80-Year Old Orphan Finds Her 103-Year Old Mom

Eileen grew up in an orphanage, Kirwan House, in Dublin and had first started searching for her family when she was 19-years-of-age.  Last year, she was on the radio show Liveline with Joe Duffy to ask for help.

She told Duffy she was very sad that she had been on this planet for so long and still did not have so much as one relative.

She was approached by a genealogist to try and help her find her relatives.  Eileen eventually tracked down her family!  She, once again, contacted the show to let Duffy and his listening audience hear about her incredible journey.

Eileen said that she believes she is the oldest orphan in Ireland.  She was born in the Bethany Home and moved to Kirwan House when she was 2-years old.

She was given someone else’s birth certificate when she turned 16 and kept that identity for 60 years.  She didn’t know that her certificate and the family was not hers until she had a DNA run.

The Pain Of Not Knowing

When talking about her mum, she was shocked to discover that she was alive and all she wanted to do was meet her.  She knew absolutely nothing about her background or had absolutely no medical history.

She couldn’t believe that doctors were constantly asking her question after question why she didn’t know this or that?  She was very upset and at one point just said “Because I’m an orphan.  I know nothing, absolutely nothing”.

The 81-year-old woman is married to her husband Ronald and has 3 children but she always wanted to find her birth family.

She could not fully understand being so alone.  Many people would ask her why she would bother with this search.  She would simply respond that she didn’t know what they meant. She said if you put yourself in my shoes and know you are on your own.

The worst thing about being alone, many different things would set her off.  She’d think if she only had a brother or a sister and then realize that it’s something inside herself because she had no blood relatives.  Well, now she does!

She has finally spoken to her birth mother over the phone and is planning to meet her very soon.  She will have to wait a bit because she cannot fly over water until after her operation.

Her mother is now 103-years-old and will turn 104 shortly. It was difficult talking to her over the phone because she could not hear Eileen.

She is across the water from her mum but she has 2 cousins who have come to help her out since they found out that she found out who her natural mother is and where she lives.

She told everyone, she wanted to go to the highest mountain and scream at the top of her lungs “I am not an orphan anymore!

We all wish her the greatest success when she can finally meet up with her mum after all these many, many years.  May she find closure knowing she is no longer an orphan but like others, she has a family.

We hope they will both find great joy and realize they now have their own small family.  Hopefully, she will keep everyone posted on her incredible journey and share her joy!  Good Luck, Eileen!

Watch: Burning Tracks To Help Train Pass

The sparks are flying—literally!—in this eerily beautiful video footage of fires lit on the tracks of Chicago’s famed El train this week, meant to keep the trains running during the worst cold snap to hit the area in almost a generation.

The Arctic blast that struck Chicago on January 28th and 29th was described by the National Weather Service as “brutal, historic, and potentially life-threatening.” No kidding! We’ve heard reports that the temperatures dropped into double digits below zero—that it’s so cold, mere minutes of exposure to the air can cause frostbite to set in. That’s cold!

The footage in this video shows sections of burning railway on Chicago’s Union Pacific West Line on Monday, January 28th.

Why Are They Doing It?

Chicago’s Metra railway authority, charged with the task of keeping the trains running, and safe from pull-aparts (which can cause derailment and serious injury to passengers), no matter how unforgiving the weather might get, explained the track fires and the science behind them in an Instagram post on January 21st: .

“Pull-aparts are rail defects in which two rails separate at their connection. They occur in extreme cold when the metal shrinks and the rails literally pull apart from each other. How Metra forces make repairs is by warming the metal with fire until it expands and the two rails can be reconnected.”

By around 6:50pm local time on Tuesday the 29th, the National Weather Service in Chicago said that temperatures in Rockford, Illinois, fell below zero between 3pm and 4pm, and would most likely not rise above zero until Friday morning, at the earliest.

The temperature recorded at Chicago O’Hare Airport also reached sub-zero temperatures before 6pm, and the National Weather Service noted that the temps would stay that cold until Thursday, if not longer. The result?

This unexpectedly lovely video—all shades of blue, gray, and white, the calming tranquility of which is periodically broken by bright orange flames licking up from the train tracks.

It’s definitely hypnotizing, as fire usually is for us humans, and we’re sure that Chicago area commuters, making the long trek to work in the unforgiving cold, appreciated this little spark of visual and literal warmth to accompany them on their voyage.

It’s the little things in life, after all. Still, we’re pretty sure they’ll be even happier once the temperatures finally warm up enough that lighting the tracks on fire is no longer necessary.

Mushrooms Could Save The Bees

Scientist suspect that mushrooms could possibly restore the population of bees.

The average human being usually has issues when it comes to bees. Bees help pollination and this helps everyone, but alternatively, they sting people. Most of the time, a bee sting is not fatal, but it isn’t exactly a pleasant experience either.

Although most people see bees as a nuisance because of their poor temper and their ability to sting, everyone knows that bees are needed for survival. This is why it’s been unsettling to hear the reports of populations of bees dying in masses. How would we survive without bees?

There are a lot of solid theories and reasons for the death of these bees, but a single man has decided to take the responsibility of finding a way to save the bees. It may be hard to believe, but the answer to the survival of bees is found easily and freely in nature. The answer lies in mushrooms.

What Causes Bees To Die?

Companies are usually blamed for the death of bees because of the pesticides they use, but there are many other reasons for the death of these bees. TIME reported in an article in 2017 that the number of bees in over 700 species of American bees was falling.

What’s more is that this isn’t just restricted to bees alone. It affects butterflies too. Bees are at about a 37 percent species loss. 9 percent of bee and butterfly populations could actually become extinct.

Dennis vanEngeldorp, an entomology professor at the University of Maryland, says that bee colonies are dying off because of Varroa mites. Varroa mites spread certain viruses that are deadly to bees, to their colonies. This wipes them out quite fast. This is a shockingly natural reason for the death of the bees, but it is still very worrying. Luckily the cure is also created by nature.

The Cure Is In Mushrooms

Paul Stamets was the first man to discover the antiviral properties of a mushroom – specifically for insects. Paul Stamets retails mushrooms and has thus has spent a lot of time with them. He spoke to Tuscaloosa News about the morning he made the discovery. He saw some bees interacting with his mushrooms.

He could see the bees sipping the droplets coming out of the mycelium. He had previously thought that the bees were in search of sugar, but he’d had a hypothesis that it may be something else.

The first person to really appreciate Stamets’s work was Steve Sheppard, an entomology professor at Washington State University. He pursued Stamets’ mushroom theory. He ran tests on bees who had been exposed to the mites, giving half of them a mushroom additive.

The test subjects who were given the mushroom additives were cured of the mite-borne viruses, proving Stamets correct.

The Plan To Save The Bees

Stamets sees bees as civilization’s canary in the coal mine. If the bees are dying, we will soon follow suit. He asks what important thing that we will lose that will lead to a catastrophic failure. He believes the rivet to be losing the bees. Over a third of the food we eat is dependent on bees.

Bees have been dying since the first breakout of these mites in 1980. Several other scientists fear that the extinction of bees could also be the extinction of the human race. The goal is to have 3D-printed mushroom mycelia extract feeder on our shelves in 2019. This extract will likely be sold by subscription.

Of course, this is dependent on people stepping forward and taking action to save the bees, so only time can tell how this will go. Would you help save the bees by buying this product? That might be dependent on of a bee has ever stung you before.

Scientist suspect that mushrooms could possibly restore the population of bees.

The Most Preventable Injury-Related Deaths

There is a higher number of Americans becoming unknowingly overdose with drugs than death through a car accident or from a fall. This is based on a recent survey.

The abuse of opioid is currently on the rise in America. Its overdose is among the cause of easily preventable fatal injuries in America alone. According to the survey, it has never happened in the US until now.

Statistics and report that can be got from the NSC (National Safety Council) observed that information from the National Centre for Health Statistics states that the abuse of opioid is higher than vehicle accidents or falls.

Deadlier Than Car Accidents

In general, abuse of opioid represented over 43,036 fatalities in 2017 alone. This is an increase of over 5000 in 2016. Car accidents used to be the highest before now. With a figure of over 40,000 fatalities in 2016 and a slight drop to 40,231 in 2017.

The death ratio, as deduced by the NSC states that there is a ratio of 1:96 of every American death happening from the abuse of an opioid. This is against vehicle accident deaths that record a 1:103 ratio.

According to the NSC, the probability of an American losing his life is dependent on what they spend their time doing, the place they live, the place they drive and their occupation, etc.

NSC’s media person, Maureen Vogel, believes that the NSC statistics show a bleak image for its people.

“Americans are ignorant of the fact that the issues affecting opioid will not affect them, as they see it as being obscure. As such, it is nothing to be worried about for their loved ones or themselves.” Vogel’s mail to the CNN “But the information reflects the extent of the situation. It is not a secret that the abuse of opioid kills Americans every day. And these statistics reveal it clearly.”

The synthetic opioids are the type that are mostly abused. They are increasing faster than before. Tramadol, fentanyl, fentanyl analogues are examples of them. While heroin records the second biggest cause of deaths from opioid overdose. And its closest rival are Morphine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

“America’s opioid worries instigated the NSC’s bleak odds. And the issues with opioids degenerates the more we experience an increase in fentanyl.” According to the NSC’s press release.

Avoidable deaths ― Recorded deaths that are not based on murder or suicide increased by over 5percent in the last three years (2016 till now). They are second death causes to only cancer and heart disease in America.

Woman Turns 110-Year-Old Tree Into Library

Sharalee Armitage Howard is making news headlines for transforming what was once the headache of her neighborhood into something that will make a positive impact on the community.

A dead tree had become a problem in her neighborhood and she turned it into this cute little library for her neighbors-inspired by a nonprofit organization devoted to reading.

A Problem For The Community

The dead cottonwood tree was in the front yard of this artist and librarian from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and had been there for about 110 years! The tree was quite the problem as it was breaking down more and more every day.

According to Sharalee, the tree was dropping massive branches onto the street and sidewalk, even when the weather was not windy. The entire neighborhood was always worried that someone would get hurt and one day, a branch finally fell on her son’s car.

Instead of completely destroying the tree, she decided to do something else with it. She was given inspiration by a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to learning.

Little Free Library

A nonprofit called Little Free Library is an organization that is devoted to inspiring, in communities all around the world, a love for reading. They help people create mini-libraries for themselves and for members of their community to enjoy.

Also, they provide books to their supporters at discounted rates. With the idea of exchanging books, people can create mini-libraries open to everyone to borrow books from.

They could also leave their books there for other people to read. People have created over 75,000 mini-libraries in 88 different countries since the launch of the organization.

A Tree-mendous Idea

Sharalee to the decision to turn this tree into a little library for her own community, using resources given to her by Little Free Library. They carefully cut down most of the tree, leaving only the stump behind.

She, with the help of her family and other members of the community, carved the inside of the stump and topped it with a roof. They installed lights on both the inside and outside, a glass door, and shelves to put the books on.

The transformation of this old tree is absolutely remarkable. Sharalee says she still has a little bit of work to do on it, but so far, it looks amazing! The most important part is that she has created a library, and this will serve her community well. Well done to her!

Bucket List: 2 Best Snorkeling Hot Spots

For anyone who enjoys the act of snorkeling, your main problem is probably going to be finding good locations. While snorkeling is a very fun and widely practiced experience, it does rely upon having a quality location to do it.

This is why snorkeling is something you might not get the chance to do too often; you might simply not have the opportunity. If this sounds like the problem that you face, then we have two recommendations for you to check out: Jamaica, and the US Virgin Islands.

Jamaica For Snorkeling

If you are serious about enjoying the unique art of snorkeling, then you should probably look to take a trip to Jamaica as soon as you can. These kinds of experiences are best enjoyed if you head out towards Negril, Booby Cay. If you got to here, you will find a small island that was more or less made to be a snorkeling paradise.

Indeed, fans of Disney films like “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea” will immediately notice the similarities that exist here. This stunning location is known to locals as Gilligan’s Island, named after the birds that float around the location.

It’s one of the best places to come and visit for those who enjoy a spot of snorkeling away from the usual. If you are serious about making sure you can enjoy the underwater cave systems of the region, then this is the place to start.

You will find that you get to enjoy many little trips through caves where you will see amazing coral reefs combined with amazing fish of all styles and varieties floating all around you.

As far as enjoying snorkeling goes, a trip to Gilligan’s Island is absolutely up there for places to go and see.

U.S. Virgin Islands For Snorkeling

If you like to take your snorkeling extra serious, though, you want to make sure that you come to the US Virgin Islands. Few other parts of the sea can promise to give you such a rich helping of culture, and nowhere else could really offer you the same opportunity for relaxation and enjoyment. Specifically, though, we recommend that you come and check out the amazing Trunk Boy over at St. John.

The reasons why are immediately apparent when you arrive. It’s the smallest of the three islands, around 673ft in length, but it’s amazing. It’s got some incredible underwater snorkel trails for you to head along, and it often gives you the chance to see all of the various living organisms that live around this part of the sea.

If you are serious about making sure you can have some proper fun, though, make sure that you take a trip over to the St. Thomas island as well. It’s the largest of the three islands, and is far busier and teeming with life. Definitely worth your time, though, if you want to enjoy getting up-close and personal with one of the most stunning snorkeling sites known to man.

For anyone who enjoys the act of snorkeling, your main problem is probably going to be finding good locations. While snorkeling is a very fun and widely practiced experience, it does rely upon having a quality location to do it.

Best Health Related Tech Innovations of 2018

Gradually, the year is coming to an end, and the New Year’s Eve Ball would soon drop in Times Square. So, there’s no better time to look back at the highlights that made 2018 better. Here’s our top five inventions that made a world of difference in 2018.

A Smartwatch That Predicts Epileptic Seizures

Epileptic patients are unaware of what the next few seconds would bring. Would they have a seizure or not? The recent approval of a smartwatch by the FDA would bring a striking change for people living with the disorder. The design of the watch allows it to detect subtle changes in the body of its wearer, and to determine when a seizure is about to happen. The device places an automatic call to the wearer’s caregiver once it detects conditions that would lead to a seizure.

Genetically Modified Mosquitoes That Could End Malaria

Various scientists started researching ways to end malaria. And in 2018, they decided to achieve this by modifying the genetics of mosquitoes. With a potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives, this innovative step would have a lot of impact in the future. As a result of the impact that it is projected to have, it has gained a lot of financial support, including a 4.1 million dollar investment from the Gates Foundation.

US Hospitals Are Working Together To Fight High Drug Costs

The cost of prescription drugs has been on the rise for several years. And this has strongly affected people seeking for medical care as well as their families. This has been very disturbing, and as a result, some hospitals swung into action. In a bid to improve patient’s welfare, and slash the costs of prescription drugs, they formed Civica Rx – a drug company. Currently, up to one-third of US hospitals have gotten involved or indicated interest.

Healthcare Workers Upgrade A Tool That Fights World Malnutrition

Malnutrition can now be detected with the use of a simple armband. Due to the design of the equipment, children had to travel down to get treatment from a healthcare center upon diagnosis. 2018 birthed a new and improved armband, which came off the efforts of the International Rescue Committee. Now, children can get help around where they live. This innovation has a lot of potential. Results from the initial trials were good; they were able to reach out and help more children.

Better Data To Help Refugees

Before you proffer solutions to any problem, you need to have complete knowledge of what you’re dealing with. This also includes the world’s refugee crisis. In an effort to understand this problem, the United Nations Refugee Agency in conjunction with the World Ban Group formed a Joint Data Center on Forced Displacement in 2018. This step is aimed at obtaining data, and using it to get a better understanding of refugees, in order to provide them with improved support in their places of refuge.

3 Biggest Pop Culture Imaginary Stories And Rumors

People are bored. When people are bored, they tend to come up with weird and wonderful conspiracy theories, often about those that in the spotlight.

Some of them are eerily convincing (I personally believe Michael Jackson is chilling on a beach in Hawaii somewhere) while some are outright wacky. Here are the three best and funniest pop culture conspiracy theories that will have you scratching your head for the rest of the day.

Michael Jackson And His Sister Latoya Are The Same Person

While I am of the belief the King of pop is still alive, many have a wackier theory that Michael Jackson and his sister Latoya are one and the same (that picture of them together must just be some genius photo cropping)

Theorists seemed to ignore the fact that they have appeared together multiple times and that the two were born two years apart.

Lorde is older

This conspiracy even sparked a South Park episode, so you know it’s good… when Lorde emerged with her hit “Royals” in 2013, a group of people dedicated to the truth claimed she was way older than her said age of 17.

Luckily this rumor didn’t gain too much ground and was put to rest when The Hairpin requested a copy of her birth certificate. Lorde happily complied, and it was proved that Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O’Connor was indeed born on Nov. 7, 1996.

The Simpsons Predicted 9/11

It’s been a freaky phenomenon for years- the Simpsons creator somehow knows how to ‘predict things’ or so they say. In the shows ninth premier “The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson,” Lisa holds up an ad for a $9 trip to Manhattan that shows the “9” next to an image of the Twin Towers….apparently that translated as a 9/11 prediction somehow or another.

Coincidence or not you’ve got to admit its kind of freaky.

The episode was taken off after 9/11 occurred but has since been put back on rotation. It follows the Simpson family on a trip to Manhattan where their car was abandoned near the world trade center.

Deciding to get a tattoo is no small decision. After all, it is something that will most probably last a lifetime. Some people do not give a second thought to what they have inked, others plan ahead. Some famous football players tattoo lots of symbols, religious or otherwise, on their body to have lady luck on their side.

But then there are those people who truly turn their bodies into a canvas and have some seriously beautiful, breath-taking and interesting tattoos that will make you take a second and say ‘wow!’.
