This week, all whiskey connoisseurs around the world will get to celebrate International Whiskey Day. This takes place on the 28 March and is a day for those who enjoy their booze to really take part in some of the finest spirits known to man. As one of the most popular forms of alcohol around, whiskey carries a certain reputation that ensures it stands out from the crowd.

With the big day just around the corner, though, do you get the difference between the various different forms of alcohol that often fall under the whiskey banner?

At the moment, most people might accidentally refer to Scotch, Rye, Bourbon or Whiskey as Whiskey. They are all, though, a little different from each other. If you want to make sure that you celebrate in the correct style this year, then it might be worthwhile reading a bit more into what makes a Whiskey and what makes any of the other drinks possible.

The differences can be fairly minimal but somewhat stark, depending on what you are drinking. If you want to get the most out of each bottle that you pick up, then, use this knowledge.

International Whiskey Day: Scotch, Rye, Bourbon and Whiskey

  • Whiskey is the most common version, though you might know it instead as whisky depending on where you come from. Whiskey/whisky is made by using fermented grain, then allowed to age in a massive white oak cask. This allows it to come out that rich, loving brown look that we all know whiskey stands out for.
  • Scotch, meanwhile, is all about the Scottish equivalent – as the name may suggest. It’s made from malted barley, and it sits to age in oak barrels for at least three years. Often, though, it sits for a much longer period of time. Unlike whiskey, it’s common for Scotch to have a very distinctive smoky taste, rather than the variety available otherwise.
  • Bourbon is another fine choice of alcoholic beverage and it’s made from corn mostly. It has to be at least 51% corn; though other grains can be used in the process. It must be stored in a charred oak container, too, and no additive can be included into the bottle. Bourbon is among the most popular known forms of this type of beverage and is often very varied due to the sheer number of bourbon brands.
  • Rye is very similar to other drinks, though it is made using the rye grass normally found within wheat. It’s very powerful and tends to be made from at least 51% rye. It tastes very spicy and tends to have a very rich and enterprising taste, making it hard for some people to get used to drinking.

With this in mind, then, you should find it much easier to put together a fine collection of alcoholic beverages for International Whiskey Day. Just remember to read the label; you might wind up celebrating this fated day with the wrong kind of booze!
