Great News for Fans of The Simpsons

The Simpsons have been going strong for 30 years and are not going to be going anywhere soon.  The Fox TV show has been one of TV’s most iconic series and recently moved over to Disney +.  It was hoped that fans would head over to the channel and stream the show but their reaction has been less than enthusiastic.

So what’s the problem?

One of the main reasons for the popularity of The Simpsons was its ability to deal proactively with and even predict some key events in real life.  It is also well known for its clever jokes and visual humor.  The problem is that the show was not designed to be shown on the huge screens that we find on modern TV sets.

Until series 20 the show was produced to be viewed on older style screens at an aspect ration of 4:3.  In the 1990s, this was the standard TV screen size, but Disney+, when it streamed the show, used the 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio.

This might be sounding a bit technical but the upshot of it all was that many of the key visual gags got cropped out and fans were not best pleased, to say the least.  There was a furious backlash online and now Disney has responded positively to address the situation.

In a recent statement, Disney+ confirmed that they had changed the aspect ratio to achieve consistency in quality across all seasons.  However,  in early 2020 the company will return the first 20 seasons of the show to the original aspect ratio and give fans the choice as to how they wish to view the show.

Although the decision by Disney to change the aspect ratio is understandable this latest move is great for the fans who just want to see their favorite show as it was originally intended.  Disney made a good call when it took complaints seriously and went straight in to rectify the problem.

The Simpsons Are Not Disney’s Only Controversy

Alongside the drama surrounding The Simpsons, Disney has also come under fire for some of its marketing of other programs including The Mandalorian.  The series, part of the Star Wars canon has also received criticism.

The Disney team has also been criticized for refusing to include some of the older content like Song of the South, made in 1946, and some of its shorter animated films. There has also been some censorship of jokes in Toy Story 2 and the “Maclunkey” change to Star Wars: A New Hope has received widespread derision from fans.

It seems that Disney is fast becoming a monopoly when it comes to modern popular culture and while it could be argued that omitting potentially controversial movies like Song of the South is a good call, it does mean that Disney can now change just about anything in the offerings that it controls including Fox, Pixar, Star Wars, National Geographic and now Marvel.

It should be of some concern that control rests in the hands of just one company who will decide what we can see and what will no longer be available.

Meghan Markle Accused of Copying Vogue Cover From 2016 Book

Meghan Markle’s opportunity to guest-edit the September issue of Vogue U.K. has not quite gone the direction she probably hoped for. It didn’t take long after its release for fans to begin pointing out the striking similarities between the magazine’s cover and The Game Changers, a bestselling book by Australian authors Samantha Brett and Steph Adams.

According to the pair, while the resemblance between the cover of their book, which Meghan contributed to, and the cover of this magazine is “flattering,” it is also “disappointing.”

“It’s obviously very flattering, she must like our concept! I love Meghan and am a huge fan, but it is a little bit disappointing,” said Brett. The cover features different women who are thought to be “Forces for Change” in separate boxes.

“But any project that aims to support the empowerment of women, I am a great supporter of,” she continued. “Our book was for charity — so hopefully they too are giving the proceeds to a worthy cause.”

Whether or not the entire cover idea was Meghan’s idea is still unclear, but the idea to have a mirror as one of the images to inspire readers to be their own forces for change was her idea, says the Daily Mail. Meghan was also one of the 40 women to contribute to The Game Changers, Brett told Fox News.

In just a few weeks, the book was sold out, so in 2017, it was re-released with more women and a pink cover. Since then, it has become a bestseller.

“Someone We All Want To Look Up To”

Adams, a four-time author who published her first book three years ago, agreed with Brett in her hopes for the earnings to be contributed toward a worthy cause, but she also added that she could visualize Meghan having just as much success as they if she took on an endeavor like The Game Changers.

“The Duchess of Sussex is someone we all want to look up to, admire and respect,” said Adams. “We love that she has ideas for change that are positive and that she is addressing issues such as diversity and kindness. But wouldn’t it have been more powerful if she just created a book and interviewed women and gave the money to charity?”

On Australia’s “Sunrise” Tuesday morning, Brett said she initially “didn’t think anything of it.”

“And then someone sent me the press release and the wording was very similar,” Brett added. “She said ‘trailblazing change-makers who are fearless women,’ and on the back of my book, it says ‘trailblazers, game-changing, fearless women.’ And so I thought ‘wow, this is very similar.’”

It wasn’t until her phone was ringing off the hook that Brett realized how big of a deal the cover was.

“Suddenly, I had the world’s media calling me. And it made me realize she is extremely scrutinized,” said Brett. “This is such a small thing, it’s a small book in Aussie,” she joked. Of course, Brett was being just a bit humble about the success of her book.

Since The Game Changer, Brett and Adams have also released The Juggle in April 2019 which is about high-profile mothers who have successful careers in addition to a family.

President Trump to honor Jon Voight with National Medal of Arts

For the first time since Trump became president, the prestigious National Medal of Arts will be awarded. The White House announced four recipients of the medal as well as four recipients of the National Humanities Medal in a statement on Sunday night. Trump plans to distribute the awards on Thursday during a ceremony at the White House.

One of the recipients that have drawn the most attention is Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight. The 80-year-old has been involved in quite a few films in his time, but, in addition, he has been a staunch supporter of Trump since the beginning, calling him “the greatest president of the century” as well as the “greatest president since Abraham Lincoln,” who died in office in 1865.

In past administrations, the awarding of these honors has been an annual affair, but this will be the first time since Trump was inaugurated in January 2017. President Obama was the last to give arts or humanities medals in September 2016.

A Long Career of Complex Characters

Voight starred in Midnight Cowboy, a film from 1969 that won an Academy Award for best picture. His starring role in the film Coming Home in 1978 won him an Oscar award for the best actor. In addition, he has appeared in the Showtime series, Ray Donovan. Now, he will receive this medal “for his exceptional capacity as an actor to portray deeply complex characters.”

Alison Krauss, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, and The Musicians of the United States Military will also be receiving the National Medal of Arts while The Claremont Institute, Teresa Lozano Long, Patrick O’Connell, and James Patterson are the recipients of the National Humanities Medal.

Voight often reprimands the Democratic party for their opposition and even explained in full on Twitter why Trump is such a good president.

“This is not peace,” he wrote. “This is not love. This is hate among the radical left. No amount of book smart will show the given policy of what truth stands for. Truth is a powerful emotion. Love … is what we should be voting for.

“And I must say that we — the Republican Party — have voted for renewal, for a place of safety, a community where all can have peace. But this is war among the left. They have hate. It’s like a venom. No words of God, no words of love, but a radical emotion of hate.”

Both men were smartly dressed in gray suits, with the former US-President opting for a darker shade of gray.  Michelle sported black trousers teamed with a white blouse, while Amal chose a long floral dress.

They looked set for an evening out and it is likely that the two couples were en route to a dinner supporting The Clooney Foundation for Justice.  The charity was founded by the Clooneys in order to tackle worldwide human rights injustice.

Is Elsa Getting Married in Frozen 2?

For any parent, the joy/fury of listening to your kids singing songs from Disney classic Frozen has been a double-edged sword. It’s great that our kids have such awesome content to watch and to get inspired by, but you might find it hard to actually do the job that you intended – you know, raising them.

With them forever bursting into songs from the classic, you might find it hard to actually teach them about life and the wider world. Well, (some) parents will be happy to know that the sequel, Frozen 2, could be doing a bit of teaching to your kids about the modern world.

It could, for example, introduce your kids to the concept of same-sex marriage. Raising such a topic with your kids is often a bit of a challenge, so some parents might enjoy the rumor that Elsa might be getting a female bride. In an interview with the writer and co-director, Jennifer Lee, there was a rather interesting non-denial, non-confirmation answer given about the topic.

#GiveElsaAGirlfriend

Weirdly, the Twitter world was obsessed with the idea of Elsa having a female partner as far back as 2016. Can anyone else remember the #GiveElsaAGirlfriend hashtag that polluted social media for what felt like forever?

Personally, I’m not really too bothered the gender of a love interest of cartoon characters. However, it is definitely interesting that Disney – and other companies – appear to have a desire to make this more of a theme in their work.

When speaking to the Huffington Post about her next movie, A Wrinkle In Time, Lee said: “I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film—that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people,

“It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”

When pushed further on the idea of Elsa being of such a persuasion, Lee said: “For me … Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us,

“I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”

So, yeah, not exactly a confirmation or a denial. It is, though, going to be quite an interesting topic of debate as more information comes out about the movie. One thing that shouldn’t happen, though, is that this shouldn’t become the overarching plot of theme of the entire movie.

While it would be cool to see Elsa end up with a female partner – it feels very much fitting to the character – it seems a bit OTT to make it the primary plot device. Thankfully, that does not seem to be happening.

I look forward to the oppressed, furious heteronormative community absolutely losing their minds about this, too. I’m sure that a kid’s movie having an LGBT protagonist is going to really help this kind of individuals see things clearly. Really.

In fact, the only downside of this story is that could end up becoming the primary narrative about what is, remember, a kids movie. That would be tragic. The movie, though, is sure to be as magical as the first: female partner or not.

Field of Light Installation is Like the Super Bloom on Steroids

The Field of Light Installation by artist Bruce Munro is an immersive art piece comprising 50,000 shimmering lights. The sight of these lights is set against the backdrop of Uluru in the Australian Outback and spread over a vast desert landscape.

This pilgrimage-worthy sight is neither easy nor affordable to get to, so the news that the artist opened an exhibit in Paso Robles, California is exciting for all those passionate about his art designed to illuminate and accent natural beauty.

This newest installation is Munro’s largest one yet, covering a 15-acre hillside in California’s wine country, around four hours north of Los Angeles. The art project, entitled Field of Light at Sensorio, has taken several years to finish, but it is meant only to complement the landscape’s natural beauty, not to add to or take away from it.

“We want visitors to be completely immersed in the environment, inclusive of the stars above,” Munro said to Travel + Leisure. “Everything we’ve created here at Sensorio dips below an elevation of 830 feet, so visitors will feel like they’re being cradled in the valley.”

Field of fiber-optics

Munro designed the 58,800 stemmed spheres lit by fiber-optics and LED’s to glow in varying rainbow-colored hues, giving the effect of the super blooms that covered areas of California this past spring by day. At night, however, is when the sight is most stunning. The ground transforms into a galaxy of stars, unlike anything you’ve seen or imagined.

“The amount of light emitted is surprisingly minimal — about the same as what a couple of houses would give off if they were spread over a 12-acre valley,” Munro explained, “so there’s a balance between the stars on the ground and those in the sky.”

Munro’s hope is that his work creates perspective as well as community. He designed it so that visitors could walk meditatively through the valley, considering the play of the nights on the natural wonders surrounding it.

“I work in light, but it’s not about the light, it’s about emotions,” he said. “I feel that we’re in a moment of history when we have to start questioning our values and getting back to basics. I hope that, in a small way, my installation helps guide you toward the clear sky, literally and otherwise.”

Violent ‘Fortnite’ Made Me the World’s Meanest Mom and I’m Fine with It

If you know anything about the recent trending game “Fortnite Battle Royale,” you’d probably say I’m the meanest mom in the world for banning it in my house.

It’s amazing how popular the game has become. Over 200 million are registered as users, making it even more popular than porn. Some might say, “Wouldn’t you rather your son be playing a video game than watching porn?” But I think I’d prefer to go with neither!

I know all the pros of the game and have wrestled with them, too. It’s social; it’s a great way for sons to bond with dads; its only cartoon violence – etc.

But I have my reasons for not allowing my kid to play it, and here are seven of them.

Reasons Are:

The alarming weapons roster. I know the violence is bloodless, but those weapons are pretty real and pretty scary. From shotguns to semi-automatic sniper rifles to pistols and more, it certainly makes guns seem more like toys rather than a dangerous weapon – a fact that we are trying to instill in our son. Letting him play around with one like this certainly sends a confusing message.

It’s cartoon violence. And along those lines, I’d almost rather my kid being seeing the horrific results of violence they’ve inflicted rather than it seeming inconsequential and bloodless. If they can’t handle blood, guts, victims screaming, and heartbroken families, then they’re not ready to be playing around with this stuff either.

The do-or-die premise. If you aren’t already familiar with the game, one hundred wannabe-killers are dropped on an island, and the point is to be the last man standing. Research is still being done on how violent entertainment impacts kids, and the findings have been conflicting, but I seriously doubt letting your child regularly identify with a murdering machine is beneficial.

It’s costing me money. I remember the good old days when we’d cut grass and clean to earn pennies for the bike we were saving up to purchase. Now, money is being wasted on “Fortnite” extras. Epic Games has made over $2.4 billion from “Fortnite” — an otherwise free game — in 2018, according to Nielsen’s SuperData! Money from my wallet sure isn’t going towards this!

It’s interfering with school.  Twenty-seven percent of teens surveyed by Common Sense Media in 2018 reported playing “Fortnite” in class. It’s not helping them get somewhere in life, that’s for sure.

It’s killing IRL playdates. My son used to invite friends over to play outside or to build a fort – or even to play Wii. Now, playdates consist of hanging out online playing “Fortnite.” If that were occasional, it wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s shouldn’t replace in-person interaction.

It’s like kid crack. Much research has concluded that video games flood our brains with dopamine, a happy chemical that floods in when you do something like winning a poker game, eat chocolate, or shoot heroin. Games like “Fortnite” are intentionally designed to do this, delivering small rewards that cause your brain pleasure and make it come back for more – again and again, and again.

Honestly, there are times I feel badly for my son, especially when everyone else is doing it. All his friends talk about it just about 24/7, so am I his worst enemy? There’s still a lot I allow, like FIFA 19. How mean of a mom am I, really? I decided to ask a leading national expert in video game research.

“Older adults tend to freak out about any youth trend. The data do not support that there’s any epidemic of game addiction,” says Chris Ferguson, a psychology professor at Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. “You’re thinking about this and looking for data. That certainly doesn’t make you the worst mom ever. I’m sure your son doesn’t really think so either!”

Let’s hope he’s thanking me when he grows up!

If you know anything about the recent trending game “Fortnite Battle Royale,” you’d probably say I’m the meanest mom in the world for banning it in my house.

Observatory Transformed into R2-D2

The German professor Hubert Zitt currently teaches at Zweibrücken University of Applied Sciences but frequently travels internationally to lecture on the subjects of electrotechnology, Star Wars, and Star Trek. But recently he did more than just lecture about Star Wars.

The famous professor’s efforts to give the Zweibrück Observatory of the Natural Sciences an R2-D2 themed facelift put his name in the headlines when Mark Hamill – Luke Skywalker himself – tweeted about it.

Getting the Job Done

Professor Zitt didn’t do all the work on his own. He pulled, first, his father-in-law Horst Helle in to help paint the observatory, and then to ensure its perfection, Zitt also involved Klaus Ruffing, an expert painter. On top of these three skilled men, many of Zitt’s students eagerly joined in to get the job done.

A True Star Wars Expert

Dr. Zitt is a unique character as he is a well-studied, international professor that lectures not just in science, but also in Star Wars and Star Trek. He does so in such a way that even non-fans find the subject interesting since he leaves out all of the typical jargon only avid fans usually comprehend.

But Zitt isn’t just knowledgeable in these iconic movies; he’s hugely skilled in relating them to scientific knowledge, just as he did in a famous lecture about the physics in Star Trek.

Interest in Astronomy

Zitt got permission from the university to transform the observatory after he noticed that it was shaped very much like R2-D2, according to Euronews. Once he started painting it, the media coverage blew up, and as a result, more and more people are flooding in to visit the observatory.

What Dr. Zitt loves so much about this endeavor is that a simple paint job is getting everyday people more interested in astronomy. This is just one simple anecdote that encompasses Zitt’s entire teaching career – making complex subjects more palatable to the public.

Mark Zuckerberg Innovates New Sleeping Aid for Mothers

While Mark Zuckerberg might not be seen as the savior of humanity as he once was, the Facebook guru is still a hugely respected name in innovation. Known for Facebook primarily, he’s enjoyed a massive and stellar rise to the very top of the tech industry.

However, clearly still burning bright with ideas and innovations, Zuckerberg has been working on a very cool, very considerate product – a sleeping aid for mothers.

With two young kids at home, the Facebook supremo is someone who understands the value of caring for his kids. So, after seeing how exhausted everyone was at home, he decided to act. To do that, he came up with the aptly named Sleep Box. He gave it to his wife, Priscilla Chan, who immediately found it useful to get her to sleep at night.

Speaking about the invention, Zuckerberg was clear about why he made it:

“Being a mom is hard, and since we’ve had kids Priscilla has had a hard time sleeping through the night,”“She’ll wake up and check the time on her phone to see if the kids might wake up soon, but then knowing the time stresses her out and she can’t fall back asleep.”

It’s a confusing process, but it is part of being a parent. Therefore, this new invention might go some way to overcoming this problem and helping Chan get to sleep a whole lot easier than she is at the moment.

This simple but effective little tool works by putting on a dim light from 6-7AM. It might seem simple, but it does a lot for improving quality of sleep for the duo.

Smart but Simple

The light is good enough that it will wake one of us to get the kids without it being too early. However, it’s also dull enough that, if they wish to keep on sleeping, the light is not going to wake them up too early.

It’s a simple but smart little invention and one that a lot of parents would like having around the house. Now, waking up in the middle of the night is not going to feel like such a stressful experience.

Indeed, Zuckerberg himself noted that even he was impressed at just how well the product had done at improving sleeping quality, saying: “As an engineer, building a device to help my partner sleep better is one of the best ways I can think of to express my love and gratitude,

“A bunch of my friends have told me they’d want something like this, so I’m putting this out there in case another entrepreneur wants to run with this and build sleep boxes for more people!”

What a cool little product. Be sure to keep an eye out for this, as it is very much likely to be made by someone else who can see the potential in this small but simple little box. Who knew the genius behind Facebook would also be the genius behind saving mothers from restless nights!?

Why Does Queen Elizabeth Wear Gloves?

Over the many years that Queen Elizabeth has occupied the throne, there are a few things that stand out when it comes to her attire such as a bright colored coat, her matching hat, always a huge brooch, and lastly, her perfect gloves!  She has also been known to wear many different sunglasses in many different colors including blue, yellow, and fuchsia.

Back to the question about the gloves.  Actually, there is a really good reason, the queen must shake a lot of hands during the course of a day.  She is constantly exposed to germs so her gloves protect her!

Ever since her honeymoon in 1947, the glove manufacturer Cornelia James has kept the queen in a large supply of gloves.  Genevieve James, the current director, and daughter of Cornelia told Good Housekeeping, the gloves may serve a practical purpose but have also become her trademark over the years.

In 1947, the royal couturier Norman Hartnell, who designed the queen’s wedding dress, ordered a suitcase of James’ gloves.  James was well-known for his gloves coming in a multitude of colors as well as traditional shades which the queen loves.

Family Business

In 1979, manufacturer Cornelia James received her Royal Warrant as the official glove manufacturer to Queen Elizabeth.  After Cornelia’s death in 1999, her daughter took over the business.  It’s estimated that since that time, the company has made around 60 to 70 pairs of gloves for the queen.  Genevieve said that she can tell the difference between her creations and those of her mother’s.

Unlike your standard glove, the queen’s gloves are made from pure cotton with a suede-brushed finish. Another favored style of gloves uses a lighter Swiss jersey.  The gloves are from the Francesca or Regina collection and the length is customized for the sleeves to reach 5 inches from the base of her thumb to her arm.  This allows the gloves to reach beyond the cuff of her coat and keeps her wrists covered.
