broadcast would be shortened to 3-hours in length, with certain award categories (unknown as of yet) being announced during ad breaks. “To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.”

With the eligibility requirements and other key details for the new category to be forthcoming, there has been heavy criticism for the move. It has been described as being ham-fisted at best and discriminatory at worst. The decision has been dubbed insulting as being popular has never before been seen as an artistic achievement.

The message seems to suggest that a popular product can’t be high art, or that a high-quality product can’t be popular, is insulting. And as such, many feel that’s what the Oscars do every year. This also solidifies the feeling among producers who worry that should their film become a blockbuster, it may ruin their artistic credibility.

With this year’s edition of the Academy Awards being the lowest-rated telecast on record, the board attempted the bridge the widening gap between films people want to see and the films the academy wants to reward.

Dubbed the “Popcorn Oscar”, the films likely make up the list of nominees for this category are bound to be predicted based on their worldwide box-office gross. This means blockbusters like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, as well as their fan-favorite stars, will be guaranteed a presence at the ceremony.

Some say, the Oscars’ ratings are tanking for the same reason TV ratings are declining across the board: The outdated monoculture supporting it simply doesn’t exist anymore. Hence, this change doesn’t make Oscar voters seem more in touch, they argue, as all it does is make their elitism that much more clear. The Academy has a long reputation of snubbing hit films whose genres aren’t usually considered Oscar material.

Actor Rob Lowe perhaps best summed up everyone’s feelings, “The film business passed away today with the announcement of the ‘popular’ film Oscar,” he tweeted. “It had been in poor health for a number of years. It is survived by sequels, tentpoles, and vertical integration.”

People Are Getting Surgery To Look Like Snapchat Filters!

“Snapchat Dysmorphia” has now officially entered the medical lexicon. According to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), an astonishing number of plastic surgery patient now list “selfies” as a primary motivation for going under the knife.

The paper states, “A new phenomenon, dubbed ‘Snapchat dysmorphia,’ has patients seeking out cosmetic surgery to look like filtered versions of themselves instead, with fuller lips, bigger eyes, or a thinner nose. This is an alarming trend because those filtered selfies often present an unattainable look and are blurring the line of reality and fantasy for these patients.”

Whether we like it or not, we live in an era of flawlessly edited selfies and ever-evolving standards of beauty. The popularity of image-based social media has put Photoshop and filters in everyone’s arsenal, unlike yonder years when only those in the spotlight had access to these tools. Now, it is not just celebrities propagating beauty standards: it is a classmate, a coworker, or a friend.

A few swipes on Snapchat can give decorate a selfie with a crown of flowers or puppy ears, lighten the skin, or add a sparkle to your eyes. A little adjusting on Facetune can smoothen out skin, and make teeth look whiter and eyes and lips bigger. A quick share on Instagram, and the likes and comments start rolling in. These filters and edits have become the norm, altering people’s perception of beauty worldwide.

Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), is a condition which involves “excessive preoccupation with a perceived flaw in appearance, classified on the obsessive-compulsive spectrum.” Snapchat dysphoria can be described as an offshoot of the same condition. “Those with a dysmorphic body image may seek out social media as a means of validating their attractiveness,” the study notes. With those with higher engagement on social media platforms more likely to have a higher level of body dissatisfaction, despite trying to “present a specific image of themselves or analyzing and commenting on other’s photos”.

Teens, who once focused on things like the size of their nose, for example, are now hypercritical of completely normal lines, blemishes, and imperfections masked by Snapchat filters.
