Dog Discovers 13,000 Year Old Mammoth Bone

I spend a lot of energy commanding my dog to stop digging in the backyard. After this story, maybe I will just allow him to dig, he might find a treasure in my backyard. In this case, the little dog discovered something spectacular and of huge scientific importance.

The dog, a Labrador retriever, lived in Whidbey Island, Washington with its owner. It loved to dig, and in September, the Labrador’s efforts paid off with the discovery of a 13,000-year-old mammoth fossil. At first, it was not clear what the object was, but the scent excited the dog. It was like the dog knew it had unearthed something of a great mystery.

The object was analyzed, and it later turned out to be a mammoth tooth. The dog’s owner Kirk Lacewell was excited about the discovery, and the potential of finding more fossils in his backyard.

Lacewell confirmed he knew when the dog named Scout discovered the fossil, but at that time it looked like a piece of rock. Scout had other thoughts, he played with the discovery and did not discard it; Scout carefully left the mammoth fossil at a location it could be seen by Lacewell the next day. A closer look revealed the object had the features of a bone. Lacewell washed it and realized that he was holding something that needed to be further examined by professionals.

The pictures of the bone were sent to the scientists at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum. They examined its features and determined what it was, and its age was estimated. Lacewell had read about such discoveries before but never imagined he will be the person to make such a finding. He was in possession of a mammoth’s tooth, it was incredible.

At the Burke Museum, it was confirmed that there had been so many other fossils of woolly mammoths discovered in different parts of the Whidbey Island. This indicates that many years ago the Island was home to hundreds of these creatures. The unique composition of their bones made it possible to be preserved for many years. The woolly mammoths are thought to have gone extinct after the last Ice Age which happened about 11,000 years ago.

It is not known if Lacewell plans to sell his mammoth tooth. For now, it hangs on his living room mantle, where he and other visitors can admire the tooth. There have been so many discoveries in the area, so museums are not particularly interested in purchasing the tooth because they have so many already. However, it helps to know that neighbors and friends will not have to make a trip to the museum if they want to see what a mammoth’s tooth looks like. All it takes is a visit to Lacewell’s home.

Traffic Comes To A Halt As Swan Family Crosses The Road

Animals and roads usually don’t mix. It’s not something you see every day. But when that happens, we always have a witness to capture that amazing moment when they do. While most animals avoid humans and roads, some gutsy swans recently threw caution to the wind and decided to do some walking.

Why did the herd of swans cross the street? So that they can be caught on video and become an Internet sensation! A swan family crosses the road in Copenhagen, Denmark in this awesome clip. Thanks to everyone who helped make sure they were able to cross safely! Such model citizens! Soon enough, one by one they start crossing and the cars stop for these feathery pedestrians!

They look like the Beatles on that crosswalk, only without the flare pants. If you are wondering why they didn’t just fly across, here’s an idea. Walking uses far less energy than flying. Conserving energy for fleeing danger and long migrations help them survive. Swans tend to walk to their feeding site from water. Since swans are grazing animals, they will do more walking than flying.

It’s really interesting to see all the people and all the cars near this family because even though swans are so gracious animals they aren’t the friendliest of creatures! It’s adorable to watch now, but it’s a good thing that these drivers were paying attention and let these little guys go! It’s good to know that we have such good drivers that pay attention to the road and didn’t disturb this big family making it to the other side!

Swans are close relatives to geese and ducks. There are approximately seven species of swans. There are the Black swan, Tundra swan, Mute swan, Black-necked swan, Trumpeter swan, the Bewick’s swan and the Whistle swan. Interesting, right?

Often seen gliding across lakes, the swan has long represented elegance and refinement. Swans are herbivores. Swans feed principally on sea-going vegetation, with their long necks enabling them to feast upon plants developing on river beds. They likewise eat little animals, for example, mollusks that stick to the vegetation, and little fish, frogs, and worms. Swans likewise will eat in fields, eating grass on the off chance that it is accessible.

Did you know that swans can sleep on water and also on the ground? They can sleep while standing on one leg or while floating on water. Swans have their moments of aggression. So if you see a swan mother with her children it’s better to stay away from them and let them pass or let them do what they need to do because they are very protective of the little ones. So cool!

Happy Birthday! Here’s a Kidney to Save Your Life

“I want that one – no, not that one – THAT one!”

“Mommy where is my helicopter?”

“You said you would get it! Not fair!”

For any parent, these typical whines and shouts will be all-too familiar. The wonderful lack of maturity shown by a child when it comes to birthday gifts can be impressive in its petulance. However, for any parent who has seen their child act in such a poor manner to their birthday gifts, it might be time to show them the story of Henry Whitacre. Henry, 4, was in need of a lot of help – he required a kidney.

With damaged and weak kidneys, young Henry has to go for dialysis as his kidneys are unable to do the job that is needed to keep his body nice and safe. At the Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, Riley enjoys a wonderful game of basketball with the nurses from his crib, looking like a child who is completely free of pain or fear.

The poor child suffered from a bladder condition from birth, and it stopped his kidneys from developing properly in utero. This meant that he was left with a serious renal disease from birth, and spent a huge amount of time in intensive care. For four days a week, Riley undergoes four hours’ worth of treatment. Larger than life despite being just three feet, the little one was in need of serious help – this could not go on forever.

On July 18th, he celebrated his birthday – turning 4. He enjoyed some time with his nurses and with his family, and also got to enjoy two new toys. One of them, a Mr. Potato Head from the Toy Story franchise. The other? A kidney.

A Life Changing Experience

Emily Jones and Kevin Whitacre, the happy parents of this amazing child, decided to reach out for help to find a kidney via social media. And old school friend called Colleen Carnes got in touch, and as former best friends they managed to hit it off once again after quite some time without talking. According to Emily: “There’s not a childhood memory that I have that doesn’t have her in it,”

While they drifted a bit after High School, they maintained long-distance friendship via Facebook and spoke from time to time. After sending out a “raw” plea for help via Facebook, she found a message in her inbox from Carnes, saying: “Hey, I talked to your donor (coordinator), I’m a match, send me the paperwork to start the testing.”

“I kind of knew then that this is who is going to give her kidney to my kid. It’s surreal for me to think about the fact that I have a child that requires all this. But to know that somebody else is willing to step in and say ‘I want to give you this gift,’ I don’t think the reality has completely sunk in.”

It’s an amazing story and a hugely positive turn after many donors simply did not work out. The little one then underwent his surgery under the steady hand of Dr. William Goggins, who has performed over 2,000 transplants of kidneys – though none quite like this one!

Since Henry is so small, and his long-term history of abdominal surgery so far, the little one was going to be a challenge to operate on. However, by 5:20PM, Henry had his kidney and was well on the way to being happier, healthier and – crucially – out of that hospital bed.

It’s expected that, throughout this life he will need as many as three kidneys – with the average kidney transplant lasting 12-15 years. While there is a shortage, the creation of an artificial kidney is underway: by the time he needs his second kidney, the hope is that this tech will be available.

Get better soon, Henry – we’re cheering for you!

Watch: Grumpy Great Dane Vs. Owner. LOL

We all have that special nook in the house that is ours and no one else’s. It is the place we would like to curl ourselves into a ball in and just lay until the end of time, or at least until our problems or the bad weather pass us by.

Dogs are very much like us in that manner. Our loving pets, too, have a comfortable nest where they love to sit and wait for us to show them some love. We might give them the most comfortable dog beds or even let them sleep on down feathers, but they would still climb on our beds or sleep on the cat bed when we turn our attention to something else.

Unfortunately for us, they don’t feel like they should share their bed with anyone else. Their name is written with a magical marker on it and hell would freeze over before they let us get comfy. This is what happens when you decide to steal the bed of a Great Dane canine. Owners beware and learn from this example. Check out this Great Dane’s reaction when he realizes that some has taken his most prized possession – the bed!

Apparently, Henry’s bed is his one and only true love. Check out what happens when his owner tries to sleep in his cozy spot! Hilarious!

Poor pooch! Henry the “tough” great Dane loses his mind when he fails to remove his owner from his bed. Apparently, owner took Henry’s place and is nicely tucked into the warm doggy bed. The moment Henry realizes that his bed is occupied by his owner, he tries his best to remove the owner and reclaim his spot!

Watch how determined this huge pooch is to reclaim his bed from his owner! He uses his paws and muzzle to try and remove the owner from his cozy nest! However, it’s to no avail since his owner won’t move a muscle! Henry, desperate as he is, has nothing else to do but wait until his owner decides to leave his bed!

Moments later, Henry throws a temper tantrum and urges the man to leave his precious nest and find another place to rest. It is hilarious how this gentle giant doesn’t engage in fierce play and doesn’t use aggression to reclaim his place, but politely asks his owner to leave his spot! How adorable!

The term Great Dane often symbolizes the gangly and troublesome Marmaduke ruining the neighbor’s yard, or Shaggy’s clumsy canine companion in a Scooby Doo mystery, cowering or devouring everything in sight! However, even though the Great Dane delivers a protective visual deterrent, this breed is actually very friendly and fantastic with kids. As they grow and grow, they live up to the attribute ‘the tallest dogs on the planet’.

The Story of the Spikeless Hedgehog

After years of playing Sonic the Hedgehog, I’d always prepared myself for the reality that hedgehogs don’t all wear red trainers and collect gold power rings, or fight world conquerors. What I do know, though, is that they are spiky little fellas. One hedgehog, though, breaks that trend quite relentlessly – he’s more or less a big bald hedgehog!

No Spikes, No Fuss

Little Nelson is the first spikeless hedgehog that I have ever seen. Nobody actually knows why he has no spikes, though; there is no real reasoning for it takin place. He was found by the Foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue team in England. Despite lacking his usual look, though, this awesome little guy has plenty to love.

Treated with extra love and care at the sanctuary, he lives a happy and healthy life despite the problems. According to one member of the group, he must have had spikes at once to survive this long – but nobody knows when, or how, he lost them later. Receiving regular oil massages and other treatments to make sure he gets the care his body needs, this helps him to stay as healthy and as happy as any other hedgehog out there.

Special Treatment

He gets his food brought to him every day, as he can’t go out and forage without his natural protection. This means that he gets to have his food brought straight to him, meaning he gets to live a life of relative luxury compared to all his companions!

While at first I felt quite horrible looking at him wondering what must have happened to him, he seems to be quite happy. The Rescue do a fine job of looking after him, from the look of it, and he can be relatively comfortable just lying around and having a good time all day. If you have any inclination to help out, be sure to check out the FLWR website and see how you can help them out, or even help out little Nelson himself.

French Bulldog Overcomes His Fears and You Won’t Believe How

Everyone loves dogs for a great reason. The way they express their emotions and fears, as well as love for their owners brings our hearts joy and laughter is something beyond human nature. Not only that, they will always have it in their instincts to protect their own: family, furry friends, and themselves. Now, in contrast, we all fear the famous ocean predator, the shark. So, combine a dog’s need to protect it’s owner, with the energy of a dangerous predator (the shark), and you get one of the most funny situations that you could truly ever imagine. A dog having to face its fears in order to protect its owner, from a plastic shark toy.

sharktoy1

Swayze the French Bulldog already shows her attachment to her family by following them to the bathroom and waiting outside the door anxious to see them come back. So, her owner decided to play a trick on the adorable creature and see how she would respond. She ended up taking a shark toy from the bathtub, and began to flash its teeth at Swayze, so to see how far the poor thing would go, either away or inside to defeat the plastic predator.

The YouTube video description had said the following:

“This is my 3 year old French bulldog, her name is Swayze. She enjoys stalking me outside of the bathroom. While I was cleaning up my sons bath toys, I picked up a shark and she went nuts. I had to grab the camera to capture this fun moment. She’s not usually so jumpy, but bouncy she is! Enjoy.”

Although provocative, this video proved itself to be a viral and adorable one, that most people around the world are sharing it and writing about it. Talk about a funny, cute situation indeed!
