The £7,500 Dress That Does Not Exist

I don’t know about you, but for me, $9,500 (£7,500) is quite a chunk of money, so spending it all on one single dress would be quite extraordinary. But Richard Ma, the chief executive of San Francisco-based security company Quantstamp, did something even more extraordinary.

Not only did he spend all of that money on one dress, but he spent it on a dress that doesn’t even exist in physical form. Yes, that’s right, he bought a digital dress for his wife.

The Fabricant designed the digital dress and rendered it onto an image of Richard’s wife, Mary Ren, so that she can use it on social media. What might sound bizarre to us now could be one of the biggest money-making schemes going forward.

“It’s definitely very expensive, but it’s also like an investment,” Mr. Ma says. Typically, neither he nor his wife spends much on clothes, so the reason he bought this piece is because he believes it has long-term value. “In 10 years’ time everybody will be ‘wearing’ digital fashion. It’s a unique memento. It’s a sign of the times.”

Mary hasn’t shared the photo anywhere public, but she has posted the image on her own Facebook page and showed others through WeChat.

Carlings, a Scandinavian company, is another fashion house that has taken up digital fashion design. Last October, they released their own digital streetwear collection which started around £9 ($11), and it sold out in just a month.

“It sounds kinda stupid to say we ‘sold out’, which is theoretically impossible when you work with a digital collection because you can create as many as you want,” explains Ronny Mikalsen, Carlings’ brand director.

“We had set a limit on the amount of products we were going to produce to make it a bit more special. You wouldn’t buy a white t-shirt digitally, right? Because it makes no sense showing it off. So it has to be something that you really either want to show off, or an item that you wouldn’t dare to buy physically, or you couldn’t afford to buy physically.”

When you’re designing only digitally, you have the freedom to be a bit more creative and extravagant.

Stunning Success

The Scandinavian company only created their digital line to promote their real products, but after its stunning success, the firm is preparing a second line of digital garments to be released at the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Fabricant puts out new, free digital clothes every month on their website, but in order to truly appreciate and combine the designs with their own pictures, consumers need specific skills and software. The Fabricant will also have to find another way to make money until the digital fashion market becomes more popular.

“We make our money by servicing fashion brands and retailers with their marketing needs, selling tools, and creating content that uses that aesthetic language of digital fashion,” says The Fabricant founder Kerry Murphy.

No one really knows who exactly is buying all the digital markets that Carlings has sold so far, or downloads from The Fabricant, but according to Mr. Mikalson, Carlings has sold 200-250 pieces.

A search on Instagram to find the pieces, however, only brings up four people who independently purchased with no involvement with the company. Of course, the digital clothes may have been shared privately.

According to Amber Jae Slooten, a co-founder and designer at The Fabricant, it’s mainly just industry professionals who use CLO 3D software who are downloading their clothes. “But it’s also just people are very curious to see what the files look like. People just want to own the thing, especially since that one dress sold for $9,500,” she says.

Where is this trend heading?

The long-term impact is yet to be seen of this “amazing phenomenon” of digital fashion, as Marshal Cohen, chief retail analyst at market research company NPD Group, calls it. “Do I believe it’s going to be something huge and stay forever? No.”

According to Cohen, it’s just for those who want the perfect image. “If you don’t like what you’re wearing, but you love where you are, you now have the ability to transition your wardrobe, and digitally enhance the photograph to make it look like you’re wearing the latest and greatest.”

The idea partly began with the popularity of games like Fortnite where players are willing to spend money on outfits or skins for their digital characters. “The only reason we made the collection the way we did – inspired from Fortnite – was because of the whole link between buying skins and buying digital clothing,” Mr. Mikalsen says.

“When it comes to technology and the way people are living their lives, we have to be aware of that the world is changing.”

Of course, designing skins and clothes for a game is a bit of a different challenge. All of it has to fit the character as well as the story. And designing it isn’t even the hardest part. After anywhere from one to 70 attempts at designing, you have to make sure the skin actually works in the game, when the character walks, fights, dances, etc.

“For a game like League of Legends, you have to do 3D, there’s sound effects, there’s animations, all of these things have to come together to make the character feel like they’re sort of expressing a different fantasy of themselves.

“It’s less like changing clothes and more like seeing an actor playing a different role.”

All in all, it was this growing popularity and success of games like these that gave the fashion industry the courage to give digital clothes a try.

“Digital fashion will become an important part of every fashion business’ future business model,” says head of the Fashion Innovation Agency at the London College of Fashion, Matthew Drinkwater.

“It’s not going to replace everything, but it will be an important part of that.”

I don’t know about you, but for me, $9,500 (£7,500) is quite a chunk of money, so spending it all on one single dress would be quite...

Queen Elizabeth II Has Finally Unloaded All Real Fur

Well, it seems Queen Elizabeth, Queen of England, has decided to drop using real fur and adopting faux fur in its place.

The Queen’s dressmaker has revealed that after 67-years of reigning, the Queen has dropped all real fur for fake fur.

She will be attending an engagement during cold weather in Britain as of right now, fake fur will be used to make sure she stays warm as reported by Angela Kelly author of her new book “The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, The Dresser, and the Wardrobe.”

Buckingham Palace has also confirmed the news.

Why Now?

Although it’s not clear what the reason behind her decision is, she has received criticism from many animal welfare groups for using real fur in the past.

Claire Bass, Executive Director of Human Society International told Insider that they are thrilled with Her Majesty officially going fur-free.  Queen Elizabeth’s decision to “Go Faux” is the perfect reflection of the British public as the majority of people detest real fur and want absolutely nothing to do with it.

The majority of people in the UK believe the Queen’s decision to go fur-free is a very powerful message that is, without a doubt, out of fashion and does not belong in Britain.  The UK banned fur farming almost 20 years ago because it’s considered cruel and also believes it’s time for them to wrap it up by banning the sale of real fur.

Bass also stated that she believes that the British government should follow suit of the Queen’s decision and make the United Kingdom should be the first country in the world to ban the sale of animal fur.”

It’s also worth mentioning, the no-fur ruling only applies to outfits worn by Her Majesty.  Therefore, the entire palace is not fur-free.

Animal welfare groups have been protesting the royal family’s wearing fur for many years now.  In 2006, activists from The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, known as PETA,  staged a naked protest outside Buckingham Palace trying to get the palace guards to give up wearing bearskin hats.

There are more and more people, worldwide, that are fighting back about killing animals for their fur.  Many international designers have moved away from fashion that incorporates real fur.  Animal advocates in the United States have also been very vocal about real fur.  Only time will tell so all we can do is wait and see if animals will get the much-needed recognition they deserve.

Well, it seems Queen Elizabeth, Queen of England, has decided to drop using real fur and adopting faux fur in its place.

Your Hairstylists & Colorists Want You to Know…

I’m sure you know the basics for your next salon appointment including being there on time, leaving a 20% tip, do not make annoying phone calls, etc.  What you might not know, what your stylists really wants you to do before, during, and after your appointment.

We spoke with a few professional stylists to find out their biggest pet peeves and offer some advice you should take advantage of.

Do Not Show Up With Filthy Hair:

Many professionals could not express strongly enough, there are clients who show up with hair that hasn’t been washed for at least a week and expect the stylist to do it for them.

What many clients do not seem to understand, having tons of chemicals and products building up on their hair makes it very difficult for a color to go on evenly.  You do not have to have perfectly clean hair just at a level that is passable.

A professional colorist from New York City, Raisa Cabrera, said you should never scrub your scalp just before having color applied because it can cause your skin to become overly sensitive to the dye.

One valuable hint – if you know your hair is really dirty and it grosses you out, wash your hair the night before your appointment because the chances are, your stylist is going to disgusted as well. Washing your hair the night before will please your stylist and you will get so much more out of your color.

Show Patience With Your Color:

Sheenon Olson, celebrity hairstylist and creative director of ATMA salon in Miami, said when you are getting ready for a major color change, be realistic what can be achieved in a single appointment.  You cannot show up with black hair and expect to walk out as a platinum blonde in one day.

You must be patient and take the needed steps, gradually, to protect your hair.  He recommends you ask your stylist what you can expect to achieve in one day.  If you know it’s going to take longer than the time you have set aside, reschedule when you have more time.

Be Upfront And Honest About Your Hair’s Color:

You must be honest with your colorist about your hair’s history. Was your hair a gloss, toner, Brazilian blowout, box color, etc.  This can make all the difference when treating your hair, according to Miguel Angarita, master colorist at Mizu salon in NYC.

He strongly suggests you talk with your stylist about the upkeep and your budget before getting in over your head.  There are certain colors and cuts that require more attention and trips to the salon for something that will look great when your hair grows out.

You Must Have an Open Mind:

Always come to your appointment with an open mind and take professional advice.  What you have in mind might not work with your skin color or the style won’t work for your type of hair.  Your stylist will work with your skin tone, the shape of your face, eye color, or other features.  You will get the best cut or color that is customized for you and you will look great.

Provide A Picture:

If you have a style in mind, bring a picture with you to show your stylist. Better yet, bring several examples from different angles and in different lighting. Also, be specific about what you want done.  Cutting dead ends or trim are two very different lengths.

Choose A Time For Your Appointment That Works:

Avoid taking the last appointment on a Saturday.  If you are a new client and want a major change to your hair or your hair needs a lot of work, you should book an appointment earlier in the day or, if possible, in the middle of the week.

If you can book in the middle of the week, it’s easier to get and your stylist will have more time to spend on your hair.  If you are not sure how long your appointment will take, call your stylist beforehand and get a consultation first so you can explain what you are looking for.  They will be able to block the proper amount of time you will need.

Take Good Care Of Your Color:

Choosing a high-quality color will make all the difference.  Some clients think a stylist is simply trying to sell a product to make money but that’s just not true.  You want products that will make your color last longer, allowing for a longer period of time before returning to the salon.

Products that are not designed for color-treated hair will strip the color out your strands, leaving your hair looking dull and lifeless.

You are a walking advertisement for a stylist’s or colorist’s work, so they want the very best for you.  Listen to them and take their professional advice.  You will look so much better in the long run.

I’m sure you know the basics for your next salon appointment including being there on time, leaving a 20% tip, do not make annoying phone...

Designer Says These $20 Million Shoes are The World’s Most Expensive

In the past, it was handbags. Your purse brand and its price defined you. The more expensive, the better. But slowly, bags have taken the backseat, and shoes have begun to take their place – or so says Business Insider’s, Mary Hanbury.

In fact, numbers show that consumers are spending more money on expensive shoes than luxury handbags – $794 on one pair on average, Hanbury wrote, citing a report by The NPD Group. The most classic of these status-symbol shoes is a pair of Christian Louboutins, which can range from anywhere in the high hundreds to the mid-thousands.

However, a pair of shoes debuted on a yacht in Dubai as a part of MIDE (Made in Italy, Designed in Emirates) Fashion Week earlier this October makes the cost of a pair of Louboutins look like pocket change.

Designed by the Italian Antonio Vietri, the “Moon Star Shoes” are now the world’s most expensive shoe, valuing around $19.9 million according to Sophi Prideaux of The National, an English-language UAE news site.

Made of Stars?

So, what makes these shoes so expensive? Not only is the heel solid gold, but it also consists of 30 carats of diamonds and a bit of Argentinian meteorite circa 1576 – all combined to make a record-breaking shoe.

According to Forbes Italia, the shoes are meant to be a tribute to Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. Vietri is also known for designing the “world’s first 24k gold shoes” in 2017, reported Harper’s Bazaar Arabia. And, of course, they were delivered to buyers via helicopter.

“The most expensive shoes in the world are mine. And the record came to [the] city of Turin. I love my city,” the designer wrote on Instagram on October 14.

It’s undeniable that Vietri has taken the luxury market of shoes to a whole new level. What will he do next?

Still no news on how comfortable the shoes are as of yet.

Once Again Meghan Markle Speaks Up For Ethical, Sustainable Fashion

Meghan Markle has hit the news again championing her fashion choice with the STAUD sustainable fashion during her African tour. The royal family has always been in the limelight so she has stepped up with her choice in clothing that’s dear to her heart.  Sarah Staudinger, the co-founder of STAUD, was so honored that Meghan chose to wear one of her designs, a recycled nylon dress.

During her visit to the Auwal Mosque with Prince Harry, she wore an olive green shirt dress with a cream-coloured headscarf and flats.  Not only was the look very chic but was made entirely from recycled nylon, showing her need to speak up for an eco-friendly lifestyle.

The designer told the press that the response to Meghan’s choice in clothing has been incredible and has given her great exposure to a much larger audience.  This dress can be pre-ordered for $325.

Zero-Waste Fashion

From the beginning of the tour, her sustainable theme in clothing was apparent with her black and white print dress from Mayamiko.  Mayamiko is an ethical, zero-waste fashion line that uses reclaimed, re-cycled materials along with locally sourced fabrics from Malawi.

Mayamiko has stepped up and trained disadvantaged women in their workshop and many of these women suffer from the HIV pandemic.  Their line of clothing is produced in limited supplies and therefore Meghan’s Dalitso Dress was sold out almost immediately.

Meghan has also worn outfits she has re-cycled from her own closet, such as her blue Veronica Beard shirt dress and her striped Martin Grant maxi dress which she wore on her last tour.

This is not the first time the Duchess has chosen clothes from her closet, she also revamped a black jumpsuit from her Everlane collection which she wore in a video for British Vogue last September. This video was called Forces For Change which she played a large role in editing.

She has become a positive role model for women everywhere with her views about eco-friendly fashion.  Zofia Day, Los Angeles-based and founder of Lisette Polyn Jewelry, said Meghan chose her pave diamond and gold bracelet to accessorize her Everlane jumpsuit.

She went on to say that Meghan is showing women that it’s beautiful to be conscious of our environment and you can make choices that make a difference.

This project has been a passion of Meghan’s since she and Harry announced their engagement.  As a matter of fact, during one of her first royal walking tours, she wore a sustainable Welsh denim brand from Hiut Denim Co which creates organic sustainable jeans and employs from their own community.

The Duchess also dons ethical and socially conscious lines like Gabriela Hirst, Maggie Marilyn, Reformation, and Outland Denim. She chose Stella McCartney to design her evening wedding reception dress.  Stella is considered an early pioneer of ethical fashion.

Many women have watched Meghan emerge as someone passionate about our environment and feel a need to make a strong statement to other women that it is chic and fashionable to wear clothes from recycled materials.  Not only does she always look amazing, but she will not be a hypocrite when it comes to how she addresses concerns for our planet.

Each one of us should take a little time and go through our closets and see what we can bring back into the light of day.  How many of us have clothes we have worn once and then just locked up in our closets never to be worn again?  Maybe it’s time to reconsider!

Ivanka Trump Rocks Mom’s Cocktail Dress

Ivanka Trump seems to have reached into her Mom’s closet for a recent wedding weekend in Rome. Ivanka wore a glam Bob Mackie cocktail dress her mother donned 28 years ago.

For her visit to the Italian Capital for the wedding ceremony of fashion designer Misha Nonoo and oil heir Michael Hess, Ivanka wore a shiny white, gold and black cocktail dress on the second night of the lavish affair.

The 37-year-old first daughter and White House Adviser sported a swept-back updo, red lipstick and gold strappy heels as accessories in a photo shared to her Instagram story.

The Bob Mackie dress was first worn by Ivana Trump in 1991. Since then, her daughter has borrowed the fringed outfit twice. The first time being a fashion designer Joseph Altuzarra’s wedding in 2014.

Learn How to Sell Your Used Clothes Online or Host a Clothing Swap

While you are purchasing in quality garments, you might want to consider buying cheaper fashions by shopping secondhand or offer clothing you no longer want and make money by selling them! If you get in the practice of taking care of your clothes, you can pass them on to other people who will fall in love with them.

Here’s some advice for hosting a successful clothing swap:

Selling:

If you have high-quality clothes, you might want to sell them or get on sites that are now set up for people to sell clothing they no longer want such as Buffalo Exchange or Square Space just to name two.

Swapping:

Invite a crew, create a playlist, provide snacks, and get ready to clean out your closet. Presenting a clothing swap is one of the best ways to get rid of clothing you are not going to ever wear again. You will help stop the avalanche of clothing ending up in landfills, harming the environment.

According to the McKinsey Report, consumers have purchased over 60% more clothes in 2014 than in 2000. Over the past 20 years, the fashion industry has produced far too many clothes that are cheaper but consumers will only wear for a brief period of time before tossing them out. These clothes are the fastest growing items of waste that are filling up our landfills.

Keep Your Standards High –

You want people to buy items they’d be happy to give as gifts to friends and family. Make sure your clothes are not stained or ripped. Check over your clothes before offering them for sale or swapping.

Organize Your Clothes –

Organize your clothing in categories such as tops, pants, dresses, size, and shoes. This would only work if you have enough items to do so, otherwise, it could be overkill.

Create An Appealing Display –

Provide racks or tables so potential buyers or swappers can go through the items easily. If limited, you can also use the floor or your sofa.

Plan For Consumers Wanting To Try Items On –

Make sure they have a place to try items on such as a bedroom or bathroom as a changing room. Have a full-length mirror for them to view the outfit.

Have A Give-Back Plan –

If friends have contributed to the clothing swap, be prepared to give them back. Any items that are left behind, find organizations that will take in donations.

New Probiotic Suit Fights Body Odor

A bio-engineered bodysuit could handle unpleasant body-odor with micro-organisms woven into its fibers.

Named “Skin II,” the leotard-like piece of clothing incorporats live, healthy probiotic bacteria that, when activated by perspiration, can diminish personal odors, help skin cells regenerate and improve our immune system.

“It’s not the sweat on your body that causes body odor, it’s the bacteria,” designer Rosie Broadhead told Reuters in an interview. “So we’ve incorporated healthy bacteria into the textiles to enable a healthy microbiome which will help to reduce your body odor,”

With her probiotic fabric, Broadhead hopes to revolutionize the interaction between fabric and skin. Other than its health (and social life!) aspects, she’s also keen on the environmental impact of her invention:

“My project offers an alternative to chemicals such as antibacterial finishes on clothing and cosmetics,” Broadhead says, “Due to the deodorizing effect the probiotics have on the body, it may reduce the amount of time you need to wash your clothes.”

Our modern life fixation on cleanliness makes it hard for “good” micro-organisms to survive, so Skin II is a big opportunity for sustainable fashion.

Probiotics are living micro-organisms that are beneficial to our bodies when in sufficient amounts. Probiotics are found naturally in some foods, like yogurt, and, surprisingly, pickles, but you can also take them as dietary supplements.

Broadhead collaborated with Belgian microbiologist Chris Callewaert of Ghent University to develop the fabric. Callewaert has done extensive research on the causes of body odor, and he provided her with probiotic bacteria. This bacteria are found on our skin and are different from the digestive system bacteria we all know from food products.

“A lot of focus is on the fashion industry’s unsustainable practices concerning waste and environmental impact,” says Broadhead, “However, much less is known about the use of chemical finishes on our clothing that can impact our bodies.”

She wanted to create clothing that was good for the skin, but has a minimal impact on the environment, “which meant using technology that had a deodorizing effect. By working with probiotics that are common on our skin I have developed ways to add function and performance to our clothing in a natural way.”

Broadhead and Callewaert plan to market Skin II with a full sportswear line, and in this heat – we just can’t wait for it to hit the shelves :-)

Instagram Account Devoted to Spotting ‘The Dress’

If you’re headed to Zara any time to get a new dress any time soon, you may want to read this article first to make sure you’re not buying the same exact dress that it seems women all over the world have been drawn to.

It’s relatively well-known that Zara has fashion-forward designs that are, at the same time, affordable; as a result, it has become quite popular among young shoppers, but one particular design seems to be a favorite. In fact, it’s become viral in Britain! People know it so well that it’s referred to as just “the dress” and has an entire Instagram account dedicated to sightings of it.

To give Zara credit, the dress is extremely appealing – I’m tempted to go pick one up myself! The website describes it as a “flowing, round neck dress with sleeves falling below the elbow. Featuring a ruffled hem and a buttoned opening in the back” and is selling it for $69.90 in sizes XS to XXL, according to The New York Times.

The Dress gets Social

The Instagram account, run by stylist Faye Oakenfull, is called “Hot 4 The Spot.” Oakenfull told The New York Times, “‘The Dress’ and I originally met on a set back in Easter when both the art director and makeup artist came in wearing it.

I posted it on my Instagram story as an ‘awkward fashion moment’ […] It then started to escalate, with many people sending me their own sightings. After a few weeks it seemed to be so popular on my stories that I decided to start a new account to keep on top of the content.” The account bio describes it as “A safe Space for *the dress*.”

Oakenfull has even come up with the typical person you’d see around the UK wearing the dress:

“I can be pretty certain where she’ll be hanging out at weekends,” Oakenfull told The Times. “She loves a bottomless brunch, food markets, day festivals, tennis, baby showers (sometimes hers), hen dos, polo, work parties, weddings, rooftop bars, and poolside prosecco. Most of all, she just really loves food shopping in [the British retailer] Marks & Spencer.”

With over 5,000 followers, the account regularly posts not only photos of people in the dress all over the world, but also memes about people’s love for the dress. There has been some opposition to the account, however, reports The New York Times.

Some of the posts are pictures people have taken of themselves, but many are candid shots taken without people’s knowledge, though the posts don’t include their faces.

“Let women wear the same dress or coat as everyone else. Let them meet their friends or go to the supermarket without fearing that they’ll end up the butt someone else’s joke online,” Sophie Benson wrote for Metro.

The account presses on despite some criticism, and its growing number of followers don’t seem to resent it. In fact, it’s not the only account of its kind. An account wholly devoted to leopard midi skirts has also begun as a result of their popularity in the U.S., especially in New York City.

If you’re headed to Zara any time to get a new dress any time soon, you may want to read this article first to make sure you’re not buying the same exact dress that it seems women all over the world have been drawn to.

How to Dry Clean at Home

In today’s age, everyone is wearing workout clothing in other places such as at the workplace or for a casual occasion.  Most workout clothes are made from materials that can be easily thrown in the washer and that’s it.

That said, we all have other clothes such as cashmere sweaters or silk pants with labels that clearly say “dry clean only”.  You know you cannot throw them in your washer without damaging them, so you pack them up and head off to your dry cleaner and spend a good chunk of change to get them cleaned.

After speaking with people in the know, we discovered you do not have to run off to your dry cleaner!  There are dry clean only items that can actually be had washed!

What you don’t know, that label that reads “dry clean only” is actually a way for the manufacturers to not be held accountable if the instructions are not followed to the “T”.  The sole purpose for these labels allows the manufacturers to place the blame on the dry cleaners if an item is damaged.

The DIY DryClean Experiment

Well, back in 2014, an experiment was conducted by taking a series of items with labels for dry cleaning, washed them, and then recorded the results.  It seems cashmere, silk, and polyester did really well but tailored suits or decorative detailed tops did not do well.

Note – these items were not thrown into a washing machine with other items such as sportswear or socks.  They were washed by hand but before deciding to hand wash these items, you should perform a spot test first.

If you are a little trepidatious, test these items in an area that is inconspicuous to the eye and find out how the material reacts to water.  If you find the color is bleeding, the area you tested is shrinking or there’s puckering, you should take it to the dry cleaner.

Keep in mind, there are materials that should never be washed such as leather, suede, rayon, and polyamide fabrics unless the label clearly states the item can be washed.

Also, if you prefer to take these items to the dry cleaner but have no plans of going there every week, you can purchase a fabric freshener, like Fabreze, to keep the item fresh for a longer period of time.

In many cases items that require dry cleaning are usually more expensive to buy so it’s very understandable why you might prefer not to run the risk of washing these items and cause damage On the other hand, if you are willing to give it a shot, there are several really excellent products for hand-washing such as Woolite.

In today’s age, everyone is wearing workout clothing in other places such as at the workplace or for a casual occasion.  Most workout clothes are made from materials that can be easily thrown in the washer and that’s it.

That said, we all have...

‘Mushroom Blond’ Hair Is Summer’s Biggest New Trend

The trend of using food to describe our hair colors has grown. Not only do we have toasted coconut, peach cobbler, and cold brew, but the latest trend is having mushroom blond hair. According to Pinterest, this last shade is quickly overtaking the others with searches on the site up by a whopping 308 percent.

Mushrooms may sound a bit bland and boring at first, but from the looks of it, it’s the exact opposite.

Mushrooms colors are soooo interesting!

If you’ve ever studied a mushroom, you’d notice that its colors are multifaceted. You’ll find multiple shades of dark and light brown, even blonde, and the hair color truly reflects those ashy shades you’d find in a mushroom. It’s an in-between color – not quite blonde but not quite brown.

“It’s right in between light brown and dark blond, like an ashier version of brond,” says Stephani Brown, master colorist at New York City’s IGK Salon Soho. As a result, the shade is a great choice for those not wanting a drastically lighter or darker color, yet it gives an edgy, unique look.

“I love the idea of using mushrooms to describe the tone of the hair color,” says Joel Warren, celebrity colorist and founder of the Salon Project. “They have so many different tones of beige and gray that are hard to describe. These tones evolved from the gray and silver trend to a slightly more natural look. The combinations with highlights and low lights gives a beautiful modern look.”

Typically, people want to choose a warmer shade for the summer, but that’s all the reason not to. What better way to stand out than to try something different from the regular? In addition, mushroom blonde is extremely low-maintenance according to Brown.

It’s a more grown-out look which needs a touch up only every three to six months or even up to a full year depending on your hair length. Another reason it’s a great choice for a fun, easy-going hair color this summer!

If you’re considering trying out mushroom blonde for yourself, Brown recommends that you ask your colorist for a subtle light brown or dark blonde ombre that has a variation of both light brown and dark blond pieces.

Be sure to mention the word ashy to keep it from going towards a more traditional blond look. It’s always helpful to bring some photos to give an idea of what exactly you’re going for and to help ensure the product is to your liking.

Ideas For Easy Makeovers For Your Home

Redesigning your living areas can be quite a time consuming and often overwhelming. Have you ever sat down and just stared at an area you want to upgrade but have not found the motivation to get to work?

We have found the best way to deal with your anxiety and lack of motivation is to start with something small.  If you have a large project for a living area, break it up into small “to-do” jobs, you will be amazed how quickly the entire project will move along and each small makeover will give you a lot of satisfaction.

First off, taking a large project and breaking it into smaller jobs will be a great deal more manageable and you will become even more motivated to move on to the next one.  Here are some really great ideas for upgrades that shouldn’t take longer than an afternoon but will deliver excellent results:

A Small Wallpapering Project:

Consider wallpapering just a certain area of your room vs trying to wallpaper the entire area. Consider adding a really nice print to an access wall or maybe the back of a display case. The idea is to create something that will visually draw someone’s attention.

Choose a pattern or color for your wallpaper that will compliment the rest of your room.  One thought might be choosing a wallpaper that has a simple interesting design.  Find something that will work with your décor but not become overbearing.

Using wallpaper on a piece of furniture such as a bookcase or display case that has very plain lines, can spruce it up.  This is a very easy project that you can finish in just a few hours at tops.

Dress Your Furniture Up With New Hardware:

Sometimes, the simplest project can actually have a huge effect.  Why not replace your old handles on your dresser with new, intricate brass or a nice floral design on knobs?  Try a whimsical design for your nightstand such as leather pulls or in a child’s room – animal faces printed on knobs!

If you are redoing your kitchen, there are so many wonderful kitchen themes to choose from for your cabinets.  Handles shaped like tomatoes or lettuce or apples and pears, the sky’s the limit! Maybe your cabinets came out of the fifties and you want them to be retro and modern.  You do not have to go crazy just shop around for modern, sleek designs for the hardware.

Add Some Interesting Artwork To Your Walls:

Artwork has a habit of bringing new life to a room while covering up scratches or imperfections in your painted walls.  You can shop around for artwork or get a little creative and pull out all those wonderful pictures you stowed away and frame them!

Another idea, get a large frame and make a collage of your favorite pictures.  Have a nice simple material for the background, add simple frames to each image and then place them in the large frame.  This small project will not take much time but will give your room a whole new look!

Another idea, have someone make a box with sectionals and place small antiques such as wooden soldiers in each section.

Add Shelving To Display Your Collectibles:

If you are a collector of small teacups, why not have shelves installed on your walls to show them off instead of hiding them somewhere to collect dust.  Really simple floating shelves do not require a lot of work and are quite easy to hang.

The one tool you will need is a stud finder to decide where to hang your collectibles.  Also, depending on their weight, make sure you have the right hardware that will be strong enough to hold the objects.  If you need some advice, talk to someone at your home improvement store.

Add The Magical Touch Of Lighting:

I’m not sure there is anything that adds a more impressive look than new lighting fixtures. Add a new chandelier or wall sconces. Trade out your tired old fifties chandelier with something really modern, sleek, and retro!

You would be amazed by how modern your space will become.  Unless you know how to rewire, it is strongly suggested you bring in a professional who can get the new wiring done in a very short period of time.  If you have an overhead ceiling light, why not trade it in for a really nice fan with lights that matches your décor and colors.

You can have your electrician add a dimmer switch to boot!

Give Your Plants Something To Rejoice In:

Too often, we buy plants and just place them in a corner in the same old pots they came in.  Over time, this is not healthy for the plants due to a lack of needed nutrients and the roots will start outgrowing their space.

Think about placing them in beautiful new planters that accentuate your room and will make your plants very happy! You can choose from ceramic planters, terracotta, or other interesting materials.  If you want to go with colorful planters, pick an accent color that is already a part of your room.
