OMG: After 66 Years Longest Fingernails Have Been Cut

For many years Shridhar Chillal the 82-year-old man from Pune, India had made news as the owner of the longest fingernails on a single hand. He was recently in the news after cutting his famous nails at the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not at the Times Square, New York, US. Chillal had been growing his nails since he was only 14 years old.

He never thought the nails would grow so long and he will be in the news for this spectacular feature. Over the years, Chillal grew his nails so long and had been recognized by many world record archives.

At the last measurement, his nails were discovered to be about 909.6 cm (29 ft. 10.1 in) in total. This is about the length of a standard bus in London. The individual nails were measured and the lengths are as follows:

Little finger: 179.1 cm

Ring finger: 181.6 cm

Middle finger: 186.6 cm

Index finger: 164.5 cm

Thumb: 197.8 cm

At his first appearance in the Guinness World Records in 1979, Chillal’s nails were found to have a combined measurement of 219.7 cm (86.5 inches). At the Science & Stuff event recently organized, the audience was educated about fingernails and how they can grow to be so long.

Chillal in many interviews has expressed his joy at this accomplishment, however; the fingernails have had an impact on his life. He has had to be very careful when sleeping or moving around because the nails are very delicate and can easily break.

He works as a photographer back in India. It has been a long-time passion, and he has been able to cope with his photography job by using a special handle to protect his nails while working.

Asked if he had faced criticisms, he confirms that there was stiff opposition from his parents while he was growing up. They had the opinion that he would not be able to work if he continued growing his nails. Over the years, the amazing length of the nails made his hands quite handicapped because he couldn’t use them due to the weight of the nails.

When asked why he cut the nails eventually, he confirmed that the nails had caused his him to feel a lot of pain at his wrists and fingers. He claims the tips of the nails hurt all the time. Chillal has made a name for himself in the world of weird news. The nails have been cut and will be displayed at the Times Square, Ripley’s Believe IT or Not.

Century’s Longest Lunar Eclipse Happening This Weekend

This Friday, July 27, the earth will cast a shadow over the full moon  For almost two hours,  103 minutes to be exact, the usually silvery moon will turn blood red and ochre. It will be the longest “blood moon” lunar eclipse of the 21st century, lasting 26 minutes longer than the last total lunar eclipse that happened in January.

There are good news and bad news though, the good news is that unlike other eclipses this one will be visible to almost everyone around the globe. The bad news is that people in North America will not be able to see it at all (save for a slice of Newfoundland, Canada).

Sadly, by the time night falls in North America,  the eclipse will already have ended. The moon will have finished traversing Earth’s shadow, or umbra. The next time people in North America will be able to see a Lunar eclipse will be January 21, 2019.

For those that live in any other continent  all you have to do in order to see this natural marvel is to go outside at 17:14 Universal time (1:14 pm ET) and look for the moon. That’s when the partial phase of the eclipse starts. The full eclipse begins at 19:30 UTC and as stated before will last a full hour and 43 minutes! (Check out precisely when the eclipse will occur where you live on TimeandDate.com.)

If for some reason you can not go outside during this time you can of course stream the event, it is 2018 after all. The astronomy education website Slooh will live-stream coverage of the eclipse starting at 1 pm Eastern on July 27. Watch it right here.

For those who can’t wait here is a time laps video of the previous blood moon:

Statistics: UK Summer 2018 Holidays Locations

Every summer, the people of the UK decide to get up and get out. The UK might turn into a stunning place in the summer, but few things beat a trip to many parts of Europe, the Caribbean or the Americas. For that reason, we wanted to take a look at some of the most popular tourist destinations this year for the major UK city dwellers.

Where are the people of each major city flying off to this summer? What seems to be the hit experience? With so many of us now booking up last minute holidays, where can you expect to see everyone going?

According to online travel agency Loveholidays, they found that some of the major spots for those in London, for example, included Jamaica, Cyprus, Morocco, and Turkey. Paris, of course, is still high on the list. Jamaica, Cyprus, Morocco, and Turkey, though, appear to be some of the most popular take-off destinations for those living in the capital at this moment in time.

Other popular destinations were noted by their North/South divide. For example, people from the North are more likely to head to places which are nearby, familiar and tried-and-tested: the Balearic Islands, for example. Southerners, though, are more likely to go for more ambitious places like Sri Lanka or St Lucia. It’s quite interesting to see the divide.

What is interesting is that those in London are far less likely to hit up two major European last-minute hot spots: Croatia and Bulgaria. Among the most beautiful parts of Europe, they are a surprising exclusion from regular tourist stop-off point for those from the South. It’s also the same with the Dominican Republic: far more likely for a Northern traveler than a Southern once.

The main exception to this is Essex, where people love to fly to places like Croatia, Malta, and Mexico. Southern flyers are less likely to go and visit places like Portugal and Cuba, too. There’s certainly a bit of a hidden indicator here, and I can’t quickly put my finger on it…

What about the Midlands?

The good people of the Midlands are kind of stuck in a limbo: thrown in with the answers from both sides of the country. For those who come from places like Birmingham, for example, popular tourist stop-off points included Cuba and the Caribbean. Trips to Egypt, too, are very popular. Cyprus and Bulgaria are quite prominent from a European standpoint.

The Greek Isles are popular with people from the Midlands as well as people from cities such as Liverpool. There’s a lot of diversity out there on the topic, and a lot of interesting discoveries. From Newcastle and Sunderland preferring Majorca and Bulgaria to the Scots looking to make a run for places like the Canary Islands, Portugal and Spain, it’s interesting to see the divide in climate, culture and cost depending on what part of the nation is being looked at for a holiday.

MIT Scientists Unveil First Psychopath AI Called ‘Norman’

Science has gone way beyond our imagination. Scientists are struggling day and night to create new inventions that will leave the world amazed and astonished. This time, scientists from Massachusetts Institute of Technology have unveiled a new and weird artificial intelligence algorithm. They have trained it to be a psychopath.

The psychopath AI is named “Norman” by the team of MIT scientists. They took this name from the film Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock’s which has a killer named Norman Bates in it. Three scientists namely, Pinar Yanardag, Manuel Cebrian and Iyad Rahwan trained Norman. After going through a “Deep learning method”, Norman is now able to interpret images and written text in a different way.  The “Deep learning method” included exposing Norman to troubling and violent images posted on subreddit that were dedicated to death.

They gave Norman a Rorschach Inkblot test to see what is up with the AI. To those of you who don’t know what Rorschach inkblot test it, it is a psychological test in which subjects’ insights of inkblots are noted and then analyzed using psychological interpretation, complex algorithms, or both.

The AI Norman interpreted some of the images in words such as “man gets pulled into dough machine,” or “a man is electrocuted and catches to death.”, or “a pregnant woman falls at construction story” and “man is shot dead in front of his screaming wife.” The same test was given to a standard AI who interpreted the images in the following words, “a close up of a vase with flowers,” “a couple of people standing next to each other” and “a person is holding an umbrella in the air.”

This little experiment proves that AI’s still see the world through the eyes of their programmer. The team that created Norman was quick to talk about the bias in earlier AI’s. “So when people say that AI algorithms can be biased and unfair, the culprit is often not the algorithm itself, but the biased data that was fed to it, The same method can see very different things in an image, even ‘sick’ things, if trained on the wrong (or, the right!) Data set.”

The MIT team has also set up their own website where people can interpret Rorschach inkblots images and compare them with what Norman has to say about them.

The scientific world is running very fast in this chaotic world and impressing the world every now and then with new researchers and inventions.

Stay tuned to find out more about where the world is heading to.

OMG: Oldest Ever Human Virus Found

Science is full of crazy, and scary, facts and finds. One of the most terrifying finds that we have heard of and come across, though, is this recent one. You see, scientists are always up to crazy things that we usually don’t hear about until they find a proven result.

Well, scientists just found the oldest known human virus – Hepatitis B – in a 4,500-year-old skeleton!

The skeleton hails from the Bronze Ages and helps to provide some key evidence for what is presently the oldest known virus for humanity. While now a dead strain of the virus, it was once upon a time a major threat to the world – and likely was a fatal part of the Bronze Age’ health demographic. So far, the oldest human virus that had been proven and detected was around 450 years old; the average, for reference, is around 50 years.

This sample, though, came from large parts of Eurasia and the massive collection of bone samples contained Hepatitis B in there. Indeed, it was found in around 25 of the 300 bodies which were checked. Some bodies were Bronze Age, while others were from the medieval times. Around 12 of those skeletons came with enough viral genetic code for it to be further studied and analyzed.

It was under that closer inspection that more was found out about the condition of the bodies. Indeed, the oldest, hailing from Osterhofen in Germany, was around 4,488 years old. This incredible body was studied by Cambridge University Professor Dr Terry Jones. Jones said that: “Scientists mostly study modern virus strains and we have mainly been in the dark regarding ancient sequences – until now. It was like trying to study evolution without fossils.

“If we only studied the animals living today it would give us a very inaccurate picture of their evolution. It is the same with viruses.”

Today, Hepatitis B affects many people, and is associated with many other conditions. Indeed, a whopping 257 million people were estimated to be suffering from chronic HBV in the world today. If you wish to find out more about it, you should look into the latest copy of Nature, a popular journal.

Alongside Jones is Barbara Muhlemann, who is a PhD student at Cambridge and the co-lead on the study. She said that: “People have tried to unravel the history of HBV for decades. This study transforms our understanding of the virus and proves it affected people as far back as the Bronze Age.

“We have also shown that it is possible to recover viral sequences from samples of this age which will have much wider scientific implications.”

Among many other interesting parts of this discovery is the fact that we can now definitively say that viruses can die out and go extinct. With proof hard to maintain in the past, this is the perfect case study to follow about the potential extinction of strains of viruses.

Interesting Facts About The Walking Dead

We bring you interesting facts about one of the most popular TV shows nowadays – The Walking Dead, AMC’s zombie show lasting for 7 seasons.

  1. Too violent for HBO?

Originally, the creators of the show first offered their idea to HBO, as they believed it would be the best fit. After all, this is the production house behind Game of Throne and many shocking scenes, including murders, nudity and incest. Yet, they demanded a significant reduction of violence.

Fortunately, AMC accepted The Walking Dead, under other condition- no swearing.

  1. The opening logo is decaying over time

Although opening credits of the show are often fast-forwarded, even a non-regular viewer will notice the change in the main title sequence. The logo has gotten darker, filthier and worn-out since season one.

The logo is show runners idea of depicting deterioration of both zombie corpses and human behavior. The only question remaining- what will be left at the end of the series?

  1. Networks wanted to leave out the zombie

Another production house, NBC wanted to accept the apocalyptic show of people surviving the epidemic of human eating zombies, but under condition- to exclude the zombies.

After this idea fell off, another suggestion was to turn the show into a zombie version of Law& Order or CSI, where would Rick and others solve a “zombie crime” each week in order to understand the human nature better. Frank Darabont, the original show runner – ran away.

  1. The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad might exist in the same universe

Although this is just another speculation, there is a possible connection of AMC’s most famous shows.

First, the car Glenn stole in Season 1, red Dodge Challenger, is the same vehicle Walter White returned to a car store managed by a man called Glenn. Merle Dixon had a stash of drugs with some Blue Sky meth, Walter White’s trademark product. Also, Daryl told to Beth about Merle’s dealer “junky little white guy” often using the word “bitch.” Resembling Jesse Pinkman, perhaps?

  1. Dale wanted to be killed off

Even though this is a show where you can never guess who will be next, even the writers have to improvise sometimes. Jeffrey DeMunn wanted to be killed off, because the actor was unsatisfied with his friend Frank Darabon being fired in Season 2.

So, instead of Hershel being killed by Carl’s pet walker, Dale was killed. Luckily, one old bearded guy easily changed the place of another, especially as the moral center of the group.

  1. Character of Daryl Dixon was created for the show

Interestingly, this character does not exist in the comic books. Yet, he is possibly the most popular survivor of the show.

Actor Norman Reedus originally auditioned for the role of Merle, who also does not exist in comics. Writer Robert Kirkman was so fascinated by Reedus’ performance that he created another character so he could be on the show.

  1. 16mm films are used for series’ shooting

In the age of modern technology, most of the series or movies are shot with digitally, as it is easier, more colorful and cheaper. Yet, zombies look cooler on film.

The show is shot on Kodak’s Super 16mm, since the first day. The show runners insisted that grainy look achieved this way matches perfectly with the show. Also, zombie makeup appears a lot more disgusting this way.
