70's Female Artists Who Changed Our Lives

The '70s was a time filled with "cutting edge" computer games, political scandals and fashion outfits such as bell-bottom trousers. Pam Grier

Linda Gray

You most likely saw her in the earliest phase of her acting career and you probably didn't even know her as the celebrity she would turn to. She first featured on "The Graduate" where she portrayed the role of Mrs. Robinson's body double. Her most popular part would be her role as Sue Ellen on "Dallas", which was on the air from 1978-1991. She was also cast again as Sue Ellen in the reboot of "Dallas" (2012-2014). Linda Ronstadt

Linda was once considered the "Queen of Rock" and "First Lady of Rock"; she started her career by playing at Troubadour, a famous Hollywood nightclub. She became popularly known after she fine-tuned her songs to a style that would remain exclusively hers all through the history of music and which proceeded to win her 10 Grammy awards and create in excess of 30 platinum and gold records amid her career.

She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2013, prompting her to resign from the music front. She also released a book titled "Simple Dreams: A Musical Memoir" in the same year.

Barbara Streisand

She is a massively famous, multi-talented singer, producer, writer, songwriter, composer, and actress. She featured in "Hello Dolly" and "Funny Girl" in the ‘60s; however, she really made a name for herself in the '70s. She is still very active in the music and acting scene, and she just finished a tour of late. In 2015, she declared that she would be releasing her memoir.

Billie Jean King

Billie Jean King was the victor in "The Battle of the Sexes" tennis match against the male champion, Bobby Riggs, in 1973. She was the first female sportsperson to announce that she was gay in 1973. In 1987, she got inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame; and she has been celebrated in a movie which starred Steve Carrell and Emma Stone. The title of the movie is, "Battle of the Sexes".

Ann-Margret

Ann-Margret made a name for herself in the movie business when she starred as Kim Mcafee in the film adaptation of the play, "Bye Bye Birdie" in 1963. She is still active in the industry even today. She starred alongside Morgan Freeman and Michael Caine in the 2017 comedy hit, "Going in Style", where she played the role of Annie Santori. She also dabbled in the music scene and she has been nominated several times at the Grammys.

Allison Arngrim

Allison Arngrim portrayed the character of Nellie Oleson in "The Little House on the Prairie". Although the role earned her some minor parts in different TV series and movies, she never enjoyed as much success in any other role as she did as 'Nellie Oleson'. Her memoir titled "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated" was released in 2010. She is currently working with several charity organizations.

Teri Garr

Terri Garr's portrayal of Inga in the 1974 movie "Young Frankenstein" is one of the many reasons why the movie was a comedic treasure. After the success of the movie, Teri went on to feature in other hit movies such as, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and "Tootsie". She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2002. She is presently the National Chair for the “Women Against MS” program and also the National Ambassador for the” National Multiple Sclerosis Society”.

Cicely Tyson

She began her career in the modeling scene before she made the transition to the acting scene. She has been significantly acclaimed for many of her performances in films and TV series such as, "Roots", "King", "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pitman" and "Sounder". She appeared on the hit TV series, "How to Get Away with Murder" in 2017. She has no plans to hang her acting gloves even though she is now 92 years old.

Charlene Tilton

Tilton was also on the cast of "Dallas" and she played the role of the wild one, Lucy Ewing. She is 4 feet and 11 inches, and this small stature gave her the moniker "the poisonous dwarf". After her role on "Dallas", she dabbled in the world of pop singing. Presently, she does a little acting on some movies or TV shows, however, she is most keen about her philanthropic work with organizations who help foster kids.

Paula Prentiss

She normally acted in the comedic roles in the ‘60s; however, she displayed her serious side in "The Stepford Wives", a 1975 cult horror movie. She has remained active in movies but she hasn't be cast as the lead in any file for a long while. Her latest role was in the 2016 horror movie "I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House", where she played the role of Iris.

Loretta Swit

Loretta became widely popular for her role as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on the TV show "M*A*S*H". She was one of just four members of the cast that remained regular on the show amid it 11-episodes run and which ended up winning two Emmy awards for the performance.

Her last on-screen appearance was in 1998, although, she did a few voice-over roles in 2015. However, she will be making a return to the big screen in a movie that will be released some this year.

Debbie Harry

Debbie Harry released her first album with the band 'Blondie' in 1976, and this album made her loved by many. Her real name is Angela Tremble and in May of 2017, she released her 11th studio album with the band 'Blondie'. She got inspired by Elton John to start doing some charity work in 2011. A few of her charities are the Endometriosis Foundation of America and Amnesty International Human Rights.

Jane Seymour

Jane turned into a worldwide sensation after her role as the sexy Bond girl, Solitaire, in the 1973 Bond film, "Live and Let Die". After her role as Solitaire, it was quite easy for her to secure roles in movies like "Battlestar Galactica" and "The Four Feathers". While she is still a regular face on the big screen, she is also into a few other things like jewelry designing and writing self-help books and inspirational books.

Diane Keaton

Faye Dunaway

Faye Dunaway began her career on the Broadway stage before she had her break on the big screen in 1967 when she was featured in the movie "The Happening". She took home an Oscar Award that same year for her role as Bonnie Parker in the movie "Bonnie and Clyde". She's still on the acting scene and she just featured in the 2017 thriller, "Inconceivable".

Julie Andrews

I highly doubt that anyone can think of Julie Andrews and not remember her as the lead character in the movie musicals, "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins". The incredibly gifted actress who has the voice of an angel featured in five ABC variety special between 1973 and 1975. She was a voice-over actress on "Despicable Me 3" where she portrayed the role of Gru's mom.

Beverly Johnson

Beverly Johnson featured on the cover of American Vogue in August of 1974. She was the very first African American model to ever feature on the cover of the magazine. After this achievement, she turned out to be the first African American model to be featured on the French edition Of Elle magazine the following year.

She wrote an article in the 2014 edition of Vanity Fair magazine; this article gave the main trace of allegations of Bill Cosby's alleged sexual assault scandal in the '80s. She restates her declarations in her memoirs which was released in 2015.

Karen Lynn Gorney

Karen Lynn Gorney portrayed the role of Tara Martin from 1970-1974 on the show' "All My Children". She took a break from the acting scene in the '80s, just for her to go back to the small screen in the 1990s. Lorraine Gary

"Jaws" was a box office hit and Lorraine Gary enjoyed every moment of it. After the release of her 1979 movie, "1941", she had decided that she would be ending her acting career. However, she was brought back from retirement once again in 1987 to star as Ellen Brody in the last installment of the movie, "Jaws the Revenge". She has now retired from acting, although, she is still very much involved in some charities like the Human Rights Africa Advisory Committee and the Human Rights Watch Women's Right Advisory Committee.

Ellen Burstyn

The 1970s was the decade of Ellen Burstyn.  Her chain of hit movies cuts across the 70's starting with her 1971 film, “The Last Picture Show” which got her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination.  1973’s cult horror film, “The Exorcist,” which also got her another nomination, however, she finally took home an Oscar Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Alice Hyatt in the horror/suspense movie, “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” She recently featured alongside Sharon stone in the 2017 movie “A Little Something for your Birthday.”

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep started her career on the stage of Broadway just like a few other actresses on this list. She became popularly known in 1977 when she featured in the TV film "Deadliest Season". She ended the '70s by featuring in the 1979 movie, "Kramer v Kramer". Her role in the movie won her an Academy Award for the best-supporting-actress and also a Golden Globe Award. She is one of the most famous actresses in the movie industry and she is the person with the most Academy Awards nominations till date.

Marilu Henner

Since she is 1 of 12 individuals with a Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, Marilu Henner was particularly fit to take in her lines for her part of Elaine Nardo in the much-cherished TV sitcom, "Taxi." Before she was featured on "Taxi", she began the 70's by being a member of the traveling tour organization for "Grease," the Broadway melodic. Carol Kane

Diane Ross was the lead singer of the 1960's singing sensations, "The Supremes" and she instantly became popular on the musical scene. The Supremes is viewed as a standout amongst the most prominent and successful groups in US music history.

The Supremes' main hits incorporate powerful melodies like “Keep Me Hangin’ On” and “Stop! In the Name of Love”.  Diana Ross left the group in 1970', and she started her own solo music career. Her first album which was self-titled had smash hits like the number one “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.”

What is most incredible is the fact that Diana Ross still goes on tours today. President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

Mindy Cohn

She got her acting breakthrough when she was cast to play the role of Natalie Green on the TV hit show, "The Facts of Life" which aired between 1979 and 1988. She accompanied this success by featuring in different TV shows such as “The Kids from Room 402”, “The Secret Life of an American Teenager” and “The Second Half”.  Most people don't know this, but Mindy was the voice-over actress of Velma Dinkey in the cartoon series "Scooby-Doo". She got cast for a role in the drama "Hollywood Dirt" in 2017.

Cybill Shepherd

We initially met Cybill Shepherd in 1971 when she featured in her debut movie "The Last Picture show". She went on to feature in numerous roles in various hit motion pictures and TV shows like "The Heartbreak Kid" and "Taxi Driver". She also displayed her acting gifts on the Broadway stage, where she featured alongside James Earl Jones in "The Best Man". She was featured in the movies "Do You Believe?" in 2015.

Agnetha Faltskog

If there was a debate to determine which pop group defined the '70s, ABBA would probably be the winning group. This Swedish pop group was formed in 1972 and they proceeded to release hit tracks like "Fernando", “Take a Chance on Me", and obviously, "Dancing Queens". The band got their name from the first later of the names of every one of its members. Agnetha Faltskog was a part of the group until they separated in the '80s. She started her solo career, but sadly, it wasn't a successful one. She released a biography called "Agnetha Faltskog: The Girl with the Golden Hair" in 2016.

Carly Simon

This singer had a lot of songs that took fans back to the '70s. Her exceptional style of music will forever personify that decade, beginning with the release of her first hit song, "That's the Way I've Always Heard it Should Be" from her first album that was released in 1971. Her second album titled "Anticipation" was released a few months after her first album, and on it was the hit song of the same name. "You're So Vain", the song that defined her career, was released in 1972, and there were numerous speculations at the time about who she was talking about in the song. She released her memoir called, "Boys in Trees: A Memoir", in 2015 and told stories from her childhood and also her marriage to James Taylor.

Betty White

Betty White was at first an extremely successful TV talk show host. She started acting and appearing on the small screen in the 1940s. She got her first recurring role on "Life with Elizabeth" in the 1950s. Her acting career blew up from there on. She was featured on a few hit shows in the 1970s; some of them are “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and her self-titled “The Betty White Show.”  Obviously, she is most adored as the hysterically clueless Rose on the show "The Golden Girls." She has no plan to slow down her acting career; she is presently in her 90’s and as feisty as ever.

Sigourney Weaver

She also featured in the Woody Allen movie, "Annie Hall". Weaver featured on her first motion picture in 1977. In spite of the fact that her part in the movie was a small one, her gifts were recognized and she went on to get her own lead role before the decade was over.

She is most renowned for her role in the "Alien" franchise where she plays the part of Ripley. She has also featured in other major projects like "Avatar, "Ghostbusters" and "Holes". Her gifts aren't limited to the screens alone as she has won a Tony award for her work on Broadway.

Catherine Bach

She played the role of Daisy Duke on "The Dukes of Hazard" (1979-1985) and she has been making adolescent hearts beat faster than the General Lee's motor ever since. She accompanied this new found popularity with different roles on several movies, TV shows, and TV movies like her 2012 recurrent role as Anita Lawson on "The Young and the Restless". Lynda Carter

Chris Evert

In 1976, she was honored by the Sport's Illustrated Magazine and she was given the first Sportswoman of the Year Award. She now runs a tennis academy in Florida and she also designs her own line of tennis wears for ladies.

Shelley Duvall

Jodi Foster

She later made the transition from TV to the stage, going on tours with a few musical productions. She wrote a book titled, "What would Mary Ann do? A Guide to Life", in 2014. Olivia Newton-John

Although she is most renowned for her role alongside John Travolta in the musical movie of 1978 titled "Grease", she has been featured in various movie roles and obviously, numerous studio albums. Maybe her greatest work was for her role as the lead character in the 1980 movie, "Xanadu" where she also wrote the majority of the soundtrack. Her latest album titled "Friends for Christmas", was released in 2016 and her most recent appearance on the screen was on the 2017 movie, "Sharknado: Global Swarming".  Olivia still tours regularly.

Kirstie Alley

Kirstie Alley landed her first major role as Saavik in the 1982 classic "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan", just a few years after she after she broke into Hollywood in 1978. She featured in the satirical series "Scream Queens" in 2016 where she played the role of Ingrid Hoffel. However, she will forever be loved for her role as Rebecca Howe on "Cheers"; a role which earned her a Golden Globe in 1991.

Traci Lords

Although Traci Lords started her career in the adult movie industry, she made the changeover to conventional projects and she has since been featured in several roles in projects like, "MacGyver", "Married with Children" and "Cry Baby". She has also appeared on "Melrose Place" and "Nash Bridges". She has also done some work in the music industry and some of her songs have even been utilized as soundtracks for some movies.

Jane Fonda

It seemed as though her acting career slowed down for a few years after she had won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in "Klute" in 1971. Her career picked up some steam after she began her own production company called "IPC Films". She featured as the lead character in the movie "Fun with Dick and Jane", which she also produced. She took a little acting sabbatical in the 1990s after a couple of more movies but she made a comeback to feature in the 2005 movie "Monster-in-Law". Joanna Campbell portrayed the role of Isis in the kid's TV series, "The Secrets of Isis" from the 6th of September 1975 to the 3rd of September 1977.  This appeared to have been the highlight of her professional acting career as it was very obvious that she was done with acting by the '80s. I'm sure everyone recalls who Daryl Hannah is. For those who don't, she is the stunning beauty who stole our hearts away in movies like, "Splash" and "Steel Magnolias". Charlotte Rampling

She began her acting career in French and Italian art-house movies like "The Damned" and "The Night Porter" in the 1970s. She went on to feature in some Woody Allen movies such as, "Angel Heart" and "Stardust Memories". She is still a present figure in the acting world, and she most notably featured as Evelyn Vogel in "Dexter". She won an Emmy award for her role in "Restless" in 2012. In 2015, she released an autobiography, showing that she still had much to offer in the industry and to the world.

Honor Blackman

Although Honor Blackman started her career on the set of “The Avengers,” she was quoted saying, “No More Avengers! There’s nothing new to get out of it – I want to go forward, not backward.”  She left the show in the past and proceeded to play the role of Laura west in "Upper Hand" as well as playing the role of a Bond girl in "Goldfinger". Although she isn't as active in the industry as she used to be, she still features in some small roles, like her role in 2015's "You, Me and Them" where she played the role of Rose Walker.

Barbi Benton

Although her rise to fame may have been because she appeared four times on the cover of a certain men's magazine, she turned into a favorite of Hugh Heffner and she became his girlfriend for a long while. They broke up in 1976. She transitioned to the acting scene and she got featured in numerous TV shows like "Sugar Time" and "The Love Boat". She got married to George Gradow, a real estate developer, in 1979. Her last public appearance was in 2014 when she revealed that Bill Cosby frequently visited a particular mansion owned by an ex-boyfriend of hers.

Susan Dey

Jaclyn Smith

Jaclyn Smith played the Kelly Garrett in the "Charlie's Angels" series. She has had many roles on the TV shows and in movies and some of her works are in projects like "Christina Cromwell" and "The District". She featured in a TV film titled "Bridal Wave" in 2015. She is one of the very first actresses to design and release her own clothing lines.

Uma Thurman

Although Uma Thurman may have discovered her love for acting while in middle school, her career began on the modeling scene. She featured on the covers of some magazines before she caught the attention of some casting directors. She appeared in three films, one of them was "Dangerous Liaisons". She carried on her acting career all through the '80s. She has numerous acting credits to her name, she has won a Golden Globe Award and she has been nominated for numerous awards.

Christie Brinkley

This supermodel began her career as a cover girl for a Sports Illustrated swimsuit magazine. She was featured on the covers of 3 issues in the '70s, which is a record for the magazine. She held the spot of the Cover Girl for 25years, pushing ahead to receive other campaigns too. Her last appearance on the cover of the Sports Illustrated magazine is one she wouldn't forget soon; she appeared on this particular cover with her two daughters.

Victoria Principal

She portrayed the role of Maria Elena in 1972's "The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean" long before she played the role of Pamela Barnes Ewing on the famous nighttime soap opera, "Dallas". Her role on Dallas was from 1978-1987 and she continued on her acting in other TV shows and movies. She featured in "Titans" in 2001, after which she became more involved with philanthropic and charity work and her area of interest is in animal rights and protection.

Morgan Fairchild

Morgan Fairchild, famously known as the stunning Patsy Ann McClenny, featured on the TV soap "Search of Tomorrow" between 1973 and 1977, where she played the role of Jennifer Pace. This role gave her the boost she needed to become a famous star and it also gave her the opportunity to feature on TV shows like "Dallas", "Happy Days" and "Kojak". The phrase of the '70s was "Cuchi-cuchi" as actress and singer, Charo, used her exuberant mannerisms to make the country smile. Although she's not active on the entertainment front as she was in the early 2000s, she occasionally makes an appearance, as she did with her role in 2017 TV film, “Sharknado 5: Global Swarming.”

Kate Jackson

She is also one of the "Charlie's Angels" alumni. She portrayed the role of the adorable and resilient Sabrina Duncan in the '70s hit show. She left the show after the 3rd season so that she could star on some other TV shows such as Scarecrow and Mrs. King" and "Baby Boom". She is now a writer and it is believed that she would be releasing her memoirs in 2020.

Beth Chapman

Denver's own Beth Chapman was the youngest ever bail bondsman in the history of the state of Colorado. She was 29 years old. Lyssa Chapman, her step-daughter, later broke this record. She is most renowned for her roles on "Dog the Bounty Hunter" and "Dog and Beth: On the Hunt". After battling cancer for years, she declared that she was cancer free in 2017.

Danielle Colby

Danielle Colby was brought up in a family of Jehovah Witnesses; however, she turned her back against the religious doctrines and began her own studio and parody troupe. She loved picking very much, and when she met Mike Wolfe, he enlisted her for the show called "American Pickers". The showing is now on season 18 and Danielle is still in the thick of it.

Katharine Ross

Katherine Ross already had two significantly acclaimed performances; the first was for her role on "Bitch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" and the second was for her role on "The Graduate". She became even more popular in the 1970s with roles in films like "The Stepford Wives" and "The Betsy". She and cowboy actor, Sam Elliott, got married in 1984. They have a daughter together and they are still married today.

Raquel Welch

Can anyone actually forget the fur bikini that she wore in the movie, "One Million Years BC"? We doubt that. She would forever be one of the sexiest Hollywood actresses of all time. Raquel Welch featured in the 1973 movie, "The Three Musketeers", a role which earned her a Golden Globe Award. She is also known for her business acumen and she has written a book and released a video series called "Total Beauty and Fitness Program". She recently made an appearance on the screen in 2017 where the played the role of Celeste in the movie, "How to be a Latin Lover".

Ali MacGraw

Prior to her role as Jenny in the 1970's movie, "Love Story", Ali McGraw began her career in acting by working on the advertisement scene. She went on to feature in only three films after her role in "Love Story". The movies are "Players", The Getaway" and "Players". Although her last onscreen appearance was in the movie "Glam" in 1997, she reunited with Ryan O'Neal, her costar on "Love Story", to feature in a stage release of “Love Letters.”

Cheryl Ladd

She too is a "Charlie's Angels" alumni and she played the part of Kris Munroe on the TV show in 1977. She went on to the music scene and released "Think it Over" in 1978. Although she was never on the top 10, she continued her career in music and she released three more albums. She recently appeared on-screen in 2016, in the TV mini-series, “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.”

Mandrell Sisters

She released her very first hit track "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed" in 1978. She released another hit song titled "If Loving You is Wrong, I don't want to be Right" shortly after the first. Some TV producers resolved to make money of her success, so they offered her a TV show. The show "Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters" aired for two seasons. Although the sisters prefer to be left out of the spotlight, they are active for many different charities.

Bo Derek

The movie that brought Bo onto the circuit of Hollywood was the 1977 movie, "Orca". However, the first role that comes to mind when most fans think about her would most likely be her iconic jog on the beach in the 1979 movie, "10". She is still very active on the acting scene and she recently featured alongside Danny Glover and Billy Burke in the 2013 movie, "Highland Park". She is a dedicated activist for organizations such as Richard Branson’s Wild Aid and she is additionally very supportive for many disabled veterans’ organizations.

Maureen McCormick

Marcia, Marcia, Marcia. She will forever be remembered for her part on "The Brady Bunch", where she played the role of Marcia Brady. She has been involved in a few spin-offs, sequels and TV films. She has also made appearances on some reality shows including, "I'm a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!" and "Dancing with the Stars". Her last on-screen appearance was on the 2017 drama, "The Neighborhood".

Loni Anderson
