Without doubt, one of the most painful parts of modern life is hearing about people with cancer. It is one of the most ruthless illnesses, very hard to get over seeing someone go through. For one 12-year-old boy, Daniel Coalner, though, his cancer battle was especially challenging. However, young Daniel is a fine example that you can overcome even the worst illness and still go on to do amazing things in life.
Using His Talent
A talented pianist, he got the chance to take himself all the way to Carnegie Hall!
Considered a prodigy, his illness was a major setback. However, he never knew about his talent until after his illness; he started taking piano lessons after he had successfully beat the illness. Take a look at the video below, and look at his fantastic play on the piano. He plays live on the show at ABC, and impresses the crowd with his wonderful, natural talent.
He got the chance to play at Carnegie Hall aged just 12, despite the setback of his illness. Many musicians play their entire career without getting near such a stage!
What did Danny think of the whole experience?
“Well, really it was just absolutely incredible,” he began.
“The piano was magnificent, much better than upright at home! The acoustics was amazing. Everything just…came together beautifully.”
Speaking to his parents on GMA, they were equally proud of the wonderful achievements of their son.
“Well, just not just proud, just incredibly blessed to see Daniel healthy, happy and able to do something he absolutely loves.” they told GMA.
Daniel underwent aggressive therapy at a very young age, where, as his parents put it they “bring you to the point of death and hope that they kill all of the bad cells and leave enough of the good ones for you to recover.”
Thankfully, due to the great work of the people down at Akron Children’s Hospital, Daniel made a full recovery and kicked the illness into the long grass.
That’s not all; he even got the chance to use his skills as an organist when he went to St. Patrick’s Cathedral. This is a young man with an exceptional talent, and a ravenous appetite for music. What did he make of the cathedral, then?
“It was just absolutely amazing there. Being able to control the huge wall of sound that covers the entire cathedral was just incredible.” Daniel said. Quizzed on how he was going to top such achievements aged just 12, for once he didn’t know!
“I honestly have no idea. Going to St. Patrick’s cathedral and Carnegie hall in one day, that’s a pretty good day for a 12-year-old. It’s a pretty great day!”
