Darwinism 2018: Panama Monkeys Are In Their Stone Age

The discovery was made on the Jicarón Island. The group of white-faced capuchin monkeys was observed to have started using stones to get food such as breaking nuts and shellfish. This is the Stone Age path human beings took before we advanced. From the reports, these groups of monkeys are the fourth primates that have been noticed to exhibit this behavior after humans.

The Jicarón Island is a small piece of land off the Panama coast. It is part of the Coiba National Park which is a popular tourist attraction in the country. The capuchin white-faced monkeys inhabit different parts of the National Park. But only a small group on the Island have been noticed to exhibit this smart behavior.

The scientists behind this discovery are in shock at the behavior. They were observed to regard the stones as tools which were used to get their food. There have been so many documented videos captured on cameras placed discretely in the areas where the monkeys inhabit.

From the videos, the monkeys were reported to be seen breaking snails, coconuts, and crabs for food. While there have been movements between the groups of monkeys spread across the park, it has also been noticed that this behavior has not been adopted by other monkeys.

From all indications, the movement into the Stone Age will be beneficial to this set of primates. By learning how to gain access to food, they stand a better chance of survival even when food becomes scarce. The necessity can encourage the discovery of more tools by the monkeys.

A team of scientists has devoted their time to study these monkeys and hopefully observe the advancement of their species as the may express more intelligent behavior.

Other primates that have been found to exhibit this behavior are the macaques which are found in Thailand and the chimpanzees found in many parts of West Africa. These animals have been the subject of study for many years, and the scientists are happy to add one more class of primates to their list of study samples.
