Entertainment |

Are you excited for the new season of Game of Thrones? The HBO series is currently airing the seventh season, but there’s still more stories to be told. Author George R.R. Martin is still hard at work on the latest novel installment,The Winds of Winter, and fans are eagerly awaiting its publication. There’s still many stories to tell about Westeros, and a realm of unanswered questions. Let’s look at what’s to come for Game of Thrones in terms of the book and television series!

The Winds of Winter

The Winds of Winter is the sixth book in the Game of Thrones series and has been delayed several times over the years. As of 2017, fans have waited for a total six years! When GRRM first began writing the series, he envisioned it as a trilogy, and The Winds of Winter was to be the conclusion. Luckily, it’s not, and we still have this sixth book, plus a seventh, A Dream of Spring, to anticipate. GRRM has commented that he believes both of the books will be 1,500 pages each. Writing the books is a complicated process that takes time, and he doesn’t believe in outlines, saying “outlines make me lose interest

The Winds of Winter will quickly resolve the cliffhanger of the previous book, A Dance with Dragons. We know that many favorite characters will each have chapters from their point of view. GRRM has confirmed he doesn’t intend to have the characters geographically separated in the newest Game of Thrones novel. So far the list includes:

  • Sansa Stark
  • Arya Stark
  • Tyrion Lannister

  • Aeron Greyjoy
  • Theon Greyjoy
  • Victarian Greyjoy

  • Arianne Martell
  • Barristan Selmy
  • White Walkers/Others

Season 7 is coming! Season 7 is coming!

Since the publication of A Dance with Dragons, Game of Thrones reference books have been published to tide fans over. These titles include the series’ book of maps entitled The Lands of Ice and Fire, and the World of Ice and Fire: The Untold History of Westeros and the Game of Thrones. If you want to eat like a Westeros citizen, there’s even Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook!

Game of Thrones on HBO

While HBO is airing the seventh season of Game of Thrones, the network is currently thinking about the eighth season. The seventh season uses plot points and outlines supplied by Martin to go along with the grand story of the books, and not even the actors know what will happen to their characters in the future!

This will be the last season of the show, and should hopefully bring everything to a satisfying close. We don’t know much about this season, but it’s confirmed that it will be six episodes long. The last fans heard, the final season of Game of Thrones could air in 2019! Talk about a long wait! Producer Benioff describes the eighth season as the continuation and conclusion of “one long story.” He says that the show isn’t like others where writers and producers try to figure out what happens season-to-season. He added, “ From pretty close to the beginning, we talked about doing this in 70 - 75 hours, and that's what we'll end up with.”

Even though fans may hate the idea of saying goodbye to their favorite characters and locations, that’s not the end of the story! What’s next for the series?

The Future of Game of Thrones

After both books are published and the show ends, is this the end of Game of Thrones? We doubt it! HBO has confirmed that they’re exploring four separate spin-offs. GRRM has said that these will all be prequels, which will allow fans to delve even deeper into the Game of Thrones canon. The spinoffs are described as “new stories set in the secondary universe of Westeros." Two of the shows were originally pitched in August 2016 and Martin is working on the scripts with a team of writers. GRRM stresses, however, that the idea is not to all of the shows but the ones that work. He’s also teased that a fifth script is in development. So fans, you think you know Westeros? Get ready for even more!
