The Long Hollywood Tradition Between Mega Directors

With Avengers: Infinity War beginning to clean up at the box office, it’s no surprise that it’s been a major showbiz talking point. More importantly, though, it’s become a movie franchise so big that it smashed the likes of Star Wars. With the 19th and arguably best edition of the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking in as much as $640m worldwide, it’s become a major hit across the globe. Indeed, it even blows away “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which hit around $529m worldwide.

As impressive as these figures are, more impressive is the fact that it’s allowed us to peek behind the Hollywood curtain for a moment. With both MCU and the masters at Lucasfilm both under the Disney banner today, it’s no surprise that this little tidbit has come out in the public. Lucasfilm’ President, Kathleen Kennedy, sent a wonderfully gracious note to Marvel to congratulate their achievement, completed with Rey passing over a lightsabre to Iron Man in celebration.

Indeed, this has apparently been a widespread Hollywood tradition. It started with George Lucas the old “Star Wars” director and his mate Steven Spielberg. Starting in 1977 when Spielberg used a full-page Variety advertisement to congratulate Lucas’ on Star Wars beating “Jaws” at the Box Office. It showed R2-D2, the lovable Star Wars droid, catching Jaws himself on his fishing hook.

Since then, we’ve seen some truly special ones come from both groups. For example, when “E.T.” became the superb hit that it was, Lucas responded with an ad of some of Star War’ main heroes lifting E.T. up into the air with a #1 sign.

This also happened in the 1990s, with ET passing on the crown to R2D2 When The prequels proved that Star Wars was here to stay.

Next time happened when James Cameron’ Titanic beat Star Wars. Gorge printed an add in the papers. It is actually the most elaborate one ever showing almost all of the Star Wars characters going down with the ship.

Later on, the Box Office crown went to another Cameron production – Avatar. So it was no surprise that he didn’t do anything then. But he did disappoint when Marvel’s The Avengers took the crown and didn’t post anything (He is known as someone who doesn’t like superhero films).

Good thing Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios is a good sport and decided to revive the tradition when Jurrasic World suppressed the Avengers in 2015 by a mere million dollars. This time though the tradition moved from the pages of the newspapers straight to social media.

Of course, Universal didn’t stay quiet when Star Wars took the crown for the third time, this time shattering the previous record by a staggering 40 million. The poster shows T-rex putting a gold medal on BB-8. Whats nice about it is also the fact that Steven Spielberg that began this tradition, was part of the congratulating team.

Nice to see the biggest directors out there congratulating each other and making Hollywood a friendlier place.

7 Astonishing Facts About The Amazing Stephen Hawking

Professor Stephen William Hawking was born on 8th January 1942 (exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo) in Oxford, England.

1. His parents’ house was in north London but during the Second World War, Oxford was considered a safer place to have babies. When he was eight his family moved to St. Albans, a town about 20 miles north of London. At the age of eleven, Stephen went to St. Albans School and then on to University College, Oxford (1952); his father’s old college.

2. Stephen wanted to study mathematics although his father would have preferred medicine. Mathematics was not available at University College, so he pursued physics instead. After three years and not very much work, he was awarded a first class honors degree in natural science.

In October 1962, Stephen arrived at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge to do research in cosmology, there being no-one working in that area in Oxford at the time. His supervisor was Dennis Sciama, although he had hoped to get Fred Hoyle who was working in Cambridge. After gaining his PhD (1965) with his thesis titled ‘Properties of Expanding Universes’, he became, first, a research fellow (1965) then Fellow for Distinction in Science (1969) at Gonville & Caius college.

In 1966 he won the Adams Prize for his essay ‘Singularities and the Geometry of Space-time’. Stephen moved to the Institute of Astronomy (1968), later moving back to DAMTP (1973), employed as a research assistant, and published his first academic book, The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time, with George Ellis. During the next few years, Stephen was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (1974) and Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Scholar at the California Institute of Technology (1974).

3. He became a Reader in Gravitational Physics at DAMTP (1975), progressing to Professor of Gravitational Physics (1977). He then held the position of Lucasian Professor of Mathematics (1979-2009). The chair was founded in 1663 with money left in the will of the Reverend Henry Lucas who had been the Member of Parliament for the University. It was first held by Isaac Barrow and then in 1669 by Isaac Newton.  Stephen is currently the Dennis Stanton Avery and Sally Tsui Wong-Avery Director of Research at DAMTP.

4. Professor Stephen Hawking has worked on the basic laws which govern the universe. With Roger Penrose he showed that Einstein’s general theory of relativity implied space and time would have a beginning in the Big Bang and an end in black holes (1970). These results indicated that it was necessary to unify general relativity with quantum theory, the other great scientific development of the first half of the 20th century. One consequence of such a unification that he discovered was that black holes should not be completely black, but rather should emit ‘Hawking’ radiation and eventually evaporate and disappear (1974).

Another conjecture is that the universe has no edge or boundary in imaginary time. This would imply that the way the universe began was completely determined by the laws of science. Recently Stephen has been working with colleagues on a possible resolution to the black hole information paradox, where debate centres around the conservation of information.

5. His many publications include The Large Scale Structure of Spacetime with G F R Ellis, General Relativity: An Einstein Centenary Survey, with W Israel, and 300 Years of Gravitation, with  Israel. Among the popular books, Stephen Hawking has published are his best seller A Brief History of TimeBlack Holes and Baby Universes and Other EssaysThe Universe in a Nutshell, The Grand Design and My Brief History.

6. Professor Stephen Hawking has thirteen honorary degrees. He was awarded CBE (1982), Companion of Honour (1989) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2009). He is the recipient of many awards, medals and prizes, most notably the Fundamental Physics prize (2013), Copley Medal (2006) and the Wolf Foundation prize (1988). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

7. In 1963 Stephen was diagnosed with ALS, a form of Motor Neurone Disease, shortly after his 21st birthday. In spite of being wheelchair-bound and dependent on a computerised voice system for communication, Stephen continues to combine family life (he has three children and three grandchildren) with his research into theoretical physics, in addition to an extensive programme of travel and public lectures. He still hopes to make it into space one day.

The Five Worst Anthem Performances (Did someone say Fergie?)

Every nation has a song that everyone knows (or at least – should know). It’s the song that is supposed to reflect the culture, history, and identity of a nation – The anthem.

It’s often sung at large events, and you should know that it’s National Anthem day today! (3rd March). On this day one can learn the history and importance of their national anthem and also sing it. Sometimes the anthem can come out not as intended. Here are five worst performances of the American anthem at special events.

Ameican Anthem at an Ice Hockey Match 2004

The American national anthem was sung by Caroline Marcil on a hockey match between USA and Canada in 2004. She started with what she thought was a perfect tune, but after a few seconds, she released this wasn’t going so well so she stopped and apologized. It was a lyrical mishap and a vocal disaster combined.

But sadly enough she didn’t get her own hint, and started over. So she stopped again. But instantly comes back again and bam! She falls. This couldn’t get worse.

Fergie at NBA All-Star Game 2018

The anthem was performed by the very well-known singer-songwriter, Grammy Award winner Fergie at the NBA All Star game in 2018. Fergie started singing the anthem in her melodious opera voice. All of a sudden she started stretching the words and raised her tone.

Meanwhile, the NBA players were losing their patience as her voice became unbearable. The sigh of relief was seen all over the place when the song was finished.

Carl Lewis National Anthem, 1993

Carl Lewis is an Olympic athlete who performed the National Anthem at a net ball game in 1993. However, there is a reason he stuck to sports and not singing. After failing once, he said: “I’ll make up for that” but fails again. The crowed is seen laughing at his voice as he makes a fool out of himself.

Anthem at Jack Murphy Stadium, 1990

Roseanne Barr sang America’s national anthem at a baseball game on 26th July 1990. She started screaming the anthem and eventually started laughing at her own voice during the song. The crowd cheered, made fun, laughed and at last was thankful it ended. She knew how it sounded and left the stadium like a boss.

Michael Bolton Sings The Anthem, 2006

Michael Bolton started singing the anthem at a prestigious ceremony on January 2006. He starts off confidently, everything was going smoothly but suddenly he stopped. The crows goes “boo”. He looks at lyrics written on his hand and goes on. The tune he was singing to was something he made up. How can one possibly forget the National Anthem?

Happy National Anthem Day!
