Hilarious Photos Taken At The Gym

Gyms, also known as health clubs, fitness clubs, fitness centers, or health spas are places where patrons go to exercise and build muscle and/or lose fat. Some enter to get bigger, others to get smaller. Nowadays it’s also the place people go to hashtag, Instagram, and check-in on social media.

In our age of vanity, the happenings at a gym, it seems, are well documented based on these photos.

How Cathletic!

What’s new pussycat? As much as we respect the comfort and versatility of wrestling singlets, the graphic here couldn’t look less harmless. What is the message the wearer wishes to give others? Apparently, the comfort of wearing spandex/lycra, or nylon wasn’t enough, so this gentleman wanted something which reminded them of something even more fluffy.

Too big to handle

When someone says “pick on someone your own size”? They mean this exactly. What was this dude thinking? He’s red all over and probably exploding from within, but he’s trying to keep face. His blood tells us otherwise.

The Dirtiest Place on a Plane? Not What You’d Expect

When we go on a plane, we’re always looking around with a bit of edge at who we are surrounded by. Before long, the sniffling kid comes along, sneezes the whole 8-hour journey, and leaves your ‘romantic weekend’ in absolute disarray as you spend your time in New York sitting on the loo.

While it might not always be so drastic, planes are dirty places. However, most of the time, the dirties parts of a plane ride don’t come from where you would expect. In fact, according to a new consumer watchdog program on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), “Marketplace”, some of the dirtiest surfaces and locations on a plane are quite a shock.

Indeed, the show found that headrests and the seat pockets are among the grimiest parts of an airplane journey. For all of those who spend the whole journey sitting with your head up against the headrest, don’t panic. You might just need to sit forward a tiny bit more in future!

The episode which disclosed this was shown on October 26th, and instantly raised a lot of debate about the cleanliness of an airplane. Their team took flights between Ottawa and Montreal eighteen times, flying with Porter, WestJet and Air Canada. With over 100 surface samples taken, the results they came back with were pretty staggering.

It was then studied by Karen Warriner, a microbiologist at the University of Guelph. She checked out the samples, and found that yeast and mould were present on the majority of the flights undertaken. Other dirty points on your plane journey include:

  • Seat belts.
  • Tray tables.
  • Washroom handles.

So, uh, keep that in mind next time you happen to be going for a flight. Indeed, the study came to some pretty interesting conclusions.

What did the study find?

  1. 33% of seatbelts – one third – came with mold and yeast on them.
  2. Washroom handles all contained bacteria as well as high aerobic counts.
  3. Seat pockets had significant volumes of coliforms, mold and E. coli.
  4. Tray tables were also high in mold and other forms of bacterial count.
  5. Headrests were dirtiest, with bacteria, E. coli and the highest aerobic count.

Aerobic counts are a form of bacteria which the Food and Drug Administration rates as a measure of microorganism within a specific product.

In the show, staff for the airlines content that there “simply wasn’t enough time” to carry out the full disinfecting of the full aircraft prior to re-usage. That shines an interesting light on the capacity and overworking taking place within the industry. Can more be done to change that? Here’s hoping.

For now, though, it’s interesting to note that many parts of an airline considered to be the grimiest aren’t – it’s always the things you least expect, right?

Artist Creates Stunning Depiction of Depression

Without doubt, depression is one of the biggest topic of the 21st century. No longer seen as something that we merely use for attention, mental health is quickly becoming a major topic in the modern world. And rightfully so. However, the challenge with mental health discussion can come from making the right kind of emotive impact on the person listening.

Words, often, can’t penetrate to the level expected. This is why experts like Dawid Planeta, a Polish artist, is so useful for talking about depression. The artist and graphical designer takes the role of powerful, gigantic spirit animals to help showcase the enormity of depression.

His latest work, Mini People in the Jungle, is an exceptional visual showcase of his own journey through depression. He describes it as “a story of a man descending into “darkness and chaos in search of himself.”

Throughout each piece, a small human figure appears as the protagonist. Wandering through a litany of stunning, fog-filled locations, each image shows him facing off against some other form of enormous animal: the eyes of the animal always standing out the most, illuminating the entire image.

A significant undertaking

According to Planeta, they help him to find his way, saying: “When he knows who he is, he goes there again, this time without fear. He goes there because it’s a part of who he is. It’s a part of human nature you can’t ignore. You need to know all parts of life, dark and bright.”

Like most artists, Planeta is very candid about his own feelings. Speaking about the experience to My Modern Met, Planeta said: “Depression—it’s not easy to deal with, but when you try, you can stop thinking about it as a weakness and turn it into something brilliant,

“That’s what I aim to accomplish with my art. Things I’m trying to depict are dark, mysterious and frightening, but if you look closely, you will find excitement, passion and joy. Just open your mind and see.”

The imagery is quite special, with some of our favorites from the special piece including:

  1. This stunning oxen, standing out among the fog with its eyes guiding the path to progress, and potential salvation.
  2. Standing underneath a massive goat-like creature, the figure stands with his arms wide-open, ready to face the challenge.
  3. The stunning, mountain-like turtle, offering guidance and protection – one of the few animals to appear with its eyes dimmed.
  4. The rhino provided extra light for the torch, helping the man find his pathway to whatever it is he is searching for.

Want to see more? Be sure to check out the amazing Behance profile that Dawid runs. He has some amazing shots from his collection, with each one making it so easy to see the unique power of art when it comes to facing off against depression.

Happy Birthday! Here’s a Kidney to Save Your Life

“I want that one – no, not that one – THAT one!”

“Mommy where is my helicopter?”

“You said you would get it! Not fair!”

For any parent, these typical whines and shouts will be all-too familiar. The wonderful lack of maturity shown by a child when it comes to birthday gifts can be impressive in its petulance. However, for any parent who has seen their child act in such a poor manner to their birthday gifts, it might be time to show them the story of Henry Whitacre. Henry, 4, was in need of a lot of help – he required a kidney.

With damaged and weak kidneys, young Henry has to go for dialysis as his kidneys are unable to do the job that is needed to keep his body nice and safe. At the Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, Riley enjoys a wonderful game of basketball with the nurses from his crib, looking like a child who is completely free of pain or fear.

The poor child suffered from a bladder condition from birth, and it stopped his kidneys from developing properly in utero. This meant that he was left with a serious renal disease from birth, and spent a huge amount of time in intensive care. For four days a week, Riley undergoes four hours’ worth of treatment. Larger than life despite being just three feet, the little one was in need of serious help – this could not go on forever.

On July 18th, he celebrated his birthday – turning 4. He enjoyed some time with his nurses and with his family, and also got to enjoy two new toys. One of them, a Mr. Potato Head from the Toy Story franchise. The other? A kidney.

A Life Changing Experience

Emily Jones and Kevin Whitacre, the happy parents of this amazing child, decided to reach out for help to find a kidney via social media. And old school friend called Colleen Carnes got in touch, and as former best friends they managed to hit it off once again after quite some time without talking. According to Emily: “There’s not a childhood memory that I have that doesn’t have her in it,”

While they drifted a bit after High School, they maintained long-distance friendship via Facebook and spoke from time to time. After sending out a “raw” plea for help via Facebook, she found a message in her inbox from Carnes, saying: “Hey, I talked to your donor (coordinator), I’m a match, send me the paperwork to start the testing.”

“I kind of knew then that this is who is going to give her kidney to my kid. It’s surreal for me to think about the fact that I have a child that requires all this. But to know that somebody else is willing to step in and say ‘I want to give you this gift,’ I don’t think the reality has completely sunk in.”

It’s an amazing story and a hugely positive turn after many donors simply did not work out. The little one then underwent his surgery under the steady hand of Dr. William Goggins, who has performed over 2,000 transplants of kidneys – though none quite like this one!

Since Henry is so small, and his long-term history of abdominal surgery so far, the little one was going to be a challenge to operate on. However, by 5:20PM, Henry had his kidney and was well on the way to being happier, healthier and – crucially – out of that hospital bed.

It’s expected that, throughout this life he will need as many as three kidneys – with the average kidney transplant lasting 12-15 years. While there is a shortage, the creation of an artificial kidney is underway: by the time he needs his second kidney, the hope is that this tech will be available.

Get better soon, Henry – we’re cheering for you!

Need a New Activity? Consider Cow Cuddling

As one of the most hilarious and placid animals on the planet, the cow is a uniquely enjoyable animal to spend time around. Like all animals, though, a cow can be hard to spend time around for long without feeling at least a little uncomfortable: especially if you aren’t used to being around cows.

However, if you want to get over that problem, for the mere price of $300, you could cuddle a cow for an hour and a half.

That’s right – cow cuddling is now officially a very expensive activity that you can take part in. Hugging a massive cow might be one of the best ways to improve your mental health, apparently, and it’s become a very important part of the wonderfully expensive “wellness” industry that has become so strangely popular.

Thanks to PubMed, we can say that this kind of activity is now a popular thing to do with your time. Animal interaction is supposed to be good for our mental health and can go a long way to making sure we can recover from mental stress and strain. If you wish to take part, then a trip to the Mountain Horse Farm in New York is the place to start. You can play with them, brush their coats or simply pet the cow – or hose if you prefer.

According to the official website: “Cows have a body temperature that is slightly higher than humans and their heart rate is lower than ours. Cuddling up with a cow, feeling that lower heart rate and higher body temperature, is very relaxing,”

So fear not: there is a genuine science behind this. It’s not some weird idea that has been concocted by farmers to charge people comical sums of money to hug a barnyard animal.

Unorthodox but Outstanding

Not only does it help us to connect with nature in a way that many of us simply cannot in the modern world, it also makes it easy for us to communicate with said animals. The website notes that ‘They will pick up on what’s going on inside and sense if you are happy, sad, feel lost, anxious or are excited, they will respond to that without judgment, ego or agenda.’ – and that it can bring a sense of healing and comfort to the body that simply would not be attainable otherwise.

For $300, you can get a 90-minute session which is sure to bring about some rather comical personal experiences. For an hour, you would pay around $75. You can also bring a friend with you, and you can enjoy the cuddling of a cow together.

Odd? Yes. Therapeutic? Extremely. It’s an odd experience, but there appears to be something genuine about it given the immensely positive nature of the feedback it receives. Why not try it out?

Using Drones To Fight Malaria!

As one of the most terrifying and prominent illnesses found in Malawi, finding a solution to Malaria has been hard work. It’s a common challenge all across Africa, but it has become a major problem for Malawi in particular. Finding ways to combat the spread of malaria has been fruitless in the past, with containment the best available option – until now.

Thanks to the development and easy set-up of drone technology, they are now a prominent part of the solution to help fight back against malaria. With most of the ability to fight malaria on the ground being nothing more than good men and women using buckets and spades to get the cures and solutions they need, drone tech offers a more high-end option.

Towns like Kasungu, the town that sits at the base of the Kasungu Mountain, is a rampant part of the malaria issue. It’s also one of the first towns to take part in the Unicef drone testing program. Working alongside the Malawi government, an 80km-wide area was set up to help flying and testing out drones to help the locals fight back against the illness.

These drones are used to drop off key supplies to areas that might be hard or otherwise impossible to reach with the right tools. It also helps with scouting, making it easier to pinpoint areas where outbreaks are highest. Most importantly, though, this is helping Malawi residents learn how to build and then pilot a drone so that the good work can be continued outside of this particular area.

Indeed, with a quarter of Malawian children under the age of five suffering from malaria, it’s vital that we act quickly to help minimize the damage and limit the spread of the illness. However, elimination of malaria is still a long, long way away.

How can drones help?

Part of the problem with the spread of malaria comes from the complicated process of the Anopheles mosquito. They take a blood meal from a human or an animal, and then search for water to help lay the eggs. When they find these little ponds, pools, and lakes – common during November-April – then malaria outbreaks will swell and grow.

The aim is to try and reduce the mosquito breeding levels and to also help make sure that both dry and wet season can see reduced numbers. The aim of the drones is to help reduce the time that it takes to find mosquito breeding points and also to find mosquito larvae. This is a time-consuming task to do by hand, and the hope is that the drones can speed up this essential part of the process.

The idea, then, is to help improve analysis speed and simplicity to help find out where mosquitos are most commonly congregating and breeding. The more that can be done to control this, the better the hope is that a long-term solution can and will be found to help curb the development and rapid transmission of malaria across the board.

Help? How to Overcome a Fear of Flying

For years I found the concept of flying hard to get over. One of the first things I ever remember hearing about an aircraft was the name – Concord. While I would have been around 8 or 9 at the time, we didn’t have the money to go on holiday outside of our own country.

So, I never really cared for planes from a young age – when my first interaction with a plane was to hear about it exploding on the news, it left a long-term mark on my mind. First impressions and all that.

Anyway, for years I basically would find any unique way to avoid flying. For a trip, I’d insist that we’d drive from the UK and through other nations to get to where we wished to go. I’m lucky that those I travel with are just as good at enjoying a road trip as I am at suggesting one. However, it did leave me with a fear of flying for a large part of my life – so what can you do if you are like me?

Flying with Confidence

How can you avoid missing out on many important trips and flights in life through an irrational fear?

I recommend that you take a look at British Airways and their ‘Flying with Confidence’ program. For me, it was a life-changer: it really helped me to get over the parts of flying that scared the life out of me. You meet all manner of people in these places. I met people who take on dangerous trips for a living, driving vehicles in horrifying conditions, that simply could not step foot on a plane.

I met people like myself, who were left with a terrifying impression of flying from something they had indirectly experienced in childhood.

Changing your mind

One of the best parts of the process was that all it needed was for me to listen to the words of a professional pilot. Just as my dad used to put me at ease as a child when we’d drive in his old cars due to his skill as a driver, the pilots were quickly able to poo-poo and assuage any fears or worries that I had.

It felt great to have every “But what about…” question and fear batted back at me with a logical, legitimate answer that just made sense. The course even finished with a short flight, where I able to actually confront, combat and then defeat my fear all at once! Just some of the things that put me at ease here included:

  • Being able to learn more about how the aircraft works: learning about the operational details really made a big difference.
  • Speaking to the pilots had a huge impact, too. As I said, hearing it from a professional made a big difference.
  • Getting a better grounding on things like turbulence and other aircraft issues, helping me to see its akin to a car not changing gear as opposed to the engine exploding.
  • Panic and distraction techniques to help me stay comfortable when, as expected, something might go wrong during the flight and leave you worried.
  • Coping with the flight and taking small steps to appreciate where I was going wrong in my train of thought regarding flight.

If you are like me and find overcoming your fear of flying too much, I recommend that you take a trip to the British Airways Flying with Confidence program. It’s quite affordable and could make it much easier for you to start enjoying seeing the world without that constant fear of flying.

Think These Healthy Foods are Great? Think Again

Life is full of surprises for us. often, foods that we would think are really good for us are terrible for us – and vice versa. It’s a common problem, and one of the main reasons why many of us eat such poor and radically unbalanced diets. When you cannot find out for certain what is good and what is bad, how can you possibly moderate your food to a high standard?

To help you get around that problem, we recommend that you take a look at these simple ‘health foods’ that you should try and avoid. Starting today, you can make a pretty quick change to the way that you eat simply by making sure you stop eating these foods promoted for their goodness.

Whole Wheat Bread.

Another common food to eat for a health kick is whole wheat bread: that may not be the case after all. Many whole wheat pieces of bread are still loaded with the poor dietary fiber of white bread. They are also often loaded with high fructose corn syrups, meaning they aren’t anywhere near as healthy as certain health gurus might make out.

Diet Juice.

Removing sugar for sweetener ain’t as healthy as it sounds. Not only are quite a few of the big name sweeteners under review for their potential ill-causing health effects, with links to cancer becoming clear in some studies, but they are loaded with artificial colors and other nonsense. If you want to enjoy a treat, simply reduce your consumption of real soda down to a couple of cans per week: it’s better than drinking diet soda at the same rate you drink the real stuff. If you can, though, cut it out altogether.

Dried Fruits.

A common food to eat on-the-go for easy enjoyment, it might not be anywhere near as good for you as some people make out. Cured using a sulfite and loaded with added sugar on top of what is already in the fruit, these are anything but healthy treats!

Salad Dressing.

Lastly, put an end to picking up salad dressing at the supermarket. ‘Low fat’ salad dressings are often made from sugar and salt mostly meaning they are worse for you than the fats. If you are going to use a salad dressing, use a tiny helping of the real stuff.

Agave Syrup.

Supposedly the ‘healthy’ way to sweeten your foods it’s actually really bad for you. Some studies show that it might be even worse for you than standard white sugar. Don’t keep taking this stuff: it’s not the natural sweetener many claims.

Keep this in mind, and you should find it a fair bit easier to get around the problems that you face with ‘healthy eating ‘that leads to weight gain!

Success? Vaping Cuts Over 1.5m Smokers in Six Years

While not everyone likes the vaping culture, it’s safe to say that it has had a tremendous effect on curbing smoking. As a former smoker myself, I know how hard it is to give up the concept of having a smoke. For many people, vaping is the next best option: I don’t do it myself, but can easily see the appeal for others. Add in the fact that it has helped the best part of 1.5m people to give up on classic cigarettes in just six years, and it’s easy to see why it has become so immensely popular.

Around 15% of English people used tobacco in 2017, according to studies. In 2011, though, that was closer to 20%. That’s a big drop-off, then, with around one-quarter of all English smokers giving up or moving on to a vape instead.

With 2.8m vapers in England, that’s a big boost from the smaller numbers just a short time previously. It’s interesting to see the drop-off, as people look to a healthier alternative to smoking. The habit is as hard to get right as anything else. For that reason, many smokers can find it hard to give up or to move on: vaping offers a still-to-be-guaranteed solution for those who want to some less.

Given the temperature differentials and the difference in the make-up of vape gear, it’s so easy to see why so many people trust it to be safer. You can make up your own vape liquid so that you know what you are putting into it. This cuts out the worry about taking in the dangerous toxins found in classic cigarettes.

It also means that you are not using a heating solution that goes to carcinogenic levels, as far as we know. Therefore, the difference in smoking numbers is easy to see: as more people begin to engage with vaping, it can only become more popular in the long-term.

At the moment, places like Sunderland, Manchester and Hull all have large smoking-related hospital admissions. The hope is that, in time, e-cigs will give enough people the impetus they need to give up smoking altogether or find a solution that will be far less dangerous for you in the long-term moving forward.

Health Tech: Safer And Cheaper Colonoscopies from Surprising Company

Science and technology surprise us with new inventions every day. IBEX Technologies have introduced a thin inflatable sleeve that can go into a dark tunnel. It has a camera attached at the front which can record and transmit live video and capture high resolution images.

These RoboSleeve can also be used in areas such which include, earthquake-affected areas, hurricanes, collapsed mines. Also, sewage, water and gas pipelines can be inspected by this RoboSleeve.

The founders of IBEX, Oleg Popov, and Raphael Moisa came up with the idea of a spinoff which will go inside a 2-meter long tunnel in the human body called Colon. Doctors recommend colonoscopies to detect cancer in older people. If this type of cancer is detected early, there is 92% chance of survival of the patient. These colonoscopies are expensive, costing about $60,000. The poor might not be able to afford such expensive colonoscopy. Furthermore, the procedure is dangerous, It might negatively affect the Colon.

Tested on animals and simulators

IBEX designed disposable endoscope which can enter the colon like a “soft elongated party balloon, the type you make animals out of,” says Ido Agmon, Consis Medical’s business development manager. “Inverted sleeve expands and carries itself all the way through the colon, gently and quickly.” The device has been tested on animals and proved safer and cheaper as compared to the traditional endoscope. As Agmon tells, “an elongated semi-rigid tube that the doctor has to navigate through the colon. It’s very painful, it takes time and it’s not pleasant at all, not for the patient and not for the doctor either… it only expands from its front end and doesn’t have to be pushed,”

He adds, “It’s the size of a capsule, less than 10 centimeters long,” Agmon points out. “That’s a big difference than cleaning a 2-meter-long endoscope with many small cavities and channels.”

Cheaper than the competition?

Consis Medical Sleeve and Imaging PillCm 2, both work differently. However, they have 1 thing in common, both are less invasive than traditional colonoscopies. Furthermore, other Israeli companies such as GI view and a German company Invendo made disposable endoscope and were approved by FDA, a year ago and January 2018, respectively.

Agmon argues that the Consis Medical sleeves costs only $100 per unit which is the cheapest in the market. He says, “Our plan is to get into the first human clinical trials in the next 12 months,” FDA is probably going to take 3 to 4 years to fully approve this new device.

An interesting thing about the company is that it is looking to collaborate rather than complete with the companies currently working on colonoscopy, such as Olympus. Agmon says, “This market needs to go single use, that’s why Ambu bought Invendu.”

Agmun also identifies problems that come with this new device. He says, “there are two problems: First, virtual usually means using a CT machine with x-rays to examine the colon, not necessarily a cheaper or safer alternative.

Second, while virtual exams and capsule technologies can spot suspicious polyps, they cannot remove them. A classic colonoscopy is needed in order to do a biopsy” He adds, “So most doctors prefer the real colonoscopy from the start,”

Consis Medical currently has 3 people on board and they have a goal to raise $2 Million to build a larger team.

5 Simple Tips for Combating Mosquito Bites

As the summer comes over the horizon, it’s easy to get excited about BBQs, long nights in the sun and spending as much time with the people who you love. Sadly, for all the glory that summer often brings, it also brings some much less enjoyable issues; mainly that of a mosquito invasion. Mosquitos are sadly popular in many parts of the world and bring all manner of potential problems to the table for you to try and get around.

Worried about mosquitos this summer? Here some solutions for combating mosquito bites: though please be aware that some come with rather particular consequences that you might wish to avoid.

Invest in Repellent.

The first and most important change that you can make is to use mosquito repellent. This helps to keep them off you and can make sure that you get rid of those problems with them biting you and getting in around you. Try and limit how much you use on your skin, though; high-level DEET sprays have the potential to give you some issues.

Avoid Others.

Sounds anti-social, but meh. If you want to avoid yourself getting bitten by mosquitos, avoid other people. They look for carbon dioxide, which is produced with every breathe that we take. They will, therefore, be attracted to groups of people, and come down to sample all of your blood. Avoid that and try to stay within smaller groups of people.

Stay Still.

Mosquitos are also less likely to come and bother you if you are not moving around as much. The more movement you make, the more likely they are to come down and land on you, annoying you as you go. They sense body heat very well, and thus will come down to find surface blood from the hot body.

If you are someone who seems to attract mosquitos, then you would do well to have a more sedentary lifestyle when you are surrounded by these creatures.

Wear Light Clothing.

Simple but effective, changing to lighter coloured garments can be very useful. Avoid dark colors and you are much harder to spot to a mosquito. It also helps you to handle the heat a bit better, so don’t be worried about wearing lighter colors in the summer; most of the time, it helps you to stay cooler and to help avoid being seen by mosquitos.

Stop Boozing.

Sorry, but one of the biggest mosquito attractions is alcohol. You will find that a few beers will make sure that you start to take blood flow to the skin and this makes it much more attractive to any mosquitos floating around looking for lunch. Whatever the cause of your problem is, you will soon find that this helps you to avoid becoming dinner for mosquitos all because you had a liquid lunch!

While some of these might make it harder to enjoy summer as you had intended, it will vastly reduce the amount of time and effort that it takes for you to handle an outbreak of mosquitos.
