Donald Trump And His Science

Growing up, I used to listen with part-wonder and part-bemusement at some of the things I’d hear Ronald Raegan had once said. My father grew up in the United Kingdom but got to pick up on a lot of the ‘greatest hits’ of one of the more controversially-spoken Presidents of the USA.

As I was growing up to get more involved in the world outside of my toy box, I used to watch on with embarrassment at George Bush Jr. I’d feel equally embarrassed for my own nation’s leader at the time, Tony Blair, standing there like the best mate who was only invited out of guilt.

Today, though? It would appear that the current President might be among the most outrageous yet. Here are just some of his statements which fly in the face of facts which aren’t even really contestable any longer. Science is always changing and fluid, and skepticism is usually a good thing. However, some of these takes? You’d get laughed out of your earliest science classes for stuff like the following…

Super Stealth

“You like the F-35?” Trump said at a military briefing in Puerto Rico in November 2017, “You can’t see it. You literally can’t see it. It’s hard to fight a plane you can’t see.”

Hahahaha. He’s become someone who uses the term “literally” in literally the wrong way. Donald my friend, you might mean figuratively. You can quite literally see these planes, my friend. It’s not hard.

Causing Cancer One Lumen at a time

“Remember, new ‘environment-friendly’ lightbulbs can cause cancer. Be careful – the idiots who came up with this stuff don’t care.” Proclaimed the leader of the free world.

Yeah, a lot of things cause cancer that we can only know about. Smoking. Eating junk food. Constant sunlight on our skin. Light bulbs though? That seems a bit of a stretch.

Nuclear Warming

When a man like Donald Trump sits with a fellow intellectual heavyweight like Sean Hannity, you take notice. Speaking to Hannity on Fox News in July 2018, Trump said: “I know President Obama said global warming is our biggest problem and I would say that no, it’s nuclear warming is our biggest problem by a factor of about five million.”

He said a similar thing in 2015 when campaigning across Indiana, when he said: “I believe global warming is the single biggest problem in our country, but it’s made of the nuclear variety.”

Nuclear warming.

Jet Fuel Can’t Melt … Asbestos

There are many, many things which could have eventually stopped the dreadful September 11th terror attacks. However, when Donald Trump tweeted in 2012 that “If we didn’t remove incredibly powerful fire-retardant asbestos & replace it with junk that doesn’t work, the World Trade Center would never have burned down,”, that was a bit of a stretch.

I’m not sure if asbestos would have stopped them burning down. It would have probably left a good chunk of the local populace with asbestosis, though. Kinda expensive to cure – but cheap to die from!

Asbestos would have stopped the War on Terror, you see. Some of these statements are just…yeah. Come on now.

If that is not enough for you, Here is Trump bragging that he got a natural instinct to science last month:

Will POTUS Trump Lose His Hollywood Star?

For a celebrity, few things can be more damning to be told: losing your Hollywood Star. Easily one of the most important accolades that a celebrity can get, the fact that you can actually lose your star is a major kick in the teeth. Well, it looks like one person might be finally about to stand up to the President of the United States, Donald Trump, in the most innocuous way: removing his Hollywood star.

While we suspect that the Teflon-infused POTUS will just laugh it all off and make some wild comments about it on Twitter, it’s nice to see the celebrity world take a bit of a stand for once. The celebrity world is loaded with a lack of fire when it comes to making a political message stand out, and it’s nice to see self-preservation take a back seat for a change.

The five-member West Hollywood City Council has apparently voted unanimously to have the star removed from the ground. While the council lacks the authority to do so itself, it intends to try and send out a formal message to Eric Garcetti, the Mayor of Los Angeles, to see if he’ll do something about it. They also messaged the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, the key decision maker, and the Los Angeles City Council, to push for the star to be binned.

Citing all manner of reasons to remove the star, including “disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country,” it’s likely that this will fall on deaf ears.

According to John D’Amico, the West Hollywood Mayor, this isn’t to do with political affiliation, but that the star is an “honor” and that when one belittles and attacks minorities, immigrants, people with disabilities or women—the honor no longer exists.”

Turning Up the Heat

While such superficial battles won’t make one bit of difference in the long-run, it’s nice to see a bit of backlash against Trump. The Walk of Fame star that he has in Hollywood has already been the victim of vandals, and was even chipped away at by someone with a pickaxe. It’s also been spray-painted with Nazi imagery and various other profane stickers, so it might just be for the best to remove the star in the long run.

Given that other stars in the past have not been removed, though, it’s not likely to happen. According to ex-President and CEO f the Chamber, Leron Gubler, it’s not something to consider. Speaking in 2015 regarding the removal of Bill Cosby’s star, Gubler said: “once a star has been added to the Walk, it is considered a part of the historic fabric of the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

If that’s the case, expect this bit of drama to carry on for a good while yet.

Trump in Israel: The Most Embarrassing Moment So Far…

President Trump’s visit to Israel has just begun, but already things are going very wrong for the small country’s reputation. After a leading radio station was too keen to interview the president and ended up interviewing an impostor, the reception at the airport wasn’t much better.

During the official reception at the airport many politicians and public figures lined up to greet the American President. Among them was the Israeli controversial Member of Parliament Oren Hazan.

Trump slowly made his way down the line to meet over a dozen people, all of whom seemed to understand the protocol that you have just a few seconds to say hello. Trump’s encounter with Hazan was definitely bizarre. As you can see from the video, Hazan even pulls Trump in close with a dominant and overpowering handshake, something that Trump has used repeatedly on people.

Hazan then broke protocol completely and took his cell phone from his pocket and insisted on taking a selfie photo with the President. Israeli Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu who was with his back to the occurrence became aware of it and tried to shove Hazan’s hand away and disturb the photo but was too late.

Hazan was quick to upload the photo to his twitter account.

Shocking! Israeli Reporter too Keen on Interviewing Trump

As President Donald Trump visits Israel, the local media is on extra high alert. As always, every reporter wants to be the one who interviews the leader of the free world, despite common knowledge that interviews with the president are scheduled in advance, and the president seldom gives interviews to local media outlets.

Thinking that he is the luckiest reporter in Israel, Arel Segal, was sure that Trump was willing to give him an interview while being on Airforce 1 while enroute to Israel from Saudi Arabia. Prior to the interview, his co-reporter was sceptic regarding the interview and the technical ability to actually conduct an interview from the plane, Segal claimed it was possible and the interview started.

The interview

The interview began fairly well with the reporter and the President exchanging formalities, but got out of hand after a few seconds during the third question. President Trump explained his desire to broker a peace deal and mentioned different ideas including one from an Israeli radical right winged public figure. At the end of the question the interview that lasted 90 seconds was terminated.

Turns out that the “president” was an impostor that had nothing to do with the official presidential delegation and was definitely not the President himself.

Segal later acknowledged the blunder and said that while he understood during the third answer that he was being played, he feared to confront the impostor and terminated the interview very politely stating that it was a very delicate situation and he was balancing between the fact that he was dealing with an impostor and the slim chance that it could have been the president and he didn’t want to risk US-Israel relations.

Big Art Strike on Inauguration Day

Donald Trump will have his inauguration on January 20th 2017, where he will become 45th sworn president of the United States. A group of 130 critics and artists will use this event to make a protest. They signed a petition in which cultural institutions around the country are being called to close for the whole day.

This protest, J20 Art Strike, requires theaters, concert halls, galleries, museums, non-profits, schools and studios to stop with their everyday business for 24 hours and try to resist the “normalization of Trumpism ― a toxic mix of white supremacy, misogyny, xenophobia, militarism, and oligarchic rule,” as organizers called it. On that day, creative citizens are being invited to go on the streets and protest against the role of such cultural spaces.

The petition states:” We consider Art Strike to be one tactic among others. Like any tactic, it is not an end in itself, but rather an intervention that will ramify into the future. It is not a strike against art, theater, or any other cultural form. It is an invitation to motivate these activities anew, to reimagine these spaces as places where resistant forms of thinking, seeing, feeling, and acting can be produced. However you choose to respond to this call, Art Strike is an occasion for public accountability, an opportunity to affirm and enact the values that our cultural institutions claim to embody.”

Barbara Kruger, Cindy Sherman, Joan Jonas, Dread Scott, Trevor Paglen and Simone Leigh are just some of the many artists who signed the petition. Also, a few critics like Chris Kraus, Lucy Lippard and Hilton Als decided to participate as well. But, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in Los Angeles and the Museum of Modern Art in New York, decided to stay open during this protest on the inauguration day. The New York Times got an email from Miranda Carroll, the director of communications in LA County Museum of Art:” Our entire program and mission, every day, is an expression of inclusion and appreciation of every culture.”

Although many of the art world inhabitants uphold and believe in the J20 Art Strike mission, also think that it is very important that art institutions stay open on January 20th. Jonathan Jones, the Guardian art critic doubts the protest’s effectiveness. He wrote:” Such a protest can only help the participants feel good about themselves. It is at best a way of saying ‘not in my name,’ and cannot conceivably do anything to curb Trump or ensure his electoral defeat next time around. Let’s face it: art and serious culture are completely marginal to American life. Trump’s victory proves that. Closing museums is not likely to have any impact on those who support him. With all due respect, they might be affected a lot more if reality television shows went on strike.”

There is only a few days before The Inauguration Day, so creative individuals and cultural institutions need to ask themselves if they will participate in this art protest and will it have any effect. Those who decide to go out on the streets will absolutely have some very gifted thinkers and artists by their side.

One thing is certain; it is going to be one difficult day.

Trump Installation on Walk of Fame

As we all know the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, not only as a politician, but also as an American celebrity, the anonymous L.A. based street artist called Plastic Jesus selected the real estate mogul on the Hollywood Walk of Fame to make his new and bizarre art installation. A week ago, visitors of this world famous tourist attraction stumbled upon a miniature concrete wall surrounding the star of Donald Trump, clearly separating it from the rest of the walk.

This small sculpture is surrounded by a tiny barbed wire, American flags at its corners and some “Keep Out” sings. It’s a direct hit to Trump’s campaign promise to build a wall all along the Mexican border. Plastic Jesus said: “There’s been a lot of personal attacks on Donald Trump, both politically and by artists. I think really what we should be focused on is attacking ridiculous policies that will damage the US.”

As Donald Trump became an usual mocking subject in modern political art, his star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, made in 2007, has become a target this year. There were numerous acts of vandalism, even the recent case with swastika, and humans and their dogs spitting, peeing and defecating on this famous tile. A couple of months ago, CNN wrote: “Not even Bill Cosby‘s star draws as much controversy here as the one belonging to Donald Trump.” The work of Plastic Jesus was installed only for two days there.

The artist who wanted to remove the work after it grabbed so much attention in the area, said: “It was attracting a huge crowd of people flocking to it to photograph themselves with this wall. Edward Scissorhands was getting a bit upset because it was getting way more attention than he was, so he attacked it!”

This was not the first time that Plastic Jesus put Donald Trump’s image in his art. Several months ago, this street artist made installations in city streets of L.A., New York, Chicago and Washington, adding metal parking signs saying “No Trump Anytime”. Also this year, people could also see Plastic Jesus’s “Kardashian Parking Anytime” piece.

During the Republican debate in Southern California in September last year, Plastic Jesus created a series of $100 bills with Trump’s orange coloured visage, wrapped in currency straps saying “completely worthless”. The artist commented: “Things like human rights, equality, freedom, and law and order—all of these things have improved drastically over the last few decades. I think Trump will actually set this country back about 30 years. The US is made great by immigrants—to try and to build a wall… it’s just ludicrous.” He reminded us that he has immigrated to the U.S. from the U.K. nine years ago.

Magazine Vanity Fair says that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce denies rumors about the Hollywood Historic Trust to reconsider removing Donald Trump’s tile because of all the negative attention, since it was first placed. We just have to wait and see will this star with a miniature concrete wall change their mind.
