Watch: Alligator Gets a Prosthetic Tail

This is the story of Mr. Stubbs, an alligator without a tail. If you know a little about these reptiles, you will agree that they cannot swim without their tails. Mr. Stubbs the alligator had been ‘grounded’ for so long until a special prosthetic was invented for him.

This smart invention was made by a group of technicians and animal lovers. Without a tail, it was going to be difficult for Mr. Stubbs to survive all by himself.

It is not certain how Mr. Stubbs lost his tail, but the story is most likely horrific. He was among some alligators rescued from animal smugglers in Arizona. Mr. Stubbs was kept in a private facility for observation and care when his disability was discovered.

It is a miracle he survived. Mr. Stubbs has been treated; there is no threat because of the injury from his missing tail. However, without the tail, releasing him into the wild could be a ‘death sentence.’ Thanks to 3D printing technology, a prosthetic was created.

It was quite a challenge to find a suitable tail for Mr. Stubbs. The issues ranged from the usage, and how well the prosthetic fit. Alligators use their tails in many ways; this meant that the prosthetic had to be firmly secured in place. The technicians at the Phoenix Herpetological Society didn’t give up easily. After a series of trials, the right prosthetic was created.

A 3D printer was used to develop a personalised tail. The focus was on creating a tail that matched Mr. Stubbs structure. It was important to get the right fitting because an alligator’s tail is as important as its legs.

After a series of trials, it was confirmed that the prosthetic was going to work and last longer. This is great news for Mr. Stubbs. Regardless of how well he is cared for at the center, he belongs in the wild. The successful creation of the prosthetic meant he has another chance to live a normal life in his natural habitat. However, there will still be more tests.

So far, these are the accomplishments. Mr. Stubbs has been able to use his new tail to swim in water. It is now easier for him to move around with the use of the prosthetic. This also means he can hunt for food successfully in the wild.

The inventors of the prosthetic have posted videos of Mr. Stubbs testing his new tail in the water. The comments on these videos are hilarious, but generally, everyone is happy that this alligator was saved and is getting the best assistance.

Traffic Comes To A Halt As Swan Family Crosses The Road

Animals and roads usually don’t mix. It’s not something you see every day. But when that happens, we always have a witness to capture that amazing moment when they do. While most animals avoid humans and roads, some gutsy swans recently threw caution to the wind and decided to do some walking.

Why did the herd of swans cross the street? So that they can be caught on video and become an Internet sensation! A swan family crosses the road in Copenhagen, Denmark in this awesome clip. Thanks to everyone who helped make sure they were able to cross safely! Such model citizens! Soon enough, one by one they start crossing and the cars stop for these feathery pedestrians!

They look like the Beatles on that crosswalk, only without the flare pants. If you are wondering why they didn’t just fly across, here’s an idea. Walking uses far less energy than flying. Conserving energy for fleeing danger and long migrations help them survive. Swans tend to walk to their feeding site from water. Since swans are grazing animals, they will do more walking than flying.

It’s really interesting to see all the people and all the cars near this family because even though swans are so gracious animals they aren’t the friendliest of creatures! It’s adorable to watch now, but it’s a good thing that these drivers were paying attention and let these little guys go! It’s good to know that we have such good drivers that pay attention to the road and didn’t disturb this big family making it to the other side!

Swans are close relatives to geese and ducks. There are approximately seven species of swans. There are the Black swan, Tundra swan, Mute swan, Black-necked swan, Trumpeter swan, the Bewick’s swan and the Whistle swan. Interesting, right?

Often seen gliding across lakes, the swan has long represented elegance and refinement. Swans are herbivores. Swans feed principally on sea-going vegetation, with their long necks enabling them to feast upon plants developing on river beds. They likewise eat little animals, for example, mollusks that stick to the vegetation, and little fish, frogs, and worms. Swans likewise will eat in fields, eating grass on the off chance that it is accessible.

Did you know that swans can sleep on water and also on the ground? They can sleep while standing on one leg or while floating on water. Swans have their moments of aggression. So if you see a swan mother with her children it’s better to stay away from them and let them pass or let them do what they need to do because they are very protective of the little ones. So cool!

Police Officer’s Act of Kindness Goes Viral

An amazing act of kindness performed by a Florida police officer is going viral this week after he was filmed helping a homeless man shave his beard so he could apply for a job at McDonald’s. According to a post on the Tallahassee Police Department’s Facebook page, a witness captured the deed on camera over the weekend.

The post reads:

#MustSee #MorePureAwesomeness We thought the picture was awesome, well here’s THE VIDEO of Officer Carlson helping one of our citizens. #TPD #Tallahassee THE STORY AS TOLD BY THE CITIZEN SUBMITTING THE INFORMATION: “My daughter just sent me this picture and called to tell me the story, I had to share….she went to the gas station and saw this officer shaving a homeless man’s beard. A minute later the officer went into the store and Hannah walked in after him and saw him cleaning himself up because he was hot and sweaty. She offered to buy him a drink and got talking. Apparently the officer was at McDonald’s next door and this gentleman went in looking for a job. He was told they wouldn’t hire him unless he shaved his beard. So the officer went and got some clippers and shaved the man’s beard so he could go back and get a job! I am so proud to live in a community where our deputies and officers are such wonderful people. Good job Tallahassee Police Department!!! ❤”

Kelly Duvall sent in a picture and video to the police department after her daughter filmed an officer shave a homeless man’s beard outside a Circle K gas station on Thomasville Road, CBS affiliate WTSP reports. She explains her daughter went inside the store and encountered Officer Carlson, who was cleaning himself up.

“She offered to buy him a drink and got talking. Apparently, the officer was at McDonald’s next door and this gentleman went in looking for a job. He was told they wouldn’t hire him unless he shaved his beard. So the officer went and got some clippers and shaved the man’s beard so he could go back and get a job!”

“I am so proud to live in a community where our deputies and officers are such wonderful people. Good job Tallahassee Police Department!!!” Duvall wrote. The video now has more than 140,000 views on Facebook.

An update was also posted today on facebook from officer Carlson himself on the department’s Facebook page:

#UPDATE FROM OFFICER CARLSON!! Note: It’s his day off but he wanted to give us all this information.

Ok so everybody has been wanting an update on Phil, so here it is:
This evening I was going to dinner with the family and my kids pointed out Phil (and his friend Lonnie) sitting under the flyover on Thomasville Rd. After dinner we decided to pick up a few cheeseburgers from McDonald’s and stop by to talk with Phil. Phil was surprised and excited to see me. He pulled out the Tallahassee Democrat front page, that had me and him on it, and showed it to me.
He then told me he had talked to the manager at McDonald’s and he was set to get a job but he still needed to get his ID/SS card. I then told Phil I had good news about that and told him I had been contacted by Senator Marco Rubio’s office here in town. They stated they had also seen the story and wanted to help Phil get his ID and Social Security card.
I told Phil when I got to work on Thursday I would print out the paperwork they emailed to me and bring it by for Phil to fill out. They also said Phil could come by their office and they would help him with the process. Phil was super excited and assured me he would be ready for Thursday.
Fingers crossed and hopefully we will have another update maybe on Friday.

We are crossing our fingers hard for Phil here and hoping to see a happy ending to this already special event.
