Yummy: Most Expensive Meals In The World

When we live in a world of haves and have-nots, stories like this can always feel a bit grim. You know, stories about luxurious foods that cost more than the average person earns in a month. It’s a dreadful state of affairs and only helps to perpetuate the idea that those with all the money don’t have a clue how to spend it properly. Anyway, I digress. You are here because you want to read about quality food items.

Well, the world knows how to price its luxury foods. Want some examples? Here are a few grotesquely priced delights.

Vanilla Flower

I know what you are thinking – but you have lots of vanilla ice cream in the freezer. At around $4,000 per pound, vanilla costs a huge amount. It only blooms for a few hours in a year, and does not leave much by way of pollination.

Vanilla itself is a very expensive product – the idea that you can get it so easily is quite a surprise given the cost of it per pound in its purest form.

Almas Caviar

A classic of the ‘it cost how much!?’ food world, Almas caviar is horrendously expensive. You would be paying as much as $25,000 for this kind of caviar. It’s needle in a haystack stuff to find it, even in its native Iran. The fact it comes in a 24-karat gold tin lets you know just how ridiculous the world has gone when it comes to how we spend.

White Truffles

At not far off seven grand for a kilogram of white truffles, these outrageous foods are one of the most expensive in the world. They are used in the highest quality of fishes, and only tiny amounts will be used such is their rarity, cost and, most importantly, quality.

It’s one of those foods that, you may be surprised to know, I have never tried. Apparently, though, it’s dynamite with scrambled eggs. It looks rancid, but apparently tastes like royalty.

Bluefin Tuna

Another very popular dish but madly priced is that of the Bluefin tuna. At close to $4,000 for a single pound of it, Bluefin is a very expensive product. It gets used in a lot of top meals and tends to be a very expensive add-on if you were to want it used in your food.

However, given the Bluefin tuna is a species getting close to extinction as it stands, it’s not just an expensive dish to eat – it’s an ethical hazard, too.

Densuke Watermelon

One of the most expensive items that we could find, though, is the Japanese Densuke watermelon. This item sold for over $6,000 at an auction in Japan, and became a huge talking point. This black watermelon isn’t rotten or anything like that – it’s a unique kind of Japanese fruit.

It might seem a bit nuts, but the Densuke watermelon is among the most expensive dishes that you could ever eat.

Foie Gras

Out of all the items we looked into, though, we found that Foie Gras – duck/goose liver – was among the most expensive. It’s extremely nice apparently, but it’s going to cost you a hell of a lot to eat if you want to try it out. Prices depend on where you go, but a 2lb Foie Gras would cost you around $150.

That might not sound like much considering the above prices, but keep in mind it’s a meal, not an ingredient like some of the above.

In a world where so many starve, it’s pretty wild that we have food that can cost as much as this, right?

Bets Future Ever: IBM Unveils Coffee Drones

IBM seems to have wasted no time in patenting this idea. It is a coffee delivery drone that can detect when you are tired or in need of a drink. It has been designed to recognize signs such as blood pressure, facial expressions, and dilated pupils who are possible signs of exhaustion.

The drone proceeds to deliver a nice cup of coffee to you, such a relief. The drone is designed to be used in offices and enclosed spaces where dozens of employees sit for hours studying the screen of their computers while working. Now you don’t have to go through the hassles of fixing a cup of coffee because it will be delivered to you at the right time. This is a technology many businesses will be interested in adopting to improve the productivity of their employees.

The drone is enhanced with superior intelligence to identify the “cognitive state” of the employees in a workspace and deliver cups of coffee with the use of an unspooling string which the drone has been fitted with, and to avoid spills the cup of coffee is delivered in zip bags. Alternatively, the coffee can be dispensed from the drone directly into the coffee mug of the employees.

It is apparent that IBM has big plans for this idea. If it chooses not to sell the patent, it can proceed to develop the drone. Asides from the cognitive detection functions, the drone can also be ‘summoned’ whenever you need a cup of coffee while working on your projects. This can be done with a wave of the hands, a gesture that is recognized by the drone.

IBM filed the patent for its drone in the United States, a process that costs a lot of money. In the long run, the deal can become very profitable. Tech companies such as IBM have been keeping closely guarded secrets about special projects that are expected to become the next big inventions in the technology industry.

It is a good thing a tech company such as IBM are now considering the development of inventions based on artificial intelligence. We hope to hear more news about other patents for products targeted at making our lives better.

Success? Vaping Cuts Over 1.5m Smokers in Six Years

While not everyone likes the vaping culture, it’s safe to say that it has had a tremendous effect on curbing smoking. As a former smoker myself, I know how hard it is to give up the concept of having a smoke. For many people, vaping is the next best option: I don’t do it myself, but can easily see the appeal for others. Add in the fact that it has helped the best part of 1.5m people to give up on classic cigarettes in just six years, and it’s easy to see why it has become so immensely popular.

Around 15% of English people used tobacco in 2017, according to studies. In 2011, though, that was closer to 20%. That’s a big drop-off, then, with around one-quarter of all English smokers giving up or moving on to a vape instead.

With 2.8m vapers in England, that’s a big boost from the smaller numbers just a short time previously. It’s interesting to see the drop-off, as people look to a healthier alternative to smoking. The habit is as hard to get right as anything else. For that reason, many smokers can find it hard to give up or to move on: vaping offers a still-to-be-guaranteed solution for those who want to some less.

Given the temperature differentials and the difference in the make-up of vape gear, it’s so easy to see why so many people trust it to be safer. You can make up your own vape liquid so that you know what you are putting into it. This cuts out the worry about taking in the dangerous toxins found in classic cigarettes.

It also means that you are not using a heating solution that goes to carcinogenic levels, as far as we know. Therefore, the difference in smoking numbers is easy to see: as more people begin to engage with vaping, it can only become more popular in the long-term.

At the moment, places like Sunderland, Manchester and Hull all have large smoking-related hospital admissions. The hope is that, in time, e-cigs will give enough people the impetus they need to give up smoking altogether or find a solution that will be far less dangerous for you in the long-term moving forward.

5 Simple Tips for Combating Mosquito Bites

As the summer comes over the horizon, it’s easy to get excited about BBQs, long nights in the sun and spending as much time with the people who you love. Sadly, for all the glory that summer often brings, it also brings some much less enjoyable issues; mainly that of a mosquito invasion. Mosquitos are sadly popular in many parts of the world and bring all manner of potential problems to the table for you to try and get around.

Worried about mosquitos this summer? Here some solutions for combating mosquito bites: though please be aware that some come with rather particular consequences that you might wish to avoid.

Invest in Repellent.

The first and most important change that you can make is to use mosquito repellent. This helps to keep them off you and can make sure that you get rid of those problems with them biting you and getting in around you. Try and limit how much you use on your skin, though; high-level DEET sprays have the potential to give you some issues.

Avoid Others.

Sounds anti-social, but meh. If you want to avoid yourself getting bitten by mosquitos, avoid other people. They look for carbon dioxide, which is produced with every breathe that we take. They will, therefore, be attracted to groups of people, and come down to sample all of your blood. Avoid that and try to stay within smaller groups of people.

Stay Still.

Mosquitos are also less likely to come and bother you if you are not moving around as much. The more movement you make, the more likely they are to come down and land on you, annoying you as you go. They sense body heat very well, and thus will come down to find surface blood from the hot body.

If you are someone who seems to attract mosquitos, then you would do well to have a more sedentary lifestyle when you are surrounded by these creatures.

Wear Light Clothing.

Simple but effective, changing to lighter coloured garments can be very useful. Avoid dark colors and you are much harder to spot to a mosquito. It also helps you to handle the heat a bit better, so don’t be worried about wearing lighter colors in the summer; most of the time, it helps you to stay cooler and to help avoid being seen by mosquitos.

Stop Boozing.

Sorry, but one of the biggest mosquito attractions is alcohol. You will find that a few beers will make sure that you start to take blood flow to the skin and this makes it much more attractive to any mosquitos floating around looking for lunch. Whatever the cause of your problem is, you will soon find that this helps you to avoid becoming dinner for mosquitos all because you had a liquid lunch!

While some of these might make it harder to enjoy summer as you had intended, it will vastly reduce the amount of time and effort that it takes for you to handle an outbreak of mosquitos.

Intl’ Whiskey Day: Can You Tell Between Scotch, Rye, Bourbon and Whiskey?

This week, all whiskey connoisseurs around the world will get to celebrate International Whiskey Day. This takes place on the 28 March and is a day for those who enjoy their booze to really take part in some of the finest spirits known to man. As one of the most popular forms of alcohol around, whiskey carries a certain reputation that ensures it stands out from the crowd.

With the big day just around the corner, though, do you get the difference between the various different forms of alcohol that often fall under the whiskey banner?

At the moment, most people might accidentally refer to Scotch, Rye, Bourbon or Whiskey as Whiskey. They are all, though, a little different from each other. If you want to make sure that you celebrate in the correct style this year, then it might be worthwhile reading a bit more into what makes a Whiskey and what makes any of the other drinks possible.

The differences can be fairly minimal but somewhat stark, depending on what you are drinking. If you want to get the most out of each bottle that you pick up, then, use this knowledge.

International Whiskey Day: Scotch, Rye, Bourbon and Whiskey

  • Whiskey is the most common version, though you might know it instead as whisky depending on where you come from. Whiskey/whisky is made by using fermented grain, then allowed to age in a massive white oak cask. This allows it to come out that rich, loving brown look that we all know whiskey stands out for.
  • Scotch, meanwhile, is all about the Scottish equivalent – as the name may suggest. It’s made from malted barley, and it sits to age in oak barrels for at least three years. Often, though, it sits for a much longer period of time. Unlike whiskey, it’s common for Scotch to have a very distinctive smoky taste, rather than the variety available otherwise.
  • Bourbon is another fine choice of alcoholic beverage and it’s made from corn mostly. It has to be at least 51% corn; though other grains can be used in the process. It must be stored in a charred oak container, too, and no additive can be included into the bottle. Bourbon is among the most popular known forms of this type of beverage and is often very varied due to the sheer number of bourbon brands.
  • Rye is very similar to other drinks, though it is made using the rye grass normally found within wheat. It’s very powerful and tends to be made from at least 51% rye. It tastes very spicy and tends to have a very rich and enterprising taste, making it hard for some people to get used to drinking.

With this in mind, then, you should find it much easier to put together a fine collection of alcoholic beverages for International Whiskey Day. Just remember to read the label; you might wind up celebrating this fated day with the wrong kind of booze!

Impress Your Friends: Cooling Your Wine Like A Boss

For anyone who enjoys a nice bottle of vino, it’s very easy to get annoyed at those who ‘do it wrong’. For example, the art of chilling wine is very much a skill in itself – and it’s very easy to get that skill wrong. If you are someone who is new to the world of wine, you may not be 100% sure what kind of techniques work best for keeping your wine in fine condition.

Gwen Ihnat of The Takeout decided to find the best way to chill wine so she checked with a few expert friends of her. Some of her discoveries were very impressive indeed. So, what’s the best way to chill wine?

If you’ve made some plans for a night in with the friends and family, you want to get the wine just right. Long evenings and sunny days are just around the corner – so how can you make sure that you are on-point with regards to the best way to chill wine?

Nice and Simple

The best way to chill your wine, for those with strong memories and attention spans anyway, is to chill the wine for 20 minutes in the freezer. It’s recommended that you time it, maybe setting a smartphone alarm to make sure you don’t forget with brutal consequence later on down the line.

It’s the same for most wines – keeping them in a freezer for around 20 minutes can get it spot on that works very well, though so does simply leaving it in an ice bucket most of the time – especially when dealing with red wine.

Frozen Paper

Another comical but effective method is to get a batch of paper towels and wet them in the sink to get them nice and cold. Then, wrap the towels around the bottle of wine and stick that in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. By this time, the paper turns hard and almost ice-like, and creates a fantastic way to chill the bottle to the point of enjoyment.

The Mix

On her trips, though, Gwen heard arguably the strangest but most effective wine chilling method we’ve ever heard of. Basically, you get a wine bucket, fill it to about half-way with water, and then add some ice in on top of the water. Put the bottle in, spin it around in the mixture and you should get it cold in a matter of minutes!

While getting your water just right can take a lot of work, this helps to give you three simple methods to chill a wine bottle safely, quickly and without any issue!

Why Over-40s Should Give Up Ibuprofen

When we have a sore tooth, a sore jaw, a sore back…sore anything, inflammation is often part of the problem. This is why so many take anti-inflammatory and pain management tablets- Ibuprofen. These over-the-counter medications are taken by millions of people every day and can help us to get over a pain to get back on with our days. However, it turns out that Ibuprofen might not be such an advisable product to take for those over the age of 40…

Some studies show that it could have toxic properties for heart muscles, meaning that anyone over the age of 40 should take a deeper look at what they are taking. The FDA found in 2015 that ibuprofen comes with a few ingredients in there that, broadly, could cause problems with the heart. It could be even related to heart attacks and strokes – making it especially worthwhile dodging in your 40s!

What’s better – a sore head or a dead heart?

Many people instead turn to taking solutions like turmeric, instead, offering anti-inflammatory properties without that big warning needed on the bottle. Turmeric is a great solution for this, and can easily be taken due to its high polyphenol count making it very good for the body indeed.

Simply mix it in with a cup of warm water, some honey and some lemon juice and voila! It can be an excellent way to help alleviate that pain without taking in anything that, broadly, our bodies should be avoiding. Ginger, too, is a good source thanks to the fact it can stop inflammation at its source thanks to the power antioxidant effects, ensuring that inflammation and joint acidity can both be minimized and, when possible, neutralized entirely.

Another good and natural source is to use capsaicin, which is found in red peppers. It’s a very easy product to apply, either done so in a cream or a gel form, and can be a great way to help release pain in our joints and muscles.

So, while there are so many natural options to fight inflammation and give your body the help it needs to stay strong and healthy, you should empty your cupboard of such synthetic solutions. As ever, be sure to go and check with a medical professional and make sure you are making the right choice – but, past the age of 40, ibuprofen should probably be minimized and, if possible, not taken at all for the foreseeable future.
