The Coolest Couple Of The Year Since 1972

Who was the coolest couple of the year? Who did you look at and say "wow... that looks like true love" but found yourself saying it over and over? I'm sure you would love to see these couples go on with theri love, wouldn't you?

So, were you and your partner more of a Lady Di and Prince Charles type of duo, or did you identify as Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt stans? Of course, you remember the famous lovebirds who dominated the tabloids during the months when you were just itching to get out from under your parents' roof, so we thought about arranging them all in one spot so you could take a trip down memory lane.

Here's a look back at those glamorous couples whose love felt just as real and intense as your crush from chem class. Continue down the time-tunnel of love:

1972: Carly Simon and James Taylor

Musical power couple Carly and James got married in 1972, just a year after they began dating. But Carly had her sights set on James way before they first met.

“I saw his picture on the cover of TIME magazine when I was walking home with my sister and I said, ‘I’m gonna marry that man,’" she once revealed to People.

Love comes to an end

They had two children together, but ultimately the couple filed for divorce after a decade of marriage thanks to Taylor's infidelities and a heroin addiction... unfortunately they did not end on the best of terms.

1973: Ali MacGraw and Steve McQueen

Ali and Steve started dating in 1972 and got married a year later. Despite the couple's glamorous veneer, their relationship was secretly quite rocky.

Secret Trauma

McQueen, titled the "King of cool" at his time, was not only abusive and had constant affairs, but throughout their marriage he would not allow McGraw to work, even offering to pay her not to take roles she was offered.

"There were many times that were just wonderful, and there were many times that were just ghastly,” Ali explained to People. The couple got divorced in 1977.

1974: Anjelica Huston and Jack Nicholson

Anjelica and Jack began dating in the early '70s, and their on-and-off relationship spanned the next 17 years.  While Nicholson was emotional and caring about Anjelica throughout their relationship, he was also constantly busy with flings outside their relationship.

Shocking Surprise

Anjelica wrote in her memoir that Jack was constantly unfaithful, and she finally left him when he disclosed that was expecting a child with another woman.

Still, the couple was a sought-after staple in the 1970s and '80s Hollywood scene.

1975: Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton

One of the most famous couples of the 20th century, Liz and Richard met in 1962, and famously—despite the fact that they were each married to other people—began an extravagant love affair.

Their first marriage lasted from 1964-1974, and they tied the knot again for less than a year in 1975.

A deep and fierce love affair

These two captivated millions with their on-again, off-again relationship that was more entertaining than any film. Even after *both* of their marriages were over, the two remained friends and are considered the great loves of each other's lives.

1977: Sally Field and Burt Reynolds

Sally and Burt met on the set of their film Smokey and the Bandit and dated for five years. Burt reportedly proposed to Sally on numerous occasions, though the two never got married.

Sally told The New York Times that the relationship was “not without loving and caring, but really complicated and hurtful to me.”

An important part of life

Years later, in a 2015 Vanity Fair profile, Burt still referred to Sally as "the love of my life."

Despite the problems, Sally views her time with Burt as transformative and important,  “I've always thought of him rather nostalgically. ... He was a very important part of my life, but for a tiny little part of my life,” she told NPR.

1978: Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger

Jerry and Mick, one of the most glamorous couples of the '70s and '80s, were each iconic in their own right with her gorgeous blonde locks and his rockstar attitude people could not get enough of these two.

Comes to an end

The couple got married in 1990, but their 23-year long relationship was plagued with infidelity on Mick's part, and after having four children together, they split in 1999.

1979: Diane Keaton and Warren Beatty

Diane and Warren started dating in the late '70s, and then did what many young-and-in-love stars tend to do: They made a movie together. While their relationship didn't last, Keaton's admiration of her former flame did.

Marriage Ultimatum

Though they co-starred in Reds in 1981, their relationship came to an end, in part because Diane wanted to get married (she even gave Warren a marriage ultimatum!) and he did not.

1980: Carrie Fisher and Paul Simon

This celeb couple was together on and off for more than 12 years with one whirlwind relationship.

In the late Fisher's poetic words "The bad thing about my relationship with Paul, was that we were similar animals. Where there should be a flower and a gardener, we were two flowers. In the bright sun. Wilting."

A Psychedelic Ending

Carrie and Paul's 1983 marriage lasted only a year, but they continued to date until a trip to the Amazon, when Carrie had a psychedelic vision that Paul was controlling her, which prompted her to finally call it quits for good.

1981: Lady Diana and Prince Charles

Prince Charles and Lady Diana first met in 1977 when Charles was—wait for it—dating Diana's sister.

They got engaged in 1981 when Diana was 19 and Charles was 32, and as you are probably aware, the engagement caused a total media frenzy with the lovable and gorgeous Diana becoming the favorite royal.

The Tragic Ending

The two got married that same year and had two sons— Prince William and Prince Harry!

Their relationship ended quite tragically, though: Diana and Charles divorced in 1996 after Charles' affair with his now-wife Camilla Parker-Bowles, and a year later, in 1997, Diana was shockingly killed in a car accident.

1982: Brooke Shields and Michael Jackson

Brooke and Michael became close after they met in 1981. The two "dated a lot," Michael told Dateline, and he asked her to marry him multiple times.

The most natural and easy of friendships

In the same interview, Michael also said that Brooke was "one of the loves of my life."

The relationship evolved into a deep platonic bond that, according to MTV, Brooke called "the most natural and easiest of friendships."

She stated, “we just found each other, and we didn’t have to deal with our sexuality.”

1983: Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell

Goldie and Kurt are one of Hollywood's longest lasting couples and have been happily unmarried for the last 35 years. Apparently, avoiding marriage is part of what has kept them together!

The secret to their success

depositphots

According to E! News, Goldie has said, "I would have been long divorced if I ever married " and "there’s something psychological about not being married because it gives you the freedom to make decisions one way or the other. So for me, I chose to stay, and Kurt chose to stay.”

Props to them for doing things their own way!

1984: Sarah Jessica Parker and Robert Downey Jr.

Sarah Jessica and Robert dated from 1984 until 1991, and their relationship allegedly ended because of Robert's struggle with alcohol and drug addiction at the time.

Walking away

Looking back at the relationship, SJP told People that "there was a huge amount of time spent making sure he was okay. At a certain point, I had the courage to say, ‘I’m going to walk away and I’m just going to pray that you don’t die.’"

She added, "I don't regret any of it." For his part, Robert told Howard Stern that he is thankful for the time he spent with Sarah Jessica, saying, "She provided me a home and understanding."

1985: Christie Brinkley and Billy Joel

Billy and Christie's romance got off to a rocky start because Billy was dating both Christie and her friend, the model Elle Macpherson, at the same time!

Of course, Billy ended up with Christie, and they got married three years later in 1985.

End of a marriage- end of an era

The marriage lasted nine years, and they had one daughter together. Brinkley puts Jorel's infidelity as the reason for their divorce, however, the two remain on good terms.

The years following their divorce Joel wrote and recorded very little, he even claimed 'Christie likes to joke that the end of the marriage spelled the end of my songwriting career.'

1986: Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger

Maria and Arnold met in 1977 and got married nine years later in 1986. They have four kids together and were married for 25 years before the scandal in 2011 that led to Maria filing for divorce.

Quite the scandal

depositphotos

The scandal is that, well, Arnold had fathered a child with the family's longtime housekeeper. The crazy thing is that seven years later, the couple has still not finalized their divorce and neither of them seem to be pushing to make it final!

1987: Demi Moore and Bruce Willis

Demi and Bruce met in 1987 and despite Bruce's reputation for being a drinker and a womanizer, Moore who had already been in rehab for her own drug and alcohol addiction didn't seem to care. The two got married that same year in Las Vegas.

Friends to this day

But even though they hit up the altar relatively quickly, their intuitions were clearly onto something because their marriage lasted for over a decade.

They have three children together and remain friends to this day. Nice.

1988: Rita Wilson and Tom Hanks

Every time Rita and Tom grace the red carpet together hand-in-hand, they remind the world that love can survive in Hollywood.

It all started when they met on the set of the film Volunteers in 1985. Three years later, they were married.

A love that lasted

depositphotos

According to People, Tom is adorably still in awe of their relationship, "We just like each other...I still can’t believe my wife goes out with me."

1989: Elizabeth Hurley and Hugh Grant

Elizabeth and Hugh met in 1987, right as their careers were taking off. After 13 years together, they split in 2000, but the two are still very close.

Elizabeth has said that "he remains my best friend to this day," and Hugh feels the same way.

Godparents

"Now she’s my absolute best friend—number one person I call in a crisis,” he told Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live.

They are even godparents to each other's children. So sweet!

1990: Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise

Nicole and Tom met in 1990 when she auditioned for Days of Thunder (a film they would eventually co-star in).

Nicole told People that when she first saw him, her "jaw dropped." The duo also co-starred in the classic Eyes Wide Shut, and pretty much ruled Hollywood alongside one another.

Religion pulled them apart

depositphotos

After two children which they adopted together, Cruise abruptly ended their marriage without warning in 2001. Many point fingers at some stickiness involving the Church of Scientology and Kidman's refusal to accept the religion as a reason for their sudden split the couple divorced in 2001.

1991: Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp

These two doe-eyes talents, Winona and Johnny started dating in 1989 and famously co-starred in Edward Scissorhands a year later with the whole world becoming obsessed with their sweet romance.

Wino Forever

Despite getting engaged five months after their first date, the couple called it off in 1993, and Depp had to get his 'Winona forever' tattoo altered to say 'Wino forever.' Lol.

1992: Iman and David Bowie

It's hard not to love the love of David and Iman. The model and the rockstar got married in Italy *and* in Switzerland in 1992.

"That she would be my wife, in my head, was a done deal. I'd never gone after anything in my life with such passion in all my life. I just knew she was the one," David told Hello! in 2000.

Together until the end

The couple was together for 26 happy years before David sadly passed away in 2016. Iman has been open about the fact that she never wants to remarry.

1993: Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin

Kim and Alec met on the set of the film The Marrying Man in 1990, and clearly they took the title to heart because three years later they put a ring on it.

Anger management issues

After having one daughter together, the couple split up in 2002 with a very contentious divorce that left Alec with a mandate to attend anger management classes.

He is now remarried to yoga instructor Hilaria Baldwin.

1994: Kate Moss and Johnny Depp

This '90s dream duo started dating in 1994 when Johnny was 31 and Kate was 20.

According to People, Kate said of Johnny, “I knew from the first moment we talked that we were going to be together.”

Insecure Kate

Despite being considered one of the most beautiful women in the world at the time, Moss was always incredibly insecure when it came to her relationship with Depp and felt uncultured next to him.

The glamorous, jet-setting couple lasted four years before the calling it quits in 1998.

1995: Gwyneth Paltrow and Brad Pitt

These blond beauties started dating in 1994, and Brad proposed two years later in 1996.

At one point, the couple even had matching blonde haircuts, prompting everyone to believe that their union was meant to be.

Too good for her

Sadly, however, the pair split a year later. Looking back, Gwyneth now says of the relationship, "I wasn't ready, and he was too good for me."

1996: Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

These two musicians began dating in 1995 after Gwen's band No Doubt opened for Gavin's band Bush.

Nine years later, in 2002, the couple got married and Gwen wore her now-iconic ombré pink wedding dress.

Moved on

depositphotos

The duo stayed together for 13 years, despite quite a few scandals.

They filed for divorce in 2015, and Gwen is now dating her co-star on The Voice, Blake Shelton.

1997: Victoria Beckham and David Beckham

One of the world's most beloved couples, David and Victoria, AKA the soccer star and the Spice Girl, began dating in 1997.

They got engaged a year later and Victoria wore a literal crown to her wedding, fitting since they are basically royalty.

A formidable force

depositphotos

Over the course of their 19-year marriage, they've had four children, and they've become known as one of the sexiest and most fashionable celeb couples in the world.

1998: Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith

Jada and Will have been one of the most solid couples in Hollywood since their 1997 marriage.

Their pet names for each other are "my king" and "my queen," showing their deep respect and love for one another through thick and thin.

Partners in crime

depositphotos

In 2018, Jada opened up about their relationship on the show Sway's Universe, explaining:

"Will and I are family. I am going to hold him down...At the end of the day, that is a man that can rely on me for the rest of his life, period.”

1999: Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe

Reese and Ryan were famously brought together by their cult favorite film Cruel Intentions. But they actually met before that at Rees's 21st birthday when Reese told Ryan upon meeting him "I think you're my birthday present"- talk about balsy!

Friends and co-parents

depositphotos

They got married in 1999 and had two children together before divorcing in 2007.

The two are still on good terms, but so far no word on whether or not Ryan is a fan of Big Little Lies.

2000: Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt

After Jennifer and Brad got married in 2000, they easily could have been crowned prom king and queen of Hollywood. From their blonde locks to their brilliant acting skills, these two were the golden pair.

Still not over it

depositphotos

Their wedding caused an absolute media frenzy (not to mention that the ceremony included literal fireworks), but after seven years of dominating red carpets together, the couple split in 2005 (cough Angelina Jolie cough)

Still a lil sad about it, tbh.

2001: Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake

How could anyone forget this iconic duo? Britney and Justin got together in 1999 and Canadian tuxedos haven't been the same since. (though we definitely could have done without drowning in denim)

Never know the truth behind the split

depositphotos

There were rumors that they split because of infidelity on Britney's part (see: Justin's hit "Cry Me a River") but unfortunately we'll probably never really know what went down between these two.

2002: Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr.

This '90s dream team got married in 2002 after meeting on the set of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and are still going strong 16 years later.

Happily Ever After

depositphotos

On their 13th wedding anniversary, Sarah posted a sweet Instagram with the quote:

"I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me.”

2003: Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey

Jessica and Nick's marriage became a national phenomenon thanks to their 2003 reality show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. They ushered in a whole new genre of romantic reality entertainmet for the world of MTV.

Chicken of fish?

depositphotos

The couple divorced in 2005, but their relationship will live on forever, or at least until we figure out whether tuna is chicken or fish.

2004: Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony

Though Jennifer and Marc first met in 1998, they didn't get married until 2004, after they had been dating for just six months and less than a week after Anthoney's divorce from former wife Dayana Torres was finalized.

Still a team

depositphotos

One thing's for sure: They clearly had a lot of career chemistry, as they performed together at the Grammys, toured together, and co-starred in a film, El Cantante.

After seven years and two kids, the couple filed for divorce. They are still good friends and have worked together on several music projects since their split.

2005: Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi

Ellen and Portia became a couple in 2005, and got married in 2008. As soon as California made it legal for same-sex couples to wed they didn't waste a minute.

The only one wanting Ellen's show to end

depositphotos

Fun fact: Portia's legal name is actually Portia DeGeneres, but she continues to go by de Rossi professionally. Recently it was revealed that Porcia is the only one urging Ellen to stop her talk-show and persue her acting passion, something we vehemently disagree with!

2006: Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban

The two Aussies met in Los Angeles in 2005, married after only months of dating, and now have two kids together. However, it wasn't exactly love at first site and Urban waited four months before he called her!

Keeping the romance alive

depositphotos

Even though the couple has to travel a lot for work, they try not to spend more than five days apart—and when they do, Nicole told InStyle that Keith leaves a love note for her to open every night he's away. Aww!

2007: Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

Bennifer 2.0 began in 2004, and the couple got engaged—and pregnant—the next year.

Ben and Jen became a Hollywood fixture, staying together through two children and Ben's rising stardom.

A caring ex

They ultimately signed divorce papers in 2018 though, reportedly because of Ben's struggle with alcohol addiction. But it's clear Jen still deeply cares for her ex and was the one to stage an intervention this year when Ben was struggling with his addictions once again. What a woman!

2008: Beyoncé and Jay-Z

Bey and Jay got married in 2008 after around eight years of dating.

Despite Beyoncé very publicly airing her grievances with Jay's cheating in the 2016 album Lemonade, the two seem happier than ever and are currently on their second joint On the Run tour.

An Empire

depositphotos

They have three children together (duh) and practically run an empire side by side with an estimated joined net worth of $1.255 billion.

2009: Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen

Isla and Sacha met in 2002 and got married in 2010 after Isla converted to Judaism. The couple has three kids together, and are very happily married today.

Winning the lottery

depositphotos

Case in point: According to Hello!, Isla has said of her relationship, “It’s amazing. It’s like winning the lottery, having a good partner.” We can imagine one winning quality of this duo's relationship is endless laughter

2010: Katy Perry and Russell Brand

Katy and Russell started dating in 2009 and got engaged during a trip India in December of that year, when Russell proposed at a tiger sanctuary.

They got married the next year in a "spiritual ceremony" in India, and their status as Mr. and Mrs. lasted two years, ending partially due to their busy schedules.

No bad feelings

depositphotos

According to Us Weekly, Russell recently said of Katy, “I still feel very warm towards her.

I feel like when I hear about her or see her, ‘Aw there’s that person. There’s that person in the world.’”

2011: Kate Middleton and Prince William

Kate and Will ignited royal wedding mania with their 2011 nuptials. Kate caught her Prince Charming's eye when she modeled in a totally sheer dress for a charity show in college.

A royal love story

depositphotos

And tbh I'm still recovering. The couple began dating in college around 2004, and now their relationship is full of cute children (they have three) and royal engagements.

2012: Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Blake and Ryan met on the set of Green Lantern in 2010, started dating in 2011, and then got married a year later. While it seemed unfair to have to genetically gifted people like this get together, they do it so well we can't help but love them!

Loving and Trolling

The insanely gorgeous couple currently has two children and a passion for trolling each other online. Cute.

2013: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim and Kanye—one of the most famous couples in the world—need no introduction. Kanye admits he had a crush on the reality star forever but waited for when the time was right to make his feelings known.

Still madly in love

They currently have three adorable children and are clearly still crazy about each other. Despite West's questionable antics, Kim always has her man's nack.

2014: Amal and George Clooney

Amal and George started dating in 2013 and tied the knot in Italy in 2014. After years of being a notorious bachelor, with Amal, it seems he finally met his match.

Alma's husband

depositphotos

Regardless of his own fame, George is now introducing himself as "Amal's husband," which—seeing as she's a super-impressive human rights lawyer—seems kinda fair!

2015: Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris

Taylor and Calvin began dating in 2015 and their relationship lasted approximately 15 months.

All the good times

Highlights include Calvin cat-sitting for Taylor, Taylor baking Calvin a one-year anniversary cake, and some drama with Kanye West. Good times!

2016: Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik

Gigi and Zayn got together in 2015 and their relationship has so far included one 'Z' necklace, a couple's music video, a Vogue photo shoot, a breakup, and a reunion.

You know, all of the traditional relationship milestones!

Very much back on

A good way to tell how well their relationship is doing is squeezing through their Instagrams and judging by their recent steamy pics it seems they are right back on.

2017: Chrissy Teigen and John Legend

Chrissy and John have been together ever since they met on the set of one of John's music videos in 2007. That's 11 years for all you people too lazy to do the math!

A hilarious duo

depositphotos

Now they're busy being married and raising two adorable kids together. Chrissy, for her part, is also busy hilariously trolling John on social media.

2018: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
