Dog Discovers 13,000 Year Old Mammoth Bone

I spend a lot of energy commanding my dog to stop digging in the backyard. After this story, maybe I will just allow him to dig, he might find a treasure in my backyard. In this case, the little dog discovered something spectacular and of huge scientific importance.

The dog, a Labrador retriever, lived in Whidbey Island, Washington with its owner. It loved to dig, and in September, the Labrador’s efforts paid off with the discovery of a 13,000-year-old mammoth fossil. At first, it was not clear what the object was, but the scent excited the dog. It was like the dog knew it had unearthed something of a great mystery.

The object was analyzed, and it later turned out to be a mammoth tooth. The dog’s owner Kirk Lacewell was excited about the discovery, and the potential of finding more fossils in his backyard.

Lacewell confirmed he knew when the dog named Scout discovered the fossil, but at that time it looked like a piece of rock. Scout had other thoughts, he played with the discovery and did not discard it; Scout carefully left the mammoth fossil at a location it could be seen by Lacewell the next day. A closer look revealed the object had the features of a bone. Lacewell washed it and realized that he was holding something that needed to be further examined by professionals.

The pictures of the bone were sent to the scientists at the University of Washington’s Burke Museum. They examined its features and determined what it was, and its age was estimated. Lacewell had read about such discoveries before but never imagined he will be the person to make such a finding. He was in possession of a mammoth’s tooth, it was incredible.

At the Burke Museum, it was confirmed that there had been so many other fossils of woolly mammoths discovered in different parts of the Whidbey Island. This indicates that many years ago the Island was home to hundreds of these creatures. The unique composition of their bones made it possible to be preserved for many years. The woolly mammoths are thought to have gone extinct after the last Ice Age which happened about 11,000 years ago.

It is not known if Lacewell plans to sell his mammoth tooth. For now, it hangs on his living room mantle, where he and other visitors can admire the tooth. There have been so many discoveries in the area, so museums are not particularly interested in purchasing the tooth because they have so many already. However, it helps to know that neighbors and friends will not have to make a trip to the museum if they want to see what a mammoth’s tooth looks like. All it takes is a visit to Lacewell’s home.

Studies Show Owning A Dog Can Increase Longevity!

For years, we’ve known that dogs can have a massive, positive effect on our health, our mind-set and our mood. While particularly devilish dogs might feel like they test us in the wrong way sometimes, it’s no doubt that the majority of dogs are great animals to spend time with. However, a recent study that was carried out shows that, according to the results, we’re likely to live longer if we can spend time around a dog long-term.

Incredible Results

A Swedish study was carried out, taking in around 3.5m people in Sweden aged 40-80. There, the study followed them for a whopping 12 years; the results were pretty damn conclusive, too. It showed that those who had lived with a dog – even if they were single – were 33% less likely to die of ‘all causes’, while 36% less likely to die from heart disease. Can you see the link? Walking the dog and going for a walk is obviously going to have a massive effect on our health when we are out and about.

That being said, walking a dog isn’t something that many people will look to do all the time. Even just those odd walks will be enough to keep you going and give that ticker a bit of a chance to get pumping and keep you up, on your feet and busy!

As the newsreader says on the show, doctors might need to start prescribing dogs to people if these kind of stats are anything to go by!

Claims to Back Up The Study

A lot of people find that pets make the more active, more engaged and generally more positive. It can also be a good help for those who need help and support, from extra security to help getting around the place due to visual impairments. So, it’s safe to say that there is significant logical merit in this study.

Indeed, they even talk about how dogs can help with anything from helping autistic people to helping those with anxiety be more active. As the study shows, a dog at home can have a lot of positive effects – even on crazy stuff like the quality of our skin!

So, if you have been looking for something to add to the family and give you all a bit more comfort and maybe a better chance of living for longer, think about getting a dog.

They bring happiness in the home and they also provide us with enough subconscious benefits that, according to the study, we cut down our chances of death by a whole third!

I know I want to live for as long as possible – if you’re the same, maybe consider getting yourself a pup!

The Most Delightful Dog Gets Adopted

When you look online or in magazines/newspapers and see the ‘Dogs for Adoption’ section, you usually find yourself just going “Awww!” at all the awesome photos. Some, though, have greater effect and eventually lead to us wanting to press ahead with the adoption. This is what happened to little Cheech, a dog from the Waller Animal Shelter and Rescue,  who stood out more than most.

A wonderful smile really stood out with the staff and, before long, his image had gone viral – everyone loved his beaming, happy, charming smile!

The shelter posted photos of him online, adding: “Busy day today… we got 3 adopted over the last week and a half. And we got 3 more in today alone. At least we got this guy in, he’s super sweet and knows how to smile when you ask him to.”

His comical and adorable smile immediately got people talking, and before long people were enquiring about how they could take Cheech home with them. Messages flooded in and they then had to choose between who they should let adopt him. With so many options to choose from, he was the most popular dog at the shelter!

They found him a home with a couple known as Carrie and Dusty. Having lost her Shepherd to cancer, Carrie and co. were looking for someone to help them fill that void in their lives. Dusty, their other dog, simply was not eating and was suffering from a deep, profound depression.

Happily, little Cheech now moved home and we are happy to report that Carrie and Dusty are very happy with their new friend for life.

Would you be able to say no to an adorable little face like that? I know for a fact that I most certainly couldn’t.

Tragic Dog Loss Restores Hope in World Through a Miracle

For Chance Patterson, his dog was everything. The East Vail man was struggling in life, though, and struggled to make ends meet despite working his ass off. He worked at a Larkburger chain store and, being the owner of two dogs he was doted on, hated leaving them at home every day while he would go and do double shifts to try and get the money needed for the trio to survive.

So, he decided to spend a little money he might not even have on a doggie day care visit for the dogs. Shortly after picking up Carlitos and Izzy – a German Shepherd and a Pitbull, respectively – from day care one day, a drunk driver hammered into the car on Interstate 70.

A Tragic Accident

Chance was in a bad way, and another driver witnessed the event and brought him back to consciousness. All he cared about, though, was his dogs – sadly, brave Carlitos had died in the incident. Horrified to hear the news, he asked how Izzy was – but Izzy was not there.

Chance asked the man if he could go and look for his dog, as it must be nearby the crash site, Patterson told TODAY. Despite wanting to stay and look for Izzy, Chance needed immediate medical care and was rushed off to hospital to treat a lacerated lung and broken ribs, elbow and leg bones.

The local community heard about Chance’ story and a wonderful, heart-warming community drive was put into place immediately. Tips and reports emerged over and over again about where the dog could be, but very few had any credibility. The owner of the Vail Doggie Day Spa and Lodging, who were the ones watching over the dog, Holly Walthers, was tipped off about the potential whereabouts of the dog. It kept running away from people, though, presumably scared of strangers.

Community Came Together

So, Holly got a tip-off from some cyclists about the dog potentially being spotted and headed out to see if she could bring it in. She found Izzy hanging around the place, and when it noticed the loving face of Holly, Izzy was delighted.

“We immediately called Chance and he was crying and extremely thankful and happy,” Holly explained.
“I had no words,” Patterson remarked. “I was so happy. I thought I’d lost both my dogs.”
While you might expect Patterson to hold some resentment for what had killed the dog he lived so much, he was very mature and magnanimous about what had happened.

“I just want her to know I’m not mad. She’s alive, I’m alive, and that’s all that matters.” He said.
Could you be so forgiving in the face of such tragedy?

Tony Hawks Successor Confirmed – A Dog Called Eroc

Dogs are always impressing us, doing stuff that surpasses even human capabilities at times. One dog, though, took that a whole new level recently. If you like skating, imagine going to a skate park, seeing a large crowd you didn’t quite notice at first, and noticing that everyone is bombastic. Videos are being recorded, people are all over the place with joy. What’s going on? Who is it?

It’s Eroc – it’s a dog. A barking dog that sits on a skateboard and skates better than you or I. With over 30,000 Instagram followers and a fair run of YouTube videos, he’s got a bigger social media profile than most people. It’s a brilliant dog that is a sponsored skater, and it even gets to hang around with the Lionel Messi of skating; Tony Hawk!

Eroc’s Talents

At two and a half, the bold Eroc – from Hackney, London does his stuff to great acclaim. His party piece is essentially to hop on the board with one paw, push it along, hop off, grab the board with his teeth, and then push it around a bit before hopping back on to do the same again. In truth, he’s definitely better than I am at skating.

He can handle bowls though, which is definitely impressive. At just six months he started to pick up the art of skating, and just kind of went with it. According to Clare Maclean and Joel Deason, the two proud owners of this wonderpup, he just went for it.

“I was walking him in the park, and I heard this kid screaming,” Claire explained. Eroc – or Eric – had taken a kids skateboard and was making a comical getaway down a hill with it!

A Natural Born Skater

A skater of two decades himself, Joel was happy to help his little mate out, saying they’ve never had to push him or put him on the board; he just does it himself

Speaking to The Tab, Deason continued to explain how it all came to be.

“[He] made lots of noise, and chewed the edges of the board. It all looked a bit wild to me,” claimed Deason. “The third time he made a dash for the skatepark, and took someone’s board into the bowl, I found myself being roundly booed when I took the board off him and ordered him out.”

Always Improvements Needed

Apparently, his main thing he needs to improve on is his ability to wait his turn! In seriousness, though, his main issue is that he barks non-stop. “He loves to bark at the board every time we take him out,” Claire said.

Well-known in the local area, he’s certainly grown to be well-liked by the local for all the right reasons, even if Claire does admit she finds it a bit embarrassing.
Making sure he never goes overboard due to the breed of dog’s temperature issues, they make sure he keeps his breathing down and stays calm while he skates around. If it was up to him, though, he’d be there all day.

As we mentioned, skate legend Tony Hawk even met the dog when he was a guest at the Clissold Par skateboard, there for a simple low-key event. He apparently called on Eric himself, and they got down to it pretty fast.

“Had the privilege of skating with @erocdog today,” posted Tony Hawk on his own profile. “Caution: only bites when snaked. Best body varials though,” he added.

Whatever comes next for him, we’ll be sure to let you know!

Heroic Couple Refuse to Leave Dogs Behind During Flood

Recently, we’ve seen a lot of heart-warming scenes as people stick around for their pets in times of chaos. Many families refuse to leave behind their animal companions even in the face of impending danger. Joso, Japan, was sadly hit with brutal flash floods in 2016 – neighborhoods were smashed to pieces as the water raged.

The Surprising Companion

Like many couples, the family had seen their home ravaged by the storm. Climbing to the roof in a bid to be rescued after seeing large portions of their home flushed away, a helicopter came along. The pilot, experienced and capable, managed to get the helicopter to the home despite the conditions – but was surprised to find they had a dog as a companion.

Despite the immense danger of the situation, and with the chance of the home coming away at any point, the rescue team draped down to help pick everyone up. Finding his footing on the least steady ground you can imagine, the rescuer soon realised the job was much harder than he thought. Saving three was going to be a major challenge – but four?

A Challenging Rescue

Attaching the woman to the harness first, and then return for the husband. Hooking them up and getting them onto the helicopter quickly – albeit with a few moments of challenge – the rescuer team returned for the husband as the floods began to worsen.

Lowered onto the roof, he made his way across to help the husband – and the dog, of course – get attached to the harness and make their escape. Despite the ticking time bomb of the situation, they managed to get up and away before the home was torn to shreds by the elements.

They only just escaped the impending damage to the home, and a moment’s hesitation would have meant a much more tragic end. Thankfully, everyone survived and while their loss was immense, there was still the prize of making sure everyone escaped without injury.

Do you think you could go that extra mile to keep your pet safe?
