The Dirtiest Place on a Plane? Not What You’d Expect

When we go on a plane, we’re always looking around with a bit of edge at who we are surrounded by. Before long, the sniffling kid comes along, sneezes the whole 8-hour journey, and leaves your ‘romantic weekend’ in absolute disarray as you spend your time in New York sitting on the loo.

While it might not always be so drastic, planes are dirty places. However, most of the time, the dirties parts of a plane ride don’t come from where you would expect. In fact, according to a new consumer watchdog program on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), “Marketplace”, some of the dirtiest surfaces and locations on a plane are quite a shock.

Indeed, the show found that headrests and the seat pockets are among the grimiest parts of an airplane journey. For all of those who spend the whole journey sitting with your head up against the headrest, don’t panic. You might just need to sit forward a tiny bit more in future!

The episode which disclosed this was shown on October 26th, and instantly raised a lot of debate about the cleanliness of an airplane. Their team took flights between Ottawa and Montreal eighteen times, flying with Porter, WestJet and Air Canada. With over 100 surface samples taken, the results they came back with were pretty staggering.

It was then studied by Karen Warriner, a microbiologist at the University of Guelph. She checked out the samples, and found that yeast and mould were present on the majority of the flights undertaken. Other dirty points on your plane journey include:

  • Seat belts.
  • Tray tables.
  • Washroom handles.

So, uh, keep that in mind next time you happen to be going for a flight. Indeed, the study came to some pretty interesting conclusions.

What did the study find?

  1. 33% of seatbelts – one third – came with mold and yeast on them.
  2. Washroom handles all contained bacteria as well as high aerobic counts.
  3. Seat pockets had significant volumes of coliforms, mold and E. coli.
  4. Tray tables were also high in mold and other forms of bacterial count.
  5. Headrests were dirtiest, with bacteria, E. coli and the highest aerobic count.

Aerobic counts are a form of bacteria which the Food and Drug Administration rates as a measure of microorganism within a specific product.

In the show, staff for the airlines content that there “simply wasn’t enough time” to carry out the full disinfecting of the full aircraft prior to re-usage. That shines an interesting light on the capacity and overworking taking place within the industry. Can more be done to change that? Here’s hoping.

For now, though, it’s interesting to note that many parts of an airline considered to be the grimiest aren’t – it’s always the things you least expect, right?

The Most Stunning Libraries Around The World

If you were to speak to someone of a generation prior to the present, you might hear them talk about libraries. While I won’t pretend that ‘millennials’ don’t know what a library is, some people will have spent little to no time in one. What’s the point? The internet is like the biggest library in the world – one you can access whenever you want, right?

Not really. Libraries are places of unique learning, companionship and considered debate. They are also some of the most stunning architectural works you will ever see. Don’t believe me? take a look into the following libraries from across the world, then.

Strahov Library

Among the most amazing libraries of the ‘normal’ world is that of the Strahov Library in Prague. This amazing location contains over 200,000 different volumes, and has maintained that beautiful and enriching design – even after severe bombardment back in the 1740s.

Today, it’s still a fine place to come and read a book and, architecturally, will be among the most amazing libraries that you ever sit within.

Ottobeuren Abbey

The first German abbey library that we wish to mention is the stunning opulence of Ottobueren Abbey. It’s a tremendous place to spend time; a rich and intimate location that holds many books and objects at one stage, it held as many as 10,000. It’s also a location where some amazing concerts take place, with sounds from some of the most amazing organs found across the continent will be heard.

Library of the Seitenstetten Abbey

Among the finest in Austria, this amazing building is the perfect peak of regality: a fine blend of blue and gold to help create the most meaningful and impressive image possible. It was founded in 1112, and today is surrounded by a beautiful garden with over 100 different kinds of rose to be enjoyed.

The Library of Wiblingen Abbey

One of the most stunning abbey libraries in the world, this German work of art is a must-see. The amazing artwork within is incredible, and it’s stood the test of time in terms of detail. The amazing curved nature of the building makes sure that it sticks out immediately.

A fine example of the rococo style of the past, these amazing works are easily some of the finest in the abbey library industry. Be sure to check this out next time you happen to find yourself in Germany; it’s a library well worth the diversion.

The Admont Abbey Library

This stunning piece of work is found in Austria, and is the largest monastery library on the planet. It’s fantastic, and contains a whopping 48 windows to let in plenty of light – and illuminate the simply incredible detail which is etched into each and every wall of the building.

It’s a stunning place to spend your time, and a decadent place to learn about the world. As far as grandiose libraries go, you would do well to find one more impressive than this.

So, which one will you choose to visit first? If you find it hard to stay quiet in a library, the beauty of each of these should help to stun you into silence!

Watch: The Shortest Passenger Flight In the World!

For anyone who is used to flying, one of the most annoying parts of the journey is the time that it takes. Some flights can feel needlessly long, as if they were drawn out needlessly. If you want to experience a flight that is over more or less as quickly as it has begun, then you might want to take the trip to Scotland.

A quick trip to Westray will give you the chance to enjoy a truly enjoyable experience. This route takes you between the two Orkney Islands of Westra and Papa Westray, allowing you to enjoy a flight that lasts for just around one minute. Some say a minute and a half, as is the schedule, but it’s usually a fair bit quicker than that. Not many flights can shave off more or less a minute from the journey, after all!

This amazing little flight is the shortest passenger flight in the world that you can actually take. Indeed, the quickest flight along this amazing little trip is just 53-seconds. It’s taken part by using Loganair, a Scottish regional airliner that serves the Highlands and islands areas.

The flights first started up in 1967, and since then has become a popular visiting spot for aviation enthusiasts. The flight occurs daily, and it’s going to take you around 2.7km to complete the journey. In fact, this is only as long as the Edinburgh Airport runway!

Short yet Swift

At just £17, too, you’ll find that you would struggle to get public transport for cheaper in many parts of Scotland today. You simply need to contact the Loganair team if you wish to book the flight, as you are unable to do so from a standard travel agency or anything like that.

It was commonly flown by Pilot Stuart Linklater, who flew it an incredible 12,000 times – perhaps more. He was the record-holder for the fastest flight, too. You’ll mostly find the flight to be loaded with people checking out the awesome archaeological sites that you will find on the islands, though it’s often used for medical purpose as well.

The flight often is carried out using a Pilatus Britten-Norman BN2B-26 Islander. If you want to enjoy a unique and enjoyable experience that takes longer to board than it does to actually fly, then you should almost certainly book up the shortest flight in the world and try it out for yourself!

Need a New Activity? Consider Cow Cuddling

As one of the most hilarious and placid animals on the planet, the cow is a uniquely enjoyable animal to spend time around. Like all animals, though, a cow can be hard to spend time around for long without feeling at least a little uncomfortable: especially if you aren’t used to being around cows.

However, if you want to get over that problem, for the mere price of $300, you could cuddle a cow for an hour and a half.

That’s right – cow cuddling is now officially a very expensive activity that you can take part in. Hugging a massive cow might be one of the best ways to improve your mental health, apparently, and it’s become a very important part of the wonderfully expensive “wellness” industry that has become so strangely popular.

Thanks to PubMed, we can say that this kind of activity is now a popular thing to do with your time. Animal interaction is supposed to be good for our mental health and can go a long way to making sure we can recover from mental stress and strain. If you wish to take part, then a trip to the Mountain Horse Farm in New York is the place to start. You can play with them, brush their coats or simply pet the cow – or hose if you prefer.

According to the official website: “Cows have a body temperature that is slightly higher than humans and their heart rate is lower than ours. Cuddling up with a cow, feeling that lower heart rate and higher body temperature, is very relaxing,”

So fear not: there is a genuine science behind this. It’s not some weird idea that has been concocted by farmers to charge people comical sums of money to hug a barnyard animal.

Unorthodox but Outstanding

Not only does it help us to connect with nature in a way that many of us simply cannot in the modern world, it also makes it easy for us to communicate with said animals. The website notes that ‘They will pick up on what’s going on inside and sense if you are happy, sad, feel lost, anxious or are excited, they will respond to that without judgment, ego or agenda.’ – and that it can bring a sense of healing and comfort to the body that simply would not be attainable otherwise.

For $300, you can get a 90-minute session which is sure to bring about some rather comical personal experiences. For an hour, you would pay around $75. You can also bring a friend with you, and you can enjoy the cuddling of a cow together.

Odd? Yes. Therapeutic? Extremely. It’s an odd experience, but there appears to be something genuine about it given the immensely positive nature of the feedback it receives. Why not try it out?

Best Job Ever? A Greek Island is Hiring A Babysitter for 55 Cats

The fight between Dog People and Cat-people will probably never be over as the ones that prefer the cat are often mocked for their choice of a four-legged friend. If you are feeling down because of it and in need some feline love we have some good news for you as now you can actually get paid to stroke, snuggle, and just generally hang out with a bunch of cats. Not only that, but you get to do it on a Greek island.

It’s just like the Mamma Mia movie, but instead of Meryl Streep going through her history with a song, there are a lot of loving cats.

You really have to enjoy the company of cats cause this job will require to watch over 55 of them. The job takes place on a ‘small paradise’ island called Syros, and involves running a cat sanctuary while the owner is away.

The job was shared on Facebook by God’s Little People Cat Rescue, and asks for ‘a mature and genuinely passionate cat lover who knows how to handle many cats and would love their company’.

The post goes on saying “I am looking for someone who can take over the daily running of my Greek cat sanctuary in my absence. You will have 55 cats in your care and need to be able to overview them all + feed and medicate (big added bonus if you’re trained vet. nurse!). [sic] You will be expected to take the cat to the vet in case of illness and therefore will need to be able to drive a manual car. Apart from feeding the cats the cats will also need heaps of love and attention.”

The best part is that Not only do you get to spend your days surrounded by fluffy cuteness, but you also have your living expenses paid for. The job offers “a fully paid (incl. water & electricity) semidetached modern tiny house with it’s own garden (direct view to the Aegean Sea) plus a salary.”

The downside is that according to the post they don’t get many visitors and the person who will take the job will have to be fine to be alone for that time. “We are located in a secluded nature preserved area which is very tranquil and quiet in winter time but busy during the summer. You’ll no doubt thrive best if you are the type of person who appreciates nature and likes tranquility – and rest comfortably in your own company. That said, you’ll never feel lonely in the company of the cats and you’ll be expected to live with a small handful of cats in your house.” She is right about it, that is for sure.

The employment starts in October and lasts a minimum of six months, with an introductory unpaid two-to-four weeks at the start of the role. If you are interested you can check all the details you need here. Don’t forget to bring a rope and a red laser.

Boeing: Two Hour London-NYC Flight in The Works

For years, I’ve wanted to go to New York. As I mentioned in a recent post, though, I was more or less petrified with the concept of flight for a long, long time. Even now, when the concept of flight is not quite so scary to me, I find it hard to get on flights to places like the United States.

The time that it takes to get there is just quite off-putting, and it does make it hard for me to drum up the enthusiasm to go. Well, it would appear that Boeing has heard my complaints – they have introduced the concept of a two-hour flight from New York City to London.

While nowhere near here yet, the fact they feel bold enough to say this in public is definitely a good sign. At the moment, the record flight speed was around 5h13m. That’s still pretty damn fast, but not quite as fast as people want to get it down to. Indeed, the aim is to get it even faster than the famous Concorde aircraft.

Boeing aims that, one day, they’ll be able to create a hypersonic airliner that could hit barely believable speeds of Mach 5 – around 3,800mph – meaning that you would be traveling at around 5x the speed of sound. While this is all very much in the concept stage – no name is announced for the aircraft – and that Boeing warns this could be a 20-30 year wait, it’s still exciting to hear it spoken about.

At the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in Atlanta, Boeing produced some renderings of the new aircraft to show the world. Naveed Hussain, the Vice President of Boeing’ Aeromechanics division, said: “We’re excited about the potential to connect the world faster than ever before,

“Although technology and regulatory challenges are ahead, Boeing has been studying hypersonics for over six decades, which makes us the right company to bring this technology to market when the world is ready.”

An exciting future

Another person who is very much interested in what is to come is that of Stuart Craig. Craig is an assistant professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering and is part of the team at the University of Arizona. Speaking to NBC News, he said: “We’ve been striving for this hypersonic technology for the better part of half a century, but in recent years, advances in computational technology and materials technology have made it much more in grasp.”

While we’ve already enjoyed supersonic air travel 15 years ago, the Concorde was simply not ready to be flown in the way that was intended. Retired for “commercial reasons”, the aircraft was finished off. This is despite the aircraft going from New York to London in two hours and 52 minutes, 59 seconds.

Sadly, it won’t be until I’m probably beyond the age where I want to fly when this baby gets on the market. For those who love flying, though, this should be a development worth keeping an eye on.

Statistics: UK Summer 2018 Holidays Locations

Every summer, the people of the UK decide to get up and get out. The UK might turn into a stunning place in the summer, but few things beat a trip to many parts of Europe, the Caribbean or the Americas. For that reason, we wanted to take a look at some of the most popular tourist destinations this year for the major UK city dwellers.

Where are the people of each major city flying off to this summer? What seems to be the hit experience? With so many of us now booking up last minute holidays, where can you expect to see everyone going?

According to online travel agency Loveholidays, they found that some of the major spots for those in London, for example, included Jamaica, Cyprus, Morocco, and Turkey. Paris, of course, is still high on the list. Jamaica, Cyprus, Morocco, and Turkey, though, appear to be some of the most popular take-off destinations for those living in the capital at this moment in time.

Other popular destinations were noted by their North/South divide. For example, people from the North are more likely to head to places which are nearby, familiar and tried-and-tested: the Balearic Islands, for example. Southerners, though, are more likely to go for more ambitious places like Sri Lanka or St Lucia. It’s quite interesting to see the divide.

What is interesting is that those in London are far less likely to hit up two major European last-minute hot spots: Croatia and Bulgaria. Among the most beautiful parts of Europe, they are a surprising exclusion from regular tourist stop-off point for those from the South. It’s also the same with the Dominican Republic: far more likely for a Northern traveler than a Southern once.

The main exception to this is Essex, where people love to fly to places like Croatia, Malta, and Mexico. Southern flyers are less likely to go and visit places like Portugal and Cuba, too. There’s certainly a bit of a hidden indicator here, and I can’t quickly put my finger on it…

What about the Midlands?

The good people of the Midlands are kind of stuck in a limbo: thrown in with the answers from both sides of the country. For those who come from places like Birmingham, for example, popular tourist stop-off points included Cuba and the Caribbean. Trips to Egypt, too, are very popular. Cyprus and Bulgaria are quite prominent from a European standpoint.

The Greek Isles are popular with people from the Midlands as well as people from cities such as Liverpool. There’s a lot of diversity out there on the topic, and a lot of interesting discoveries. From Newcastle and Sunderland preferring Majorca and Bulgaria to the Scots looking to make a run for places like the Canary Islands, Portugal and Spain, it’s interesting to see the divide in climate, culture and cost depending on what part of the nation is being looked at for a holiday.

Finnish Singing Taxi Service Makes Waves

Do you ever get into a taxi, feeling glad for the ride home, only to find out you have no money left?

Well, this can be awkward. You can either pay up the driver with a credit card in some cases, you can get money from your home or you could go to a bank machine. If none of these options are available, you can always get taken to the police station, right?

Well, thankfully, for the people of Finland, a new option exists: Sing!

With a new taxi shuttle service in Finland, you can pay off your cab ride by belting out a banger for the driver. Fortum Singalong Shuttle is a major and comical new summer service that is going to be up and running for most of the summer. it’s mostly aimed at getting people to the popular Ruisrock Festival, which is being held at present. This amazing service combines together the concept of pooling to get to the festival simply by paying for the ride with their voice.

These emission-free electric cars will be going around without causing any environmental harm. With a tablet installed into each car, you can choose the song that you wish to sing and then go for it. However, if you stop singing, then the ride will grind to a halt and you need to start singing again to keep it going!

This unique design by Fortum is supposed to help get customers more engaged with the ride and to help them see that a cleaner world is both possible and affordable. According to brand manager Jussi Malkia, this is a major step forward for transport, saying: ‘‘With Singalong Shuttle we want to show people in a joyful way how comfortable and easy it is to drive an electric car. The silent electric cars make it possible to enjoy singing without background noise and emissions’’

As one of the biggest names in the region, Fortum has quickly become a worldwide name thanks to this hilarious new trick that they have come up with. The aim is to try and get people to and from the festival without much issue. While those like myself who despise James Corden’ Carpool Karaoke might not like the reason for this existing, we can applaud the hearty message behind the campaign for sure!

Watch: Polar Bear Takes a Hotel Room for Free

There are times when we go out, and upon return, we might find a bug or other insects roaming around the floor. But this wasn’t the case Malin Stark witnessed. Malin is a nature guide in Norway. On a fine Sunday morning, Malin came back from a tour and found something unusual in her hotel room. She found a Polar bear sticking his head out of the hotel room’s window. This was very unusual.

Curious Creatures

This polar bear surprised everyone. Why would he enter a room? Maybe he was looking for food or he was just curious to find what’s inside a nature guide’s room. The curious polar bear decided to explore the hotel room and get some rest there. During the time he stayed the bear messed up the room by breaking wine bottles. The polar bear toured the room and when he decided to leave through the window he got stuck.

A Large Bear Stuck In a Tight Place

While the Polar bear enjoyed in the room he thought of going back to his own place and saw a window nearby. He saw a window and decided to get out from there. Unfortunately, he was too huge to get out of that small window.

A Slick Escape

The polar bear got stressed out. People started to gather around to help the bear come out. Even a helicopter arrived to help the poor bear. The loud noise of the helicopter further panicked the bear and he started to push himself harder, eventually squeezing himself out of the window. First, he took out his head, followed by paws and then the whole body. The bear was seen bleeding as he had gotten a small cut on his paw.

The Polar bear really did have a lot of adventure. We hope the polar bear’s paw gets recovered soon.

The Future Of Flight Experience

As one of the biggest names in aviation, Airbus is among the most popular transport groups in the European aviation circuit. Indeed, they’ve become even more popular thanks to their incredible decision to build mini-cabins for passengers who wish to get some good night’s sleep during the flight.

This was done by making some extra space in the cargo hold, using spare space in there to provide ample sleeping solutions.

So far, feedback has been more than positive, meaning that it’s likely that Airbus will continue on with the development. With double-decked bedding and seating areas, this offers a very exciting and engaging experience for anyone taking a long flight via Airbus.

Of course, without any windows, it’s not going to be suitable for those who feel claustrophobic or uncomfortable in such environments. While the aim is to try and simulate windows with high-definition screens, that’s still some way away.

This is otherwise known as Transpose and is going to help make a cost-effective way to allow passengers to rest whilst flying. The aim is to make sure that the cargo hold can be used for more than just storage, creating everything from space for sleeping to in-flight cafeteria meals and kids’ rooms.

It’s built on the classic freight train concept that often comes with all manner of café and sleeping options to be enjoyed. The aim is to help make sure that the entire cabin can be transformed in a few hours, making it easy for those wish to do something other than watch in-flight movies can do so!

For some time now, Airbus has been seen as one of the most impressive names in the aviation industry. Formed in 1967, they’ve always been about innovation. With both civil and military purposes part of the Airbus line, they’ve often found good ways to make the most of what they have got to work with.

Ever since the release of the Airbus A320, they’ve been quickly growing into a truly monumental part of the aviation experience. This is just another example of how far they have came, and how much they could still introduce to an industry that shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever.

World’s Longest Zip Line Opens in The Middle East

While the city of Dubai has been famous for its tourism, in the United Arab Emirates another city, Ras Al Khaimah, is on its way to attract millions of tourists now.

Recently they opened for business the world’s longest zip line, beating the previous record of the monster zip wire in Puerto Rico which was 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) long. This new zip wire is 2.83 kilometers (1.75 miles) long, in other words, it is 28 soccer fields long and located at the Jebel Jais Mountain. Watch the video below!

If you ever wanted to fly like a superman, you should really visit this place. You glide 1680 meters (1 mile) above sea level at a speed of 150 kph (90 mph). The ride is both short and scary.
This 2-minute ride costs $177 but it is said to be worth the money. If you are not scared of heights and have got the money, nothing can stop you.

The ride is open to all ages as long as the person weighs a minimum of forty-five kilograms (100 pounds) and a maximum of 150 kilograms (330 pounds). There are two lines, side by side, so you can ride alongside your friends or family.

The ride is in the mountainous region which gives it a natural view, as the ride was built without changing or harming the existing area. While you are at the place, you can also take the adrenaline rushing cable car ride which is almost one kilometer long.

They also plan on building an ice rink (in the desert?!), a hiking area and mountain biking routes for the tourists to enjoy. Moreover, they are also planning to make a new viewing deck which will be 1300 meters above the Jebel Jais which will showcase the mountains view.

The Emirates have set the goal of one million visitors to Ras Al Khaimah by the end of 2018. Let’s see if they will be able to reach their target or not. Stay tuned!
