What Is “Bandersnatch”? Here’s Why You Should Watch It

If you’ve been online in the past few days, chances are you’ve heard about the latest obsession from viewers of the Black Mirror Netflix series. We give you everything you need to know about the interactive special which the internet can’t stop talking about.

While fans of Black Mirror await its fifth season, the creators of the show released an interactive film titled Bandersnatch which has captured the attention of the internet and created debate whether it is a film or a game.

Set mostly in 1984, the film follows a young video game programmer named Stefan Butler (Fionn Whitehead), who is programming his own interactive video game called Bandersnatch which in turn is based off a novel by the same name by author Jerome F. Davies. As the story progresses, Butler begins to question his reality in the disturbed Black Mirror-style the show is renown for.

Arguably the most unique aspect of the special is that during different points of the episode, viewers encounter a “choose your own adventure” option where they are forced to make choices which affect the outcome of the story. Each time a decision is offered, viewers are given 10-seconds to choose which option to go with.

These choices include seemingly inconsequential things like choosing which cereal Butler eats, what kind of music he listens to, or more vital ones which determine how he reacts to certain situations. In each instance, a choice is automatically selected should the viewer fail to make a decision within the allotted 10-seconds.

Netflix announced that there are more than 1 trillion choice variations viewers can make for the film. The story has an approximate running time of 90-minutes which can vary for viewers based on their choices throughout the film. However, if a viewer takes the quickest route without opting for do-overs, they can get through the film in just 40-minutes.

Although some choices affect the story to a larger degree than others, everytime a choice is made, the story is nevertheless affected in some capacity. For example, when the viewer chooses which cassette tape Butler listens to, the music in the episode immediately parallels that in the scene. Each and every choice leads to other choices later on in the story, as well as to an ending. Netflix has stated there are “five main endings with multiple variants of each”.

Since the special was released on December 28th, viewers have debated whether Bandersnatch is a game or a video. Many argue that due to the interactive nature of the special it is more of a video than a film, while others decry their lack of emotional investment into the characters and events, unlike other Black Mirror episodes due to requiring to be focused on decision making throughout the video.

If users, however, prefer to watch it like a film, they can allow the 10-second timer to rundown each time and allow an option to automatically be selected for them. Netflix has not revealed how the choice is made when users do not select a choice, therefore it remains a mystery whether it is random or guided to an ending.

The fifth season of Black Mirror has been announced but due to Bandersnatch the release date has been pushed back to later in 2019.

For those unafraid of spoilers, Forbes created a walkthrough for how to navigate to all five possible endings.

Netflix Genres Boring You? Open Them Up Today

Netflix is, easily, one of the most popular online platforms used today. Millions of users curl up in front of their TV to watch their on-demand shows, when they want. While some of us complain that Netflix has too much choice, some people find it hard to choose. For example, their genre selections are, at best, poor. You can find it hard to really dig into what you wish to watch, which soon becomes an exercise in frustration.

To solve that problem, we recommend that you take a look at this easy to use Netflix genre cracker. This opens up thousands of new genres to look through when searching for movies. If you are sick of the same old genres giving you eyebrow raising returns, you can use this simple solution to open up the floor to some far more interesting movie choices.

Making the most of Netflix

To start off with, thanks to What’s On Netflix for coming across this awesome little trick. You will need to use a variety of specific codes to open up Netflix much more, giving you much more control over what you watch.

For example, if you wanted to find something very particular, you can. Mad genres appear, like “Bellydancing” and even “Campy Chinese Movies” – they have a little hidden sub-category for any kind of movie that you can think of. To make this work, all you need to do is type in the following URL:

https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/XXXX

All you need to do is swap out XXXX for the genre you wish to browse through, and voila. You can find all of the codes that you need online, making it easy to tap into over 70,000 hidden sub-genres. It’s very interesting, and makes it easy for you to make your Netflix experience a touch more specific.

Many of us spend hours just flicking through Netflix hoping to find something decent. With this, you make more or less certain that you can find something worth watching. However, opening up the floor so much will mean potentially making it even harder to choose. If you struggle to make a choice with the options already on Netflix, make sure you have a rough idea of the genre that you wish to watch.

Decision making falls through the floor when we have too many options, so try and limit in your mind the kind of movie youwish to watch. Then, start your browser search. If you go on with so many new options to pick from, you will likely just make what is already a hard choice even harder than it needs to be!

4 Netflix Originals You Will Probably Binge In 2019

For some time now, it’s been easy to see Netflix as one of the most exciting names in the entertainment industry. Forever producing amazing new content from their own studio, Netflix has far moved on from being a depository to watch on-demand TV as and when you wish. With a studio cranking out some truly tremendous content for 2019 and beyond, what can we expect from Netflix in the near future?

Central Park 5

This will especially be interesting to those of a political mindset. It’s built around the story of the Central Park Five; all sentenced to years in jail for attempted murder. Exonerated following confession, this TV series – directed by Ava DuVernay – is putting together a tremendous looking drama that shines a light on the sordid story that took place here.

This four-episode series is well worth looking out for, especially thanks to a certain someone’ proclamations about the case.

The Last Dance

Another interesting TV series about to come to Netflix is based around basketball star Michael Jordan. It’s going to focus on the basketball legend, who became a legend of competitive sport with his performances for the Chicago Bulls back in the day.

It’s going to be taken on by the excellent Jason Hehir, so we can expect that this will be able to make a positive story come to life. Jordan is easily one of the most influential sportsmen of the modern era, and is a wonderful example of what can be achieved.

Jinn

Cashing in on the substantial love for the supernatural at the moment, 2019’ Jinn is going to really tap into that in the right way. It’s six episodes long, and is going to focus on a group of teenagers who want to try and stop the spirit, Jinn, from being able to wipe out the planet.

It sounds very interesting, and with Mir-Jean Bou Chaaya behind it, it’s likely to be very fun for all of those looking to see what it has to bring to the table. Definitely worth your time if you are looking for a new supernatural show to enjoy.

The Umbrella Academy

Set in the world made up by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way, The Umbrella Academy is another comic book adaption turned ‘real’. It’s based around an America where JFK is never gunned down, and it’s going to star some pretty big names in it like Ellen Page and Mary J. Blige. It’s sure to be exciting and if you ever spent any time reading the comic book series then you’ll realise just why there is so much excitement around this at the moment.

It’s going to be arriving in 2019, and is written and produced by Steve Blackman. Definitely one to keep an eye out for.

So, what are you most excited by? With so many interesting stories set to be on their way to Netflix, what will you be looking to add to the list of shows that you presently watch?

Get Your Popcorn Ready for these Hit Shows in the Big Screens

New versions of “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Wonder Woman” are some of the potential blockbusters that are going to break records in theaters this year. But maybe the biggest news yet is that one TV show will be coming on big screens in the first week of September this year. The reason for this is that Marvel Television and ABC Television recently partnered with the giant movie screen company Imax Corp. The upcoming superhero series Inhumans will first be available in cinemas even a couple of weeks before it comes to homes and our little screens.

This could be the biggest and the boldest move yet because shows for the small screen and movies for the big screen already have some fuzzy lines between them. There is a pretty big wave of critical prestige that TV is enjoying. Movies used to have a cultural cachet that has now been taken over by the television screen. Featuring some of the biggest stars, Netflix’s “The Crown” and HBO’s “Westworld” look fairly expensive and seems to be a big budget movie. Ted Mundorff, chief executive of Landmark Theatres said: “Production values are fabulous on the small screen right now, so they translate to the large screen. If you want to see ‘Game of Thrones’ on the big screen, that’s pretty awesome.”

In the age where entertainment options at home are growing, both of these industries are having big challenges when it comes to the battle for audience’s attention. This comes at a time when TV is having a big push.

In the middle of a glut of original programs that have high quality, television companies are trying to find some ways to build hype around their new shows. Over 500 scripted shows are being prepared for this year for streaming services and TV. Cable network FX has estimated that it is about 200 less than in 2015.

Because the box office is becoming highly unpredictable, theater owners are hoping to diversify their businesses and are trying to fill their seats during the slow periods like the autumn months. In Imax, they really don’t like these gaps in the release schedule because they almost entirely rely on the major studios and their big spectacle movies. At the time when Inhumans will have its debut, the only potential blockbuster following it is the horror remake It by Warner Bros. Imax has around 1,200 theaters and they can’t say for sure how many of them will play Inhumans, but as it is expected, it will push for a worldwide release. Benjamin Mogil, an entertainment industry analyst with the financial services firm Stifel said: “The push Imax is making with Marvel for ‘Inhumans’ is indicative of a need to push out to content beyond movies.”

When auditoriums tend to go empty, theater owners played alternative programming like concerts, opera and sports such as professional basketball and football. This has been going on for several years now. But when that wasn’t enough, they expanded to include entertainment like major news events and competitive video gaming.

After the success of bringing popular small-screen shows to the multiplex, executives of big theater chains are looking forward to more TV shows that will come to their big screens. There are some shows that already appeared in cinemas like BBC’s Doctor Who and Sherlock andalso HBO’s Game of Thrones.
