Famous Icons In Their Most Groovy Moments

There was once a time when celebrities weren’t just celebrities, but normal people too. Walking down Hollywood Blvd. was exciting not just because of its fame but because you were sure to spot a big star, most likely doing an everyday thing you could find yourself doing. Movie stars were unapproachable yet relatable.

Now, this is just a whisper of the past on which we look back with nostalgia, but with these pictures, we can fondly look back with a little more clarity.

Blonde bombshell

This rare picture of Monroe gives us a small glimpse into the real Marylin. Sultry, sexy, yet innocent, she became the most popular sex symbol of the 1950’s. The reasons why are obvious from looking at this picture. and acted like an emblem for the era’s attitude towards sexuality. Looking at this exquisite rarely seen photo, it’s no wonder why,

But as she became the emblem for the era’s attitude towards sexuality, turmoil began to build up underneath those seductive eyes and blonde curls, causing her to suffer internally from substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. The media’s constant attention only made this struggle worse.

Two Legends, One Kitchen

Pictured here is two timeless musical legends standing side-by-side, washing dishes, perhaps from a morning’s breakfast! Naturally, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson struck up a dee friendship through their collaboration on the song “The Girl Is Mine.”

Sadly, however, their friendship did not last. Fame and money came between them when Jackson outbid McCartney to the rights of the Beatles songs and bought a 50 percent stake. “I think it’s dodgy to do something like that,” McCartney once said of the buyout. “To be someone’s friend and then, buy the rug they’re standing on.” Indeed, Jackson’s move was a bit unfriendly, to say the least.

Marilyn Pumping Iron

Marilyn Monroe will ever be America’s iconic blonde bombshell, and one of the ways she created that image was to daily hit the weights! Many don’t realize it with her voluptuous figure, but here’s proof of how she toned up.

Muhammad Ali Beats The Beatles

Though both crucial icons of the 1960s, who the Beatles and Muhammad Ali were and what they stood for were drastically different. One, the “British invasion” of pop music to America; the other, a bold champion boxer.

At one of the most turbulent times in history, Muhammad Ali was known to freely blurt out his political beliefs. But the couple seemed to have gotten along just fine, as this photo seems to communicate.

Amy Winehouse back in the day

Here we have a photo capturing an innocent young girl visiting Paris in 1990. The infamous Amy Winehouse is hard to recognize without her big hair and accentuated makeup!

Taken before the fame and fortune kicked in, this photo holds some tragedy as we look back on a healthy, sweet girl and think of what addiction and eating disorders did to her later on in life. As we well know, she passed away at the ripe age of 27, as a result of these issues, but she will always be remembered affectionately for her distinguishing soul voice and brilliant hits.

Dreamy Meryl Streep

I doubt this bright young woman knew at the time of this picture that she would go on to be nominated for a record 21 Academy Awards, winning three, and nominated for 31 Golden Globes, winning eight – more nominations and wins than any other performer. Meryl Streep is caught here, in 1981, riding the underground, just like any other New Yorker. What a sight to behold. A young and fresh-faced Meryl Streep riding the underground in 1981.

Often labeled “the best actress of our generation,” Meryl’s beauty and talent has only increased since this picture.

Baby Brad

Wow. This picture would make any girl’s heart beat a little faster. We’re reminded why Brad Pitt was once one of Hollywood’s most eligible bachelors. The smile of this golden boy is simply heart-melting. has shown Hollywood longevity like no other. The actor and producer has received multiple nominations and is known to be one of Hollywood’s golden boys who can melt your heart with his sexy smirk.

Despite the controversy between him and his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, Brad has shown almost incomparable Hollywood longevity. Looking at him in his prime makes us almost entirely forget the headlines filled with allegations against him for not paying child support.

Princess Di

Princess Diana was one-of-kind; not a princess, before or after, has been anything like her. She easily captured the hearts of the people in her country and others, as well. For example, here she stands in line at Disneyland with her son, Harry, just like any average person would – looking casual yet chic.

British Royalty

This priceless and somewhat humorous photo pictures two types of royalty – British and pop culture. Back in 1997, Prince Harry and his father met with the Spice Girls.

Before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle married, many wondered if the Spice Girls would be the performance at the royal wedding, bringing this photo full circle. Though this never came to pass, Posh and Becks were guests at the wedding!

Young Lovers

What a power couple these two would have made had Robert Downey Jr.’s substance abuse not caused them to split. He and Sarah Jessica Parker, beautiful and famous, dated from 1984 to 1991.

Later on, in 2014, Robert visited his famous ex in order to attempt to make right some of the wrongs he had done her. On seeing the Sex and the City star and enjoying an amiable meeting, Downey Jr. stated: “She's so great and so cool and so funny and so in command. I got to meet her kids and I saw the way she and Matthew live, and I respect both of them so much.”

Performing Master

From five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards – winning two awards for Outstanding Contribution to Music and the first Brits Icon in 2013 for his "lasting impact on British culture" –, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, a Disney Legends award, the Kennedy Center Honours in 2004, and on and on, it’s obvious how Sir Elton John got knighted by the queen.

Elton John is one of those artists who has received more music awards that you can count. English pianist, singer, and composer had performances like none other.

Darling Heath

Similar to the earlier picture of Winehouse, this photo of the young Heath Ledger pierces your heart. Another gorgeous Hollywood man, Ledger had so much ahead of him in his career when his life came to a fateful end.

The actor long battled depression, and ended up taking his own life at the age of 27. Many believe Ledger’s preparation – locking himself in an isolated hotel room for weeks – for his role as the Joker in the Batman series pushed him over the edge, once and for all.

Freddie Mercury in action

The eccentric music and lyrics of “Bohemian Rhapsody” will continue to go down in history, but this song is just one of the works that made Freddie Mercury famous. Revered far and wide, the British singer never ceased to have a flamboyant stage persona.

In this particular show in 1980, Mercury had just ridden in on a dirt bike. We can only imagine – and long to have experienced firsthand – what this Queen’s concert was like.

A Waltz to Remember

The elegance and glamor of this picture is palpable. The Grease and Saturday Night Fever star, John Travolta, receives the honor of twirling the late Princess Diana around the floor at President Ronald Reagan’s event back in 1985!

Princess Diana certainly seems unphased by Travolta’s renown as a good dancer on the screen as she gracefully whirls around.

James Dean, Yes Please

James Dean stares pensively out the window with his cat, Marcus, who was gifted to him by his co-star in the film Giant, Elisabeth Taylor. One of the most gorgeous men to ever be in Hollywood, this heartthrob was an icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement, especially through his film Rebel Without a Cause.

Sadly, this star died too early. A few days before he died 1955, he made sure Marcus had a home, asking his friend to take care of his “loved one.”

Jayne Mansfield’s Publicity Stunt

Sophia Loren’s expression in this picture says it all. Had they been your everyday housewife, these two women could have easily been friends, but the fact that there weren’t many opportunities for women in Hollywood at this time made them constant rivals. Jayne Mansfield and Sophia Loren were contrasting beauties – Jayne, the blonde bombshell, and Sophia, the smoldering brunette. were both gorgeous women who often had to compete for the same roles at a time in Hollywood when there weren’t many opportunities for women.

Often having to compete for the same role, the animosity between these two gorgeous women is obvious, and Sophia’s face screams disgust disapproval.

Disney Cuties

Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling used to be tight back in the day when they acted as Mousketeers in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Their friendship deepened even further when Timberlake’s mom adopted Gosling for a brief time while Gosling’s mom returned to Canada for work.

Something seems to have torn them apart, however, as not only are they not friends more, but also, they seem to leave information out when asked if they are still in touch, even avoiding each other on the red carpets. Clearly, some tension resides between these two whites, 30’something, non-offensive stars that were once brothers.

Another Bowie Beauty

Yes, David Bowie’s legendary reinvention of visual presentation in addition to his role as singer, songwriter, and actor gives him the right to appear on this list more than once.

Bowie looks far too cool for school in this photo catching him taking a puff of his cigarette with strange multi-coloured hair.

Bill Gates and the data tower

Just a glimpse into how new technology was sold in the 1990’s. Bill Gates is attempting to demonstrate how much data could be stored in a single CD-ROM. Old news for us, we barely use the things anymore! But in 1994, this technology was pretty mind-blowing.

A Rare Occurrence

The recently deceased Cuban political dictator Fidel Castro and his cohort, the legendary “El Che” – also known as Che Guevara – sail to Cuba on a yacht named “The Granma” in this historical photo. “El Che,” Castro’s assistant in the Cuban revolution, fishes with him.

Meeting for the 26th of July Movement, the two plotted their revolt against the residing Cuban dictator, Fulgencio Batista – something you mention at the next dinner party you attend to sound smart!

Playing his heart out

Big Jay McNeely ends up on the ground as he blows the audience’s mind at the Olympic Auditorium in 1953.

Robert Willoughby snaps this picture of the famous blues artist and saxophonist from Los Angeles who not only had many smash hits all the way up until the 1960s but also was a member of the jazz band “The Tenor Saxophone Honkers.”

A legend in the flesh

Alfred Hitchcock, the man himself. Very few people don’t recognize the name when it is mentioned. The famous and most notable English director and producer up until today, Hitchcock is seen taking a bike ride by the dock – or is he just posing for the camera? We’ll never know what was really going on in this photo taken in France at the Cannes Film Festival in 1972.

The fact that Alfred Hitchcock was quite an original individual is apparent in all of the movies he has directed and produced. After reaching success in Britain cinema, he catapulted into an international directing and producing career, moving to California and changing Hollywood history forever.

The Clintons, 1975

Long, long before the Clintons become one of America’s most prominent political power couples, in this precious rare photo, the young lovers are pictured here sweetly playing volleyball in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

What a pair they were!

The Royal Mug Shot

Maybe it was alcohol or maybe it was his experience in dancing to the “Jailhouse Rock” but for whatever reason, “The King of Rock N’ Roll” seemed to keep his cool when he was arrested in 1970 (for fighting or some other stupid thing.)

Still one of the most legendary much shots I’ve seen. I think we’d all hope to look as badass if we fall into such a predicament ourselves!

The Kid Terminator

Can you recognize the face – or maybe the pectorals! – of, yes, the Governator himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger? Young Schwarzenegger is captured here at his first bodybuilding competition in Austria.

I’m sure that the young 14-year-old boy had no idea that what he thought was the start of a bodybuilding career would eventually evolve into Hollywood. Now, we know him as one of the world’s favorite action stars.

The name’s Connery… Sean Connery

Over the years, we’ve grown attached to several different James Bonds, from Daniel Craig to Pierce Brosnan to, pictured here, Sean Connery, but it’s easy to see who this little Jamaican girl’s favorite is. Connery is picture animatedly signing a coconut for the adoring girl during filming.

The iconic Dr. No was released shortly after this picture was taken, and the entire world joined in with this girl’s adoration of the Hollywood star.

Perfect

Some know actress Jamie Lee Curtis as Hollywood’s Scream Queen, but Curtis became a bit of a fitness icon long after her terrifying debut in John Carpenter’s 1978 hit, Halloween. She was often seen clad in revealing leotards such as this one.

This look fit her well in the romantic 1985 film Perfect where she starred alongside John Travolta as a female aerobics’ instructor. In the movie, Travolta plays a reporter working on a disparaging story about health clubs, and despite this obvious difference of interests, Curtis’ character falls in love with him.

Hanging with The Pearl

Hearing about the famous festival just a few days before it began, Janis Joplin (otherwise known as “The Pearl) made it just in time to perform on the second day of Woodstock. The crowd had the privilege of seeing one of the best female rockers of all time perform in a colorful, psychedelic dress. Joplin was one of the biggest names to perform at Woodstock that year.

Brigitte Bardot at the French Riviera

One of the most recognizable faces of cinema, it’s impossible not to feel familiar with the face of French actress Brigitte Bardot. After her debut in the popular comedy Le Trou Normand when she was only 18, Bardot eventually became one of the biggest icons of the 1950s and 1960s.

Beginning as a ballerina and a model, her talent led her to Hollywood where she starred in a wide array of films such as And God Created Woman, Contempt, and A Very Private Affair and became a major sex symbol. The actress is caught here in a blissful moment playing beach ball at the beach in Cannes.

Stars, they’re just like us

Elizabeth is caught in the throes of young love as she reads love letters sent to her by her famous football champion boyfriend, Glenn Davis, in her bedroom. At just seventeen years old, this photo was taken in 1948.

Though Davis stole her heart at a young age, Taylor didn’t hold onto the Heisman trophy winner for much longer. The classically gorgeous heartbreaker moved on, getting engaged the following year to William Pawley Jr., an ambassador’s son.

Abraham Lincoln’s expression

It’s no surprise that wars age a man, especially when you’re as caught up in it as Abraham Lincoln had to be. The former president is picture here before and after the Civil War. He was elected to the presidency at 52 years old, and at the end of that term, he was thoroughly aged.

Lincoln was a much different man at the end of his leadership role. Four years as president of the United States of America is a long, hard 4 years.

Heartthrob heartache

This picture is irreplaceable – the last one capturing the “Rebel Without a Cause” before his fatal car accident just a few hours later. The photographer managed to snap one while he was at a gas station in 1955.

We will never forget this passionate, handsome Hollywood start. It brings warmth to our hearts to see how happy he was, heading out to race cars, his absolute favorite pastime.

Marilyn Can Fix It

“What is America’s most glamorous vixen, Marilyn Monroe, doing in a Van Nuys factory?” you may be asking yourself. Well, Monroe’s start wasn’t so “glamorous” after all. Orphaned at a young age, she married her neighbor to escape a life of poverty – at just 16 years old!

Her husband eventually had to go overseas during World War 2 which left Marilyn to work for herself – which brings us to this picture. It was the circulating of this picture that began her career.

Audrey Hepburn Shopping With Her Pet Deer

If you know much about Audrey Hepburn, it probably won’t surprise you as much to discover that she had a pet deer. Still one of the most dearly cherished actresses, Hepburn was always very different from the rest. So of course, your typical Chihuahua or Pomeranian just wouldn’t do!

Aubrey was filming the movie Green Mansions, and producers encouraged her to spend time off-set with the deer so that their scenes together would look more natural. She got so attached that she kept the creature, naming him “Pippin.”

Lucille’s Great Balls Of Fire

This picture is typical of the classic 1950s sitcom I Love Lucy where the dynamic duo, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, endeared themselves to all Americans. Here, Lucy is up to just another of her escapades.

After accidentally slamming a custard pie into William Holden’s face, Lucy puts on a fake nose in an attempt to make herself unrecognizable!

Hemingway In The Tub

Author of The Old Man and the Sea and numerous other famous novels, Ernest Hemingway is by far one of the most prominent 20th century American writers. His books have gone on to now be considered classics.

Hemingway’s most creative spot, however, wasn’t his writer’s desk or a forest but, rather, the bathtub! All his best brainstorming was done while soaking in the bath.

Walt Disney Eating Chicken

With every year, the Disney franchise grows bigger and bigger, buying out Star Wars, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and more. Their name is now probably most well-known in entertainment due to their unrivaled success.

But this hugely prosperous company had humble beginnings with its creator Walt Disney and the original characters like Mickey Mouse. Really, Disney was just a creative man who enjoyed drawing cartoons and eating chicken!

Santa Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix was always known for his psychedelia and such in the 1960s, and his wild onstage guitar-smashing antics made his performance at the iconic music festival, Woodstock, one to remember. He was legendary.

But as Saint Nick? Not exactly what you’d expect. But Hendrix willingly dressed the part when he was asked to participate in an advertisement in the magazine Record Mirror.

Robert DeNiro Sr. & Jr.

It’s hard to think of the tough-talking New Yorker as a little baby, but, nonetheless, we all begin at the same place, even Robert DeNiro.

Years begore he takes on such roles in such films as Taxi Driving and Raging Bull, he is pictured here with his father and, Robert DeNiro Sr., who was a world-renowned painter. Robert Jr. shared a very close father-son relationship with his namesake, even dedicating one of his awards to his father.

Dog Helping His Little Friend

The phrase, “Dog is a man’s best friend” has never been better illustrated than in this photo. These two seem like potential partners-in-crime as the pooch willingly helps his little boy out of a predicament.

Often, you’ll find that dogs are more loyal than people, even, especially when you’ve treated yours well. They’ll walk through fire for their doting owners.

Houdini In Chains

Another one with humble beginnings, Harry Houdini was a penniless immigrant who travelled from Hungary to make a new life in America, but little did he know how profitable it would be. The name Houdini is now irrevocably linked with magic as he became one of the most well-known performers of his time.

What Houdini was most remembered for was his acts displaying his ability to escape from being locked in chains wrapped around his body or being put in a straitjacket.

First Class On The Titanic

With all the drama surrounding the sinking of the Titanic, we often neglect that fact that this ship was as exquisite as an on-land, 5-star hotel. Titanic isn’t just the name for a movie, but a real, ritzy, floating hotel!

With all its built-up fame and luxury, the rich and famous clamored to be aboard this once-in-a-lifetime voyage. The end of this venture was, as we know, a tragedy.

General Elizabeth

Queen Elizabeth II was a woman of dignity, propriety, and elegance, so what a surprise to find her in a picture like this one! Well, you’ll be even more surprised to hear why – the young princess worked as a mechanic in World War II.

That’s right. Even her highness rolled up her sleeves, trained, and got right to work beside your average blue-collar man behind the wheel of a military truck.

Marilyn Scores Again

If anyone would attempt playing soccer in high heels, Marilyn Monroe would be the one. Monroe was so loved and sought-after that our blonde beauty was invited to make an appearance at the 1957 soccer game between the Israeli team HaPoel Tel Aviv and the US National Soccer Team at Ebbets Field.

But of course, the boisterous Marilyn didn’t just make an appearance but also spent some time kicking the ball around the field before the game began.

Sergeant Presley

Elvis Presley won over the hearts of any disapproving Americans when he decided in 1958 to serve alongside his countrymen in the army. Though it was a short stint due to his mother’s sudden death from a heart attack, Presley’s service warmed the hearts of any still-credulous Americans.

Rising to fame in the 1950s, Presley was known for challenging social norms with his raunchy dancing. His moves included one’s hips around with a few pelvic thrusts thrown in here and there.

Sinatra Shaving

In 1965, Life photographer John Dominis set aside an entire month to shadow Frank Sinatra in order to catch moments like this one. With this project, we’re able to get a glimpse into the more intimate details of this iconic singer’s personal life. Frank Sinatra is considered a major man’s man, but that doesn’t mean he was afraid to pamper himself in order to look as good as possible.

This iconic photo was taken by Life photographer John Dominis in 1965, who dedicated a full month to shadowing the iconic singer in order to get the most intimate portrait possible of Sinatra’s daily life.

Even Sinatra himself later admitted that he rather liked this photo, and the rest of the world loved seeing him pamper himself behind the scenes, making this photo an instant classic.

Lights, Camera, Danger!

Have you ever watched the beginning of a film and wondered how MGM got such a realistic image of a roaring lion for their opening credits? Probably not, considering the CGI effects of our current era, but before then, things had to get a bit more real and a bit more dangerous.

1928 was a different era entirely. So, they got a lion, pissed him off a bit, and then caught the results on camera – simple as that! As far as we know, there were no fatalities.

Diving In The Thames

If you’ve ever seen London’s River Thames, jumping into it would be the last thing on your mind. Not so for these brave divers. Pictured here are two unknown men leaping right in! Every onlooker’s eye is turned towards them in surprise.

The photo is scenic and one-of-a-kind with The Houses of Parliament and the Westminster Bridge in the background. What a time to be alive.

The Power Of Education

This photo is a lot more than meets the eye – the still bravery of one, single woman in the face of ridicule and hatred. In 1957, Dorothy Count was the first to integrate into what had been an all-white school. Other students weren’t timid about making their feelings clear – they did not want her there.

But Dorothy held her own with strength and dignity, later on saying in interviews that it was her strong faith in God that kept her firm.

Young Bill & Hillary

Young Bill and Hillary met while fellow students at Yale University in 1970. Though they’ve had numerous bad and good times, as we’ve all seen, their marriage has managed to stay intact after all these years. Everyone knows that former US President Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary, the former Senator from New York State, have had their fair share of ups and downs in their decades-long marriage.

It all started when they were young, hopeful, and passionate. And when the two meet during the 1970 summer of love, they couldn’t help but fall for each other.

Andre The 19-Year-Old Giant

You’ve heard of each of the seven wonders of the world, but has anyone spoken to you of the eighth? Andre the Giant, at his 7 foot, 4 inches, was called by some the “eighth wonder of the world.” Here, he shows off his height at the Paris fashion exhibit.

Though he’s one of the most easily recognizable names from the wrestling world, you may never have heard that he actually competed in the very first WrestleMania against Hulk Hogan himself.

Einstein At The Hopi House

Way back in 1931, Albert Einstein took a trip to America. He was considering joining Caltech, but along the way decided to play tourist and visit a few sites of interest. He stopped near the Grand Canyon at the Hopi House.

The tribe welcomed him so enthusiastically that they let him don the traditional Hopi garb. He and his wife bonded well with all sorts of tribe members, adults and children alike.

Obama & Friends

It’s hard to relate this picture of youth and vitality with our tired ex-president Barack Obama, isn’t it? But we were all young once, even the President of the United States of America.

We’re not sure what the circumstances surrounding this picture were, but it seems like Obama and his friends are having a grand old time, probably years before he had any idea of what he was destined for.

Carol Wayne On The Johnny Carson Show

Back when The Tonight Show was hosted by Johnny Carson, actress Carol Wayne often made appearances as the Matinee Lady. It was this that caused the public to fall in love with the endearing actress, resulting in her rising to fame. rose to fame for her many appearances as the Matinee Lady. However, despite being beloved by the public, she ended up rising to fame for morbid reasons.

But she’s remembered most, now, for more tragic reasons as she unexpectedly died in Mexican while on vacation with her husband, Edward Durston. Although many speculated about her death, there was never valid proof to confirm the sinister suspicions.

Arnie & Sly

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone had much more in common than you might think. Not only did they star in the same sort of manly, action-packed movies, but they also managed to date the same woman – Danish actress and model Brigitte Nielson.

Fortunately, that rival did nothing to weaken their friendship. The two who played in major 1980s films such as The Terminator, Rock, and Rambo are inseparable friends even now.

Marilyn & Billy Wilder

Here, director Billy Wilder is caught attempting to help Marilyn Monroe with her lines. It took the actress 47 attempts to get the line “It’s me, Sugar” right; she kept reversing the order, saying, “Sugar, it’s me.”

Turns out, though she was a dream to look at, working with her was less than enchanting. Because of undiagnosed ADHD and her addiction to prescription medication, she often struggled to remember her lines, no matter how simple.

Model Milla

Once named the highest paid model in the world in a 2004 edition of Forbes, it’s not hard to see why in this stunning photo. But can you believe the stunning model, actress, and musician Milla Jovovich was only 13 years old in this photo?

Taken in 1988, this photo was taken the same year she acted in her very first film, The Night Train to Kathmandu. I wish we all skipped the awkward years of puberty like Jovovich did!

Post-Divorce Bliss

Apparently, Nicole Kidman was beyond ecstatic when she finalized her divorce from Tom Cruise, her first husband. She’s caught, here, celebrating her new freedom.

Their relationship began hard and fast, marrying just a year after meeting each other. During that time the two movie stars starred in hit films together such as Far and Away and Eyes Wide Shut. But for reasons still undiscovered, Tom filed for divorce in 2001.

Chaplin & Einstein

Now what are silent film actor Charlie Chaplin and renowned scientist Albert Einstein doing in the same photograph? You may have never put two and two together to realize that these men were from the same era!

Not only that, but they had a bit in common, both European immigrants to the United States (Charlie was born in England and Albert in Germany). They hit it off rather quickly when Albert was touring the States, so naturally, Charlie invited him for dinner!

Young Dalai Lama

Again, no matter your standing in society or your nationality, we all begin as babes, grow into children, those tough teen years, and so on. We know the 14th Dalai Lama well for his peace-promoting efforts and meetings with major figures, from US Presidents to the famous Hollywood actor Richard Gere. But Tenzin Gyatso was once just a simple, young boy born to a farming family in Tibet in 1935.

This unassuming boy took his position of power at the age of 15, which makes us sometimes forge he was once just a little child, like you or me.

The coolest and grooviest place to be

Studio 54 is an exclusive nightclub in New York and all through the 70s and most of the 80s, it was the place to be – that is if you’re considered worthy to enter at the door. This place attracted some of the best and wildest parties from all over the world.

The place was pulsed with roving lights every night and the music throbbed the whole place. Some celebrities made Studio 54 their ideal location for whenever they needed to have a good time. For those who have never been in Studio 54, here’s a brief on what goes on behind those closed doors.

Get The Lowdown on Studio 54

Girls Night

Here’s Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor and Betty Ford having a good time with each other.

Perhaps, their stunning dresses are some of the first things you notice. They were made by Halston, Studio 54’s resident fashion expert.

Get The Lowdown on Studio 54

A Promising Beginning

Studio 54 was not always the bustling hub for fun music and famous people, in fact, the place has been through different phases and has had several identities since its opening in 1927. When it was opened, it was the Gallo Opera House and that lasted a couple of years before it was moved on.

CBS took over the building in 1942 and made it its radio and television home. It became the place where many TV shows started. If you’re familiar with shows like “Beat the Clock” and “Captain Kangaroo”, then you can be very thankful for this building.

It was named Studio 52 at the time until 1977 when Ian Schrager and Steve Rubell took over and named it Studio 54. Then they turned it into the exclusive bustling nightclub that we know of.

So Who Got In?

As you would expect from an exclusive night club, not everyone was allowed in. the owners of the club maintained a strict standard and many nights, co-owner Steve Rubell would stand at the entrance himself working as a ruthless gatekeeper.

What criteria did Rubell look out for to ascertain those deemed worthy to party at such an exclusive place? Honestly, there were no straight answers, they were arbitrary however, if you were a public figure in the entertainment world or in other industries, you were granted access.

Otherwise, you might just have to look for some other place to dance the night away.

The Face Of The Music Industry

From this picture, you might be able to recognize Cher immediately but do you know who the other man is? Apparently, he reinged the music industry with stoic might.

Asylum Records was established by David Geffen in 1970 to over see the budding music careers of musicians like Bob Dylanm Jackson Browne and the Eagles.

About 10 years later, he had established himself further and tightened his grip on his empire by establishing Greffen records under which top artists like Elton John, Cher and Whitesnake went to create chart-topping records.

On the night Studio 54 was opened, David Geffen stood at the door and over the years, he visited the club several time.

Giddy Up

For many people, birthdays are days to sit with friends and have drinks. Some might take it a step further by seeing a movie or going bowling but taking your birthday to Studio 54 was in a league of its own.

The owners understood that prestige might have been enough to get customers through the door but they needed more than that to keep them. As a result, they always made sure all their guests felt welcome.

This is a picture of Bianca Jagger on her 30th birthday Rubell knew that you needed more to keep your patrons coming back than an air of prestige. As a result, he and Schrager went to great lengths to make sure their guests felt welcome.

This picture features Bianca Jagger on the back of a horse on her 30th birthday, courtesy of Studio 54. At that level of attention, it’s hard to turn up your nose.

A Night On the Town For One Of America’s Top Comedians

We have seen Robin Williams crack us up in “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Dead Poets Society” however, it almost seems as if he is the same in reality – fun loving and infectiously happy.

From the image below, we can see Robin Williams and his better half at Studio 54. Seems they are ready to dance all night.

Still Dancing The Night Away

As much as lots of celebrities party here, you don’t have to be a golden-voiced genius or a starry-eyed Hollywood actor to get in. from the image, we can see Truman Capote having a good time with another guest.

For those that don’t know who Truman Capote is, he is a writer and he authored the popular nonfiction novel, “In Cold Blood”.

Satisfaction

In that picture was Mick Jagger’s first wife, Bianca, although the Rolling stones front man was nowhere to be seen in that image.

However, he is seen here with Jerry Hall, a blonde, tall supermodel. He and Bianca got divorced in 1978.

Smile!

It only makes sense that when you eat at a place as prestigious as Studio 54, you’d want the moment with other stars captured. Very few places could be better than taking a picture in front of a giant picture of your own face smiling at you.

In this picture, we see Debbie Harry strike a pose with other guests including Jerry Hall, Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Paloma Picasso.

No End To This Party

Rubell and Schrager were arrested for tax evasion in 1980. This brought the decade-long party to a halt. However, it didn’t dampen the celebrations that were already in progress.

Here’s Diana Ross singing out her heart in what was the biggest jubilee the club would experience in a long while. She dedicated the record to the 2 men that made it possible.

A Night For Greased Lightning

In 1978, Grease, an infectiously feel-good musical film was released. Most people looked forward to humming along and tapping their toes in theatres but Olivia Newton-John celebrated at Studio 54.

Here is a picture of Olivia Newton-John and the producer of the film, Allan Carr. Newton still went on to dance the night away after singing and dancing for the big screen.

Still Dancing On

Bianca had a lot of fun moments at Studio 54 even though her marriage to Mick Jagger endured a slow painful death.

She let’s her hair down in this picture with a fellow patron. Surely, the chemistry would have made Mick Jagger a little jealous.

Arriving In Style

Studio 54 truly had high standards for people who enter the nightclub but stars like Diana Ross were allowed to just stroll in and out like she was going into a dimly lit bar in the hood.

Ross accompanies actor Richard Gere into Studio 54 as seen in this photo. This time, there’s a famous celebrity by his side.

Never Too Young?

Perhaps, it may not be okay for a child to be seen in a nightclub…well, not the young Drew Barrymore.

She was only 7 years old at the time this picture was taken and didn’t know much about the drinking and amorous exchanges going on around her. She was so happy she danced with patrons a lot taller than her.

Dancing Teen

Apparently, there were other patrons aside Drew Barrymore to enjoy the vibrant culture of Studio 54.

Here’s a teenage Brooks with an amazing smile, dancing her heart off with some serious rhythm. Since she was 11 years old, she had been going to the nightclub.

Mother And Daughter

Eartha Kitt is known for her encapsulating stage presence and powerful voice.

Here is an image of Kitt at the Studio 54 nightclub in 1978 with her daughter.  She was an amazing guest.

Pensive

Frank Sinatra was seen a couple of times at the Studio 54 nightclub.

Actually, Sinatra wasn’t always a person that could just come in when he wanted. As a matter of fact, he has been turned away once however, here he is, sometime in 1978 standing triumphant but serious.

The Literary Scene At Night

As if receiving that that dreaded rejection letter from a top literary journal isn’t enough, you could bump into the editor at a nightclub.

Here is George Plimpton, a former editor of the lauded Paris Review – kind of the Studio 54 of the literary world. It was at the Soho Arts Awards After Party that this picture was taken.

Somewhere Quiet

For individuals who hook up with an amazing person at Studio 54, there was no need to make a long drive to your small studio apartment. You could just make use of one of the many spaces for retreat offered by the club.

These private rooms were amazingly decorated such that it gives an air of romance that could be considered a haven especially when you consider that you’re at a club filled with a boisterous storm of drunken individuals.

It’s Raining Riches!

Surprises are the spices that make a party great. Even with very little items like a spontaneous confetti shower or an unexpected parade of balloons. As long as it’s not expected, it can liven up a party’s atmosphere.

However, the party organizers at Studio 54 didn’t settle for such a child’s play. Whenever there was a party, especially if important people were on the guest lists, the organizers would meticulously setup a net across the ceiling and fill it with luxurious goodies of all sorts.

A Good Time

Let loose at the club, you just might get a cool drinking buddy. That was the case with Studio 54 when almost everyone maintained this air of untouchable importance.

These are 3 sociable men, having a drink and having a good laugh. They are John Belushi, James Brown and Keith Richards.

Always A Reason To Celebrate

To celebrate the release of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in 1978, Studio 54 organized one very extravagant party.

Here’s George Burns, an actor and comedian having a blast.

Disco And Dance!

Without the king of pop livening up the mood, it couldn’t really be a dance party.

For the perfect night, just throw in a comedian and an actor. Here are Michael Jackson and Woody Allen having an amazing time at studio 54.

Life Of The Party

There’s was no defined dress code for Studio 54 guests but the whole idea – an unwritten rule if you may – is to dress to kill.

From the image below, you would agree with me that it was simply the case with Alice Cooper here, but if you really think of it, he might not have been dressed to get anyone’s attention but himself because this outfit is consistent with what he usually wears on stage.

Here, he strikes a pose with Jean Stapleton, an actress that obviously doesn’t seem fazed by Cooper’s getup.

Acting Casual

Apparently, even Alice Cooper, as eccentric as he may be can have a good time especially with his better half.

Here, he is seen chilling with his wife at the club in more conventional clothing. This image is from the release party for “Sgt. Pepper”.

Meet The Manager

Rubell might have had a hand in running the place everyday and despite the fact that he always felt the need to be at the entrance to make sure only the right people were let in, he also took time to mingle every now and then with the guests.

Here he is have a chat with the king of pop himself, Michael Jackson and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler. It seems Tyler had his mind on something else.

A Piece Of Cake

Studio 54, for all its glamor and sophistication still observed the simple pleasure of having delicious cakes for birthdays.

This was from the birthday of the prestigious Elizabeth Taylor who is elegantly dressed. She was assisted by fashion king, Halston for her special day.

The Artsy Partnership

Once upon a time, singer Lou Reed and pop artist Andy Warhol made the perfect team.

When Studio 54 was still in its prime, Lou Reed performed with the band The Velvet Underground at the club and it was overseen by Warhol. Perhaps it was just to make sure everything went smoothly but Warhol accompanied Reed to the club.

That said, he also relaxed a little and had a good time himself.

The Artist’s Shot

Apparently, there was more to Andy Warhol than just having an eye for Campbell’s soup cans.

Here we see Warhol who captures capture Canadian actress in a single snapshot. Meanwhile Trudeau gives a big smile while striking her best pose.

Rocketing To the Top

We can see Elton John here with a baseball hat and a casual tee. What you might not get from this picture is that he was celebrating a landmark achievement in his career.

RCA records had just granted Elton John a record label in 1978 hence the celebration in Studio 54. Here he is with George and Alana Hamilton and singer Ron Stewart.

Getting His Dance Pants Ready

Elton understood that he couldn’t just sit and look on at his own celebration even though he wasn’t much of a dancer.

Here is Elton adjusting his pants so as to easily glide down the dance floor.

Feeling The Love

If you think what you see in this photo is the blossoming phase of romance, then you’re absolutely right.

Here’s the beautiful fashionista Dian von Furstenberg and savvy businessman Barry Diller. They eventually got married.

I Spy A Son Of A President

This club had it all, from writers to singers to actors. All that was missing was a president’s child.

Well, not anymore. Here’s Jack Ford having a good time with Alice cooper. This image is from 1978.

The Piano Man And His Woman

These are arguably the cutest couple in the club.

Vladimir Horowits and his amazing wife Wanda, dancing the night away. This picture is from Mr. Horowitz birthday on October 2 1978.

Tempted

The Temptations, a Motown sensation group signed a deal with Atlantic Records in 1977.

As usual, Studio 54 had a special celebration for the passionate singers. Here’s singer Bette Midler greeting them – starry eyed and joyous.

Happy Dance

To have a good time, you don’t necessarily need drugs but there are some advantages of having psychedelics around.

Dr. Timothy Leary, LSD research pioneer, as seen in this image shows some moves. This was at the 1978 premiere after party of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”.

Presidential

The president’s son was hosted by Studio 54, now it’s time to host the daughter of one.

Caroline Kennedy walks in with her date, Tome Carney. Caroline’s mind seems to be on something else and we’re not exactly sure what’s running through the mind of Tom Carney either.

The Donald Hits The Club

So many people wanted to get through the doors when Studio 54 was opened.

There was fierce competition, as you would expect. Donald trump was among the grand opening attendees. Several years later, reminiscing the events he witnessed at the club, he remarked that the nightclub was a special kind of memorable and unlikely to happen again.

A Friendly Fight

The controversial historical film “Caligula” which was released in 1979 was produced by Franco Rossellini but I’m sure he didn’t know he was going to be part of a great cake battle back at Studio 54.

Here’s a picture of Rossellini and Rubell covered in icing, throwing globs of cake at each other and grinning from ear to ear like a couple of kids – with the crowd looking on with wrapped attention looking confused and engaged at the same time.

Bringing In The Horses Once More

What was it with Studio 54 and horses? Well, I guess we’d never know but I guess there’s something about saying you stood beside a 1000-pound animal indoors in a place that’s not a barn.

Dolly patron came to the club one night to celebrate her after party after an exhilarating concert. You’d think she’d have just gotten a few beers for guests and engage in small talks. Well, she brought in not just a horse but hay bales and even befriended the horse.

Simon Says Party

Milton Bradley launched a game in 1978 called Simon. It was an interactive game that was aimed at testing the player’s memory vial sound and light. Perhaps the best testers for such a game would be the elite partiers of Studio 54.

Hope Is The Thing With Feathers

You might have seen the ceremonious birthday horseback ride by Bianca Jagger. Well this was a bit more laidback than that.

Studio 54 organized a party for Bianca in 1977. This is a picture of Bianca dressed and posed like beautiful doves. They are peaceful to look at but may not be able to give rides. Hopefully, the hubbub of the club didn’t spook them.

Too Much Fun

Even the hardest partiers at an exclusive club eventually run out of steam.

Here’s a picture of Truman capote, exhausted and sleeping through a chat by Kate Harrington and Gloria Swanson.

The Suspense

Watching yourself on big screen is a privilege not everyone would get to experience in their lifetime. Even more impressive, not everyone can watch themselves on big screen with a bunch of people whose lives depended on their presence on the big screen.

Here’s a photo of Ali MacGraw at the premiere of her film “The Players” and Robert, her husband at the time keeps close.

Princess Leia

There used to be a very expressive Carrie Fisher even before there was a Star Wars legacy.

Fisher is seen here standing with David Geffen having a pensive look on her face. What they are talking about is anyone’s guess; perhaps, she was wondering what her next step was, career-wise.

Or maybe she was just wondering what to have for breakfast in the morning, no way we could really know.

No Hope?

This is another image of Bianca, this time, holding 2 doves. The birds may be the symbol of peace and hope, Bianca has lamented that Studio 54 could be anything but those.

As a matter of fact, she was quoted saying in an interview that she “wished it never existed.” Perhaps, it might have been because she was weathering a rocky marriage with a rock star at the time. Great moments could turn sour at any time.

The Uncertain Ending

Despite all the great things about Studio 54, not everything was great. There was an impending dormant conflict that was waiting to erupt from beneath the feet of unsuspecting clubbers.

The day finally arrived in 1980 when Rubell and Schrager were busted for tax evasion. Here is a picture of the whole place gutted of its music and swarming with police men as well as club patrons and confused tourists.

The Regret

As the saying goes, “Hindsight is 20/20,” Rubell once boasted in an interview that only a mafia could possibly make more money than his club. He also said that if things had been done a little more quietly, business might have gone on as usual.

That said, the final party was thrown and the duo headed to prison.

The Anticipated Reopening

Studio 54 doors were open a year later but under the management of Mark Fleischman.

Curious onlookers as well as eager patrons stood outside the long silent club waiting to fill up the place once again. Among those on the guest list were Andy Warhol, Cary Grant and Brooke shields.

The Usual Crazy

As expected, there was a certain level of extravagance that goes hand in hand with equivalent prestige.

Here’s a photo of the “cigarette girl” that sold goods to the excited patrons.

New Name, New Identity

Studio 545 eventually gave up that lofty name in 1988.

The building was then called The Ritz from then until 1994 and thy majorly hosted concerts.

Adapting to Theater

Even The Ritz didn’t last long. The building was taken over by new managers and it became Roundabout Theatre.

The building was totally renovated and again, it’s reopening was highly anticipated. Amongst those that performed at its reopening are Sister sledge and Gloria Gaynor. Again it faded into irrelevance.

What’s In A Name?

Today, the building is mostly referred to as the Roundabout Theatre Company at Studio 54.

Here’s a picture of Studio 54 in its current state. It’s a fact that it is no longer the boisterous hub it used to be, neither is it the prestigious nightclub that once attracted the cream of the crop but you’d agree with me that the building has been put to good use.

Feinstein’s/54 Below is a thriving restaurant that sits at the basement.

Even more impressive, the venue has regained that name, Studio 54 and its legacy is one that continues to beam amid the blur and bustle of New York City.
