The Story of the Spikeless Hedgehog

After years of playing Sonic the Hedgehog, I’d always prepared myself for the reality that hedgehogs don’t all wear red trainers and collect gold power rings, or fight world conquerors. What I do know, though, is that they are spiky little fellas. One hedgehog, though, breaks that trend quite relentlessly – he’s more or less a big bald hedgehog!

No Spikes, No Fuss

Little Nelson is the first spikeless hedgehog that I have ever seen. Nobody actually knows why he has no spikes, though; there is no real reasoning for it takin place. He was found by the Foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue team in England. Despite lacking his usual look, though, this awesome little guy has plenty to love.

Treated with extra love and care at the sanctuary, he lives a happy and healthy life despite the problems. According to one member of the group, he must have had spikes at once to survive this long – but nobody knows when, or how, he lost them later. Receiving regular oil massages and other treatments to make sure he gets the care his body needs, this helps him to stay as healthy and as happy as any other hedgehog out there.

Special Treatment

He gets his food brought to him every day, as he can’t go out and forage without his natural protection. This means that he gets to have his food brought straight to him, meaning he gets to live a life of relative luxury compared to all his companions!

While at first I felt quite horrible looking at him wondering what must have happened to him, he seems to be quite happy. The Rescue do a fine job of looking after him, from the look of it, and he can be relatively comfortable just lying around and having a good time all day. If you have any inclination to help out, be sure to check out the FLWR website and see how you can help them out, or even help out little Nelson himself.

Six Superhero Animals Who Saved Lives

These six animals went far beyond their realm of responsibility, saving the lives of the people around them! From dry land to the ocean, these super hero animals came to the rescue just at the right time.

Dedicated Dolphins

Everyone knows dolphins are the friendliest fish out there, but they prove they are life-savers too! When surfer Todd Endri was trying to catch some waves, Endri himself got caught by a Great White Shark. He was wounded, but just as the shark was about to come back for seconds, a group of dolphins created a wall between the helpless surfer and the Great White, allowing him to swim back to shore!

Mandy the Goat

When 78-year-old Australian farmer Noel Osborne slipped on manure while tending to his farm animals, he found himself in quite a sticky situation. Unable to move with a broken hip, he was stuck for 5 days before anyone found him! Luckily Mandy the goat was there who curled up with him at night for body warmth, and gave him her milk to drink.

“Wonder Cat” Saves the Day

When a water pump malfunctioned, and caused carbon monoxide poisoning, the sleeping Keesling family was in trouble. If they had slept through the night in the poisoned house they would have all died. Thanks to their cat Winnie, that is not the case. Winnie rushed to Kathy Keesling’s bed, woke her up, and gave her just enough time to dial 911.

Man’s Ultimate Best Friend

Khan the Doberman Pinscher proved his worth to his new family just days after he arrived when he saved the life of their toddler. Khan was playing on the floor with little Charlotte when he picked her up by the diaper and moved her to the side. Her mother Catherine was appalled to see the dog seemingly act aggressively, but then she saw the King Brown snake which had just bitten Khan, and which would have bitten Charlotte if he hadn’t moved her. Luckily Khan was able to recover after being given anti-venom treatment.

Lions Save the Day

Although one would think lions are the ones harming people, here they were the saviors. An Ethiopian girl had been kidnapped from her village and was being held hostage and abused by four men. Three lions interfered, chasing the men away. Miraculously, police who arrived on the scene found the girl in total shock, yet she was unharmed by the big cats who had saved her life.

Mama Gorilla

When, in 1906, an overly curious 3-year-old climbed the fence of a gorilla enclosure, fell 18 feet to the surface below, and was rendered unconscious, onlookers thought it was the end. However, Binti the Gorilla who lived in the enclosure cradled the boy and carried him safely to the entrance of the enclosure where he handed him over to EMT’s. all this was done while Binti herself carried her baby on her back. Turns out the maternal nature extends to all species!

China’s Major Efforts to Save the Elephants

Ivory trade is a very controversial topic that China finally decided to take control of. The trade industry involves removing the tusks of major animals including the hippopotamus and the most notorous African and Asian elephants. This is an industry that dates back to the times of the colonization of Africa in which slaves were forced to carry the tusks of the elephants in the scorching heat. The purpose of these tusks were mainly for piano keys and the wealth they could provide. Unfortunately, through this unethical type of trade, more than half a million Elephants and other animals have been slaughtered in the process. Although historical, this industry has remained a large one with China being a major player, but soon they will play no part.

After being a major power in the Ivory Trade Industry, China’s decision to end its practice will save many elephants, especially the ones who struggle in Africa. An estimate of 100,000 elephants have been killed in the past ten years, as China’s “white gold” (elephant tusks) continued to be produced by the masses. China’s change of heart is one of the most surprising efforts as China’s decision will affect many countries around the world that are involved in the trade.

Many wildlife reservists have been calling the decision a huge blessing for the elephants around the world. As China leaves, so does a major part of the Ivory Trade business. Since China has been the one calling the shots for generations, the industry will weaken, and lives of thousands upon thousands of elephant’s lives will be saved. After having held many protests, many animal rights activists can head to sleep, knowing that their efforts have served a purpose beyond a picket sign and a statement. For those who desired the end of the Ivory Trade, they see this is the first step and a sigh of a breath for the Elephants of Africa.

The Incredible Story of the Dog Who Risked His Life to Save His Companion

Hearing the term “man’s best friend” always leads us to imagine a family with their golden retriever by a nice picket fence from the 1950’s; that is always a nice picture, but this story is in a cuter context. What is trending around the world right now is the story of two dogs, Lucy and Panda, who were stuck on the railway for two days in the freezing cold. Lucy had been injured while the two were seemingly traveling through the woods, and she could not move. The rest of the story from here gets even more adorable than the start.

It is quite clear that the railroad is a danger zone for any passerby, canine or human, and staying on the tracks could harm and even kill anyone stuck in the pathway. The Pet Rescue Report had stated very bluntly that Lucy was most likely injured by a train passing by, leaving her nearly crushed. In any form of instinct, most would flee the scene in fear of danger, but Panda stayed right beside his girlfriend Lucy and protected her from the trains speeding by cuddling her and holding her down with his body.

“He kept her warm for two days under the constant threat of danger! I don’t know what to call it: instinct, love, friendship, attachment. I only know this: not every human is capable of this. We should all learn from it,”

These were the words of Daniel Malafeev who found the two dogs, took pictures, and shared their viral story worldwide. There were even further reports about how many people tried to rescue Lucy and her companion Panda, but Panda would not let anyone touch her as he tried to protect her from any harms way. This story is so touching that it beats the scene of “Lady and the Tramp” where Lady and her boyfriend Tramp share spaghetti and meatballs and the two end up kissing. If anyone could learn anything from this story, the lesson would be that no matter what, always have your friend’s back, even if it means freezing with them for two days straight.
