Horny Dolphins Close A French Beach

We usually hear about beaches that are shut down because sharks where spotted. This case is different. The hostile nature of one horny dolphin named Zafar has forced the authorities in this small French town to shut down the beach.

In the seaside town Landévenec, Brittany, surfers, and swimmers who use kayaks have been harassed by a seemingly aggressive male dolphin. The overly intrusive dolphin has almost overturned some kayaks while surfers have been constantly harassed in the water. This ‘energetic’ male dolphin has not spared small boats and swimmers. The experts say its behavior is not absurd and maybe humans should give him some time to get over this phase.

Before the closure, encounters with the dolphin became quite regular. However, there have been no injuries thankfully. The visitors to the beach claim it seems friendly sometimes, but they have experienced some dominant behavior that could be threatening.

Currently, the male dolphin named Zafar has been put on the ‘watch list.’ The visitors and surfers are not allowed to swim or go surfing whenever Zafar is spotted in the sea. Everyone has also been advised to stay away from the dolphin maintaining a distance of at least fifty meters at all times.

There have been mixed reactions to this order from the mayor who runs the town. While some residents and tourists have applauded the decision, others condemn the action saying it could cause the public to regard dolphins as dangerous animals. This perspective could put dolphins in danger in many ways. It cannot, however, be ruled out that there could be an injury resulting from an unfortunate encounter with an ‘over-eager’ Zafar in the future.

The aquatic and wildlife experts have shared some information to help the public understand what is happening. Dolphins are peculiar animals. The male dolphins do not only mate with females for reproduction. Male dolphins have been found to exhibit homosexual tendencies as a way of showing dominance over other dolphins. There have also been situations where dolphins become ‘too close’ to their handlers.

Elizabeth Hawkins, the lead researcher at the Dolphin Research Institute in Australia, claims that Zafar is going through a phase in his life. While stating that it is not abnormal behavior, she points out that Zafar who is mostly spotted alone in the water has probably been excluded from other groups of dolphins. He is, therefore, trying to force a social interaction with human beings to meet his need for interaction.

Hawkins commends the French authorities for implementing the ban. Zafar could be in danger if he becomes used to interacting with human beings. This exposure can make Zafar vulnerable to injury and abuse by humans. It is best for the dolphin to find a way to become established among a dolphin community rather than with humans.

Dolphins are known to be friendly and sociable with humans. However, they are still wild animals except the dolphins have been brought up in private aquariums. The seas remain their natural habitat, and we should be happy to allow them to flourish in the seas when necessary.
