Oscars Announce New “Popular Film” Category

Change is coming to the Academy Awards, it was announced on the Oscar’s official Twitter page. A new category is being designed to honor “outstanding achievement in popular film”.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences also revealed in a statement sent out to its members that the live broadcast would be shortened to 3-hours in length, with certain award categories (unknown as of yet) being announced during ad breaks. “To honor all 24 award categories, we will present select categories live, in the Dolby Theatre, during commercial breaks (categories to be determined). The winning moments will then be edited and aired later in the broadcast.”

With the eligibility requirements and other key details for the new category to be forthcoming, there has been heavy criticism for the move. It has been described as being ham-fisted at best and discriminatory at worst. The decision has been dubbed insulting as being popular has never before been seen as an artistic achievement.

The message seems to suggest that a popular product can’t be high art, or that a high-quality product can’t be popular, is insulting. And as such, many feel that’s what the Oscars do every year. This also solidifies the feeling among producers who worry that should their film become a blockbuster, it may ruin their artistic credibility.

With this year’s edition of the Academy Awards being the lowest-rated telecast on record, the board attempted the bridge the widening gap between films people want to see and the films the academy wants to reward.

Dubbed the “Popcorn Oscar”, the films likely make up the list of nominees for this category are bound to be predicted based on their worldwide box-office gross. This means blockbusters like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Deadpool 2, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, as well as their fan-favorite stars, will be guaranteed a presence at the ceremony.

Some say, the Oscars’ ratings are tanking for the same reason TV ratings are declining across the board: The outdated monoculture supporting it simply doesn’t exist anymore. Hence, this change doesn’t make Oscar voters seem more in touch, they argue, as all it does is make their elitism that much more clear. The Academy has a long reputation of snubbing hit films whose genres aren’t usually considered Oscar material.

Actor Rob Lowe perhaps best summed up everyone’s feelings, “The film business passed away today with the announcement of the ‘popular’ film Oscar,” he tweeted. “It had been in poor health for a number of years. It is survived by sequels, tentpoles, and vertical integration.”

Die Hard Wins Big Time (Finally)

With Die Hard being written off as a Christmas movie by John McClane himself, fans of the movie are naturally feeling their noses a touch out of joint. A classic Christmas movie for those who cannot stomach stuff like The Nightmare Before Christmas, it’s easy to see why so many people find it hard to agree with Bruce Willis in his assessment.

However, if you are feeling raw about this decision, you might be pleased to know that Die Hard was rated the best action movie of all-time recently. The likes of Lethal Weapon and Terminator gave it a good run for its money, of course. But, how can anything beat John McClane and his perma-white vest and cut-to-hell feet taking on some of the most maniacal Eastern Europeans you’ll likely see in cinema?

In the 80s and 90s, the sheer level of competition for such an accolade would have been suffocating. With the likes of Machete (albeit a comedy in many ways) and The Raid probably being the best modern equivalents, it’s easy to see why so many people are still dewy-eyed and nostalgic for the good old movies.

Thanks to the recent Entertainment Weekly vote, we can finally say that Mr. McClane and his jaunt through the Nakatomi Plaza to save everyone from having a rather ruinous festive period. Throw in the marriage dynamics, the awesome cat-and-mouse chase with the bad guys and his parlay with the coppers outside, and it’s easy to see why Die Hard remains such a fabled classic.

EW voted it the best action movie ever, and it was rated by Empire as the 29th best movie of all-time regardless of the genre. There are many reasons that many Die Hard one of the best action movies of the entertainment era, of course.

The plot is brilliant, the characters are awesome and the bad guy – Hans Gruber – might just be the best villain of all-time. Played by the amazing Alan Rickman (RIP), he manages to make sure that the movie has an edge to it where you worry that McClane might be up against it here.

What makes Die Hard so special?

From the amazing shoeless battles to the smart thinking of McClane to try and get the cops to notice the Plaza is in trouble, there are so many amazing things that take place in the movie. Really, given most action movies are absolute nonsense in terms of the plot, Die Hard stands out because it’s actually a good plot.

Is it mind that a man in a pair of slacks and no socks can wipe out a platoon of some of the worst terrorists in the world? Just a touch. Is his accuracy absolutely outstanding for someone who isn’t a military sniper? Yes, mightily.

Does Mr. Rickman provide us with the best example of someone with a command of multiple accents? You bet.

Die Hard is a special film. You don’t need me to tell you the plot: you just need to watch an 80s masterpiece at work. There’s a reason it’s voted as the best of its kind: it stands out far above anything else from the 80s, 90s or any other action movie era.

John McClane, take a bow: you managed to create an entire industry trying to match your amazing feats on the screen. From Speed to Air Force One through to things like The Expendables, it’s so easy to see where the inspiration come from: the super-durable vents of the Nakatomi Plaza.

Biggest Trailers To Come Out of Comic-Con

Every year San Diego Comic-Con sees the release of many new film trailers and TV show peeks throughout the four-day event, and this year is no different. Movie studios and television stations hold panels to showcase upcoming properties. Some of what they are showing is exclusive to the con itself, but some are the worldwide debut of some of the most expected projects.

Here are the 8 biggest movie and TV trailers Comic-Con 2018 had to offer.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (season 7)

It’s hard to remember now, but not so long ago the only Star Wars movie or television show we had after the prequel trilogy was George Lucas’ animated series The Clone Wars. The show ran for six seasons under the guidance of Dave Filoni. To celebrate The Clone Wars’ 10th anniversary, Filoni hosted a panel at Comic-Con. Fans came to reminisce but were treated to a sweet surprise announcement that the series would be revived for a 12-episode season 7. Plus the first new Star Wars: The Clone Wars trailer and poster were revealed as well. The show will return on Disney’s streaming service, which is expected to launch in 2019.

Godzilla: King of Monsters

Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla film effectively rebooted the classic Toho monster property, and launched a new cinematic universe that will eventually see the iconic creature face off against King Kong. The second entry in Legendary and Warner Bros’ MonsterVerse arrived last year with Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island, a prequel introducing King Kong. Next, director Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of Monsters continues the story from Edwards’ film. A teaser trailer for Godzilla 2 was unveiled earlier this week, previewing the full trailer’s release during Comic-Con.

Dr. Who (Season 11)

He is coming back. The thing is he is actually a she now and has multiple companions this time around. That’s right Dr. Who, the long-running BBC Sci-FI is back and is changing things up a bit both in front and behind the camera.  With the start of season 11, Jodie Whittaker will be the first woman to play the Doctor, following Peter Capaldi’s departure in the 2017 Christmas Special. Meanwhile, behind the scenes, showrunner Steven Moffat stepped down, with Chris Chibnall taking the reins. Now we have the first look at this ever-evolving show.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald

This is the only trailer on the list that is not the first footage the general audience is seeing from the film. The thing is the trailer is so good and full of details that we can not skip it. This is the second chapter in what is still being planned as a five-movie series, that is acting as a prequel to the famous Harry Potter Saga. The Crimes of Grindelwald (as its subtitle implies) further brings the subplot from the first Fantastic Beasts movie – concerning the dark wizard Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) – into the center of things. It seems that Newt Scamander’s (Eddie Redmayne) story takes a darker and more dangerous turn in this film, but at least this time around he will have the help of none other than Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law)  himself.

Mayans (Season 1)

\

FX’s Sons of Anarchy, a gritty drama about the lives of those involved with a California-based motorcycle club, ran for seven seasons on the network from 2008-2014. And while Kurt Sutter’s Charlie Hunnam-starring, critically successful drama has been done for some time, it still inspires a dedicated fan base. As such, Sutter is returning with Mayans M.C., the spinoff series following JD Pardo’s Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes. After the Mayans M.C. pilot was reshot, the series was picked up by FX and is now moving forward. Now, ahead of the show’s Comic-Con panel on Sunday, the full Mayans M.C. trailer has been released.

Next Page: Superheros on both the big and the small screen.

Finally: Zombiland 2 Has An Official Green light By Sony

In 2009 Sony released Zombieland, a post-apocalyptic comedy about A shy student trying to reach his family in Ohio, a gun-toting tough guy trying to find the last Twinkie, and a pair of sisters trying to get to an amusement park as they join forces to travel across a zombie-infested America. The movie became a sleeper hit earning just over $100 million worldwide on a $24M budget.

Since its release, the film continued to build itself a cult following that craves a sequel. In the past few years, many rumors were spread around that a second movie is happening but most times the rumors were debunked by officials until now, that is.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story that Sony is moving forward with Zombieland 2 and have all the pieces in place. The sequel has been written by Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese who just came off panning both Deadpool scripts, and will be directed by Ruben Fleischer (who directed the first movie) , following his upcoming Venom project.

But fans will probably be more excited hearing that all four original cast members will be returning, such as Jessy Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin. They all signed on to the sequel.

The report indicates that Production is slated to begin in early 2019 with the intention of releasing Zombieland 2 sometime next October around the first film’s tenth anniversary.

President of Columbia pictures (film division of Sony Entertainment) Sanford Panitch had this to say about the project: ““This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time — and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail, These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing.”

He is not kidding about the actors being more in demand than ever, Woody Harrelson just came off a role in Solo: A Star Wars Story and the Oscar nomination for  Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. Eisenberg’s in the meantime starred in The Social NetworkBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the Now You See Me franchise since the first Zombieland. And let’s not forget Emma Stone who won an Oscar for her work in La La Land and can be next seen in The Favourite.

We will need to wait a while further until we will able to see the first trailer or get an official release date but the wait should be much more bearable for fans now that they know that the franchise is indeed returning to the silver

The Long Hollywood Tradition Between Mega Directors

With Avengers: Infinity War beginning to clean up at the box office, it’s no surprise that it’s been a major showbiz talking point. More importantly, though, it’s become a movie franchise so big that it smashed the likes of Star Wars. With the 19th and arguably best edition of the Marvel Cinematic Universe taking in as much as $640m worldwide, it’s become a major hit across the globe. Indeed, it even blows away “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” which hit around $529m worldwide.

As impressive as these figures are, more impressive is the fact that it’s allowed us to peek behind the Hollywood curtain for a moment. With both MCU and the masters at Lucasfilm both under the Disney banner today, it’s no surprise that this little tidbit has come out in the public. Lucasfilm’ President, Kathleen Kennedy, sent a wonderfully gracious note to Marvel to congratulate their achievement, completed with Rey passing over a lightsabre to Iron Man in celebration.

Indeed, this has apparently been a widespread Hollywood tradition. It started with George Lucas the old “Star Wars” director and his mate Steven Spielberg. Starting in 1977 when Spielberg used a full-page Variety advertisement to congratulate Lucas’ on Star Wars beating “Jaws” at the Box Office. It showed R2-D2, the lovable Star Wars droid, catching Jaws himself on his fishing hook.

Since then, we’ve seen some truly special ones come from both groups. For example, when “E.T.” became the superb hit that it was, Lucas responded with an ad of some of Star War’ main heroes lifting E.T. up into the air with a #1 sign.

This also happened in the 1990s, with ET passing on the crown to R2D2 When The prequels proved that Star Wars was here to stay.

Next time happened when James Cameron’ Titanic beat Star Wars. Gorge printed an add in the papers. It is actually the most elaborate one ever showing almost all of the Star Wars characters going down with the ship.

Later on, the Box Office crown went to another Cameron production – Avatar. So it was no surprise that he didn’t do anything then. But he did disappoint when Marvel’s The Avengers took the crown and didn’t post anything (He is known as someone who doesn’t like superhero films).

Good thing Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios is a good sport and decided to revive the tradition when Jurrasic World suppressed the Avengers in 2015 by a mere million dollars. This time though the tradition moved from the pages of the newspapers straight to social media.

Of course, Universal didn’t stay quiet when Star Wars took the crown for the third time, this time shattering the previous record by a staggering 40 million. The poster shows T-rex putting a gold medal on BB-8. Whats nice about it is also the fact that Steven Spielberg that began this tradition, was part of the congratulating team.

Nice to see the biggest directors out there congratulating each other and making Hollywood a friendlier place.

Avengers Set to Break Records

While some people (myself included, to an extent) are getting a little sick of the Marvel movies that seem to be released every second week, the new Avengers movie, Infinity War, looks to be a good one. Well, you would hope so anyway – given the incredible cost of the movie it’ll need to live up to the ridiculous hype surrounding it.

With as long as a decade needed to get to this point in the story, it’s absolutely right that this feels like the flagship end to what has been a remarkable (at point tedious) journey. With the fact that the likes of Captain America: Civil War cost a whopping $250m, and Age of Ultron at around $279m, there’s a bit of a discussion going around about how much is too much to make a movie.

Well, it would appear that at the moment this might break all records that are going around at the moment. Indeed, at the moment, Infinity War is expected to become the most significant movie of all time if you just go by the cost of it. Given the fact that this is the culmination of 18 movies and spin-offs and it carries one of the most star-studded casings we’ve ever seen, the cost kind of makes sense.

When you find out that MCU (Marvel Comic Universe), the group behind it, is worth an incredible $14bn, it’s easy to see why they can afford to take this kind of ‘risk’ and go for broke.

What’s The Damage?

According to the budgetary news we’ve heard from the likes of the Wall Street Journal, there’ around $300m on the table for IW. That’s a dizzying amount of cash, tying up with the likes of the Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End as a record production budget. The only movie that we could find that went beyond this was another PotC installment, Of Stranger Tides.

However, when you add in that Avengers 4 (working title obviously) was shot back-to-back with Infinity War, it’s likely that it could actually peak the OST costing.

However, the fact that it is already likely to be among the highest ever box office sales of all-time, it’s not actually that big a risk for MCU. Add in the fact that it was already expected to take around $255m in its opening weekend, meaning that it could even eclipse the incredible $247.9m brought in by Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015.

Indeed, it was also reported by the likes of Fandango that this was breaking some truly special records, with it out-selling the past seven movies in the Marvel Comic Universe COMBINED. With ticket sales already seemingly beyond double what Black Panther produced, too, this is sure to be a major pay-off for MCU.

With the premiere held on the 23rd April, we’re not far off seeing the release and making a huge impact on the movie industry. With all that waiting, then, will Infinity War live up to the hype?

If somehow you still hadn’t checked the trailer here it is:

Films You Should See This Week

This week is full of amazing Hollywood movies that you will surely appreciate and enjoy. They are some amazing motion pictures that will impress with their great features, unique visuals and tremendous attention to detail. With that in mind, we created a list to include some of the major films that you need to see this week.

Red Sparrow

Red Sparrow offers a very interesting approach towards spy movies. It’s a thriller and it focuses on women as weapons. The interesting thing here is that the main character is played masterfully by Jennifer Lawrence as she becomes a double agent and tries to overcome the system in order to win her true love.

The movie was created by the same director from the Hunger Games. As a result, he has a lot of experience in working with Jennifer Lawrence. And that works extremely well, to the point where it shows the unique benefits offered by Lawrence’s performance.

She shines in this role, and she actually manages to carry the movie. But the problem is that the overall movie is not as good, as the other characters have uneven performances, and the plot on its own can be quite convoluted. But it may still be worth it if you want a spy movie!

Death Wish

Death Wish is basically a remake of a movie of the same name made in 1974. The interesting thing about that movie is that it was about a Chicago Doctor who tries to be a vigilante when his wife and daughter are attacked by robbers. It’s an interesting movie with lots of action, and the concept feels great despite actually being a remake.

Yet maybe the best thing about the movie is that it’s starring Bruce Willis, which made a great comeback into the action scene, a genre he has been tackling for decades. And he is very good at it, just as always!

Foxtrot

Foxtrot may be just a drama film from Israel, but it has been received quite well all over the globe. It was even on the shortlist for the Oscar nominations this year too. Two parents learn that their child dies in the line of duty, and they try to uncover the truth of his death.

We get to see what their son did during the events and then we move onward to see what the family tried to do and how they tackled the entire process. It’s a very intense movie as it dives into the ongoing and neverending Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It also has many comic moments.

So if you want to see some really nice and fun movies, check these out right away. They are very fun and interesting, certainly some of the best out there right now. Plus, they do cater to different genres and everyone has something to watch thanks to them. You should totally give them a try and see if you like and enjoy their experience!

Dog Living In University Dorm Learns To Bark In Whispers at Night When Residents Are Sleeping

A pet is usually a person’s go-to friend, one that is loved by everyone. Dogs, especially, are considered a man’s best friend because of their ultimate loyalty and ability to feel human emotions. But sometimes, pets can be loud and thus become a disturbance in everyday human activities like working and sleeping. Such a scenario was seen recently in a college of Southern Illinois.

Dudley, who is a mix of the breeds Australian Shepherd and Border collie and is one year old, is a dog who lives in one of the dorm rooms of Greenville University in Illinois with his owners. The owners of Dudley are the dorm’s resident director Brian Gertler and his wife Katie Gertler. Dudley lives with his owners in an apartment in the Greenville University dorm for freshmen. Students of the university are not allowed to have pets but Brian Gertler can since he is a dorm director. They are a most adorable family.

From Loud to Unique

What Dudley inadvertently did to cause disturbance for the dorm residents was that he barked loudly at night when all the students were peacefully sleeping, hence waking them up at nights. Dogs are innocent creatures that do not have the best sense of time but Dudley, the extraordinarily intelligent dog, learned by way from his man-friend Gertler of keeping quiet at nights when everyone around him was deep asleep. He learned to bark in whispers!

When Dudley and Brian were at play during night-time, Dudley’s excited barking woke up the Greenville University students. Besides that, nobody in the college has any negative concerns regarding the dog. In fact, everyone loves him and he helps lighten the mood and brighten the environment around campus. He is everything ranging from a conversation-starter to an excellent fetch-player. Gertler himself says that dogs can be great ice-breakers and students often feel more comfortable warming up to the dog than talking to him. Since it is a freshman dorm, students can be nervous living away from home for the first time; dogs like Dudley make it easy for them.

Taping in to Existing Traits

How Brian Gertler found out a way to help the situation of Dudley’s barking disturbing the students at night was when Dudley’s barking quieted down one night while playing due to being winded from all the running and catching. Gertler realized that it is, in fact, possible for the mix-breed dog to bark silently, so he started training Dudley to bark in whispers.

Slowly and efficiently, Dudley learned how to not disturb the residents of the Greenville University dorm anymore. He was fully trained by his loving owner Brian Gertler to keep his voice down while playing fetch at night and now, finally, Dudley proves his genius by barking in whispers every time they play fetch at night.

Students are Greenville now have peaceful, undisturbed slumbers in the dorm. Dudley proved by learning his new lesson that dogs are the most considerate and affectionate animals who would try their best to provide comfort for their owners and their human friends.

Beware- Alien: The Covenant is Coming to Theaters

Alien, directed by Ridley Scott in 1979, is a combination of sci-fi and horror where a monster called Xenomorph was stalking the crew of the Nostromo. But that only lasted until Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) defeated this creature to the grave. At that point, this film had become a classic and a whole franchise was started. Three sequels were made throughout the ’80s and ’90s. Ridley Scott returned to the franchise in 2012 and started a prequel series in Prometheus, and later a follow-up,  Alien: Covenant.

Alien: Covenant, starring Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), shows a colony ship and its crew on a distant planet that looks like a really great place. As it turns out, it’s not so lovely after all.

Looking into Alien: Covenant, we will see that it fits into the overall franchise as a sequel to Prometheus. Waterston said: “I think it has elements of both films. Like, it’s got some aspects that are similar to Prometheus and then it does feel, in many ways, like a return to the original. But again, it’s its own thing, too, and sometimes I think describing things in those terms limits it in a way and gives the audience information it’s better for them not to have”.

When I first saw the original Alien, I didn’t even know what I was about to see, I had never seen a trailer or anything. My friend’s older brother put it on to traumatize us — which it did – and I think that will be the most fun way to watch this movie too — with fresh eyes. So I don’t like to give too much away about that. But obviously you look at IMDB, you know Michael Fassbender’s in it, so there is going to be a connection from Prometheus.”

Katherine Waterston’s colleagues in this movie will be Michael Fassbender as Walter, in addition to reprising his role as the Prometheus android David; Guy Pearce and Noomi Rapace will play Peter Weyland and Dr. Elizabeth.

There are not many details about the connection between Alien: Covenant and Prometheus  and the original Alien movie. Because Waterston didn’t want to say much about it, the movie will probably be a story Scott and Fox are trying to keep from fans all over the world so that they could go into Alien: Covenant with fresh eyes. That is one reason. Second is that there could be another movie before the prequel series connects to Alien. Scott did reveal his plans for potentially a third and fourth movie in the Alien series in which the last prequel will be directly connected to the first 1979 film.

After the rebooted series, starting with Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, there will most likely only be two more movies. But, it seems like Fox has another film in development: Alien 5, directed by Neill Blomkamp, which takes place after the event of Alien: Resurrection and it should complete Ellen Ripley’s story. There is a lack of details about the connection between Alien: Covenant and the original Alien but it shouldn’t bother us because Ridley Scott’s world is coming to us soon. Alien: Covenant will hit theaters in May next year.

Inspiring triumph of will in movies in past few decades

When it comes to movies, we all have our own favorites, depending on the mood and genre we love. But there are always some directors who manage to break that barrier and make great influential work, regardless of its genre. The list of those would be very huge, so we narrowed that list by picking couple of movies that have surely inspired many people around the globe, by telling stories about will and desire. If you don’t find your pick in this short list, we’ll make sure that it’s mentioned in the next occasion.

“Good Will Hunting” (Gus Van Sant, 1997)

Will Hunting is one of Matt Damon’s toughest roles ever; the role of a young mathematical genius with a tough history behind him. Even though he’s a mathematician, he has the tendency to be on the wrong side of the law and a part of street fights. This movie surely encourages a lot of people, because it shows how an everyday underachiever can turn everything around.

The most amazing scene would be the one during Will’s therapy sessions, accompanied by Robin Williams, where we realize that he’s slowly letting his guard down and his brilliance is going take over the things.

“The Pursuit of Happiness” (Gabriele Muccino, 2006)

This is the great real-life story about Chris Gardner who believes in the power of hard work and perseverance, and following that pattern he manages to quit the life that consisted of sleeping on the subway and becomes the millionaire founder of the brokerage house.

Even though is hard to be motivated in such situation, he finds the strength to study hard and after couple of years Gardner goes high up on the career ladder, from selling medical equipment to playing the huge role in financial world. This story is a good example proving that people should never give up, but try to fight their way through.
