Contemporary art is, we can say, art, that was created during our lives. Meaning that it evolves, based on how people blend with it, there are many types, styles, and forms of art today, but does all have a meaning?
“Modern” or “Contemporary” are only a synonyms for art. Sadly, in the world of art, these two forms describe two completely different moments of creations, and two separate concepts of art, bigger the difference, bigger the confusion. To fully understand the concept of Contemporary Art we should understand the difference of these two. The notion of Modern Art is usually related with arts emerged in between of 1860’s and 1970’s. During this period the art made successful experimentation and placed it past traditions aside. This new form of art and its freedom influenced by the inner views and expressions are making a great deal where the great changes and motives of Modern Art are questioned.
With all the diversity and its challenging nature, the art today includes various combinations of materials, styles, and meanings that are opposing the essence of simple definition. Artist today are constantly exploring ideas of new forms of art, aiming to understand the art of their time. The “missing content” is usually important, and its variations off different views that actually help in developing different styles. This deviation of the dominant, previous definition only improves the ideas of Modern Art.
Since it developed in the time of re-evaluations, experimentations, and with many questions, Contemporary Art sometimes misses the concept of shared idea, and the way of expressing. After this experiment, everything is so called art, according to all of this, followed by the upcoming trends, always questioning and expanding the idea of what else can be pronounced to art, to begin with. Contents of these works, are often not related to active social issues and are usually aiming to re-define the common values.
So, what now..? Obviously, there is a feel like something crucial and dominant that defines it is missing, and the approach that these vary valuables have towards art is never-ending, so how should we separate the concept of Contemporary art and Modern Art? Modern Art refers to the past, and with these references, it attempts to understand current time, present. Contemporary art, is also aiming for that, but the present is “shape-shifting” itself, and it is hard to know, so the question like “What is Art?” is often repeated, and it is no wonder.
