6 Ordinary People Who Hit Viral Stardom In 2018

This time last year, you never heard of the eye-roll student or jumped out of a car to dance to a Drake song. However, people such as Harriet Ellis and comedian Shiggy have been part of 12 months filled with memes and viral content that has kept the public laughing all year.

Social media would have been a more somber place without them. For most of them, it was a brief moment in the spotlight, but for others, it led to a career boost. Here’s how viral fame positively affected some of the biggest stars of social media in 2018.

The Student Who Rolled Her Eyes All The Way To Stardom

Harriet Ellis reportedly had marriage proposals, was spotted by fans in supermarkets, and even had a stranger offer to send her money (which she declined) after her fifteen minutes of fame. How did it happen, she was caught on camera rolling her eyes behind ex-UKIP leader Nigel Farage during a TV political debate.

“It was something that was genuinely, truly me and there’s no better reason to go viral than by being yourself,” she told BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat. “I wasn’t being mean or doing anything embarrassing.”

Harriet noted the only real change to her life was that she got more followers on Twitter. But the 21-year-old says her days of rolling her eyes at former politicians behind their backs are behind her as she heads in a new direction with her future. “I don’t want to get involved in politics again, I want to live a quiet life. I’m going to be a teacher next year, I just want to change the world through teaching, rather than through politics.”

The Singer Whose Ye Is Different To Your Ye

Warning: This video contains strong language

It’s is nothing short of astonishing where one Instagram post can get you. For singer Osh, he somehow Instagrammed his way to a record deal with Sony Music. He posted a video of himself singing his track “My Ye Is Different“, which later went viral and was even made into a meme.

“At the time I didn’t imagine it would do what it’s done,” he told BBC Newsbeat. “But now that it has happened I’m not surprised because I realized that this song is good.”

Osh later released a full version of his track – complete with a music video – at the end of November. The singer said he wanted people to “laugh and smile” when they heard the song, but he had no intention of stopping the hard work now that he’d found fame. “If it’s meant to be then it will be but if not then not. Just keep grinding,” he said.

The Tweet That May Have Changed Your Chips

Have you tried chips from KFC recently? If you have and were satisfied with the flavor, then Charlie Burness’s tweet from 2014 might be responsible for it. KFC found Charlie’s tweet – which said its fries were so bad, the only reason people liked its food was for its chicken – and cleverly used it to promote its new chip recipe.

“Life is too short for bad food,” Charlie told BBC Newsbeat in November. “Everyone knows they’ve got a reputation for not delivering on the fries. They’re kind of soggy like they’ve been reheated as soon as you get them.”

KFC’s new chips are nowadays made from spuds with the skin left on and are chunkier. In December Charlie said she’d actually not tasted the new ones yet.

The Club Couple Who Launched A Thousand Memes

Club photographers have an eye for capturing the best (and worst) of nightlife, however, when David Wilkinson took a photo of Lucia Gorman in Milk nightclub in Edinburgh she just looked a bit, well, bored. “When I took the picture, it was just a quick snap before I left to go home,” he told BBC Newsbeat in September.

“I don’t like just taking pictures of people smiling. I like to notice the little details, so when I saw it I thought this definitely needs to go up. The day that it blew up it was my birthday, but I actually got more messages about the picture than I did about my birthday so it was quite weird.”

Lucia said she was most likely ready to go home when the photo was taken, by which point she would “nod at anything”. And Patrick, the young man in the photo, said he just regretted wearing that shirt.

The Man Who Banged His Head And Became A UK Icon

Who’d have thought you could make thousands by from getting hit by a cyclist? Well, not everyone gets hit like Ferdi Coming Fast. Ferdi went viral after he growled at a stranger who crashed into him on a pavement while he was changing a tire on a car.

He reportedly confirmed to Reece Parkinson on 1Xtra that he’d earned more than £10,000 since the clip went viral – although he’s still working as a framer. Ferdi even released a single in which he not only tackled the problem of speeding cyclists but also recommended people forget the other pressing British issue – Brexit.

The Comedian Who Danced His Way Into A Drake Video

Warning: This video contains strong language

Alright, we understand US comedian Shiggy isn’t technically an ordinary person, however, we couldn’t help but give him a shout out. Now cast your mind back to the summer of 2018 and you may recall people jumping out of their cars to dance to Drake’s “In My Feelings“.

Well, the viral sensation all started with Shiggy who posted a video of himself dancing to the Drake song and asked others to get involved. Soon, including Will Smith, took on the #InMyFeelingsChallenge and the craze went viral.

“It was honestly 100% spontaneous,” he told BBC Newsbeat at the time. “It wasn’t even meant to be this big or get to the level it’s at where everybody is doing it.”

Shiggy admitted seeing his mum do the dance he created was the highlight of the experience at the time. After the dance went viral, Shiggy eventually appeared in Drake’s official video for the song.

Watch: Cheerleader Becomes Internet Sensation

A few minutes into watching the video my jaw dropped and then a smile formed on my lips. It felt great to see such an energetic and enthusiastic cheerleader put in his best creative efforts to stand out. I was right; it isn’t the way cheerleading is done normally, the young man couldn’t resist showing off his special moves. The video footage has since gone viral; you can spend minutes scrolling through the comments which are also hilarious.

It happened in Texas, and the amazing young man is named LaDarius Marshall. He is one of the cheerleaders at the Navarro College in Texas.

His role in the cheerleading team was supposed to be merely standing and clapping his hands in rhythm. However, that apparently seemed too boring for him. LaDarius goes on to show off some moves that have caught the attention of the internet. He claps, twists his torso and neck at what can be described as unnatural angles, but he seems perfectly comfortable.

At some point, LaDarius effortlessly lifts the female cheerleader onto his shoulders performs the routine and continues his dramatic performance which is what everyone is watching.

All through the routine and his additional dramatics, LaDarius is seen smiling and making facial expressions. He is obviously far away, in an imaginary world, on a stage, in front of a huge crowd, performing while the crowd chants his name…he is a star.

Whatever his intentions were, LaDarius succeeded. The video clip has been viewed over twelve million times. It has also been featured in the local news, and on many videos streaming websites. The online traffic LaDarius has caused online has surely made many bloggers very happy today.

When asked about his spectacular performance, LaDarius states that his goal is to cheer people. He got a cheerleading scholarship to the Navarro Junior College in 2017. Obviously, the people who awarded him this scholarship will be very happy with their decision after seeing this video.

When asked how he gets inspired to perform the way he does, LaDarius mentions his sister and aunt as the people who encouraged him to be a cheerleader. He learned how to tumble from his elder sister and since then cheerleading has become his passion. LaDarius opens up about his cheerleading practice. It takes many trials to get the moves right, and it is important to be in sync with the cheerleading theme.

Cheerleading adds more excitement to during the games. The young performers come on the field to show off their tumbling skills and other stunts for a few minutes before and during the games such as basketball or football. The specially choreographed moves are made by cheerleaders who show high levels of endurance, strength, flexibility, and coordination. Asides from knowing how to dance, cheerleaders are also expected to be confident, team players with high levels of commitment, patient, and have a positive attitude at all times.

LaDarius obviously matches the description of a true cheerleader. What’s more, he also coaches little cheerleaders. LaDarius says it is one of the best opportunities he has ever had, to teach the young ones his skills and encourage them to become even better cheerleaders in future.

Police Officer’s Act of Kindness Goes Viral

An amazing act of kindness performed by a Florida police officer is going viral this week after he was filmed helping a homeless man shave his beard so he could apply for a job at McDonald’s. According to a post on the Tallahassee Police Department’s Facebook page, a witness captured the deed on camera over the weekend.

The post reads:

#MustSee #MorePureAwesomeness We thought the picture was awesome, well here’s THE VIDEO of Officer Carlson helping one of our citizens. #TPD #Tallahassee THE STORY AS TOLD BY THE CITIZEN SUBMITTING THE INFORMATION: “My daughter just sent me this picture and called to tell me the story, I had to share….she went to the gas station and saw this officer shaving a homeless man’s beard. A minute later the officer went into the store and Hannah walked in after him and saw him cleaning himself up because he was hot and sweaty. She offered to buy him a drink and got talking. Apparently the officer was at McDonald’s next door and this gentleman went in looking for a job. He was told they wouldn’t hire him unless he shaved his beard. So the officer went and got some clippers and shaved the man’s beard so he could go back and get a job! I am so proud to live in a community where our deputies and officers are such wonderful people. Good job Tallahassee Police Department!!! ❤”

Kelly Duvall sent in a picture and video to the police department after her daughter filmed an officer shave a homeless man’s beard outside a Circle K gas station on Thomasville Road, CBS affiliate WTSP reports. She explains her daughter went inside the store and encountered Officer Carlson, who was cleaning himself up.

“She offered to buy him a drink and got talking. Apparently, the officer was at McDonald’s next door and this gentleman went in looking for a job. He was told they wouldn’t hire him unless he shaved his beard. So the officer went and got some clippers and shaved the man’s beard so he could go back and get a job!”

“I am so proud to live in a community where our deputies and officers are such wonderful people. Good job Tallahassee Police Department!!!” Duvall wrote. The video now has more than 140,000 views on Facebook.

An update was also posted today on facebook from officer Carlson himself on the department’s Facebook page:

#UPDATE FROM OFFICER CARLSON!! Note: It’s his day off but he wanted to give us all this information.

Ok so everybody has been wanting an update on Phil, so here it is:
This evening I was going to dinner with the family and my kids pointed out Phil (and his friend Lonnie) sitting under the flyover on Thomasville Rd. After dinner we decided to pick up a few cheeseburgers from McDonald’s and stop by to talk with Phil. Phil was surprised and excited to see me. He pulled out the Tallahassee Democrat front page, that had me and him on it, and showed it to me.
He then told me he had talked to the manager at McDonald’s and he was set to get a job but he still needed to get his ID/SS card. I then told Phil I had good news about that and told him I had been contacted by Senator Marco Rubio’s office here in town. They stated they had also seen the story and wanted to help Phil get his ID and Social Security card.
I told Phil when I got to work on Thursday I would print out the paperwork they emailed to me and bring it by for Phil to fill out. They also said Phil could come by their office and they would help him with the process. Phil was super excited and assured me he would be ready for Thursday.
Fingers crossed and hopefully we will have another update maybe on Friday.

We are crossing our fingers hard for Phil here and hoping to see a happy ending to this already special event.

Meme Heaven: Infinity War Spins Memes Like No Other

Given the tremendous nature of Marvel: Infinity War, it’s no surprise that it has immediately become a major movie industry hit. The hype was real, and it looks like the movie appears to have lived up to expectation. It has also, though, met another expectation: the expectation of the meme brigade of social media and the wider internet.

This movie has obviously produced a huge amount of positive goodwill in recent weeks. It has also set a whole new standard of comical memes. It’s built around the ‘I don’t feel so good….’ moment from Spider-Man, right before he essentially turns into nothingness. As they start to turn into dust, everyone had their own reaction; though the words that Spider-Man spoke to Stark soon became quite a major meme.

Some of the most memes that we’ve seen of this genre so far include:

Uncle Ben, Reprised.

In a fun swap from the scene in A:IW, people have taken the classic Toby Maguire Spider-Man movies and used the scene when Uncle Ben gets shot. They’ve got Ben fading away ala the Infinity War style, before they simply banish entirely. It’s a comical take on one of the most meaningful moments in Marvel history.

Doctor Who?

Another comical take was that of David Tennant’ Doctor Who vanishing, complete with the famous caption and a face of terror to boot. It’s a comical take on the famous “I don’t want to go….” scene from Doctor Who, just before he regenerates. It’s a fantastic snap for this particular meme to make sure that it works both in context and in terms of the comedic value produced by its usage.

Scooby, Scooby Do.

This nice take on Shaggy vanishing was another wonderful take on this unique new meme. It’s a great choice for the meme, not least because it perfectly fits in with the scene from the movie itself.

While the meme culture has its pros and cons, more cons than pros in my opinion, to things like comedic culture, some of these memes spawned by Infinity War have been pretty damn funny. There’s lots of good examples of these memes, from the Bill Gates one below to the three listed above. Take a look around on social media yourself; you should find ample examples of people having a wonderful time at the expense of this comical meme!

Watch: Container Ship Battles Storm

Any environment of a huge amount of water is generally unknown and hostile territory for most humans and they can be really scary sometimes. We are programmed to fear the unknown and other environmental elements. It makes perfect sense in terms of survival.

Despite all of our knowledge, progress and modern technology, oceans continue to be the mysterious and enigmatic traps with some very real dangers hidden in their bellies. And when we talk about the amount of water and scary we mean ocean storms! Something that will always remain scary no matter how much technology will develop or how big ships will be built.

This video is so amazing you will probably think is a scene from a movie! But, actually is not! While crossing the Atlantic on the container ship Oleander, the crew manages to film a spectacular storm off Bermuda. We told you that it looks like a scene from a movie!

Waves come in all shapes and sizes—from small ones calmly lapping on the shore to large rogue waves out at sea. Storms interact with the ocean on the surface, from hurricanes to tsunamis. These waves are really big and scary!

The ocean is a central image. It is the symbolism of a great journey. Being out there in the ocean, God’s creation, it’s like a gift He has given us to enjoy and sometimes to provoke the fear inside of us!
